PACT: A Collaborative Team Model for Treating High Conflict Families in Family Court

JUVENILE AND FAMILY COURT JOURNAL, Issue 2 2009
    Joe H. Brown
ABSTRACT This article describes a court-community model program for high conflict divorced families that is designed to reduce the level of inter-parental conflict including: a) child exposure to inter-parental conflict; and b) the frequency of re-litigation over residential arrangements and parenting plans. The six-session (16-hour) program combines conflict resolution and group/community support. The program provides a "Personal Support Team" and "Personal Plan of Action" to help each parent control emotions and maintain agreement. The results of research conducted to explore the effect of the program on level of triangulation and inter-parental conflict, as well as the frequency of re-litigation over parenting plans, residential arrangements, and parenting time are reported. On Acting Against One's Best Judgement: A Social Constructionist Interpretation for the Akrasia Problem

JOURNAL FOR THE THEORY OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR, Issue 2 2008
    DIEGO ROMAIOLI
Abstract Akrasia is a philosophical concept meaning the possibility to perform actions against one's best judgement. This contribution aims to clarify this phenomenon in terms of a social construction, stating it as a narrative configuration generated by an observer. The latter finds himself engaged in justifying a "problematic" line of action with regard to specific cultural beliefs referring to the self, the others and the behaviour. This paper intends to make explicit the assumptions underlying the traditional definitions of akrasia when, paradoxically, an agent performs an action not in accordance with his/her best judgement. In the transition from modern to post-modern psychology, we here propose an interpretation of the phenomenon in psychological terms, envisaging akrasia as a narrative form functional to the identity processes and to the social dynamics of the structures of contemporary societies. Implications in the psychological practice will be taken into account. [source]

From Agrarian Reform to Ethnodevelopment in the Highlands of Ecuador

JOURNAL OF AGRARIAN CHANGE, Issue 4 2008
    VÍCTOR BRETÓN SOLO DE ZALDÍVAR
Through an examination of interventions in the agrarian structures and rural society of the Ecuadorian Andes over the past 40 years, this article explores the gradual imposition of a particular line of action that separates rural development from the unresolved question of the concentration of land ownership and wealth among the very few. This imposition has been the consequence, it is argued, of the new development paradigms implemented in Andean peasant communities since the end of land reform in the 1970s. The new paradigms emphasize identity and organizational aspects of indigenous populations at the expense of anything connected with the class-based campesinista agenda, which was still operational in the indigenous movement in the early 1990s. The essay concludes with some thoughts on the remarkable parallels between the 1990s neoliberal and counter-reformist models of action, and the pre-reformist indigenist policies of the period that ended in the 1960s. Calculation of sliding power loss in spur gear contacts

    LUBRICATION SCIENCE, Issue 1 2002
    Arto Lehtovaara
Abstract An engineering-level calculation model for sliding power loss in spur gear contacts is presented. Teeth contact through the line of action is modelled as a constantly changing roller contact whose radius, speed, and load can be calculated from the gear geometry under the given operating conditions. The gear mesh cycle is approximated by a large number of elastohydrodynamic contacts. A constant film thickness and a Hertzian pressure distribution are assumed in each contact. The model includes non-Newtonian lubricant behaviour together with temperature and mixed lubrication effects in contact. The numerical solver is reasonably fast in evaluating effectively the sliding power loss dependence on the essential gear and lubricant parameters. The features and behaviour trends of the calculated sliding power losses have a close similarity with published results obtained from measurements and experiment-based power loss models with mineral oil. The limiting shear stress of the lubricant is observed to have an essential role in the power loss behaviour especially at high loads. [source]

Statistics-driven Development of OBD Systems: An Overview

QUALITY AND RELIABILITY ENGINEERING INTERNATIONAL, Issue 6 2006
    Stefano Barone
Abstract Automotive on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems are designed to keep critical components under control during vehicle functioning, and to alert the driver in case of severe malfunctions. OBD systems aimed at reducing polluting emissions are mandatory on new motor vehicles. Some research projects conducted in cooperation between universities and the automotive industry have been quite successful in terms of knowledge advancement and industrial gain. An updated overview of the adopted methodologies and results obtained are given in this article. Such results can be valuable for both theorists and practitioners, since they witness the use of statistics as a powerful catalyst of technical progress, and give a possible line of action for further application in several scientific fields.
