The use of 0.03% H2O2 as a chemical oxidant provides reliable results from transition times, but peak potentials are dramatically affected by the presence of this reagent. The study suggests that chemical-oxidation SCP can be a technique complementary to other stripping modalities in the study of inert and macromolecular labile metal complexes. [source] Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidation of Phenyl-Substituted Alkenes using Molecular Oxygen as the Sole OxidantADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 14-15 2009Aline Abstract The palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of styrene and 2-vinylnaphthalene in dimethylacetamide/water or dimethylformamide/water solutions under mild conditions has been developed, in which palladium(II) chloride is used in the absence of co-catalysts or special stabilizing ligands as the sole and recyclable catalyst. The corresponding methyl ketones have been obtained in good to excellent yields with low catalyst loadings (0.2,5,mol%) and high turnover numbers (up to ca. 1000 to palladium). This simple and efficient catalytic method represents an ecologically benign and economically attractive synthetic pathway to industrially important compounds used in the manufacture of various polymers and drugs. [source] Highly Efficient Halogenation of Organic Compounds with Halides Catalyzed by Cerium(III) Chloride Heptahydrate Using Hydrogen Peroxide as the Terminal Oxidant in WaterADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 11-12 2009Habib Firouzabadi Abstract In this article a new environmentally friendly catalytic method is described for the efficient monoiodination and bromination of arenes and also iodoetherification and iodolactonization of olefins using hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant. The method is based on using sodium iodide or sodium bromide, hydrogen peroxide (35%) and cerium(III) chloride as an effective catalyst in water at room temperature or under reflux conditions. By this protocol, iodination of anilines proceeded with high regioselectivity at the para position with the formation of small amounts of the ortho isomers. However, bromination of anilines proceeded with absolute regioselectivity to give the para isomers as the sole products in high yields. Iodinations and brominations of m -xylene, toluene, chloro- and bromobenzenes were proceeded with excellent regioselectivity to produce the para isomers as the sole products. Benzene was also halogenated by this catalytic system to give the monohalogenated benzene in good yields. Iodoetherification and iodolactonization of olefins also proceeded easily in high yields at room temperature. However, the bromination of olefins by this protocol failed and the starting materials were detected intact. [source] Iminium Salt-Catalysed Asymmetric Epoxidation using Hydrogen Peroxide as Stoichiometric OxidantADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 11-12 2008Philip C. Bulman Page Abstract Iminium salt organocatalysts can provide high selectivity and high efficiency in catalytic asymmetric epoxidation. They are normally used in conjunction with Oxone as the stoichiometric oxidant. Oxone, however, has limited stability and is insoluble in most organic solvents; we report here for the first time the development of a reaction system driven by hydrogen peroxide as the stoichiometric oxidant, involving an unusual double catalytic cycle. [source] Selective Light Supported Oxidation of Hexoses Using Air as Oxidant , Synthesis of TetrahydroxyazepanesADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 1 2008Abdoulaye Gassama Abstract Unprotected alkyl glycosides have been oxidized using air as oxidant and copper(I) chloride/TEMPO as the catalytic system. The primary hydroxy group in the 6 position is selectively transformed into an aldehyde equivalent. The process was optimized by irradiation with visible light. Without further purification and with high yields, the resulting lactols have been transformed into tetrahydroxyazepane. [source] A High-Yield, Liquid-Phase Approach for the Partial Oxidation of Methane to Methanol using SO3 as the OxidantADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 9 2005Sudip Mukhopadhyay Abstract A direct approach for producing methanol from methane in a three-step, liquid phase process is reported. In the first step, methane is reacted with SO3 to form methanesulfonic acid (MSA) at 75,°C using a free-radical initiator and MSA as the solvent. Urea-H2O2 in combination with RhCl3 is found to be the most effective initiator (57% conversion of SO3; 7.2% conversion of CH4). MSA is then oxidized by SO3 at 160,°C in a second step to produce a mixture containing methyl bisulfate and some methyl methanesulfonate (87% conversion of MSA). In the third step, the mixture of methyl bisulfate and methyl methanesulfonate is hydrolyzed in the presence of an organic solvent, to produce an organic phase containing methanol and an aqueous phase containing sulfuric acid and some MSA (63% conversion of methyl bisulfate; 72% conversion of methyl methanesulfonate). Overall, 58% of the MSA (of which 23% is derived from methane) is converted to methanol. [source] Oxidative status in iron-deficiency anemiaJOURNAL OF CLINICAL LABORATORY ANALYSIS, Issue 5 2009Jong-Ha Yoo Abstract Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidant molecules that can play an important role in the pathogenesis of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). The aim of this study was to investigate oxidative status in patients with IDA and alteration of oxidative status after iron treatment. Thirty-three female patients with IDA and 25 healthy controls were included in this study. Oxidant and total antioxidant capacity were determined using free oxygen radicals test and free oxygen radicals defence (Form CR 3000, Callegari, Parma, Italy). Catalase activity was measured by spectrophotometer using a commercially available kit (Bioxytech Catalase-520, OxisResearch, Portland, OR). Oxidant activity in patients with IDA was significantly higher than controls (P<0.05), while total antioxidant and catalase activity were significantly lower (P<0.05). After treatment, oxidant, antioxidant, and catalase activity reached the levels of the control group, and no significant differences were observed among groups (P>0.05). In conclusion, our data indicate that blood reactive oxygen species was lower and total antioxidant and catalase activity were higher after rather than before treatment in patients with IDA. The results of our study support the higher oxidative stress hypothesis in IDA; however, due to the limited number of cases included, more studies may be required to confirm the results. J. Clin. [source] Nanoscaled Polyaniline Fibers Prepared by Ferric Chloride as an OxidantMACROMOLECULAR RAPID COMMUNICATIONS, Issue 5 2006Lijuan Zhang Abstract Summary: Nanoscaled polyaniline (PANI) fibers with 17,30 nm in diameter were successfully prepared by oxidation polymerization using ferric hydrochloride (FeCl3,·,6H2O) as an oxidant in the presence of p -toluenesulfonic acid (p -TSA), , -naphthalenesulfonic acid (, -NSA), and camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) as the dopants. The resulting nanofibers show smaller diameter, higher crystallinity and conductivity (10,1 S,·,cm,1) compared with the nanofibers oxidized by ammonium persulfate (APS), which may be due to the lower oxidation/reduction potential of FeCl3. SEM images of the PANI nanofibers prepared by oxidation polymerization using ferric hydrochloride as an oxidant.
