Sequential Double Olefination of 2-(Arylmethylidene)-2-phosphonoacetonitrile with Dimsyl Lithium and Aldehydes: A Domino Route to Densely Substituted 1,3-Butadienes

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 22 2008
    Raghunath Chowdhury
Abstract An efficient and highly stereoselective synthesis of densely substituted 1,3-dienes has been achieved which entails a sequential double olefination of 2-(arylmethylidene)-2-phosphonoacetonitriles by a one-pot domino process involving Michael addition of dimsyllithium to 2-(arylmethylidene)-2-phosphonoacetonitrile, Horner,Wadsworth,Emmons reaction of the resulting phosphonate ylide with the added aldehyde followed by base induced methylsulfenoxy elimination. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl Sulfones in the Julia,Kocienski Olefination , Application to the Synthesis of Tri- and Tetrasubstituted Olefins

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 20 2006
    Diego A. Alonso
Abstract 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (BTFP) sulfones 8a,d are successfully employed in the modified Julia olefination reaction with carbonyl compounds employing phosphazene base P4- tBu at room temp. in THF, affording tri- and tetrasubstituted olefins in good yields. The Julia,Kocienski olefination between primary alkyl BTFP sulfones 8a,b and aromatic and aliphatic ketones affords the corresponding trisubstituted alkenes in good yields and low stereoselectivities. On the other hand, higher yields and stereoselectivities are obtained in the synthesis of trisubstituted olefins through the other approach, the coupling of secondary alkyl BTFP sulfones 8c,d with aliphatic, aromatic and ,,,-unsaturated aldehydes. For the first time, tetrasubstituted olefins are synthesized by means of the Julia,Kocienski protocol when the isopropyl BTFP sulfone 8c reacts with aliphatic and aromatic ketones, employing P4- tBu as base at THF reflux. Borrowing Hydrogen: Indirect "Wittig" Olefination for the Formation of C,C Bonds from Alcohols

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 19 2006
    Phillip J. Black
Abstract The successful development of an indirect three-step domino sequence for the formation of C,C bonds from alcohol substrates is described. An iridium-catalysed dehydrogenation of alcohol 1 affords the intermediate aldehyde 2. The desired C,C bond can then be formed by a facile Wittig olefination, yielding the intermediate alkene 3. In the final step the alkene is hydrogenated to afford the indirect Wittig product, the alkane 4. The key to this process is the concept of borrowing hydrogen; hydrogen removed in the initial dehydrogenation step is simply borrowed by the iridium catalyst. Functioning as a hydrogen reservoir, the catalyst facilitates C,C bond formation before subsequently returning the borrowed hydrogen in the final step. Herein we present full details of our examination into both the substrate and reaction scope and the limitations of the catalytic cycle. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Reaction of diethyl thiocyanatomethylphosphonate with aldehydes as a route to diethyl Z -1-alkenylphosphonates

    HETEROATOM CHEMISTRY, Issue 7 2007
    Roman B, aszczyk
Diastereoselective synthesis of diethyl Z-1-alkenylphosphonates from easily available diethyl thiocyanatomethylphosphonate and aromatic aldehydes has been developed. Olefination of the aldehydes occurs under mild conditions and affords the title compounds with moderate yields. A plausible mechanism of the above-mentioned reaction is also discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stereoselective Synthesis of ,-Proline Derivatives from Allylamines via Domino Hydroformylation/Wittig Olefination and Aza-Michael Addition

ADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 6 2010
    Andreas Farwick
Abstract Under appropriate reaction conditions, a domino hydroformylation/Wittig olefination can be accomplished with derivatives of allylamines and stabilized Wittig ylides. A further highly diastereoselective aza-Michael reaction yields ,-proline derivatives. These are, for example, useful as building blocks for alkaloid syntheses. [source]

An Efficient Synthesis of Poly(ethylene glycol)-Supported Iron(II) Porphyrin using a Click Reaction and its Application for the Catalytic Olefination of Aldehydes

ADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 1-2 2009
    Suman
Abstract The first successful synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) immobilized iron(II) porphyrin using a copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne [3+2],cycloaddition is reported. In contrast to the existing methods for the synthesis of PEG-immobilized metalloporphyrins, the click method offers better catalyst loading under comparatively mild reaction conditions. The prepared complex 5 (PEG-C51H39FeN7O) was found to be an efficient catalyst for the selective olefination of aldehydes with ethyl diazoacetate in the presence of triphenylphosphine and afforded excellent olefin yields with high (E) selectivities. The PEG-supported catalyst 5 was readily recovered by precipitation and filtration and was recycled for up to ten runs without significant loss of activity. [source]
