Selected AbstractsLanguages for constrained binary segmentation based on maximum a posteriori probability labeling,INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF IMAGING SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 2 2009Abstract We use a MRF with asymmetric pairwise compatibility constraints between direct pixel neighbors to solve a constrained binary image segmentation task. The model is constraining shape and alignment of individual contiguous binary segments by introducing auxiliary labels and their pairwise interactions. Such representation is not necessarily unique. We study several ad-hoc labeling models for binary images consisting of nonoverlapping rectangular contiguous regions. Nesting and equivalence of these models are studied. We observed a noticeable increase in performance even in cases when the differences between the models were seemingly insignificant. We use the proposed models for segmentation of windowpanes and windows in orthographically rectified façade images. Segmented window patches are always axis-parallel nonoverlapping rectangles which must also be aligned in our strongest model. We show experimentally that even very weak data model in the MAP formulation of the optimal segmentation problem gives very good segmentation results. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aly Abstract This paper presents the analysis, modeling, and measurements of a novel configuration of spiral inductors and transformers to enhance the figure of merits. The present configuration utilizes a Z -shaped multilayer metalization to increase the Q of the monolithic inductors, and increase K without sacrificing the Q of the monolithic transformers. A simple two-port lumped-circuit model derived from inductor S -parameters is used to illustrate the potential of the new design. Several on-chip transformers have been fabricated using the Motorola 0.18-micron copper process. The experimental data shows good agreement with predicted data obtained using the HFSS software simulator. A noticeable increase of mutual coupling and Q is achieved. Background., Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in empirical literature surrounding the benefits of exercise for breast cancer patients. Methods., A systematic search strategy was used to identify relevant literature. Twenty-nine articles were retained for critical review, appraised for quality and synthesized. Results., Many early studies had limited internal and external validity. Recent studies were considerably more rigorous and robust. Consistent support for all types of aerobic exercise was most evident in studies of patients during adjuvant cancer treatments (chemotherapy and radiotherapy), compared with post-treatment studies. The evidence which suggested that aerobic exercise limits cancer-related fatigue was particularly strong. For other patient concerns, the empirical support was less robust, however, the potential for beneficial and measurable patient outcomes was indicated for cardiopulmonary function, overall quality of life, global health, strength, sleep, self-esteem and reduced weight gain, depression, anxiety and tiredness. Conclusions., Additional studies with higher methodological quality are required in this clinically relevant area to substantiate current indications particularly for patient subgroups (e.g. older people, those with advanced cancer and the disadvantaged). Relevance to clinical practice., It is important for all healthcare professionals involved in the care of individuals affected by breast cancer to be aware of the evidence surrounding the benefits of exercise and to encourage patients to increase physical activity and improve their overall health and well-being. [source] Skull anatomy of the miniaturized gecko Sphaerodactylus roosevelti (Squamata: Gekkota)JOURNAL OF MORPHOLOGY, Issue 11 2008Juan D. Daza Abstract A detailed description of the skull and jaw of the gecko Sphaerodactylus roosevelti is presented. The bones are described articulated and isolated with special consideration given to the type of suture among joining elements. S. roosevelti was compared with 109 gekkotan species to evaluate the osteological variation and to find characters for cladistic analysis. Changes in the skull associated with the miniaturization process are discussed within the sphaerodactylid geckos. A noticeable increase of overlapping sutures was observed in the snout of the smallest sphaerodactylids compared to other gekkotans. This pattern is convergent with that in miniaturized pygopodids and may be attributed to adaptations for decreasing mechanical resistance of the cranium during feeding or burrowing. New cranial characters support Sphaerodactylinae as a monophyletic group and should be useful for resolving questions such as their relationship with other gekkotans. J. [source] Have Individual Stocks Become More Volatile?THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE, Issue 1 2001An Empirical Exploration of Idiosyncratic Risk This paper uses a disaggregated approach to study the volatility of common stocks at the market, industry, and firm levels. Over the period from 1962 to 1997 there has been a noticeable increase in firm-level volatility relative to market volatility. Accordingly, correlations among individual stocks and the explanatory power of the market model for a typical stock have declined, whereas the number of stocks needed to achieve a given level of diversification has increased. All the volatility measures move together countercyclically and help to predict GDP growth. Market volatility tends to lead the other volatility series. Factors that may be responsible for these findings are suggested. Purpose:,To evaluate various strategies designed to improve the specificity of the interpretation of results obtained with the frequency doubling technology perimeter (FDT) used in the full-threshold mode. Methods:,Three different strategies were compared using data from 452 glaucoma patients and 237 healthy subjects: combining several FDT parameters from a single test, combining the FDT test with a GDx test, and confirming an abnormal FDT test result with a repeat test. Results:,Confirming an abnormal FDT test result with a repeat test yielded a specificity increase of 0.10, from 0.80 to 0.90, at the expense of some loss of sensitivity for early but not for moderate or severe glaucoma. Combining several FDT parameters from a single test and combining FDT with GDx did not yield any noticeable increase in diagnostic performance. Conclusions:,A modest increase in FDT diagnostic performance can be obtained by the confirmation of an abnormal test result with a repeat test. [source] Car,Parrinello Molecular Dynamics Study of the Blue-Shifted F3CH,,,FCD3 System in Liquid N2CHEMPHYSCHEM, Issue 6 2006Pawel Rodziewicz Dr. Abstract Fluoroform, as confirmed by both experimental and theoretical studies, can participate in improper H-bond formation, which is characterized by a noticeable increase in the fundamental stretching frequency ,(CH) (so-called blue frequency shift), an irregular change of its integral intensity, and a CH bond contraction. A Car,Parrinello molecular dynamics simulation was performed for a complex formed by fluoroform (F3CH) and deuterated methyl fluoride (FCD3) in liquid nitrogen. Vibrational analysis based on the Fourier transform of the dipole moment autocorrelation function reproduces the blue shift of the fundamental stretching frequency ,(CH) and the decrease in the integral intensity. The dynamic contraction of the CH bond is also predicted. The stoichiometry of the solvated, blue-shifted complexes and their residence times are examined. [source] Nitroxide spin probe study of probe size, hydrogen bonding and polymer matrix rigidity effects on poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylene oxide) complexesMAGNETIC RESONANCE IN CHEMISTRY, Issue 7 2003Li Tan Abstract An electron spin resonance (ESR) spin probe study was performed on 1 : 1 by weight poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) complex over the 100,450 K temperature range with a series of tetramethylpiperidyloxy-based spin probes. Measurements of the parameters T5mT, Ta and Td demonstrated the effects of probe size and the strength of hydrogen bonding. The probes in the series Tempone, Tempo, Tempol and Tamine (respectively 4-oxo-, unsubstituted, 4-hydroxy- and 4-amino-2,2,6,6,-tetramethylpiperidine -1-oxyl) displayed noticeable increases in the hydrogen-bonding effect, as indicated by Ta and Td. These increases correlated with increasing hydrogen bond acceptor strength. On the other hand, as the probe size became larger, T5mT gradually increased due to the free volume decrease. These effects were analyzed using the established theoretical relationship of T5mT to probe volume expressed by f. Meanwhile, in order to investigate the effect of polymer matrix rigidity, a similar study was performed with a nitroxide spin probe, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine-1-oxyl (Tempo), on PAA/PEO complexes of different weight compositions. The quantitative fast motion fraction in the composite ESR spectrum was calculated. The influence of changes in the composition of PAA on the molecular mobility was characterized by changes of the spectral parameters and ,c. The molecular mobility was shown to diminish with increasing content of PAA in PAA/PEO blends duo to the restriction of the polymer matrix rigidity increase. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
