Impact of a rock avalanche on a moraine-dammed proglacial lake: Laguna Safuna Alta, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Abstract Moraines that dam proglacial lakes pose an increasing hazard to communities in the Andes and other mountain ranges. The moraines are prone to failure through collapse, overtopping by lake waters or the effect of displacement waves resulting from ice and rock avalanches. Resulting floods have led to the loss of thousands of lives in the Cordillera Blanca mountains of Peru alone in the last 100 years. On 22 April 2002 a rock avalanche occurred immediately to the south-west of Laguna Safuna Alta, in the Cordillera Blanca. The geomorphic evidence for the nature, magnitude and consequences of this event was investigated in August 2002. Field mapping indicated that the avalanche deposited 8,20 × 106 m3 of rock into the lake and onto the surface of the frontal region of Glaciar Pucajirca, which flows into the lake. Repeated bathymetric surveying indicated that ,5 × 106 m3 of this material was deposited directly into the lake. The immediate effect of this event was to create a displacement wave that gained in height as it travelled along the lake basin, overtopping the impounding moraine at the lake's northern end. To achieve overtopping, the maximum wave height must have been greater than 100 m. This, and subsequent seiche waves, caused extensive erosion of both the proximal and distal faces of the impounding terminal moraine. Further deep gullying of the distal face of this moraine resulted from the supply of pressurized water to the face via a relief overflow tunnel constructed in 1978. Two-dimensional, steady-state analysis of the stability of the post-avalanche moraine rampart indicates that its proximal face remains susceptible to major large-scale rotational failure. Factors influencing the spatial distribution of zooplankton and fish in Loch Ness, UK

Summary 1The vertical and horizontal distribution of phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish in Loch Ness, Scotland, were monitored during one day-time and one night-time survey in July 1992. The vertical samples were collected at a site located at the northern end of the loch and the horizontal samples along a longitudinal transect. 2The vertical distribution surveys demonstrated that the phytoplankton, the zooplankton and the fish were concentrated in the top 30 m of water above the seasonal thermocline. Within this layer, Cyclops stayed much closer to the surface than Eudiaptomus but both species moved towards the surface at night. 3The most important factor influencing the horizontal distribution of the phytoplankton was the north- south gradient in productivity. The sub-catchments surrounding the north basin contain a greater proportion of arable land than those to the south and the concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen and phytoplankton chlorophyll increased systematically from south to north. 4Zooplankton distribution patterns were influenced by wind-induced water movements and the dispersion of allochthonous material from the main inflows. The highest concentrations of Cyclops were recorded in the north, where there was more phytoplankton, and the highest concentrations of Eudiaptomus in the south, where there were higher concentrations of non-algal particulates. 5There was no spatial correlation between total zooplankton and total fish abundance but the highest concentrations of small (1,5 cm) fish were recorded in the south where there was a large patch of Eudiaptomus. The number of Eudiaptomus at specific locations within this patch were, however, negatively correlated with the numbers of small fish. These results suggest that the fish were actively foraging within the patch and were depleting their zooplankton prey in the areas where they were most abundant. [source]


Seismic evidence for a mantle plume oceanwards of the Kamchatka,Aleutian trench junction

Summary A non-linear iterative P- wave traveltime tomography has revealed a mantle plume originating at a depth of nearly 1000 km, rising across the 600 km discontinuity, and deflecting subhorizontally in the uppermost mantle presumably by shear flow due to the overlying moving plate. Data from the Geophysical Survey of Russia (1955,1997) were inverted jointly with the catalogues of International Seismological Centre and USGS National Earthquake Information Centre (1964, 1998). The result shows a 300,500 km-wide cylindrical low-velocity anomaly (, , 2 per cent) that extends from a depth of greater than 900 km to shallower than 200 km. The anomaly is almost vertical at depths up to ,400 km and rises obliquely to the north up to ,200 km under the ocean floor near the northern end of Emperor seamounts. Above ,300 km depth a subsidiary anomaly extends subhorizontally to the NW in fair agreement with the direction of movement of the Pacific Plate. The overlying seafloor is characterized by anomalously high heat flow, which may be attributed to the thermal effect of the mantle plume. [source]


Cytomorphological alterations of the thymus, spleen, head-kidney, and liver in cardinal fish (Apogonidae, Teleostei) as bioindicators of stress

Abstract Morphological and cytological alterations at the light microscope (LM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) levels were observed in the thymus, spleen, head-kidney, and liver of cardinal fishes (Apogonidae, Teleostei) from the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, sampled from a strongly polluted site at the northern end of the gulf, and compared to similar samples from a clean, reference site. At the polluted site, the most prominent change was the formation of numerous deposits of cells rich in phagosomes with lipofucin, melanin granules, and phagocytosed debris, including a high increase in number and dimensions of Hassall's corpuscles and melano-macrophage centers. The number of Hassall's corpuscles was 20 (±8.0)/mm2 and of melano-macrophage centers 18 (±4.0)/mm2 at the polluted site, and 7.0 (±4.0)/m2 vs. 5.0 (±2.0)/mm2 respectively at the reference site. In numerous instances the head kidney's melano-macrophage centers in fishes from the polluted site were encapsulated by reticulocytes, a phenomenon recognized as a marker of neoplasmosis and possible malignancy. In the spleens of fishes from the polluted site, numerous deposits of cell debris, peroxisomes, and enlarged lysosomes were also observed. The livers (hepatopancreas) of fishes from polluted waters demonstrated very strong hyperlipogeny. Many of their hepatocytes were laden with lipid vesicles, fragmented endoplasmic reticulula, and aberrant mitochondria. Although the observed alterations in the glands and liver do not indicate any immediate threat to the life of the fish, they can become crucial with respect to energy turnover and fecundity trajectories.
