Diadegma mollipla parasitizing Plutella xylostella: host instar preference and suitability

Abstract Oviposition decisions (i.e., host selection and sex allocation) of female parasitoids are expected to correspond with host quality, as their offspring fitness is dependent on the amount and quality of resources provided by a single host. The host size model assumes that host quality is a linear function of host size, with larger hosts believed to contain a greater quantity of resources, and thus be more profitable than smaller hosts. We tested this assertion in the laboratory on a solitary larval,pupal parasitoid Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) developing on three instars (second,fourth) of one of its hosts, the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). In a no-choice test, parasitism levels and sex ratio (i.e., proportion of female progeny) were significantly high in hosts attacked in the second instar followed by third then fourth instars. However, the few parasitoids that completed a generation from the fourth instars did so significantly faster than conspecifics that started development in the other two instars. In direct observations, however, the parasitoids (i) randomly attacked the various host instars, (ii) spent a similar period examining the various host instars with their ovipositors, (iii) subdued all three host instars with about the same effort, and (iv) no statistical differences were observed in the attack rates on the three host instars. In a choice test, the females parasitized significantly more third instars followed by second then fourth instars. However, total parasitism in this experiment was 43% lower compared to parasitism of only second instars in the no-choice test. No significant differences were detected in progeny sex ratios. In both choice and no-choice tests, significantly more fourth instars died during the course of the experiments than second instars, while third instars were intermediate. The higher parasitism of third than second instars in the choice test indicates that the females perceived larger hosts as higher quality than smaller hosts, despite their lower suitability for larval development. Adult large pine weevils Hylobius abietis feed on silver birch Betula pendula even in the presence of conifer seedlings

Abstract 1,The feeding preference of the adult pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for Betula pendula Roth was studied in no-choice and paired-choice feeding experiments. 2,In the first no-choice test, large quantities of silver birch bark in Petri dishes were consumed; on average, the daily consumption of each weevil was 67 mm2. 3,In the second no-choice test, the weevils were offered 1-year-old silver birch seedlings for 6 days. Initially, the weevils fed mostly on the stem bases; later, they moved upward to feed on other parts of the stems. In addition to the main shoots, scars caused by gnawing were also found on leaf bases, blades, veins and petioles. Feeding resulted in the death of the main stems in 15% of the seedlings. 4,In the paired-choice tests, the conifers were preferred to silver birch, even though a large amount of silver birch was also consumed in the presence of conifers. 5,In the paired-choice tests, equal amounts of Scots pine and Norway spruce were always consumed. When hybrid aspen was offered, only small amounts were gnawed. [source]


Host age and fitness-related traits in a koinobiont aphid parasitoid

Abstract., 1.,Trade-offs play a key role in species evolution and should be found in host,parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between host age categories. 2.,The braconid wasp, Aphidius ervi, is a solitary endoparasitoid that allows its aphid hosts to continue to feed and grow after parasitisation. The hypotheses that host age influences their quality and that female parasitoids exploit their hosts based on that quality were tested under laboratory conditions using no-choice tests. 3.,Aphidius ervi females accepted the aphid Myzus persicae for oviposition and their progeny developed successfully in all host ages. The fitness-related traits of parasitoids did not increase linearly with the host age in which they developed. Host quality was found to be optimal at intermediate host ages and the females preferred to parasitise these hosts. The shortest progeny development time and a more female-biased sex ratio were observed in hosts of intermediate age. 4.,This study suggests the existence of multiple interactive trade-offs occurring during host,parasitoid interactions according to host age related quality. Behavioural observations of Pieris brassicae larvae indicate multiple mechanisms of action of analogous drimane antifeedants

Abstract We tested 11 analogous synthetic drimane antifeedant compounds for their feeding inhibiting effects on larvae of the large white butterfly Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) in no-choice tests on the host plant Brassica oleracea L. Furthermore, we observed larval feeding behaviour in no-choice tests to analyze temporal effects of five drimanes. The results show that the five analogous antifeedants differentially influence feeding behaviour and locomotion activity. Warburganal and polygodial are most likely sensory mediated antifeedants. Habituation to these compounds occurs soon after the onset of the tests (i.e., within 0.5,1.5 h). Compound 5 and confertifolin are probably not direct, sensory mediated antifeedants. After 0.5,1.5 h of exposure, these compounds inhibit not only feeding, but also locomotion behaviour, indicating postingestive, toxic effects. Isodrimenin inhibits feeding from the onset of the test and is probably a sensory mediated antifeedant. No habituation occurs to this compound, indicating that isodrimenin is either a very strong antifeedant or that it additionally has postingestive, toxic effects. Topical application of the drimanes on the larval cuticle revealed feeding inhibiting effects, but these could not be related to the occurrence of postingestive feeding inhibiting effects, indicating that this method is inappropriate to show possible postingestive effects of drimanes in P. brassicae. In conclusion, the behavioural observations performed in this research indicate that analogous drimanes inhibit feeding by P. brassicae larvae through multiple mechanisms of action. The results show that, when developing a structure activity relationship (SAR) for a series of antifeedants, it is important to distinguish the mode of action which underlies inhibition of feeding. Forty-nine new host plant species for Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

Abstract The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), is a worldwide pest of numerous agricultural and ornamental crops. In addition to directly feeding on plants, it also acts as a vector of plant viruses of cultivated and uncultivated host plant species. Moreover, host plants can affect the population dynamics of whiteflies. An open-choice screening experiment was conducted with B-biotype B. tabaci on a diverse collection of crops, weeds, and other indigenous plant species. Five of the plant species were further evaluated in choice or no-choice tests in the laboratory. The results reveal 49 new reproductive host plant species for B. tabaci. This includes 11 new genera of host plants (Arenaria, Avena, Carduus, Dichondra, Glechoma, Gnaphalium, Molugo, Panicum, Parthenocissus, Trianthema, and Triticum) for this whitefly. All species that served as hosts were acceptable for feeding, oviposition, and development to the adult stage by B. tabaci. The new hosts include three cultivated crops [oats (Avena sativa L.), proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)], weeds and other wild species, including 32 Ipomoea species, which are relatives of sweetpotato [I. batatas (L.) Lam.)]. Yellow nutsedge, Cyperus esculentus L., did not serve as a host for B. tabaci in either open-choice or no-choice tests. The results presented herein have implications for whitefly ecology and the numerous viruses that B. tabaci spreads to and among cultivated plants. [source]


Leaf volatiles as attractants for neonate Helicoverpa armigera Hbn. (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae

The 1st instar Helicoverpa armigera larvae were bioassayed in the laboratory to study their orientational responses towards leaf volatiles of four leguminous crops: chickpea, Cicer arietinum L.; pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan Millsp.; blackgram, Vigna mungo L.; and cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.). The gram podborer larvae showed positive orientational responses towards leaves of all four test plants. Whole leaves of chickpea, pigeonpea and blackgram were more attractive for gram podborer larvae than cowpea whole leaves. Larval attraction for crushed (damaged) leaves of chickpea, blackgram and cowpea was significantly higher than the attraction for pigeonpea crushed leaves. The orientational responses of gram podborer larvae for crushed leaves of cowpea were significantly higher compared to whole leaves. However, the whole pigeonpea leaves elicited higher orientational responses than the crushed leaves. Maceration was not observed to affect the attractancy of chickpea and blackgram leaves. Further, the leaves were extracted in n-hexane and methanol. It was observed that the crude extracts of all the test leaves elicited positive orientational responses of larvae. In no-choice tests, the orientational preference of the larvae for the hexane extracts of all the test leaves was statistically equal. Similarly, the methanol extracts of leaves of all the test plants also attracted a greater percentage of larvae in no-choice tests. However, under two-choice bioassays, hexane foliage extract of all the test plants elicited higher orientational responses of larvae compared to the methanolic extracts of same leaves. The results of these bioassays clearly indicate that all the test leaves emit kairomones for gram podborer larvae. Moreover, kairomonal components of these leaves are, at least in part, extractable in hexane and methanol, which are higher in hexane than methanol. [source]


Feeding responses of carabid beetles to dimethoate-contaminated prey

Abstract 1,The feeding responses of Pterostichus madidus Fab., P. melanarius Illiger and Nebria brevicollis Fab. (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to dimethoate-contaminated prey were investigated in ,no-choice' and ,choice' feeding tests. 2,In the no-choice tests, starved beetles were presented with aphid prey treated with four concentrations of dimethoate. In the choice tests, treated and untreated prey were presented together and the feeding preferences of the starved beetles observed. 3,No avoidance or rejection behaviour was seen in any of the carabids in either of the tests, i.e. no discrimination of the treated and untreated prey was observed. 4,Sufficient dimethoate was consumed with the aphid prey to cause significant mortality levels in the carabids. 5,The concentrations of dimethoate used in these experiments are comparable to field exposure, so carabids feeding in treated fields and field margins could potentially suffer lethal effects via the indirect exposure route of consuming contaminated prey. Biology and host specificity of the chromolaena stem gall fly, Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Abstract The stem-galling tephritid fly Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) was investigated as a potential biocontrol agent against the weed Chromolaena odorata (L) King & Robinson in Indonesia. Adults were tested in choice and no-choice tests, on 55 non-target plant species in 17 families. No oviposition was recorded on 53 of the species, while oviposition but no larval development was recorded on two. Field releases commenced in 1995 and establishment was immediate. The gall fly is now widely established in most Indonesian provinces, where gall parasitism and predation is generally low. [source]
