Selected AbstractsTHE DOUBLE ROLE OF SKILLED LABOR, NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND WAGE INEQUALITYMETROECONOMICA, Issue 1 2005Hartmut Egger ABSTRACT We examine the relationship between the supply of skilled labor, technological change and relative wages. In accounting for the role of skilled labor in both production activities and productivity- enhancing ,support' activities we derive the following results. First, an increase in the supply of skilled labor raises the employment share of non-production labor within firms, without lowering relative wages. Second, new technologies raise wage inequality only in so far as they give incentives to firms to reallocate skilled labor towards non-production activities. In contrast, skill-biased technological change of the sort usually considered in the literature does not affect wage inequality. [source] Anthropology and the New Technologies of CommunicationCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 3 2006Brian Keith Axel This article is a set of reflections on how a modern linguistic ideology of communication produces a fundamental misrecognition of the formation of the modern liberal subject as a naturally communicating subject. I explore the complex features of this misrecognition as a legacy of Cold War procedures of knowledge production about communication and technology to suggest that ethnographies of new technologies of communication unwittingly proliferate presumptions about the ontological integrity of the human prior to communication and prior to the advent of technologies of communication. This dilemma offers an alternative point of departure for the study of new technologies of communication in pursuit of a renewed, critical investigation into the circulation of modern cultural forms of intelligibility. Larson Nations around the world are undergoing rapid changes that are altering the nature of adolescence in their societies. This introduction reviews methods used by futurists and how these methods are applicable to adolescence, and provides an overview of some of the macrochanges that are shaping the societies in which adolescents of the future will live. F. da Silva Jr. The papers in this special issue of physica status solidi (c) are selected manuscripts including diverse research lines presently in development in the ambit of the NanoSemiMat network in Brazil. The 3rd Workshop on Semiconductor Nanodevices and Nanostructured Materials (NanoSemiMat-3) took place in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, at the Catussaba Resort Hotel, during the period of 24,27 March 2004. The NanoSemiMat network is part of the Brazilian Initiative on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N), with strategic cooperative research support in this area. The initiative started in 2001, through the formation of four research networks nationwide in different scientific fields associated to NanoScience and Nanotechnology (N&N). The 3rd Workshop on Nanodevices and Nanostructured Materials (NanoSemiMat-3) is an evolution of the two previous meetings which were held in Recife, PE, Brazil and Natal, RN, Brazil in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The meeting comprised 16 invited plenary talks, each 30 minutes long, given by eminent researchers from Brazil, Canada, France, Germany and the United States of America. These invited talks extend through different topics of N&N associated to Nanodevices and Nanostructured Materials: Photodetectors, Lasers and LEDs, Porous Materials, New Materials, and New Technologies, among others. There were short talks presented by representatives of the other N&N networks in Brazil dealing with Molecular Technology and Interfaces, Nanostructured Materials and Nanobiotechnology. Also a poster session, with about 60 presentations, highlighted the main research activities presently being developed by the network members at the different sites which constitute the NanoSemiMat network. The presentations reflected theoretical and experimental research lines which lead to the development of basic and applied research in nanostructured semiconductor materials such as III,V and II,VI, Si and SiC based nanodevices, wide gap materials, ceramics, polymers, porous materials, optical and transport properties of low dimensional structures, magnetic nanostructures and structures under the influence of high fields, spintronics and sensor applications. The participants of the workshop came from 20 research institutions within Brazil and from 7 research laboratories and universities in Europe and North America. In total about 120 researchers, members of the network, invited researchers, representatives of supporting and funding agencies in Brazil, undergraduate and graduate students, technical staff and supporting personal as well as researchers from complementary fields were present. The realization of the NanoSemiMat-3 was possible due to the financial support of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) and the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) and the logistic support of Federal University of Bahia. All activities during the NanoSemiMat-3 were open to the general public with interest in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this third workshop of the series, we highlight the expansion of its format, with plenary and invited talks, poster sessions, as well as the presence of seven invited speakers from abroad. We expect that the continuation of the NanoSemiMat series will be a forum for discussions of state-of-the-art research developed in Brazil on N&N and the multidisciplinary field of semiconductor nanodevices and nanostructured materials as well as its superposition to other branches of science. Elrick Proteomic analyses have recently been conducted on tissues, biofluids, subcellular components and enzymatic pathways as well as various disease and toxicological states, in both animal models and man. In addition, several recent studies have attempted to integrate proteomics data with genomics and/or metabonomics data in a systems biology approach. The translation of proteomic technology and bioinformatics tools to clinical samples, such as in the areas of disease and toxicity biomarkers, represents one of the major opportunities and challenges facing this field. An ongoing challenge in proteomics continues to be the analysis of the serum proteome due to the vast number and complexity of proteins estimated to be present in this biofluid. Aside from the removal of the most abundant proteins, a number of interesting approaches have recently been suggested that may help reduce the overall complexity of serum analysis. In keeping with the increasing interest in applications of proteomics, the tools available for proteomic analyses continue to improve and expand. For example, enhanced tools (such as software and labeling procedures) continue to be developed for the analysis of 2D gels and protein quantification. In addition, activity-based probes are now being used to tag, enrich and isolate distinct sets of proteins based on enzymatic activity. One of the most active areas of development involves microarrays. Antibody-based microarrays have recently been released as commercial products while numerous additional capture agents (e.g. aptamers) and many additional types of microarrays are being explored. The methods reviewed include miniaturized probes and new ways of using them perioperatively for cardiac imaging from transesophageal, substernal, and intracardiac imaging locations. The smaller and more versatile the probes, the better adapted they will be in providing methods to improve the outcomes in babies born with serious forms of congenital heart disease. It was led by artist Laurie Long with teachers and pupils from Pooles Park primary school in Islington, an inner city borough in North London. Based on the production of a postcard featuring an image of personal significance, the children were involved in exploring and constructing their own and others' identities whilst developing their technology skills in creative ways. The project raises interesting questions about the applicability of contemporary art practices to the primary classroom. The research is based on participant observation and includes the voices of the artist and teachers involved. [source] Applicant and Recruiter Reactions to New Technology in Selection: A Critical Review and Agenda for Future ResearchINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SELECTION AND ASSESSMENT, Issue 2-3 2003Neil AndersonArticle first published online: 30 JUL 200 This paper presents a narrative review of recent research into applicant and recruiter reactions to new technology in employee selection. Different aspects of the use of new technology are noted including computer-based testing, Internet-based recruitment and candidate assessment, telephone-based and video-based interviews, video-based situational judgment tests, and virtual reality scenarios. It is argued that an appropriate way to conceptualize these advances is as ,technical innovations' as defined in the creativity and innovation research in Industrial, Work, and Organizational (IWO) psychology. Applicant reactions research is reviewed thematically, and studies into three main themes are discussed: Applicant preferences and reactions, equivalence, and adverse impact. Following Bartram (2001), an amphibian-monarchistic analogy is employed at several stages in the review. Four major criticisms of the extant applicant reactions research base are noted: its atheoretical orientation, a short-termist concentration upon reactions level outcomes, an over-reliance on students as surrogates, and a patchiness of coverage of crucial research questions. The second part of this paper explores neglected issues of recruiter adoption of new technology for employee selection. Again drawing from advances in the innovation and creativity literatures, this section explores likely antecedent factors at the individual and organizational levels of analysis. A general model of recruiter adoption of new technology is posited as a framework for future research in this area. For both applicant and recruiter reactions further research is called for and implications for practice are noted throughout. Fukuda Abstract Aims:, To evaluate an improved bioluminescent enzyme immunoassay (BEIA) using biotinylated firefly luciferase for the rapid detection of Salmonella in naturally contaminated chicken meat samples. Methods and Results:, Capture agents and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extraction reagents for Salmonella were investigated to improve the sensitivity of the BEIA. Also, the use of Oxoid SPRINT (Simple Pre-enrichment and Rapid Isolation New Technology) as a pre-enrichment and selective medium for 26-h BEIA detection of Salmonella in chicken meat samples was examined. The use of polymyxin B as a capture agent on solid support and 3-[(3-Cholamidopropyl) dimethylammonio] propanesulfonic acid (CHAPS) for extraction of the LPS facilitated sensitive detection of Salmonella. Of 120 chicken meat samples, 25 samples were positive using the improved BEIA with the SPRINT and 25 samples were positive using the SPRINT followed by the standard isolation methods. Conclusions:, The improved BEIA, in which polymxin B was used as a capture agent and CHAPS was used for extraction of the antigen, had a sensitivity of 96·0% and a specificity of 98·9% for the detection of Salmonella in chicken meat. Significance and Impact of the Study:, The improved BEIA combined with the SPRINT medium for the detection of Salmonella in chicken meat samples produced comparable results to the culture methods in 26 h. Some of the main issues addressed in this paper relate to the organization of a cytology laboratory: internal and external quality control, adequate staffing levels and staff education, cytopathology reporting format and contents, confidentiality issues, relationship with the clinicians and involvement of cytopathologists in clinical management teams. Quality control has to be provided within cytology departments but external quality assurance is also essential, with national monitoring. Lightman Abstract Neuroendocrine systems play a key role not only in the maintenance of whole-body homeostasis but also as the link between behavioural, endocrine and autonomic responses to environmental stimuli. It is becoming increasingly clear that neuroendocrine regulatory mechanisms are under the control of a combination of factors including genetic background, environment and early-life programming. Patterns of gene expression are increasingly being used to provide information on the genotypes associated with particular behaviours, and modulation of specific parts of the genome allow investigation of the contribution of particular genes. The sequencing of the genome provides a unique opportunity to elucidate the genetic contribution to neuroendocrine and behavioural processes, and to investigate the interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Although drugs can be used to activate or inhibit neurotransmitters and receptors, they lack specificity. New technologies now permit the activation or inactivation of both neurotransmitters and receptors in specific areas of the brain for defined periods, including crucially important developmental windows when activation appears to have long-term consequences. The future challenges are to define the critical mechanisms through which the genetic constitution of an individual human or experimental animal interacts with environmental cues to result in altered physiological or even pathological behaviour and endocrine function. Clothier Summary Soil is the first filter of the world's water; its buffering and filtering determine the quality and quantity of our reserves of subterranean and surface water. Preferential flow can either enhance, or curtail, the capacity of the soil to buffer and filter, and it can compromise, or boost, other ecosystem services. We ask ,when do preferential flow and transport matter?' We identify 12 of 17 ecosystem services that benefit from preferential flow and three that are affected detrimentally. We estimate by simple arithmetic the value of preferential flow to ecosystem services to be globally some US$304 billion (109) per year. We review the 1989 Monte Veritą meeting on preferential flow processes and summarize the 2006 presentations, some of which are published in this issue of the Journal. New technologies and innovative experiments have increased our understanding of the conditions that initiate and sustain preferential flows. We identify contemporary exigencies, and suggest avenues for their resolution. We are progressing through observation-led discovery. Our prognosis is that new data will enable us to develop better models, and more aptly to parameterize existing models, and thereby predict the impact, benefits and detriments of preferential flow in soil. [source] The New Economy and the Work,Life Balance: Conceptual Explorations and a Case Study of New MediaGENDER, WORK & ORGANISATION, Issue 1 2003Diane Perrons Given the varied claims made about the new economy and its implications for the organization of work and life, this article critically evaluates some conceptualizations of the new economy and then explores how the new media sector has materialized and been experienced by people working in Brighton and Hove, a new media hub. New technologies and patterns of working allow the temporal and spatial boundaries of paid work to be extended, potentially allowing more people, especially those with caring responsibilities, to become involved, possibly leading to a reduction in gender inequality. This article, based on 55 in-depth interviews with new media owners, managers and some employees in small and micro enterprises, evaluates this claim. Reference is made to the gender-differentiated patterns of ownership and earnings; flexible working patterns, long hours and homeworking and considers whether these working patterns are compatible with a work,life balance. The results indicate that while new media creates new opportunities for people to combine interesting paid work with caring responsibilities, a marked gender imbalance remains. Accordingly, a proactive and holistic approach can facilitate efficient research, design, testing, evaluation, and fielding for novel and off-the-shelf products, thereby assisting developers, end users, and other diverse stakeholders in better understanding tradeoffs in the defense industry and beyond. By prioritizing mechanisms such as strategic life-cycle environmental assessments (LCEA); programmatic environment, safety, and occupational health evaluations (PESHE); health hazard assessments (HHA); and other innovative platforms and studies early within systems engineering, various nonlethal military technologies have been successfully developed and deployed. Walling Abstract Chemical genetics, in which small molecules are used in lieu of mutations to study biological processes, requires large and diverse chemical libraries to specifically perturb different biological pathways. Here we describe a suite of technologies that enable chemical libraries prepared by split-pool solid phase synthesis to be screened in a diverse range of chemical genetic assays. Compounds are synthesized on 500 micron high-capacity polystyrene beads, and arrayed into individual wells of 384-well plates using a hand-held bead arrayer. Compounds are cleaved from synthesis beads using a chemically-resistant ceramic dispensing system, producing individual stock solutions of single compounds. Nanoliter volumes of these solutions are then transferred into assay plates using an array of stainless steel pins mounted on a robotic arm. We have designed reusable 1536- and 6144-well assay plates made of silicone rubber that can be cast in the laboratory and filled by hand. This integrated technology platform enables hundreds of biological assays to be performed from the product of a single synthesis bead, enabling the results of different chemical genetic experiments to be directly compared. [source] Use and Standardisation of Mauritian Creole in Electronically Mediated Communication1JOURNAL OF COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION, Issue 3 2009Aaliya Rajah-Carrim New technologies have affected language use and attitudes in many communities. Kreol, a French-lexified Creole and the nonstandardised first language of the majority of Mauritians, is now gaining ground as a written language in the specific context of electronic-mediated communication. This has led to the emergence of writing norms among users of the language. These norms are founded on etymological phonemic and mixed conventions. This study based on data gathered through questionnaires analyses the attitudes of 66 young Mauritians towards the three orthographies used in electronically mediated communication and the standardisation of the language in new technologies. It also briefly discusses some of the spelling conventions used in Internet postings. I show that the etymological system is perceived as most readable, learnable and closest to French. Users believe that Kreol can act as a unifying factor among different ethnolinguistic groups in Mauritius. Responses also highlight the potential of users and electronic-mediated communication in bringing about the standardisation of Kreol. [source] Consumer Awareness and Willingness to Pay for High-Pressure Processing of Ready-to-Eat FoodJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE EDUCATION, Issue 2 2009Doris T. Hicks ABSTRACT:, Commercial, nonthermal processing of food, such as high hydrostatic-pressure processing (HPP), has increased. The safety and quality of foods produced by HPP has not been well communicated to the public. An online, nationwide consumer survey was implemented to assess awareness of alternative food processing technologies, consumer food safety attitudes and knowledge, and willingness to pay (WTP) for HPP products. The consumer survey was administered by ZoomerangŌ, an online survey clearinghouse. The survey was completed by 1204 adults. Frequencies and crosstabs were calculated on Zoomerang and SPSS used for one-way ANOVA and chi-square analyses. The survey assessed knowledge of HPP, attitudes about new food processing techniques, WTP for HPP foods and demographics. Overall, many demographic characteristics reflected U.S. census population. While traditional methods, that is, canning, freezing, and microwaving were all well recognized by over 80% of respondents, only 8% recognized HPP. Trends indicated an increase in age, education, and income reflected greater food safety knowledge. Regardless of demographics, no survey respondent exhibited knowledge mastery (80%). Given an explanation of HPP and its benefits, 39% of respondents indicated they would be WTP an additional cost, with higher income and education having the most impact. Majority of respondents indicated a WTP of $0.25 to $0.50 regardless of the value of the food product. More respondents were WTP slightly more for a more expensive product. New technologies often encounter a stumbling block in consumer acceptance and processing costs. A consumer's WTP, once they were informed, could encourage industry to look favorably on this technology. Several candidate genes for schizophrenia may also be associated with bipolar disorder: G72, DISC1, NRG1, RGS4, NCAM1, DAO, GRM3, GRM4, GRIN2B, MLC1, SYNGR1, and SLC12A6. Of these, association with G72 may be most robust. However, G72 haplotypes and polymorphisms associated with bipolar disorder are not consistent with each other. The positional candidate approach showed an association between bipolar disorder and TRPM2 (21q22.3), GPR50 (Xq28), Citron (12q24), CHMP1.5 (18p11.2), GCHI (14q22-24), MLC1 (22q13), GABRA5 (15q11-q13), BCR (22q11), CUX2, FLJ32356 (12q23-q24), and NAPG (18p11). Studies that focused on mood disorder comorbid with somatic symptoms, suggested roles for the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 3644 mutation and the POLG mutation. From gene expression analysis, PDLIM5, somatostatin, and the mtDNA 3243 mutation were found to be related to bipolar disorder. Whereas most previous positive findings were not supported by subsequent studies, DRD1 and IMPA2 have been implicated in follow-up studies. Several candidate genes in the circadian rhythm pathway, BmaL1, TIMELESS, and PERIOD3, are reported to be associated with bipolar disorder. Linkage studies show many new linkage loci. In depression, the previously reported positive finding of a gene,environmental interaction between HTTLPR (insertion/deletion polymorphism in the promoter of a serotonin transporter) and stress was not replicated. Although the role of the TPH2 mutation in depression had drawn attention previously, this has not been replicated either. Pharmacogenetic studies show a relationship between antidepressant response and HTR2A or FKBP5. New technologies for comprehensive genomic analysis have already been applied. HTTLPR and BDNF promoter polymorphisms are now found to be more complex than previously thought, and previous papers on these polymorphisms should be treated with caution. These present problems for local officials: implementing technologies will be expensive, and no technologies exist that can be used to gauge demand. We apply contingent valuation methodologies to determine support for additional taxes to pay for new terrorism-related technologies and services. We present findings from a national survey about people's attitudes toward terrorism prevention and response. We find that respondents generally support new services and technologies and local tax increases to pay for them. We also find that respondents are willing to pay more if programs have everyday uses that would enhance public safety, but are less supportive as inconveniences increase. We find evidence that the wage-bill share of older workers is lower in innovative firms and that the opposite holds for younger workers. This age bias affects both men and women. It is also evidenced within occupational groups. More detailed analysis of employment inflows and outflows shows that new technologies essentially affect older workers through reduced hiring opportunities. In contrast, organisational innovations mainly affect their probability of exit, which decreases much less than for younger workers following reorganisation. The main progress occurred following the introduction of cone-beam technology in computed tomography in the 1990s. The number of manufacturers and devices using this technology for the maxillofacial region is growing rapidly and they are now becoming readily available. Materials This article focuses on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) devices applied to the maxillofacial region. CBCT serves as a bridge from two dimensions (2D) to three dimensions (3D), with lower irradiation than conventional CT. Different manufacturers and models are now available to satisfy the different needs of clinicians. Results A recent review of the manufacturers found 23 CBCT devices on the market. The specifications, applications and other issues of currently available CBCT devices are presented and discussed. Conclusions 3D imaging is developing at a very fast pace. New technologies and machines are emerging and CBCT is becoming readily available. Due to the growing demand for the technology based on the needs of clinicians, there is now a wide and growing selection of devices on the market. [source] Marking high-technology market evolution through the foci of market stories: the case of local area networksTHE JOURNAL OF PRODUCT INNOVATION MANAGEMENT, Issue 6 2002Vasilis Theoharakis Previous research suggests that changing consumer and producer knowledge structures play a role in market evolution and that the sociocognitive processes of product markets are revealed in the sensemaking stories of market actors that are rebroadcasted in commercial publications. In this article, the authors lend further support to the story-based nature of market sensemaking and the use of the sociocognitive approach in explaining the evolution of high-technology markets. They examine the content (i.e., subject matter or topic) and volume (i.e., the number) of market stories and the extent to which content and volume of market stories evolve as a technology emerges. Data were obtained from a content analysis of 10,412 article abstracts, published in key trade journals, pertaining to Local Area Network (LAN) technologies and spanning the period 1981 to 2000. Hypotheses concerning the evolving nature (content and volume) of market stories in technology evolution are tested. The analysis identified four categories of market stories,technical, product availability, product adoption, and product discontinuation. The findings show that the emerging technology passes initially through a ,technical-intensive' phase whereby technology related stories dominate, through a ,supply-push' phase, in which stories presenting products embracing the technology tend to exceed technical stories while there is a rise in the number of product adoption reference stories, to a ,product-focus' phase, with stories predominantly focusing on product availability. Overall story volume declines when a technology matures as the need for sensemaking reduces. When stories about product discontinuation surface, these signal the decline of current technology. New technologies that fail to maintain the ,product-focus' stage also reflect limited market acceptance.
