[source] A New Synthesis of Push-Pull Pyrroles, Their Oxidation to Stable 3H -Pyrroles and an Unexpected Anellation ReactionEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 20 2009Gunther Buehrdel Abstract A new synthesis of push-pull pyrroles of type 5 was developed starting from bis(imidoyl chlorides) 1 and various iminodiacetic acid derivatives 3. The use of appropriate N -trifluoroacetyl residues as protecting/activating group proved to be the method of choice for the straightforward preparation of the 3,4-diarylamino-1H -pyrroles 5. When benzothiazole substructures are present in 2,5-position of heterocycles 5, a two-electron oxidation leads to 3H -pyrroles of type 6 in excellent yields. However, in the case of cyano or ester groups, a further oxidative process immediately led to the new 3H -pyrrolo[3,4- b]quinoxalines 7 via intramolecular ring anellation. Brito Abstract Diels,Alder reactions of the 2,-hydroxychalcones 1a,e with ortho -benzoquinodimethane (3) yielded the 3-aryl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-naphthyl 2-hydroxyphenyl ketones 4a,e in good yields. The dehydrogenation of the cycloadducts 4a,e to 3-aryl-2-naphthyl 2-hydroxyphenyl ketones 5a,e was studied. Good results were obtained when DDQ was used as oxidant and microwave irradiation as energy source. Several benzoxanthone derivatives were also obtained as minor products. CHEVEDDEN Conventional wisdom maintains that the Islamic world and western Christendom held two very different views of the crusades. The image of warfare between Islam and Christendom has promoted the idea that the combative instincts aroused by this conflict somehow produced discordant views of the crusades. Yet the direct evidence from Islamic and Christian sources indicates otherwise. The self-view of the crusades presented by contemporary Muslim authors and the self-view of the crusades presented by crusading popes are not in opposition to each other but are in agreement with each other. Both interpretations place the onset of the crusades ahead of their accepted historical debut in 1095. Both interpretations point to the Norman conquest of Islamic Sicily (1060,91) as the start of the crusades. And both interpretations contend that by the end of the eleventh century the crusading enterprise was Mediterranean-wide in its scope. The Islamic view of the crusades is in fact the enantiomorph (mirror-image) of the Christian view of the crusades. This article makes a radical departure from contemporary scholarship on the early crusading enterprise because it is based on the direct evidence from Islamic and Christian sources. The direct evidence offers a way out of the impasse into which crusade history has fallen, and any attempt at determining the origin and nature of crusading without the support of the direct evidence is doomed to failure. [source] New Synthesis of Aryl and Heteroaryl N- Acylureas via Microwave-Assisted Palladium-Catalysed CarbonylationADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 13 2010David Liptrot Abstract A new, practical synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl N- acylureas has been developed via palladium-catalysed carbonylation of aryl or heteroaryl halides in the presence of urea nucleophiles. A range of reactions illustrating the wide scope of this reaction was carried out under microwave irradiation, using either carbon monoxide gas in a vessel equipped with a gas inlet adapter, or molybdenum hexacarbonyl as the carbon monoxide source in standard microwave vials. The reactions proceeded in good to excellent yields. To illustrate the usefulness of this method a one-step synthesis of the important insecticide diflubenzuron is reported. The transformation was improved thanks to the screening of the reaction conditions and consequent improvements were obtained from the use of dicarbonylrhodium iodide [Rh(CO)2I]2 as catalyst precursor. The generalisation of the reaction was then further investigated by employing variously substituted arylboronic acids and propargylic alcohols.
