Selected AbstractsEvaluating the Introduction of a National Minimum Wage: Evidence from a New Survey of Firms in IrelandLABOUR, Issue 1 2006Donal O'Neill We use data from a specifically designed survey of firms to estimate the employment effects of this change. Employment growth among firms with low-wage workers prior to the legislation was no different from that of firms not affected by the legislation. A more refined measure of the minimum wage, however, suggests that the legislation may have had a negative effect on employment for the small number of firms most severely affected by the legislation. However, the size of these effects is relatively modest. In this article, we analyze results from a new survey of Mexican-heritage households to draw some inferences about tenure choice within that group. Some measures of attachment to the United States,residency status and the amount of money sent to relatives and friends in Mexico,suggest that, among Mexican immigrants, permanence is a key determinant of homeownership in the United States. More specifically, being a citizen increased the probability of ownership, whereas being undocumented reduces the probability. Surprisingly, after controlling for residency status, length of tenure in the United States does not predict tenure status, except that those who refused to report length of tenure were more likely to have higher tenure status. Those who sent remittances home to Mexico were less likely to become homeowners. [source] A Nationwide Assessment of the Biodiversity Value of Uganda's Important Bird Areas NetworkCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2006HERBERT TUSHABE AIAs; complementariedad; congruencia trans-taxón; selección de sitios de conservación Abstract:,BirdLife International's Important Bird Areas (IBA) program is the most developed global system for identifying sites of conservation priority. There have been few assessments, however, of the conservation value of IBAs for nonavian taxa. We combined past data with extensive new survey results for Uganda's IBAs in the most comprehensive assessment to date of the wider biodiversity value of a tropical country's IBA network. The combined data set included more than 35,000 site × species records for birds, butterflies, and woody plants at 86 Ugandan sites (23,400 km2), including 29 of the country's 30 IBAs, with data on additional taxa for many sites. Uganda's IBAs contained at least 70% of the country's butterfly and woody plant species, 86% of its dragonflies and 97% of its birds. They also included 21 of Uganda's 22 major vegetation types. For butterflies, dragonflies, and some families of plants assessed, species of high conservation concern were well represented (less so for the latter). The IBAs successfully represented wider biodiversity largely because many have distinctive avifaunas and, as shown by high cross-taxon congruence in complementarity, such sites tended to be distinctive for other groups too. Cross-taxon congruence in overall species richness was weaker and mainly associated with differences in site size. When compared with alternative sets of sites selected using complementarity-based, area-based, or random site-selection algorithms, the IBA network was efficient in terms of the number of sites required to represent species but inefficient in terms of total area. This was mainly because IBA selection considers factors other than area, however, which probably improves both the cost-effectiveness of the network and the persistence of represented species. En la evaluación más integral, hasta la fecha, del valor de la biodiversidad en general de la red de AIAs de un país tropical, combinamos datos antiguos con los resultados de muestreos extensivos recientes de las AIAs de Uganda. [source] A systematic study of low-mass X-ray binaries in the M31 globular cluster systemMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 4 2010Mark B. Peacock ABSTRACT We investigate low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the M31 globular cluster (GC) system using data from the 2XMMi catalogue. These X-ray data are based on all publicly available XMM,Newton observations of the galaxy. This new survey provides the most complete and homogeneous X-ray survey of M31's GCs to date, covering >80 per cent of the confirmed old clusters in the galaxy. We associate 41 X-ray sources with confirmed old clusters in the recent M31 cluster catalogue of Peacock et al. Comparing these data with previous surveys of M31, it is found that three of these clusters are newly identified, including a bright transient source in the cluster B128. Four additional clusters, that are not detected in these 2XMMi data, have previously been associated with X-ray sources from Chandra or ROSAT observations. Including these clusters, we identify 45 clusters in M31 which are associated with X-ray emission. By considering the latest optical GC catalogues, we identify that three of the previously proposed X-ray clusters are likely to be background galaxies and two have stellar profiles. We consider the properties of LMXB hosting clusters and confirm significant trends between the presence of an LMXB and the metallicity, luminosity and stellar collision rate of a cluster. We consider the relationship between the luminosity and stellar collision rate of a cluster and note that LMXB hosting clusters have higher than average stellar collision rates for their mass. Our findings strongly suggest that the stellar collision rate is the dominant parameter related to the presence of LMXBs. This is consistent with the formation of LMXBs in GCs through dynamical interactions. [source] The radio source counts at 15 GHz and their implications for cm-wave CMB imagingMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 1 2001Angela C. Taylor We use the preliminary results of a new survey of radio sources made using the Ryle Telescope at 15.2 GHz, to estimate the impact of foreground sources on cm-wave cosmic microwave background (CMB) images. This is the highest frequency survey that is relevant to the issue of radio source contamination in CMB experiments. The differential source count of the 66 sources found in 63 deg2 is , from ,20 to ,500 mJy. Extrapolating this to 34 GHz (where many cm-wave CMB experiments operate) gives an estimated temperature contribution of sources in a CMB image, with a beam corresponding to multipole . A means of source subtraction is evidently necessary, otherwise the signal-to-noise ratio in CMB images will be limited to 4 or 5, becoming worse at higher resolution. We compare the population of sources observed in this new survey to that predicted by extrapolation from lower frequency surveys, finding that source flux densities, and indeed the existence of many sources, cannot be determined by extrapolation. [source] Presence of Rhodopsin and Porphyropsin in the Eyes of 164 Fishes, Representing Marine, Diadromous, Coastal and Freshwater Species,A Qualitative and Comparative Study,PHOTOCHEMISTRY & PHOTOBIOLOGY, Issue 4 2008Mina Toyama There are two types of visual pigments in fish eyes; most marine fishes have rhodopsin, while most freshwater fishes have porphyropsin. The biochemical basis for this dichotomy is the nature of the chromophores, retinal (A1) and 3-dehydroretinal (A2), each of which is bound by an opsin. In order to study the regional distribution of these visual pigments, we performed a new survey of the visual pigment chromophores in the eyes of many species of fish. Fish eyes from 164 species were used to examine their chromophores by high-performance liquid chromatography,44 species of freshwater fish, 20 of peripheral freshwater fish (coastal species), 10 of diadromous fish and 90 of seawater fish (marine species) were studied. The eyes of freshwater fish, limb freshwater fish and diadromous fish had both A1 and A2 chromophores, whereas those of marine fish possessed only A1 chromophores. Our results are similar to those of previous studies; however, we made a new finding that fish which live in freshwater possessed A1 if living near the sea and A2 if living far from the sea if they possessed only one type of chromophore. [source] Neighbourhood and Family Effects in Educational ProgressTHE AUSTRALIAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, Issue 1 2000Ben Jensen Increasing inequality in Australian cities has created the need for a deeper understanding of the interaction between spatial segmentation and economic outcomes. This paper offers a preliminary economic analysis of Australian neighbourhood externalities in the context of increasing segmentation. Theoretically, neighbourhoods can affect youths' economic out-comes through their effects on school quality, information flows, job networks, and demonstration effects. We utilise a new survey of 171 year 12 students in ten Melbourne high schools to examine the impact of individual, family, and neighbourhood characteristics on the decision to attend post-secondary education. It is shown that there exist neighbourhood externalities that affect human capital investment decisions. Finally, we offer some tentative implications for public policy. [source] |
