Design, Synthesis, and Pharmacological Investigation of Iodined Salicylimines, New Prototypes of Antimicrobial Drug Candidates

Abstract A series of 3,5-diiodo-salicylalidene Schiff bases (compounds 1,35) has been synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activity. The compounds were assayed for antibacterial activities by the MTT method. Some of the compounds inhibit the growth of a broad range of bacteria including the species of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Enterobacter cloacae. Among them, compounds 2-[(4-chloro-phenylimino)methyl]-4,6-diiodo-phenol 11 and 2,4-diiodo-6-[(2-morpholin-4-yl-ethylimino)methyl]phenol 19 showed the most potent antibacterial activity with MIC of 3.1, 12.9, 3.3, 6.5, 12.9, 3.3 and 3.2, 12.8, 3.2, 12.8, 12.8, 3.2 ,M against B. subtilis, S. aureus, S. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, E. Coli, and E. cloacae, respectively. [source]


Respect in close relationships: Prototype definition, self-report assessment, and initial correlates

Researchers who study romantic relationships have mentioned respect as a factor contributing to relationship success, but little effort has been made to define respect, measure it, or discover how it relates to other relationship constructs. In Study 1 a prototype methodology was used to identify consensual features of respect. Participants in Study 2 rated the centrality of the features of respect and completed a new prototype-based respect-for-partner scale that was highly reliable and correlated in predictable ways with avoidant attachment and evaluative aspects of partner descriptions. In Study 3, the new respect scale predicted relationship satisfaction better than scales measuring liking, loving, attachment-related anxiety and avoidance, and positive and negative partner qualities. Suggestions are offered for future research on respect. [source]


Design of a Small Centrifugal Blood Pump With Magnetic Bearings

Abstract Design of a blood pump with a magnetically levitated rotor requires rigorous evaluation of the magnetic bearing and motor requirements and analysis of rotor dynamics and hydraulic performance with attention to hemolysis and thrombosis potential. Given the desired geometric dimensions, the required operating speed, flow in both the main and wash flow regions, and magnetic bearing performance, one of several design approaches was selected for a new prototype. Based on the estimated operating speed and clearance between the rotor and stator, the motor characteristics and dimensions were estimated. The motor stiffness values were calculated and used along with the hydraulic loading due to the fluid motion to determine the best design for the axial and radial magnetic bearings. Radial and axial stability of the left ventricular assist device prototype was verified using finite element rotor dynamic analysis. The analysis indicated that the rotor could be completely levitated and spun to the desired operating speed with low power loss and no mechanical contact. In vitro experiments with a mock loop test setup were performed to evaluate the performance of the new blood pump prototype. [source]


Large Di- and Heptafullerene Polyelectrolytes Composed of C60 Building Blocks Having a Highly Symmetrical Hexakisaddition Pattern

Abstract We report here on the synthesis of three new prototypes (types,I,III) of very large fullerene-based polyelectrolytes which can carry up to 60 charges on their periphery. All fullerene moieties incorporated in these macromolecular structures have an octahedral hexakisaddition pattern. Dumbbell-shaped icosacarboxylate 5 (type,I), which can accumulate up to twenty negative charges, is very soluble in methanol as well as in neutral and basic water. On the other hand, Janus dumbbell 13 (type,II) contains both positively and negatively chargeable fullerene building blocks and is very soluble in acidic and basic media. However, in the region of the isoelectric point at pH,6.0,6.5 it precipitates as a pale orange solid due to pronounced intermolecular Coulomb interactions. Giant heptafullerene 15 (type,III) can store up to 60 positive charges in its periphery and is the largest molecular polyelectrolyte with defined three-dimensional structure. [source]
