Selected AbstractsStandardized health check data from community-dwelling elderly people: the potential for comparing populations and estimating needHEALTH & SOCIAL CARE IN THE COMMUNITY, Issue 1 2000Peter Bath PhD Abstract The main aim of this study was to compare EASY-Care data obtained during nurse-administered annual health checks in two populations of older people. A secondary aim was to determine whether a standardized assessment system administered as part of routine practice by a trained nurse during the over-75 health check could generate useful information for comparing population health and functional status of community-dwelling-older people. One hundred and seventy-nine elderly people (aged 75 years and over) from the Woodstock ward, Belfast, having relatively high deprivation; and 238 elderly people from south Hampshire, ranging from affluent wards in New Forest to inner city wards, were assessed using the EASY-Care assessment system as part of their annual health check. There was a high response rate to the standardized assessment in both populations (75% and 79%). Compared to people in south Hampshire, the people in Belfast had higher relative risk of having fair/poor self-rated health, and lower relative risk of having good/sufficient accommodation and of having difficulty chewing. People in Belfast had a higher relative risk of being dependent for six of the seven IADL items and for continence of urine, bathing, grooming, use of the stairs and dressing among the ADL items. The results demonstrate the ability of data generated by assessment system to discriminate between populations of older people when used as part of routine practice. Differences in health and functional status may be associated with deprivation. Data collected during the annual health check about the health and functional status of older people could provide a useful adjunct to census and survey data to measure population needs and to support locality planning. [source] Movement characteristics of the Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly, Ischnura pumilioINSECT CONSERVATION AND DIVERSITY, Issue 1 2010KATHERINE A. ALLEN Abstract., 1. The Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly, Ischnura pumilio, is threatened in the UK and exists in small, transient colonies. Consequently, little is known about its dispersal characteristics. This study investigates movement in two contrasting habitats with the aim of informing conservation management on a landscape scale. 2. Mark-release-recapture studies were performed at an established colony in the New Forest and a smaller population in the Red River valley in southern England. A total of 2304 individuals was marked. 3. Ischnura pumilio was found to be exceptionally sedentary. Mean gross lifetime movement was 56 m and 43% of individuals moved <50 m in their lifetime. Movements over 150 m were very rare. Maximum lifetime movement was 1165 m. As such, I. pumilio is the most sedentary odonate studied in the UK to date. 4. Movement was inversely density dependent, which has important conservation implications if individuals attempt to emigrate from small populations because of low density. The presence of parasitic mites (Hydryphantes sp.) significantly increased movement distance. 5. Ischnura pumilio had a low dispersal probability compared to other damselflies. As the smallest British odonate, this is in keeping with the relationship between size and dispersal found across taxa. 6. Ischnura pumilio has been regarded as a ,wandering opportunist' due to its tendency to appear in locations far from known sites. However, this study suggests that long range movement rarely occurs from prime habitat that is maintained in an early successional stage. This has implications for the conservation of the species in the UK. [source] Ecology and conservation status of temporary and fluctuating ponds in two areas of southern EnglandAQUATIC CONSERVATION: MARINE AND FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS, Issue 2 2009D.T. Bilton Abstract 1.A high proportion of ponds are temporary in nature, although the biodiversity value of such sites is still poorly recognized. This work explores the plant and macroinvertebrate communities of 76 temporary and fluctuating water bodies in two regions of southern England (Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall and New Forest, Hampshire) that have retained high pond densities. The ecology and conservation status of sites is examined, and comparisons made with ponds elsewhere in England and Wales. 2.Lizard and New Forest ponds supported 119 plant and 165 macroinvertebrate species respectively. Patterns of community similarity for plants and macroinvertebrates were highly concordant, taxa being related in a similar manner to measured environmental variables including pond area, depth, pH and water chemistry. 3.Patterns of pond occupancy revealed that most species were locally rare, over half occurring in less than 10% of ponds, and less than 10% being recorded from more than 50% of sites. More than 50% of ponds supported at least one nationally rare plant and almost 75% at least one nationally rare macroinvertebrate. These taxa occupied a wide range of pond types in each region, and did not have predictably different ecologies from common species. 4.Comparisons with ponds elsewhere in England and Wales revealed that Lizard and New Forest communities are nationally distinct, being most similar to ponds in areas of low intensity agriculture elsewhere in western Britain. Individual ponds in both regions supported more nationally rare taxa, on average, than ponds sampled in the national survey. 5.Ponds in the two areas have high conservation value, both regionally and nationally, supporting almost 75% of the global species richness of temporary ponds sampled across England and Wales. [source] Impacts of Restored Patch Density and Distance from Natural Forests on Colonization SuccessRESTORATION ECOLOGY, Issue 4 2003Hans Jacquemyn Abstract The reduction and fragmentation of forest habitats is expected to have profound effects on plant species diversity as a consequence of the decreased area and increased isolation of the remnant patches. To stop the ongoing process of forest fragmentation, much attention has been given recently to the restoration of forest habitat. The present study investigates restoration possibilities of recently established patches with respect to their geographical isolation. Because seed dispersal events over 100 m are considered to be of long distance, a threshold value of 100 m between recent and old woodland was chosen to define isolation. Total species richness, individual patch species richness, frequency distributions in species occurrences, and patch occupancy patterns of individual species were significantly different among isolated and nonisolated stands. In the short term no high species richness is to be expected in isolated stands. Establishing new forests adjacent to existing woodland ensures higher survival probabilities of existing populations. In the long term, however, the importance of long-distance seed dispersal should not be underestimated because most species showed occasional long-distance seed dispersal. A clear distinction should be made between populations colonizing adjacent patches and patches isolated from old woodland. The colonization of isolated stands may have important effects on the dynamics and diversity of forest networks, and more attention should be directed toward the genetic traits and viability of founding populations in isolated stands.
