It first examines how the WTO panel has obliged the European Union to open its registration system to third countries and how the ongoing negotiations on GIs seem to be reaching stalemate. Initiatives showing how GIs are a key political and trade issue are identified in Turkey, India, China, Colombia and Ethiopia. Trade negotiation agendas have to handle this new balance of power, in which the reputation accompanying a good may become common. [source] Collectivism versus individualism in Dutch employment relationsHUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, Issue 1 2004Jan De Leede From a very centralistic and collectivistic tradition after World War Two, Dutch employment relations now show a trend towards radical decentralisation and individualisation. What might be the consequences of this trend for labour relations? Do developments still fit within a movement towards ,organised decentralisation' or will the existing system of labour relations be hollowed out and destroyed? And what will be the consequences for ER management at company level? We present empirical data on how companies deal with their decentralised and individualised employment relations. It appears that, in the main areas such as labour contracts, working time arrangements, reward systems and development plans, decentralisation and individualisation are taking place. It has also become clear that management as well as workers support this and that a new form of negotiation between them is developing at workplace level, resulting in what we call ,third contracts' that are additional to the initial labour contract and the collective agreement. Our results also highlight the pragmatic way in which companies deal with these decentralised and individualised employment relations, which, nevertheless, remain linked to the national and collective levels of bargaining. Within the multilevel system of Dutch employment relations a new balance between collectivism and individualism is emerging. [source] Alan Greenspan on the Economic Implications of Population AgingPOPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT REVIEW, Issue 4 2004Article first published online: 15 DEC 200 At the 2004 annual symposium of central bank leaders sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the US Federal Reserve Board, devoted his opening remarks on 27 August to a discussion of the economic implications of population aging. The full text of his remarks is reproduced below. Greenspan's high prestige and great influence on US economic policy lend special interest to his views on this much-discussed subject (see also the next Documents item in this issue). He outlines the coming demographic shift in the United States in language that is characteristically cautious and qualified. (The elderly dependency ratio will "almost certainly" rise as the baby boom generation retires, Greenspan says, although elsewhere he terms the process, more accurately, inexorable.) The main factor responsible for population aging he identifies as the decline of fertility. Immigration is an antidote, but, to be effective, its size would have to be much larger than is envisaged in current projections. Greenspan's assessment of the economic consequences of the changing age structure highlights the prospect of a deteriorating fiscal situation in the United States: chronic deficits in the Social Security program over the long haul, assuming that existing commitments for benefits per retiree are met, and even greater difficulties for the health care system for the elderly,Medicare,in which the effects of increasing numbers in old age are amplified by advances in medical technology and the bias inherent in the current system of subsidized third-party payments. The sober outline of policy choices imposed by population aging,difficult in the United States, but less so, Greenspan notes, than in Europe and Japan,underlies the need for counteracting the declining growth of the population of labor force age through greater labor force participation and later retirement. Beyond that, growth of output per worker can provide the key "that would enable future retirees to maintain their expected standard of living without unduly burdening future workers." This requires continuation of policies that enhance productivity, such as deregulation and globalization, and greater investment. In turn, the latter presupposes greater domestic saving, both personal and by the government, as the United States cannot "continue indefinitely to borrow saving from abroad." Demographic aging requires a new balance between workers and retirees. Curbing benefits once bestowed is difficult: only benefits that can be delivered should be promised. Public programs should be recalibrated, providing incentives for individuals to adjust to the inevitable consequences of an aging society. [source] Contrasting patterns of variation in urban populations of Cepaea (Gastropoda: Pulmonata): a tale of two citiesBIOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 1 2009ROBERT A. D. CAMERON The shell colour and banding polymorphisms in urban populations of Cepaea snails were studied in Sheffield (England) and Wroc,aw (Poland), which are two cities of similar size. Both Cepaea nemoralis and Cepaea hortensis were found in Sheffield, but only C. nemoralis was found in Wroc,aw. In neither city was variation with habitat apparent, nor was there evidence of large-scale geographical patterns. Spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed only vaguely defined local clusters. There was a greater degree of among-population variation in Sheffield, and more cases of extreme frequencies and low levels of polymorphism. Wroc,aw populations were more uniform and highly polymorphic. These differences can be related to the history of these snails in each city. Sheffield has been colonized mainly in the last 20 years, and some parts of the city with apparently suitable habitat remain unoccupied. Leptokurtic dispersal of small propagules followed by local spread appears likely. Values of FST resemble those seen in districts elsewhere with ,Area Effects'. Although there are ancient woodlands within the city, they have been colonized too recently for selection to achieve a new balance. Wroc,aw has held Cepaea populations for at least 100 years, and they are denser and more continuous. Shaded habitats are recent and temporary; the overall pattern of variation matches that seen in open habitats in districts elsewhere in which variation with habitat is apparent, and values of FST also correspond.
