Selected AbstractsAnt Activity along Moisture Gradients in a Neotropical Forest,BIOTROPICA, Issue 4a 2000Michael Kaspari ABSTRACT Insect activity often tracks moisture gradients. We studied ant activity, size, and diversity along three moisture gradients in a Panamanian rain forest. Ant activity at baits increased by 25 percent from the dry to the wet season, and > 200 percent on a topographical gradient from a ravine to an exposed plateau. Activity varied little from day to night. Three microhabitats,tree trunk, shrub, and litter,showed different responses to these three gradients. The size distribution of the species pool (N= 63) was right skewed, but the average size of ants at a bait was strongly bimodal. Ants active in moister times and places were not significantly smaller. We suggest that gradients of desiccation risk and food availability were the two most likely causes of these patterns. Two temporal niche axes (daily and seasonal) showed little species specialization, but half of the common species could be categorized as litter or plant microhabitat specialists. RESUMEN Nosotros estudiamos actividad de hormiga, tamaño, y diversidad en 4 microhabitats a lo largo de tres gradientes de humedad en un bosque Panameño. La actividad de hormiga aumentada por 25 percent desde la seca a la temporada mojada, y > 200 percent sobre un gradiente topográfico desde un barranco a una meseta expuesta. La actividad varió poco desde el día a la noche. Tres microhabitats,tronco de árbol, arbusto, y la hojarasca-mostró respuestas diferentes a estos tres de gradientes. DeWalt ABSTRACT We contrasted the structure and biomass of four lowland Neotropical forests (La Selva, Costa Rica; Barro Colorado Island, Panama; Cocha Cashu, Peru; and KM41, Brazil) to determine if commonalities exist within and among forests differing in latitude, rainfall, seasonality, and soil fertility. We examined the effect of soil fertility specifically by measuring the density and basal area of trees, lianas, and palms on two soil types differing in fertility at each site. We used allometric relationships to estimate the contribution of the various life-forms to total aboveground biomass (AGB) and compared two relationships for trees 30 cm diameter or greater. Estimated liana density and AGB were similar among sites, but the density and AGB of trees and palms, estimated using diameter alone, differed significantly. Basal area and AGB of trees 10 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) or greater differed among forests and averaged 30.2 m2/ha and 250 Mg/ha, respectively. Cocha Cashu and KM41 had higher tree basal area and AGB than La Selva or Barro Colorado Island. Across forests, lianas and small trees (1,10 cm DBH) each contributed between 4 and 5 percent of the total AGB and small palms contributed ca 1 percent. Many forest inventories ignore lianas, as well as trees and palms less than 10 cm DBH, and therefore underestimate AGB by ca 10 percent. Soil type had little influence on the forest structure within sites, except at Cocha Cashu where total AGB was much higher and liana density much lower on the more fertile old floodplain Entisols than the serra firme Oxisols. Although total stem density, basal area, and some biomass components differed significantly among forests, they seemed less variable than other quantitative measures (e.g., species richness). RESUMEN Contrastamos la estructura y la biomasa de cuatro bosques de bajura Neotropicales (La Selva, Costa Rica; Isla Barro Colorado, Panamá; Cocha Cashu, Perú; y KM41, Brasil) para determinar si existen patrones comunes entre bosques que difieren en la latitud, en la lluvia total, en la estacionalidad, y en la fertilidad de suelo. Examinamos el efecto de la fertilidad de suelo en cada sitio específicamente midiendo el área basal y densidad de árboles, lianas, y palmas en dos tipos de suelo que difieren en fertilidad. Usamos ecuaciones alométricas para estimar la contributión relativa de las varias formas de vida a la biomasa aérea (AGB) y comparamos dos ecuaciones para estimar biomasa con base en árboles , 30 cm diámetro. [source] Synergistic Effects of Subsistence Hunting and Habitat Fragmentation on Amazonian Forest VertebratesCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 6 2001Carlos A. Peres These effects are likely to be considerably aggravated by forest fragmentation because fragments are more accessible to hunters, allow no (or very low rates of ,) recolonization from nonharvested source populations, and may provide a lower-quality resource base for the frugivore-granivore vertebrate fauna. I examined the likelihood of midsized to large-bodied bird and mammal populations persisting in Amazonian forest fragments of variable sizes whenever they continue to be harvested by subsistence hunters in the aftermath of isolation. I used data from a comprehensive compilation of game-harvest studies throughout Neotropical forests to estimate the degree to which different species and populations have been overharvested and then calculated the range of minimum forest areas required to maintain a sustainable harvest. The size distribution of 5564 Amazonian forest fragments,estimated from Landsat images of six regions of southern and eastern Brazilian Amazonia,clearly shows that these are predominantly small and rarely exceed 10 ha, suggesting that persistent overhunting is likely to drive most midsized to large vertebrate populations to local extinction in fragmented forest landscapes. Although experimental studies on this negative synergism remain largely unavailable, the prospect that increasingly fragmented Neotropical forest regions can retain their full assemblages of avian and mammalian species is unlikely. [source] Army ants in four forests: geographic variation in raid rates and species compositionJOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2007SEAN O'DONNELL Summary 1The New World army ants are top predators in the litter of tropical forest, but no comprehensive studies exist on variation in assemblage-wide activity and species composition. We used standardized protocols to estimate foraging raid rates and species composition of army ant communities in four Neotropical forests. The study sites spanned approximately 10° latitude, with two sites each in Central and South America. 2We recorded a total of 22 species of army ants. The four sites varied in observed and estimated species richness. Species overlap was highest between the Central American sites, and lowest between the South American sites. 3Raid activity varied significantly among sites. Raid activity per kilometre of trail walks was over four times higher at the most active site (Sta. Maria, Venezuela) than at the least active site (Barro Colorado Island, Panama). Furthermore, each site showed a different diel pattern of activity. For example, raid activity was higher during daylight hours in Costa Rica, and higher at night in Venezuela. Raid activity relationships with ambient temperature also varied significantly among sites. 4The overall rate of army ant raids passing through 1 m2 plots was 0·73 raids per day, but varied among sites, from 0 raids per day (Panama) to 1·2 raids per day (Venezuela). 5Primarily subterranean species were significantly more abundant in Venezuela, and above-ground foragers that form large swarm fronts were least abundant in Panama. The site heterogeneity in species abundance and diel activity patterns has implications for army ant symbionts, including ant-following birds, and for the animals hunted by these top predators. [source] Ornithophilous canopy species in the Atlantic rain forest of southeastern BrazilJOURNAL OF FIELD ORNITHOLOGY, Issue 2 2008Márcia A. Rocca ABSTRACT In tropical ecosystems, birds play a relevant role in plant reproduction. Although hummingbirds are regarded as the most important vertebrate pollinators in the Neotropics, the possible role of perching birds as pollinators has been neglected. From 2003 to 2005, we observed 68 species of plants visited by birds in an Atlantic rainforest in southeastern Brazil, including three canopy species: Spirotheca rivieri (Malvaceae, Bombacoidea), Schwartzia brasiliensis (Marcgraviaceae), and Psittacanthus dichrous (Loranthaceae). Flowers of these three species were visited by 15 different species of perching birds and by hummingbirds. The flowers of these three plants are colorful, ranging from deep red or purple to orange. Spirotheca rivieri blooms during the austral winter and Schwartzia brasiliensis during the summer. The flowers of these two species produce copious amounts of dilute nectar in easily accessible structures and both species appear to depend primarily on perching birds as pollinators, with hummingbirds being secondary or minor pollen vectors. The tubular, narrow flowers of P. dichrous are produced during the austral summer and are visited primarily by hummingbirds. Perching birds also visit the flowers, but destroy them. Our results suggest that previous estimates of the number of perching birds that feed on nectar may be too low and that flowers pollinated by perching birds may be more common in the canopy of Neotropical forests than previously thought. SINOPSIS En los ecosistemas tropicales, las aves desempeñan un papel importante en la reproducción de las plantas. Aunque se consideran a los colibríes como el grupo más importante de polinizadores en el neotrópico, este posible rol ha sido relegado en las aves de percha. De 2003,2005, observamos 68 especies de plantas visitadas por aves en el Bosque Pluvial del Atlántico en el sudeste de Brasil. Las flores en el dosel de Spirotheca rivieri (Malvaceae, Bombacoidea), Schwartzia brasiliensis (Marcgraviaceae) y Psittacanthus dichrous (Loranthaceae) fueron visitadas por 15 especies de aves, siendo colibríes y especies de aves de percha. Las flores de estas plantas son de gran colorido, desde rojo subido o púrpura hasta anaranjado. Spirotheca rivieri florece durante el invierno austral y Schwartzia brasiliensis durante el verano. [source] Morphological and molecular analysis of bromeliad-inhabiting ciliates in EcuadorTHE JOURNAL OF EUKARYOTIC MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2005MICAH SAUL DUNTHORN The microbial inhabitants of Neotropical forests are poorly known. According to Finlay (2002, Science, 296:1061,1063) the majority of taxa in tropical forests should be previously described elsewhere. Conversely, Foissner (1999, Protist, 150:363,368) points to examples of endemic protists, and states that while we can identify the common species there are few trained taxonomists to identify the rare ones in large sampling investigations. To test these hypotheses, I am following up on an initial study of Foissner et al. (2003, Europ. J. Protistol., 39:365,372) of the ciliates inhabiting waters in canopy, sub-canopy and terrestrial bromeliad tanks in two Ecuadorian forests. Using morphological (protargol, silver nitrate, and silver carbonate stains; scanning electron micrographs) and molecular methods (SSU and ITS sequencing) I will concentrate my investigations on the colpodid taxa found free-living in the bromeliad tanks in two Ecuadorian forests. If I find many new taxa, Finlay's hypothesis may not be applicable to atleast bromeliad-inhabiting ciliates. [source] Game Vertebrate Densities in Hunted and Nonhunted Forest Sites in Manu National Park, PeruBIOTROPICA, Issue 2 2010Whaldener Endo ABSTRACT Manu National Park of southern Peru is one of the most renowned protected areas in the world, yet large-bodied vertebrate surveys conducted to date have been restricted to Cocha Cashu Biological Station, a research station covering <0.06 percent of the 1.7 Mha park. Manu Park is occupied by >460 settled Matsigenka Amerindians, 300,400 isolated Matsigenka, and several, little-known groups of isolated hunter,gatherers, yet the impact of these native Amazonians on game vertebrate populations within the park remains poorly understood. On the basis of 1495 km of standardized line-transect censuses, we present density and biomass estimates for 23 mammal, bird, and reptile species for seven lowland and upland forest sites in Manu Park, including Cocha Cashu. We compare these estimates between hunted and nonhunted sites within Manu Park, and with other Neotropical forest sites. Manu Park safeguards some of the most species-rich and highest biomass assemblages of arboreal and terrestrial mammals ever recorded in Neotropical forests, most likely because of its direct Andean influence and high levels of soil fertility. Relative to Barro Colorado Island, seed predators and arboreal folivores in Manu are rare, and generalist frugivores specializing on mature fruit pulp are abundant. The impact of such a qualitative shift in the vertebrate community on the dynamics of plant regeneration, and therefore, on our understanding of tropical plant ecology, must be profound. Despite a number of external threats, Manu Park continues to serve as a baseline against which other Neotropical forests can be gauged. [source] Persisting Hyper-abundance of Leaf-cutting Ants (Atta spp.) at the Edge of an Old Atlantic Forest FragmentBIOTROPICA, Issue 6 2009Sebastian T. Meyer ABSTRACT Leaf-cutting ants (LCAs) profoundly benefit from edge creation in Neotropical forests, where they act as a keystone species and disturbance agent. In view of their poorly explored population dynamics, the question arises whether high densities of LCAs are a transitional or a persisting phenomenon. We studied the temporal variation of LCA colony densities at the edge of the Brazilian Atlantic forest. At physically stable edges of an old forest fragment, densities of Atta cephalotes and Atta sexdens (11 and five times higher in a 50 m edge zone in comparison with the forest interior) persisted over a 4-yr interval (2001,2005) with no significant difference in densities between years. Species-specific per colony growth rates ranged from 12 to ,5 percent/yr, suggesting that populations were approximately at equilibrium. High rates of colony turnover (little less than 50% in 4 yr) indicated an average colony life span of about 7 yr,a life expectancy considerably lower than previous estimates for Atta colonies. Stable, hyper-abundant populations of LCAs accord with the constantly high availability of palatable pioneer vegetation (the preferred food source of LCAs) at forest edges and are expected to persist in time as long as forests are characterized by high edge to interior ratios, with potentially long-lasting consequences for the ecosystem. [source] Species Composition of Neotropical Understory Bird Communities: Local Versus Regional Perspectives Based on Capture DataBIOTROPICA, Issue 1 2009John G. Blake ABSTRACT Species richness and composition of bird assemblages found in the understory of undisturbed Neotropical forests vary at local and regional scales but the extent of that variation has not been well documented. Yet, such variation can be important for understanding patterns of diversity and for conservation. Here, we use capture data from two ca 100-ha study plots (sampled from March 2001 through March 2005) to compare understory assemblages at a local scale; nets on the plots were separated by approximately 1.7 km at the closest point. A total of 157 species (133 per plot) was represented in 6023 captures of 4001 individuals. After eliminating species not likely to be well-sampled with nets, there were 122 species total with 110 and 113 on the two plots, respectively. Species-accumulation curves and abundance-rank relationships were almost identical on both plots. Capture rates were high (53 and 56 birds captured per 100 mist-net-hours, mnh) on both plots. Distributions of species and individuals among families and genera were similar on the two plots but numbers of captures of some common species differed between plots in response to small-scale variation in environmental features. Indicator-species analyses selected seven species as more characteristic of one plot and nine as more characteristic of the other. At the regional level, understory assemblages were most similar to a site in Peru but differed from sites in Brazil, Venezuela, and, especially, Costa Rica. Dissimilarity in species richness per family was related to geographic distance only when Costa Rica was included in the analysis. RESUMEN La riqueza de especies y la composición de ensambles de aves de sotobosque en bosques neotropicales varían a escala local y regional, pero el grado de variación no ha sido bien documentado. Sin embargo, esta variación puede ser importante para entender los patrones de diversidad y para conservación. En este trabajo usamos datos de captura de dos parcelas de ca 100-ha (muestreados entre Marzo 2001 y Marzo 2005) para comparar los ensambles de aves de sotobosque a escala local; las redes en las dos parcelas estuvieron ubicadas a una distancia mínima aproximada de 1.7 km. Un total de 157 especies (133 por parcela) estuvieron representadas por 6023 capturas correspondientes a 4001 individuos. Una vez eliminadas aquellas especies que no son factibles de ser muestreadas adecuadamente con redes, el total de especies fue de 122, con 110 y 113 en cada una de los parcelas, respectivamente. Las curvas de acumulación de especies y las relaciones abundancia-rango fueron casi idénticas en ambas parcelas. Las tasas de captura fueron altas (53 y 56 aves capturadas por 100 horas red). La distribución de especies e individuos entre familias y géneros fueron similares en las dos parcelas, pero los números de captura de algunas especies comunes difirieron entre las parcelas en respuesta a la variación de características ambientales a pequeña escala. A nivel regional los ensambles de aves de sotobosque fueron más similares a aquellos presentes en un sitio en Perú, pero fueron diferentes a los presentes en sitios de Brasil, Venezuela y especialmente Costa Rica. [source] Carrying Capacity and Potential Production of Ungulates for Human Use in a Mexican Tropical Dry ForestBIOTROPICA, Issue 4 2007Salvador Mandujano ABSTRACT Data are provided on the carrying capacity and potential production for sustainable human use of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) in a protected tropical dry forest at Chamela on the Pacific coast of Mexico. In this paper, the carrying capacity was defined as the equilibrium density plus the number of animals removed by predators. The equilibrium point was estimated from the density dependent relationship between the finite population growth rate and the current density according to a logistic model. Annual density was estimated using the line transect method. Carrying capacity estimates were 16.5 to 17.2 deer/km2 and 9.3,9.5 peccaries/km2, representing a combined biomass of 841,874 kg/km2. A potential production for human use of 2.1 deer/km2 and 4.4 peccaries/km2 was estimated employing the model of Robinson and Redford (1991). The data suggest that, in the protected tropical dry forest of Chamela, the density and biomass of wild ungulates can maintain a similar or greater density and biomass than other Neotropical forests. To obtain an accurate estimation of the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), it is necessary to consider predation. From a management point of view, it is important to consider that carrying capacity varies as a function of the rainfall pattern. RESUMEN Se presentan datos acerca de la capacidad de carga y la producción potencial del venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus) y pecarí de collar (Pecari tajacu) para aprovechamiento humano en un bosque tropical seco de Chamela en la costa Pacífica de México. En este trabajo se definió capacidad de carga como la densidad en el punto de equilibrio del crecimiento poblacional más el número de animales removidos por los depredadores. La densidad en equilibrio se estimó a partir de la relación de denso-dependencia entre la tasa finita de crecimiento poblacional y la densidad anual de acuerdo al modelo logístico. La densidad anual se estimó empleando el método de transecto de línea. La capacidad de carga se estimó en 16.5 a 17.2 venados/km2 y 9.3 a 9.5 pecaries/km2, y una biomasa combinada de 841 a 874 kg/km2. Empleando el modelo de Robinson y Redford (1991) se estimó una producción potencial para aprovechamiento humano de 2.1 venados/km2 y 4.4 pecaries/km2. Los datos indican que en bosque tropical seco protegido de Chamela la densidad y biomasa de los ungulados silvestres puede ser similar o mayor en comparación con otros bosques neotropicales. Para obtener una estimación precisa de la cosecha máxima sostenible es importante considerar el efecto de la depredación. Desde una perspectiva de manejo, se debe incorporar la variación en la capacidad de carga en función del patrón de lluvias. Cocha Cashu and KM41 had higher tree basal area and AGB than La Selva or Barro Colorado Island. Across forests, lianas and small trees (1,10 cm DBH) each contributed between 4 and 5 percent of the total AGB and small palms contributed ca 1 percent. Many forest inventories ignore lianas, as well as trees and palms less than 10 cm DBH, and therefore underestimate AGB by ca 10 percent. Soil type had little influence on the forest structure within sites, except at Cocha Cashu where total AGB was much higher and liana density much lower on the more fertile old floodplain Entisols than the serra firme Oxisols. Although total stem density, basal area, and some biomass components differed significantly among forests, they seemed less variable than other quantitative measures (e.g., species richness). RESUMEN Contrastamos la estructura y la biomasa de cuatro bosques de bajura Neotropicales (La Selva, Costa Rica; Isla Barro Colorado, Panamá; Cocha Cashu, Perú; y KM41, Brasil) para determinar si existen patrones comunes entre bosques que difieren en la latitud, en la lluvia total, en la estacionalidad, y en la fertilidad de suelo. Examinamos el efecto de la fertilidad de suelo en cada sitio específicamente midiendo el área basal y densidad de árboles, lianas, y palmas en dos tipos de suelo que difieren en fertilidad. Usamos ecuaciones alométricas para estimar la contributión relativa de las varias formas de vida a la biomasa aérea (AGB) y comparamos dos ecuaciones para estimar biomasa con base en árboles , 30 cm diámetro. La densidad y AGB estimada de lianas fueron similares entre sitios, pero la densidad y AGB de árboles y palmas estimada en base solamente a diámetros fueron significativamente distintas. Muller-Landau ABSTRACT Variation in climate and soils results in inter-site differences in the assemblages of tree life history strategies within a community, which has important implications for ecosystem structure and dynamics. I investigated interspecific and inter-site variation in wood specific gravity,an easily measured indicator of tree life history strategy,in four Neotropical forests and analyzed its correlates. Mean wood specific gravity (oven-dry weight divided by fresh volume, sometimes also referred to as wood density in the literature) differed significantly among sites, varying inversely with soil fertility and independently of rainfall, seasonality, and temperature. Mean wood specific gravity values were much higher at Kilometer 41, Manaus, Brazil, where soils are extremely poor, than at Cocha Cashu, Peru, Barro Colorado Island, Panama, or La Selva, Costa Rica, where soils are better and mortality rates of trees are higher. Within sites, wood specific gravity varied widely among species. On Barro Colorado Island, among-species variation was significantly, albeit weakly, negatively correlated with sapling and tree mortality and relative growth rates. Altogether, the results suggest that the distribution of tree life history strategies in a community varies substantially among sites, with important consequences for community and ecosystem properties such as aboveground carbon stores. Among forests, I explored the response of root traits to sites varying in water or nutrient availability. Within each forest, I explored the plastic response of species to different microhabitats: gaps and understory. Additionally, I explored evidence for life history correlation of root and shoot traits by comparing species differing in their successional group (light-demanding [22 spp.] or shade tolerant [27 spp.]) and germination type (species with photosynthetic cotyledons or species with reserve cotyledons). At each forest site, young seedlings from 10 to 20 species were excavated. A total of 55 species was collected in understory conditions and 31 of them were also collected in gaps. From each seedling, six morphological ratios were determined. Allocation to roots was higher in forest sites with the lowest soil resources. Roots were finer and longer in the most infertile site, while roots were deeper in the site with the longest dry season. Seedling traits did not differ between germination types. Shade tolerant species allocated more to roots and developed thicker roots than light-demanding species. Light-demanding species showed stronger plastic responses to habitat than shade tolerant species, and species with photo-synthetic cotyledons showed lower plasticity than species with reserve cotyledons. Overall, these results suggest that among Neotropical species, root allocation and root morphology of seedlings reflect plant adjustments to water or nutrient availability at geographic and microhabitat scales. In addition, life history specialization to light environments is suggested by differences among groups of species in their allocation to roots and in their root morphology. RESUMEN Analicé los patrones de variación en la asignación de biomasa y en la morfología de raíces de plántulas de especies leñosas en relación a factores ambientales en cuatro bosques Neotropicales. Entre los bosques, exploré la respuesta promedia de características de las plántulas en sitios que varían en disponibilidad de agua o nutrientes en el suelo. Dentro de cada bosque, exploré la respuesta fenotípica de las especies entre claros y sotobosque. Además, explore correlaciones de la historia de vida de las especies con características de raíces y parte aérea, comparando especies con diferente hábito sucesional (demandante de luz [22 spp.] o tolerante a la sombra [27 spp.]) y tipo de germinación (especies con cotiledones fotosintéticos o cotiledones de reserva). En cada bosque, se excavaron plántulas de 10 a 20 especies manteniendo la integridad de sus raíces. Se colectaron 55 especies en el sotobosque y 31 de ellas fueron colectadas también en claros. De cada plántula obtuve seis parámetros morfológicos de raíces y parte aérea. La asignación de biomasa a raíces fue mayor en los bosques con menos recursos. MYERS Summary 1To survive in forest understoreys, seedlings must depend on carbohydrate reserves when they experience negative carbon balance imposed by occasional light reduction and tissue loss to herbivores and diseases. We present the first experimental evidence in support of this hypothesis, using seven woody neotropical species. 2We transplanted seedlings that had recently expanded their first photosynthetic cotyledon or leaf to the forest understorey (1% of full sun) and quantified initial biomass and total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) in stems, roots and storage cotyledons. We then randomly assigned seedlings to control and two stress treatments: light reduction (0.08% of full sun for 8 weeks) and complete defoliation. 3First-year survival of control seedlings, a comparative measure of shade tolerance, differed widely among species. The two stress treatments reduced survival and relative growth rates (RGR) of all species. Shade-tolerant species were little impacted by the stress treatments, whereas the two least shade-tolerant species experienced 100% mortality. 4In all treatments, 8-week and first-year survival was positively correlated with initial TNC pool size in stems and roots. By contrast, survival was generally not correlated with initial TNC concentration in any organ, TNC pools in cotyledons, seed mass or seedling biomass. 5TNC in stems and roots, but not in cotyledons, decreased in response to light reduction and defoliation over 8 weeks. Leaf area recovery of defoliated seedlings was positively correlated with initial TNC pools in stems and roots. 6First-year survival in each treatment was negatively correlated with 0,8 week RGR of control seedlings, suggesting higher stress tolerance of species with inherently slow growth rates in shade. RGR of control seedlings from 0 to 8 weeks was negatively correlated with initial TNC pools, but not concentrations, in stems and roots. After 8 weeks, RGR was positive for all species, without clear relationships with survival or TNC. 7We conclude that carbohydrate storage in stems and roots enhances long-term survival in shade by enabling seedlings to cope with periods of biotic and abiotic stress. Krause Abstract Acclimation to periodic high-light stress was studied in tree seedlings from a neotropical forest. Seedlings of several pioneer and late-succession species were cultivated under simulated tree-fall gap conditions; they were placed under frames covered with shade cloth with apertures of different widths that permitted defined periods of daily leaf exposure to direct sunlight. During direct sun exposure, all plants exhibited a marked reversible decline in potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, determined by means of the ratio of variable to maximum Chl a fluorescence (Fv/Fm). The decline in Fv/Fm under full sunlight was much stronger in late-succession than in pioneer species. For each gap size, all species exhibited a similar degree of de-epoxidation of violaxanthin in direct sunlight and similar pool sizes of xanthophyll cycle pigments. Pool sizes increased with increasing gap size. Pioneer plants possessed high levels of , -carotene that also increased with gap size, whereas , -carotene decreased. In contrast to late-succession plants, pioneer plants were capable of adjusting their Chl a/b ratio to a high value in wide gaps. The content of extractable UV-B-absorbing compounds was highest in the plants acclimated to large gaps and did not depend on the successional status of the plants. The results demonstrate a better performance of pioneer species under high-light conditions as compared with late-succession plants, manifested by reduced photoinhibition of PSII in pioneer species. This was not related to increased pool size and turnover of xanthophyll cycle pigments, nor to higher contents of UV-B-absorbing substances. It is particularly unclear how changes in land-use or tropical storm patterns may affect the resiliency of phosphorus (P)-limited neotropical forests. In these systems, vegetation is sustained in the long-term by atmospheric P-inputs through rainfall, dust, or fog. Past research supports the idea that dust and fog deposition are dependent on canopy density (e.g. leaf area index). Thus, the canopy may function as a ,trap' for P, enabling a positive feedback between vegetation and P-deposition. We developed a conceptual model to investigate how Neotropical vegetation may respond to reduced P-deposition due to canopy losses. The model suggests that a canopy-deposition feedback may induce bistable vegetation dynamics; under some conditions, forests may be unable to naturally recover from relatively small disturbances. Stevenson Abstract The contribution of vertebrate animals to nutrient cycling has proven to be important in various ecosystems. However, the role of large bodied primates in nutrient transport in neotropical forests is not well documented. Here, we assess the role of a population of woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagothricha lugens) as vectors of nutrient movement through seed dispersal. We estimated total seed biomass transported by the population within and between two habitats (terra firme and flooded forests) at Tinigua Park, Colombia, and quantified potassium (K), phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) content in seeds of 20 plant species from both forests. Overall, the population transported an estimated minimum of 11.5 (±1.2 SD),g of potassium, 13.2 (±0.7),g of phosphorus and 34.3 (±0.1),g nitrogen, within 22.4 (±2.0),kg of seeds ha,1,y,1. Approximately 84% of all nutrients were deposited in the terra firme forest mostly through recycling processes, and also through translocation from the flooded forest. This type of translocation represents an important and high-quality route of transport since abiotic mechanisms do not usually move nutrients upwards, and since chemical tests show that seeds from flooded forests have comparatively higher nutrient contents. The overall contribution to nutrient movement by the population of woolly monkeys is significant because of the large amount of biomass transported, and the high phosphorus content of seeds. As a result, the phosphorus input generated by these monkeys is of the same order of magnitude as other abiotic mechanisms of nutrient transport such as atmospheric deposition and some weathering processes. Our results suggest that via seed dispersal processes, woolly monkey populations can contribute to nutrient movement in tropical forests, and may act as important nutrient input vectors in terra firme forests.
