Psychosocial Adjustment of People with Epilepsy in Hong Kong

EPILEPSIA, Issue 9 2001
Vanessa W. Y. Lau
Summary: ,Purpose: In light of the issues associated with the psychosocial adjustment of people with epilepsy that have been widely reported, this study examined these issues within a Chinese cultural context. Methods: Fifty patients with epilepsy completed The Washington Psychosocial Inventory, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, and a questionnaire that assessed their psychosocial difficulties and coping styles. Multiple regression procedure was used to examine the strength of various medical and social factors in predicting the psychosocial adjustment problems of these participants. Results: Social factors, such as self-perception and coping strategies, were more powerful predictors of psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy than the medical factors associated with epilepsy. Conclusions: These findings showed that psychosocial maladjustment is a significant issue for people with epilepsy in Hong Kong. The emerging importance of social factors as predictors of psychosocial adjustment in epilepsy, as compared with medical factors, highlights the need for developing tailored counseling therapy and social support groups for people with epilepsy. Identification of Novel CDK2 Inhibitors by QSAR and Virtual Screening Procedures

MOLECULAR INFORMATICS, Issue 11-12 2008
Ajay Babu, Padavala
Abstract Quantitative Structure,Activity Relationship (QSAR) studies were carried out on a set of 46 imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines, imidazo[1,2-b]pyridazines and 2,4-bis anilino pyrimidines, and nitroso-6-aminopyrimidine and 2,6-diaminopyrimidine inhibitors of CDK2 (Cyclin-dependent Kinase2) using a multiple regression procedure. The activity contributions of these compounds were determined from regression equation and the validation procedures such as external set cross-validation r2, (R2cv,ext) and the regression of observed activities against predicted activities and vice versa for validation set were described to analyze the predictive ability of the QSAR model. An accurate and reliable QSAR model involving five descriptors was chosen based on the FIT Kubinyi function which defines the statistical quality of the model. The proposed model due to its high predictive ability was utilized to screen similar repertoire of compounds reported in the literature, and the biological activities are estimated. The screening study clearly demonstrated that the strategy presented shall be used as an alternative to the time-consuming experiments as the model tolerated a variety of structural modifications signifying its potential for drug design studies. Direct and interactive effects of occupational stress and coping on ulcer-like symptoms among Chinese male off-shore oil workers

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE, Issue 6 2009
Wei-Qing Chen
Abstract Background Off-shore oil production is widely regarded as a stressful occupation and digestive system problems were commonly observed in off-shore oil workers. Is occupational stress from off-shore oil work associated with the occurrence of digestive problems among off-shore oil workers? And are coping styles also related to their occurrence? The aim of this study was to explore the direct and interactive association of occupational stress and coping styles with ulcer-like symptoms in Chinese male off-shore oil workers. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 561 Chinese male off-shore oil workers. They were invited to fill in a self-administered questionnaire exploring their socio-demographic characteristics, occupational stress, coping style, and ulcer-like symptoms. A stepwise multiple regression procedure was used to assess the direct and interactive effects of occupational stress and coping behaviors on ulcer-like symptoms. Results After controlling for age, educational level, marital status and years of off-shore working, the ulcer-like symptoms were significantly positively associated with occupational stress and "internal behavior" coping methods, negatively associated with external/social behavior coping methods, and positively associated with the interaction between occupational stress and internal behavior coping. Conclusion The results of the present study suggest that occupational stress was associated with gastric health problems and that this association might be moderated by certain coping behaviors. Am. Post-stroke quality of life and depression

ACTA NEUROPSYCHIATRICA, Issue 5 2002
Krystyna Jaracz
Background: Studies on the determinants of the quality of life (QOL) after stroke bring differing results depending on the applied concept of QOL. This may lead to confusion about the contribution of various factors to the post-stroke QOL. Objective: The aim of the study was: (i) to investigate functional and psychological QOL in the individuals after the first ischemic stroke; (ii) to identify the most important correlates of QOL; and (iii) to examine the significance of depression among the other possible predictors of QOL. Methods: A hospital-based sample of 72 stroke patients was followed up to 6 months after stroke onset. QOL was assessed using the Polish version of the Quality of Life Index and the Sickness Impact Profile. A multiple regression procedure was performed to examine relationships between QOL and the study variables. Results: In spite of good recovery, the psychological and functional QOL of the examined patients was impaired, although the negative impact of stroke was greater on the objective QOL than on the subjective QOL. Stroke-related impairment, depression, functional disability and marital status predicted 80% of the variance in the functional QOL. Emotional support, depression and functional disability explained 38% of the variance in psychological well-being. Conclusions: Depression and physical disability were the most important predictors of QOL after stroke since their impact on QOL was more robust in comparison to the remaining variables. For improving QOL, a comprehensive care for patients aimed at reducing physical dependence and ameliorating depressive symptoms could be recommended. [source]
