Expression of multiple class three semaphorins in the retina and along the path of zebrafish retinal axons

DEVELOPMENTAL DYNAMICS, Issue 10 2007
Davon C. Callander
Abstract Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) extend axons that exit the eye, cross the midline at the optic chiasm, and synapse on target cells in the optic tectum. Class three semaphorins (Sema3s) are a family of molecules known to direct axon growth. We undertook an expression screen to identify sema3s expressed in the retina and/or brain close to in-growing RGC axons, which might therefore influence retinal-tectal pathfinding. We find that sema3Aa, 3Fa, 3Ga, and 3Gb are expressed in the retina, although only sema3Fa is present during the time window when the axons extend. Also, we show that sema3Aa and sema3E are present near or at the optic chiasm. Furthermore, sema3C, 3Fa, 3Ga, and 3Gb are expressed in regions of the diencephalon near the path taken by RGC axons. Finally, the optic tectum expresses sema3Aa, 3Fa, 3Fb, and 3Gb. Thus, sema3s are spatiotemporally placed to influence RGC axon growth. Generalization of belief and plausibility functions to fuzzy sets based on the sugeno integral

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, Issue 11 2007
Chao-Ming Hwang
Uncertainty has been treated in science for several decades. It always exists in real systems. Probability has been traditionally used in modeling uncertainty. Belief and plausibility functions based on the Dempster,Shafer theory (DST) become another method of measuring uncertainty, as they have been widely studied and applied in diverse areas. Conversely, a fuzzy set has been successfully used as the idea of partial memberships of multiple classes for the presentation of unsharp boundaries. It is well used as the representation of human knowledge in complex systems. Nowadays, there exist several generalizations of belief and plausibility functions to fuzzy sets in the literature. In this article, we propose a new generalization of belief and plausibility functions to fuzzy sets based on the Sugeno integral. We then make comparisons of the proposed generalization with some existing methods. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed generalization, especially for being able to catch more information about the change of fuzzy focal elements. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. How does acantholysis occur in pemphigus vulgaris: a critical review

JOURNAL OF CUTANEOUS PATHOLOGY, Issue 6 2006
Alessandro Lanza
Background:, Pemphigus vulgaris is a life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease targeting skin and mucous membranes, characterized by disruption of keratinocytes' adhesion termed acantholysis. Today multiple classes of targets are considered to play a role in the genesis of the acantholysis; of these, the classical pemphigus antigens, desmosomal cadherins (desmoglein 1 and 3) are the best characterized and considered as the most important. Additional antigens include the novel epithelial acetylcholine receptors (,9 and pemphaxin). Thus, acantholysis in pemphigus seems to result from a cooperative action of antibodies to different keratinocyte self-antigens, but the mechanisms by which epithelial cleft occurs are not yet clearly understood. In fact, the binding of the autoantibodies to these targets generates a plethora of biological effects due, on one hand, to their direct interference with adhesive function and, on the other, to more complex events involving intracellular pathways that modify proteases activity or calcium metabolism, leading to loss of cell, cell adhesion. Wheat demand in Japanese flour milling industry: a production theory approach

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, Issue 2 2001
Won W. Koo
Abstract A production approach based on the translog cost function is used to analyze import demand for wheat differentiated by class and country of origin in the Japanese wheat flour milling industry. Results indicate that US wheat faces strong competition in the Japanese wheat market, but its multiple classes and end-use characteristics enable the US to preserve the largest market share in Japan. From proteomics to systems biology of bacterial pathogens: Approaches, tools, and applications

PROTEINS: STRUCTURE, FUNCTION AND BIOINFORMATICS, Issue 6 2007
Uwe Plikat Dr.
Abstract The hallmark of a systems biology approach is the integration of computational tools with experimental data encompassing multiple classes of biomolecules across different functional levels. Equally important as the availability of reasonably comprehensive information at the gene, protein, and metabolite levels is the development of adequate analysis and visualization tools to reduce the inherent complexity to interpretable dimensions. In this paper, we describe the integration of a 2-D gel-based proteome map of Staphylococcus aureus Mu50 with genomic and transcriptomic information through a customized data integration and user interface built on the Ensembl genome browser. We illustrate its application and potential through the analysis of a defined system perturbation caused by a mutation in the formyltransferase gene. We envision that this software package, which we called Insieme, can support the development of novel antibiotics by allowing a systems-based view of the bacterial response pathways. [source]

Sequencing of Hormonal Therapy in Breast Cancer

THE BREAST JOURNAL, Issue 6 2002
James N. Ingle MD
Hormonal therapy plays an integral role in the management of the majority of women with breast cancer who can be considered to have hormone-dependent breast cancer because of the presence of the molecular predictive markers, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor. Numerous hormonal agents are available from multiple classes of drugs, including selective estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors, progestins, androgens, and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues. Multiple clinical trials involving these agents have been conducted which permit an evidence-based approach to the development of a sequencing strategy for treatment of women with breast cancer.
