    p16 Immunoreactivity in unusual types of cervical adenocarcinoma does not reflect human papillomavirus infection

However, the prevalence of HPV in unusual morphological types of cervical adenocarcinoma has not been investigated extensively. The aim was to determine HPV status in a series of primary cervical adenocarcinomas, enriched for unusual morphological types. The relationship between HPV and p16 immunoreactivity in these neoplasms was also investigated, as it is generally assumed that in cervical neoplasms diffuse p16 expression is predictive of the presence of high-risk HPV. Methods and results:, Sixty-three cervical adenocarcinomas, comprising those of usual type (n = 43), minimal deviation type (n = 4), gastric type (n = 3), intestinal type (n = 3), mesonephric type (n = 3), clear cell type (n = 4), serous type (n = 2) and hepatoid type (n = 1) underwent linear array HPV genotyping and immunohistochemistry for p16. Overall, HPV was identified in 32 of 56 cases (57%) in which sufficient DNA was present for analysis. The most common HPV types were 16 and 18, with these being identified in 20 and 18 cases, respectively, either alone or in combination. Seventy-eight per cent of usual-type adenocarcinomas were HPV-positive, as was the single serous carcinoma in which there was sufficient DNA for analysis. In contrast, all minimal deviation adenocarcinomas and those of gastric, intestinal, mesonephric and clear cell types were HPV-negative, as was the single hepatoid carcinoma. All usual-type adenocarcinomas exhibited p16 immunoreactivity (diffuse staining in all but one case), as did 11 of 20 of those of unusual morphological type (five focal, six diffuse). Conclusions:, Most, but not all, cervical adenocarcinomas of usual type contain HPV, but those of unusual morphological type are almost always HPV-negative. This has implications for the efficacy of HPV vaccination in the prevention of cervical adenocarcinoma. A significant proportion of cervical adenocarcinomas are p16-positive in the absence of HPV, illustrating that in these neoplasms diffuse p16 immunoreactivity is not a reliable surrogate marker of the presence of high-risk HPV.     Star formation in close pairs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    ABSTRACT The effect of galaxy interactions on star formation has been investigated using Data Release One of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Both the imaging and spectroscopy data products have been used to construct a catalogue of nearest companions to a volume-limited (0.03 < z < 0.1) sample of galaxies drawn from the main galaxy sample of SDSS. Of the 13 973 galaxies in the volume-limited sample, we have identified 12 492 systems with companions at projected separations less than 300 kpc. Star formation rates for the volume-limited sample have been calculated from extinction and aperture corrected H, luminosities and, where available, IRAS data. Specific star formation rates were calculated by estimating galaxy masses from z -band luminosities, and r -band concentration indices were used as an indicator of morphological class. The mean specific star formation rate is significantly enhanced for projected separations less than 30 kpc. For late-type galaxies, the correlation extends out to projected separations of 300 kpc and is most pronounced in actively star-forming systems. The specific star formation rate is observed to decrease with increasing recessional velocity difference, but the magnitude of this effect is small compared to that associated with the projected separation. We also observe a tight relationship between the concentration index and pair separation; the mean concentration index is largest for pairs with separations of approximately 75 kpc and declines rapidly for separations smaller than this. This is interpreted as being due to the presence of tidally triggered nuclear starbursts in close pairs. Further, we find no dependence of star formation enhancement on the morphological type or mass of the companion galaxy. [source]


    Cholinergic axons in the rat ventral tegmental area synapse preferentially onto mesoaccumbens dopamine neurons

    Abstract Cholinergic afferents to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) contribute substantially to the regulation of motivated behaviors and the rewarding properties of nicotine. These actions are believed to involve connections with dopamine (DA) neurons projecting to the nucleus accumbens (NAc). However, this direct synaptic link has never been investigated, nor is it known whether cholinergic inputs innervate other populations of DA and ,-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons, including those projecting to the prefrontal cortex (PFC). We addressed these questions by using electron microscopic analysis of retrograde tract-tracing and immunocytochemistry for the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) and for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and GABA. In tissue labeled for TH, VAChT+ terminals frequently synapsed onto DA mesoaccumbens neurons but only seldom contacted DA mesoprefrontal cells. In tissue labeled for GABA, one-third of VAChT+ terminals innervated GABA-labeled dendrites, including both mesoaccumbens and mesoprefrontal populations. VAChT+ synapses onto DA and mesoaccumbens neurons were more commonly of the asymmetric (presumed excitatory) morphological type, whereas VAChT+ synapses onto GABA cells were more frequently symmetric (presumed inhibitory or modulatory). These findings suggest that cholinergic inputs to the VTA mediate complex synaptic actions, with a major portion of this effect likely to involve an excitatory influence on DA mesoaccumbens neurons. As such, the results suggest that natural and drug rewards operating through cholinergic afferents to the VTA have a direct synaptic link to the mesoaccumbens DA neurons that modulate approach behaviors.     A study of major mergers using a multi-phase ISM code

    Abstract Galaxy interactions are a common phenomenon in clusters of galaxies. Especially major mergers are of particular importance, because they can change the morphological type of galaxies. They have an impact on the mass function of galaxies and they trigger star formation , the main driver of the Galactic Matter Cycle. Therefore, we conducted a study of major mergers by means of a multi-phase ISM code. This code is based on a TREE-SPH-code combined with a sticky particle method allowing for star formation controlled by the properties of a multi-phase ISM. This is in contrast to the usually implemented Schmidt law depending mainly on the gas density. Previously, this code was used on isolated galaxies. Since our star formation recipe is not restricted to a special type of galaxy, it is interesting to apply it to interacting galaxies, too. Our study on major mergers includes a research of global properties of the interacting system, namely the star formation rate and the star formation efficiency, the evaporation and condensation rates, as well as the mass exchange of distinct components, namely stars, diffuse ISM, and clouds. Investigating these properties provides insight to interrelations between various physical processes.     Centrally necrotizing carcinoma of the breast: clinicopathological analysis of 33 cases indicating its basal-like phenotype and poor prognosis

Methods and results:, The clinical and pathological characteristics of 33 CNCs were reviewed. Immunohis-tochemical study of oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, HER2, cytokeratin (CK) 8/18, high-molecular-weight CK (34,E12), CK5/6, CK14, CK17, smooth muscle antigen, p63, vimentin and epidermal growth factor receptor was performed. The striking feature of CNC was a central, necrotic or acellular zone surrounded by a ring-like area of viable tumour cells. The central zone showed three morphological types: predominance of coagulative necrosis (21 cases), predominance of fibrosis and scar tissue (nine cases) and infarction (three cases). Tumour cells displayed invasive ductal carcinoma of high grade. The expression rate of basal-like markers was higher than that of myoepithelial markers (87.9% versus 46.2%). Basal-like subtype was shown by 63.6% of cases. The expression rate of CK5/6 (90.5%) was highest among basal-like markers. Follow-up data of 19 patients were available. Median progression-free survival was 15.5 months. In 12 patients (63.2%), local recurrence and/or distant metastasis developed (median time to recurrence and/or metastasis, 14.0 months). Conclusions:, CNC has distinctive morphological features, which mostly exhibit a basal-like immunophenotype and poor prognosis. CNC is a typical representative of basal-like breast cancer. [source]


    Examination of whewellite kidney stones by scanning electron microscopy and powder neutron diffraction techniques

    Kidney stones made of whewellite, i.e. calcium oxalate monohydrate, exhibit various morphological aspects. The crystalline structure of whewellite at the atomic scale was revisited through a single-crystal neutron study at room temperature using a four-circle automated diffractometer. The possible relationships between the various morphological types of whewellite stones and their structural characteristics were examined at the mesoscopic scale by the use of scanning electron microscopy and at the nanometric scale by powder neutron diffraction. All types of whewellite stones displayed a similar structure at the nanometric scale. However, significant differences were found at the mesoscopic scale. In particular, the crystallites in kidney stones resulting from a genetic hyperoxaluria exhibited a peculiar structure. There was a close relationship between stone morphology and crystallite organization at the mesoscopic level and the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy. [source]


    Breeding of Anopheles mosquitoes in irrigated areas of South Punjab, Pakistan

    Abstract. As part of investigations on potential linkages between irrigation and malaria transmission, all surface water bodies in and around three villages along an irrigation distributary in South Punjab, Pakistan, were surveyed for anopheline mosquito larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) from April 1999 to March 2000. Samples were characterized according to exposure to sunlight, substratum, presence of vegetation, fauna, inorganic matter and physical water condition (clear/turbid/foul). Also water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electroconductivity (EC) and pH of sites were recorded. A total of 37 982 Anopheles larvae of six morphological types were collected from 2992 samples taken from irrigation/agricultural and village/domestic aquatic habitats. Anopheles subpictus Grassi sensu lato was by far the most abundant (74.3%), followed by An. culicifacies Giles s.l. (4.1%), An. stephensi Liston s.l. (2.6%), An. pulcherrimus Theobald (1.8%), An. peditaeniatus Leicester (0.3%) and An. nigerrimus Giles (0.1%). The four most abundant species were significantly associated with waterlogged fields and communal village drinking-water tanks. Habitat characteristics most correlated with occurrence of anophelines were the physical water condition and the absence/presence of fauna, particularly predators. Occurrence and abundance of Anopheles immatures were not significantly correlated with water temperature, DO, EC or pH. Malaria vectors of the Anopheles culicifacies complex occurred at relatively low densities, mainly in irrigated and waterlogged fields. In South Punjab, where rainfall is very low, it should be possible to reduce anopheline breeding through water management, as larvae develop mainly in water bodies that are directly or indirectly related to the extensive canal-irrigation system.     NADPH-diaphorase activity in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus of rats during aging

    Abstract Neurons in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus are key elements in the visual system of rodents since they receive extensive afferent projections from retinal ganglion cells. The NADPH-diaphorase histochemical technique was used to detect differences in neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus (sSC) of young adult (3 months) and aged (24 and 26 months) rats. The orientation of the dendritic processes of NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons, cross-sectional area, and number of neurons per mm2 were analyzed. NADPH-d histochemistry revealed a high number of NADPH-d-positive cells in the stratum zonale and stratum griseum superficiale in adult and aged animals. NADPH-d-positive neurons were classified into the following morphological types: marginal, horizontal, pyriform, narrow-field vertical, wide-field vertical, and stellate. During aging, narrow field vertical and wide field vertical neurons present somatic atrophy and an increase in dendritic processes with dorsoventral orientation, whereas wide field vertical neurons show a decrease in those with lateromedial orientation. Marginal neurons undergo somatic hypertrophy at 26 months when compared with those at 3 months. The remaining types of neurons do not undergo size changes. Finally, the number of NADPH-d-positive neurons per mm2 in the various types of morphology does not significantly change with age. It is suggested to be likely that the aging process in the nitrergic neurons of the sSC does not lead to significant changes in the synthesis of NO from the constitutive NOS isoforms. Microsc. Res.     GHASP: an H, kinematic survey of spiral and irregular galaxies , V. Dark matter distribution in 36 nearby spiral galaxies

    ABSTRACT The results obtained from a study of the mass distribution of 36 spiral galaxies are presented. The galaxies were observed using Fabry,Perot interferometry as part of the GHASP survey. The main aim of obtaining high-resolution H, 2D velocity fields is to define more accurately the rising part of the rotation curves which should allow to better constrain the parameters of the mass distribution. The H, velocities were combined with low resolution H i data from the literature, when available. Combining the kinematical data with photometric data, mass models were derived from these rotation curves using two different functional forms for the halo: an isothermal sphere (ISO) and a Navarro,Frenk,White (NFW) profile. For the galaxies already modelled by other authors, the results tend to agree. Our results point at the existence of a constant density core in the centre of the dark matter haloes rather than a cuspy core, whatever the type of the galaxy from Sab to Im. This extends to all types the result already obtained by other authors studying dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies but would necessitate a larger sample of galaxies to conclude more strongly. Whatever model is used (ISO or NFW), small core radius haloes have higher central densities, again for all morphological types. We confirm different halo scaling laws, such as the correlations between the core radius and the central density of the halo with the absolute magnitude of a galaxy: low-luminosity galaxies have small core radius and high central density. We find that the product of the central density with the core radius of the dark matter halo is nearly constant, whatever the model and whatever the absolute magnitude of the galaxy. This suggests that the halo surface density is independent from the galaxy type. [source]


    Cosmic evolution of metal densities: the enrichment of the intergalactic medium

    ABSTRACT By means of chemo-photometric models for galaxies of different morphological types, we have carried out a detailed study of the history of element production by spheroidal and dwarf irregular galaxies. Spheroidal galaxies suffer a strong and intense star formation episode at early times. In dwarf irregulars, the star formation rate (SFR) proceeds at a low regime but continuously. Both galactic types enrich the intergalactic medium (IGM) with metals by means of galactic winds. We have assumed that the galaxy number density is fixed and normalized to the value of the optical luminosity function observed in the local Universe. Our models allow us to investigate in detail how the metal fractions locked up in stars in spheroids and dwarf irregulars, those present in the interstellar medium (ISM) and those ejected into the IGM have changed with cosmic time. By relaxing the instantaneous recycling approximation and taking into account stellar lifetimes, for the first time we have studied the evolution of the chemical abundance ratios in the IGM and compared our predictions with a set of observations by various authors. Our results indicate that the bulk of the IGM enrichment is due to spheroids, with dwarf irregular galaxies playing a negligible role. Our predictions grossly account for the [O/H] observed in the IGM at high redshift, but overestimate the [C/H]. Furthermore, it appears hard to reproduce the abundance ratios observed in the high-redshift IGM. Some possible explanations are discussed in the text. This is the first attempt to study the abundance ratios in the IGM by means of detailed chemical evolution models which take into account the stellar lifetimes. Numerical simulations adopting our chemical evolution prescriptions could be useful to improve our understanding of the IGM chemical enrichment. [source]


    Constraining the star formation histories of spiral bulges

    Stellar populations in spiral bulges are investigated using the Lick system of spectral indices. Long-slit spectroscopic observations of line strengths and kinematics made along the minor axes of four spiral bulges are reported. Comparisons are made between central line strengths in spiral bulges and those in other morphological types [elliptical, spheroidal (Sph) and S0]. The bulges investigated are found to have central line strengths comparable to those of single stellar populations of approximately solar abundance or above. Negative radial gradients are observed in line strengths, similar to those exhibited by elliptical galaxies. The bulge data are also consistent with correlations between Mg2, Mg2 gradient and central velocity dispersion observed in elliptical galaxies. In contrast to elliptical galaxies, central line strengths lie within the loci defining the range of ,Fe, and Mg2 achieved by Worthey's solar abundance ratio, single stellar populations (SSPs). The implication of solar abundance ratios indicates significant differences in the star formation histories of spiral bulges and elliptical galaxies. A ,single zone with infall' model of galactic chemical evolution, using Worthey's SSPs, is used to constrain the possible star formation histories of our sample. We show that the ,Fe,, Mg2 and H, line strengths observed in these bulges cannot be reproduced using primordial collapse models of formation but can be reproduced by models with extended infall of gas and star formation (2,17 Gyr) in the region modelled. One galaxy (NGC 5689) shows a central population with a luminosity-weighted average age of ,5 Gyr, supporting the idea of extended star formation. Kinematic substructure, possibly associated with a central spike in metallicity, is observed at the centre of the Sa galaxy NGC 3623. [source]


    On the evolution of the Fe abundance and of the Type Ia supernova rate in clusters of galaxies

    ABSTRACT The study of the Fe abundance in the intracluster medium (ICM) provides strong constraints on the integrated star formation history and supernova rate of the cluster galaxies, as well as on the ICM enrichment mechanisms. In this Letter, using chemical evolution models for galaxies of different morphological types, we study the evolution of the Fe content of clusters of galaxies. We assume that the ICM Fe enrichment occurs by means of galactic winds arising from elliptical galaxies and from gas stripped from the progenitors of S0 galaxies via external mechanisms, due to the interaction of the interstellar medium with the ICM. The Fe-rich gas ejected by ellipticals accounts for the XFe,ICM values observed at z > 0.5, whereas the gas stripped from the progenitors of the S0 galaxies accounts for the increase of XFe,ICM observed at z < 0.5. We test two different scenarios for Type Ia supernova (SN) progenitors and we model the Type Ia SN rate observed in clusters, finding a good agreement between our predictions and the available observations.     Microsatellite instability of papillary subtype of human gastric adenocarcinoma and hMLH1 promoter hypermethylation in the surrounding mucosa

    Gastric cancer has striking heterogeneity in histological pattern, cellular phenotype, genotype, biomarkers, and biological behavior. We focused on the specific morphological papillary phenotype of gastric adenocarcinoma and attempted to identify its distinct molecular characteristics. In our comparative study, early stage papillary (papillary-dominant) gastric cancer showed a significantly higher and more widespread high-frequency microsatellite instability (MSI-H) than other morphological types. Analysis of mutations in a panel of five putative microsatellite instability (MSI)-associated genes in the MSI-H cases revealed that papillary or papillary-dominant cancer displays a unique profile of mutations compared to profiles previously reported in gastric cancer. Immunohistochemical staining and methylation analysis revealed that silencing of hMLH1 by methylation in its promoter region was responsible for the failure of mismatch repair in papillary-type gastric cancer, whereas aberrant promoter methylation of hMLH1 was not found in any cases without the unique mutator phenotype. Promoter hypermethylation of the hMLH1 genes was found to a lesser degree in the adjacent non-tumor mucosa in four of the 10 cases with tumor having the mutator phenotype. Microsatellite instability itself could not be detected in the adjacent non-tumor mucosa. Inactivation of hMLH1 expression by promoter hypermethylation may be an early event in carcinogenesis of this type of gastric cancer, preceding the development of the clear MSI phenotype of papillary carcinoma.     Abstract Five different morphological types of Maytenus ilicifolia of the same age and harvested under the same conditions showed distinct accumulations of some friedo-nor -oleananes. A rapid, sensitive and reliable reverse-phase HPLC method (employing an external standard) was used for the determination of the cytotoxic triterpenoids, 20,-hydroxymaytenin, 22,-hydroxymaytenin, maytenin, celastrol and pristimerin in each of the five types.     Abstract Radiation of adventive, sexually reproducing organisms into a new environment has been well documented, but less is understood about the patterns and processes of geographical radiation in adventive species with uniparental reproduction (parthenogenesis or apomixis), usually associated with ,frozen' variation within maternal lineages. In this study we have used Pilosella officinarum to test the hypothesis that sexual reproduction becomes important in the radiation of adventive facultatively apomictic species. Within its native Europe P. officinarum is an extremely variable species, with eight subspecies and a range of ploidy levels. Pentaploids are always apomictic. However, early chromosome analyses of New Zealand adventive populations, carried out during the 1980s, discovered only pentaploid, apomictic clones. Similar observations were made in an early 1990s study of the same sites. Since then, a range of ploidy levels, including aneuploids, and a plethora of morphological variation, has been recorded. In this paper, we use a combination of image analysis and chromosome counts to show that sexual reproduction has become an important avenue for adaptive radiation in New Zealand populations of P. officinarum. Current populations probably comprise complex among-subspecies hybrids, and possibly among-species hybrids, which are at least partially capable of sexual reproduction and various forms of back-crossing. Somatic mutation may also play an important role in creating morphological variation. DNA fingerprinting did not contribute to this study because this technique failed to distinguish between morphological types observed in the field. [source]

    Scanning electron microscopic micrograph of the connective tissue core of fungiform papillae distributed in the dorsal surface of the tongue in the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius amphibius). There are various kinds of lingual papillae distributed on the dorsal surface of the tongue among mammal species. It has been revealed that there were morphological differences found on each lingual papilla; filiform, fungiform, conical, foliate, and vallate papillae depend on the mammalian species, especially on the connective tissue cores beneath the epithelial surface. The fungiform connective tissue core of hippopotamus exhibited are quite similar to those found in the other artiodactyls; however, it lacked other typical morphological types of the lingual papillae found on the artiodactyl species. The unique mosaic-like morphological characteristics of the hippopotamus' lingual papillae may represent the unique evolutional or dietary background of this species. Four of these distribute their dendrites in the inner plexiform layer (image forming layer) and project in a retinotopic manner to all areas of the tectum. The posterior part of the retina has the highest density of ganglion cells and projects to the rostral part of the tectum, in which the visual field in front of the lamprey will be represented. From this area both orienting and evasive behaviors can be elicited. In contrast, pretectum receives input from two ganglion cells types that send their dendrites only to the outer plexiform layer or the outer limiting membrane and therefore may directly contact photoreceptors, and transmit information without additional delay to pretectum, which may be particularly important for visual escape responses. One of these two types, the bipolar ganglion cell, is only found in a small patch of retina just ventral of the optic nerve.     Morphology, characterization, and distribution of retinal photoreceptors in the Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri (Krefft, 1870)

    Abstract The Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri (Dipnoi) is an ancient fish that has a unique phylogenetic relationship among the basal Sarcopterygii. Here we examine the ultrastructure, histochemistry, and distribution of the retinal photoreceptors using a combination of light and electron microscopy in order to determine the characteristics of the photoreceptor layer in this living fossil. Similar proportions of rods (53%) and cones (47%) reveal that N. forsteri optimizes both scotopic and photopic sensitivity according to its visual demands. Scotopic sensitivity is optimized by a tapetum lucidum and extremely large rods (18.62 ± 2.68 ,m ellipsoid diameter). Photopic sensitivity is optimized with a theoretical spatial resolving power of 3.28 ± 0.66 cycles degree,1, which is based on the spacing of at least three different cone types: a red cone containing a red oil droplet, a yellow cone containing a yellow ellipsoidal pigment, and a colorless cone containing multiple clear oil droplets. Topographic analysis reveals a heterogeneous distribution of all photoreceptor types, with peak cone densities predominantly found in temporal retina (6,020 rods mm,2, 4,670 red cones mm,2, 900 yellow cones mm,2, and 320 colorless cones mm,2), but ontogenetic changes in distribution are revealed. Spatial resolving power and the diameter of all photoreceptor types (except yellow cones) increases linearly with growth. The presence of at least three morphological types of cones provides the potential for color vision, which could play a role in the clearer waters of its freshwater environment. J. Comp.     Glycinergic input of widefield, displaced amacrine cells of the mouse retina

    Glycine receptors (GlyRs) of displaced amacrine cells of the mouse retina were analysed using whole cell recordings and immunocytochemical staining with subunit-specific antibodies. During the recordings the cells were filled with a fluorescent tracer and 11 different morphological types could be identified. The studies were performed in wild-type mice and in mutant mice deficient in the GlyR,1 (Glra1spd-ot, ,oscillator' mouse), the GlyR,2 (Glra2,/,) and the GlyR,3 subunit (Glra3,/,). Based on their responses to the application of exogenous glycine in the retinas of wild-type and mutant mice, the cells were grouped into three major classes: group I cells (comprising the morphological types MA-S5, MA-S1, MA-S1/S5, A17, PA-S1, PA-S5 and WA-S1), group II cells (comprising the morphological types PA-S4, WA-S3 and WA-multi) and ON-starburst cells. For further analysis, spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) were measured both in wild-type and mutant mouse retinas. Glycinergic sIPSCs and glycine induced currents of group I cells remained unaltered across wild-type and the three mutant mice (mean decay time constant of sIPSCs, ,,25 ms). Group II cells showed glycinergic sIPSCs and glycine induced currents in wild-type, Glra1spd-ot and Glra3,/, mice (,,25 ms); however, glycinergic currents were absent in group II cells of Glra2,/, mice. Glycine induced currents and sIPSCs recorded from ON-starburst amacrine cells did not differ significantly between wild-type and the mutant mouse retinas (,,50,70 ms). We propose that GlyRs of group II cells are dominated by the ,2 subunit; GlyRs of ON-starburst amacrine cells appear to be dominated by the ,4 subunit. [source]


    Anatomical and Descriptive Study of the Radial Extensor Muscle (M. Extensor Carpi Radialis)

    Summary The M. extensores carpi radiales have been studied in detail in humans. The aim of this study was to carry out a comparative anatomical study of these muscles using four species , rabbit, cat, dog and sheep , and to propose a ,systematization' in a few standard models according to the morphological variations seen. In these species, there is marked morphological evolution, with two muscles in humans, one in sheep and a more or less distinct division of the muscle in the rabbit, cat and dog. Examination of the vascularization and nerve supply enables us to determine degrees of division in species with similar muscle morphology. Thus we were able to distinguish three morphological types which allow us to infer the morphological evolution of the M. extensores carpi radiales and to estimate the point at which one muscle became two. However, there is a strong chance that some process of convergence may have occurred, and in pentadactyl species many elements represent the plesiomorphis and are therefore of little use in constructing a classification on the basis of evolution.     HS08 CONGENITAL HAND: THE DEFORMITY-DEFICIENCY INDEX

    Congenital hand is a complex and vast subject therefore classification is very necessary for the purpose of teaching, communication and guide treatment. The first comprehensive and yet user friendly classification was proposed by Swanson et al. in 1976. This classification based on etiopathogenic is popularly known as the ,IFSSH 7 groups classification'. (I) Failure of formation: transverse or longitudinal (II) Failure of differentiation (III) Polydactyly (IV) Overgrowth (V) Undergrowth (VI) Amniotic band syndrome (VII) Generalized skeletal syndromes. However this classification was found not able to satisfactorily classify 20,30% of cases. Other classifications based on genetic defects, teratogenic sequence and syndromics were being introduced previously and continue to be used parallel with the IFSSH classification. Furthermore the classification continue to be besieged by multiple morphological types of deformity in a same hand. Ogino introduced the JSSH expanded classification to address some of the deficiencies of the IFSSH classification. For a beginner in treating congenital hand, it is indeed daunting, as the variations in morphology, the degree of severity and functional deficit even in the same diagnosis can be very different. It is usual to find further sub classifications. For the purpose of guiding treatment, I propose the concept of deformity/ deficiency index. Group I) The imbalance/ small in size II) Extra digits III) Mal positioned/ Mal-aligned IV) Poor/ No function V) Total absent. The residual functional decreases from group I to V.     Mixed stream channel morphologies: implications for fish community diversity

    Abstract 1.Stream classification systems are widely used in stream management and restoration. Whereas the principal morphological types of these classification systems are increasingly recognized for their ecological connections, the roles of intermediate and mixed morphologies are still poorly understood, yet may be biologically significant. 2.Twenty-five stream reaches in north-western Vermont were classified by channel morphology to determine whether fish community diversity differed among pool-riffle, mixed (i.e. pool-riffle/cascade, pool-riffle/other) and forced pool-riffle stream morphological groups. Stream reach surveys included cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal profiles, bed substrate characterization, and fish surveys. 3.Three fish community diversity measures were calculated: (1) species richness (S); (2) Shannon,Weaver Index (H,); and (3) Simpson's Index (1/D). Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) followed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to explore potential differences in fish diversity among stream morphological groups. Fish diversity was significantly different for all three community diversity measures (P,0.05), with pool-riffle/cascade morphology consistently exhibiting the greatest fish diversity and forced pool-riffle the lowest. 4.These results suggest that fish community diversity is significantly associated with distinct channel morphologies. Generally, pool-riffle/cascade and pool-riffle/other stream morphological groups supported habitats that fostered greater species diversity than more homogeneous and uniform pool-riffle reaches. The observed patterns of diversity are likely to be the result of habitat patches created by variations in flow and other physical characteristics in reaches of mixed morphologies. 5.These results support fish sampling schemes that incorporate morphological heterogeneity, such as proportional-distance designation. Sampling strategies that focus on homogeneous reaches may underestimate diversity, and misrepresent stream condition when fish community data are used in indices of biological integrity (IBIs).     The decline of Magan and the rise of Dilmun: Umm an-Nar ceramics from the burial mounds of Bahrain, c.2250,2000 BC

    This article outlines some general aspects of the Magan and Dilmun trade and goes on to examine the Umm an-Nar pottery discovered in the tombs of the Early Dilmun burial mounds of Bahrain. These ceramics are of particular interest because they indirectly testify to Dilmun's contact with Magan in the late third millennium. In this article, thirty vessels of seven morphological types are singled out. By comparison with the material published from the Oman peninsula the Bahrain collection is tentatively dated to c.2250,2000 BC. The location of the Umm an-Nar pottery within the distribution of burial mounds reveals that its import was strongly associated with the scattered mounds of Early Type. It is demonstrated that the frequency of Umm an-Nar pottery declined just as the ten compact cemeteries emerged c.2050 BC. The observed patterns are seen as a response to the decline of Magan and the rise of Dilmun. [source]


    Ordered and chaotic spiral arms

    Abstract The stellar flow at the arms of spiral galaxies is qualitatively different among different morphological types. The stars that reinforce the spiral arms can be either participating in an ordered or in a chaotic flow. Ordered flows are associated with normal (non-barred) spiral galaxies. Typically they are described with precessing ellipses corresponding to stable periodic orbits at successive energies (Jacobi constants). On the contrary, the spiral arms in barred-spiral systems may be supported by stars in chaotic motion. The trajectories of these stars are associated with the invariant manifolds of the unstable Lagrangian points (L1,2). Response and orbital models indicate that this kind of spirals either stop at an azimuth smaller than , /2, or present large gaps at about this angle. Chaotic spirals appear in strong bars having (L1,2) close to the ends of the bar. The arms of barred-spiral systems with corotation away from the end of the bar can be either as in the case of normal spirals, or supported by banana-like orbits surrounding the stable Lagrangian points (L4,5).     Seedcoat micromorphology of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) from China

    Seeds of 38 species of Impatiens mostly from south-western China were observed by scanning electron microscopy. High diversity was found in seedcoat micromorphology. Based on the structure and ornamentation of epidermal cells of the seedcoat, particularly the pattern of the arrangement of the cells and the degree of elevation of the anticlinal cell walls, four morphological types can be distinguished, viz, laevigate, granulate, reticulate and protrusive. The laevigate type and granulate type are unique, each occurring in only one species. The other two types are common and can be further divided into subdivisions according to the shape of the epidermal ornamentation of the seedcoat. Descriptions of seed size, shape and seedcoat types are summarized for the genus.     Seed morphology of Linaria species from eastern Spain: identification of species and taxonomic implications

    Seed morphology of 15 taxa of Linaria from eastern Spain has been studied using stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy. Four different morphological types are described according to features of the seed-coat surface. The type that includes winged seeded taxa is divided into three subtypes. Seed morphology of each type and subtype is described, compared, illustrated and discussed according to its taxonomic and biological implications.
