Is the axilla a distinct skin phenotype?

The axillary skin is cosmetically important with millions of consumers daily applying antiperspirant/deodorant products. Despite this, we know virtually nothing about axillary skin or how antiperspirant use impacts upon it. To characterize axillary stratum corneum and determine whether this is a unique skin type, we have evaluated a range of skin parameters, comparing these with the volar forearm. Trans-epidermal water loss and corneosurfametry revealed a reduced barrier function in the axilla. However, application of antiperspirant had no effect upon these barrier properties. High performance thin layer chromatography analysis of stratum corneum lipids demonstrated statistically elevated levels of fatty acids, ceramide and particularly cholesterol in the axilla. This modification of barrier lipid ratios appeared to result in a more ordered lipid lamellae phase behaviour, as determined by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, with transition phase changes occurring at higher temperatures. Morphological differences were also seen in the cells of the axillary stratum corneum. Microscopic evaluation of axillary-cornified envelopes revealed them to be smaller, indicative of a shorter stratum corneum turnover. However, there appeared to be no significant difference corneocyte maturation. ,Skin dryness' squamometry measurements indicated that the axillary stratum corneum retained desquamated material on its surface more than on the forearm. This correlated with decreased levels of the desquamatory stratum corneum chymotryptic enzyme in the surface layers of the skin. These results indicate that the axilla has a distinct phenotype. Genetic and morphometric differentiation among island populations of two Norops lizards (Reptilia: Sauria: Polychrotidae) on independently colonized islands of the Islas de Bahia (Honduras)

Abstract Aim, Anole lizards (Reptilia: Sauria: Polychrotidae) display remarkable morphological and genetic differentiation between island populations. Morphological differences between islands are probably due to both adaptive (e.g. differential resource exploitation and intra- or interspecific competition) and non-adaptive differentiation in allopatry. Anoles are well known for their extreme diversity and rapid adaptive speciation on islands. The main aim of this study was to use tests of morphological and genetic differentiation to investigate the population structure and colonization history of islands of the Islas de Bahia, off the coast of Honduras. Location, Five populations of Norops bicaorum and Norops lemurinus were sampled, four from islands of the Islas de Bahia and one from the mainland of Honduras. Methods, Body size and weight differentiation were measured in order to test for significant differences between sexes and populations. In addition, individuals were genotyped using the amplified fragment length polymorphism technique. Bayesian model-based and assignment/exclusion methods were used to study genetic differentiation between island and mainland populations and to test colonization hypotheses. Results, Assignment tests suggested migration from the mainland to the Cayos Cochinos, and from there independently to both Utila and Roatán, whereas migration between Utila and Roatán was lacking. Migration from the mainland to Utila was inferred, but was much less frequent. Morphologically, individuals from Utila appeared to be significantly different in comparison with all other localities. Significant differentiation between males of Roatán and the mainland was found in body size, whereas no significant difference was detected between the mainland and the Cayos Cochinos. Main conclusions, Significant genetic and morphological differentiation was found among populations. A stepping-stone model for colonization, in combination with an independent migration to Utila and Roatán, was suggested by assignment tests and was compatible with the observed morphological differentiation. Morphological differences between two ecologically similar sympatric fishes

Morphological differentiation and microhabitat segregation of two ecologically similar populations of pelagic planktivorous fishes, Coregonus albula and the smaller Coregonus fontanae, were studied in Lake Stechlin (northern Germany). Both populations performed diel vertical migrations, although C. fontanae was always situated in deeper pelagic water than C. albula both during day and night. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics revealed that sympatric C. albula and C. fontanae differ in external morphology, with main differences found in head length and eye position, as well as in length and width of the caudal peduncle. Moreover, while C. albula has a similar morphology over all sizes, the shape of C. fontanae changes with size. Accordingly, the morphology of the two is most different at smaller size. Although the morphological differences may reflect adaptations to the slightly differing microhabitats of the two populations, there is no conclusive evidence that this correspondence between ecology and morphology is the main mechanism behind the coexistence of the closely related coregonids in Lake Stechlin. Postembryonic development of the wing imaginal discs in the female wingless bagworm moth Eumeta variegata (Lepidoptera, Psychidae)

Abstract The process of wing disc development and degeneration in the bagworm moth Eumeta variegata was investigated histologically. Morphological differences between two sexes first appear in the penultimate (eighth) larval instar. In the male, wing discs proliferate rapidly in the penultimate larval instar and continue proliferating; a conspicuous peripodial epithelium forms in the last (ninth) larval instar. The hemopoietic organs break down in this stage and disappear completely by the prepupal stage. In the female, in contrast, the wing discs remain as in the previous (seventh) instar, without proliferation of cells inside. No peripodial epithelium forms in the penultimate instar or later. Hemopoietic organs are still attached to the wing discs in the last larval instar and the entire wing discs transform into a plain, thick epidermis in the prepupal period. Morphology of the immature stages and notes on biology of Philonthus nigrita (Gravenhorst, 1806) (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) a stenotopic species inhabiting Sphagnum peatbogs

Abstract The larvae (L1,3) of Philonthus nigrita (Gravenhorst, 1806) is described for the first time, with the illustrations of their structural features provided. The poorly known morphology of egg and pupa are supplemented by the new data. Morphological differences between the first (L1) and next (L2 and L3) larval instars covers: the chaetotaxy of head, profemur, protibia, tarsungulus, abdominal tergites, sternites and urogomphi; the structure of antenna, maxillae and urogomphi; the microstructure of the abdominal tergites, proportions, body colour and habitus. Diagnostic characters of egg and larva of Ph. nigrita species are listed. Some data on its distribution, environmental requirements and biology in the laboratory conditions are also provided. The combination of characters that distinguishes the larva (L3) of Ph. nigrita from the some other known larvae of the Central European Philonthus and Bisnius is presented. Morphological differences in the temporomandibular joints in asymmetrical prognathism patients

Thirty-five patients undergoing orthognathic surgery without signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder were assigned to three groups (right deviation, n = 11; left deviation, n = 14; and non-deviation; n = 10) based on anteroposterior cephalometric analysis. Outcome Measure ,, Positional and morphological differences of the TMJs were evaluated using a total of 70 bilateral sagittal TMJ magnetic resonance images. Results ,, In both the right and left deviation groups, the TMJ on the deviated side showed a significantly steeper eminence than that on the non-deviated side (p < 0.05). The anterior joint space was narrower on the deviated side than on the non-deviated side whereas the posterior joint space did not differ markedly, indicating an anterior position of the condyle in the glenoid fossa of the TMJ on the deviated side. Disk displacement comparisons revealed no significant differences between left and right sides in the symmetry or asymmetry group. Conclusion ,, Asymmetrical prognathism patients exhibit significant morphological differences between the right and left TMJs concerning the slope of the articular eminence, which correspond to facial asymmetry. Geometric morphometric study of population variation in indigenous southern African crania

Much of our understanding of population variation in southern Africa is derived from traditional morphometric research. In the search for new perspectives, this paper reports on new geometric morphometric data examining cranial variation in 12 modern human populations from southern Africa. In total, 298 male Bantu-speaking individuals were studied. In addition, a small Khoisan (Khoikhoi and San) series was also examined. The purpose of this study was to investigate Khoisan-Bantu morphological similarities and differences, and to examine variation within both the Bantu-speaking and Khoisan populations. The three-dimensional coordinates of 96 landmarks were analyzed, using the shape-analysis software morphologika. Interpopulation variation was examined by calculating Procrustes distances between groups; a cluster analysis was then used to summarize phenetic relationships. A principal components analysis explored the relationships between populations; shape differences were visualized and explored using three-dimensional rendered models, and further interpreted using thin-plate splines. Morphological differences are present within and between the crania of Bantu-speaking and Khoisan individuals. The Khoisan demonstrate features (e.g., a pentagonoid vault, more rounded forehead contour, and a small and less prognathic face) that clearly distinguish them from Bantu-speaking populations. Although southern African Bantu-speaking populations are clearly closely related, they show population-specific features (e.g., the crania of more southerly populations (Xhosa, Southern Sotho, and Zulu) are characteristically more brachycephalic and less prognathic). The species delimitation problem applied to the Agabus bipustulatus complex (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) in north Scandinavia

Agabus bipustulatus (Linnaeus) is one of the most common aquatic beetles in Europe. Two species have been traditionally recognized within the Palaearctic Agabus bipustulatus complex (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) in Scandinavia: a lowland form A. bipustulatus and a high-altitude form A. solieri Aube. The specific status of solieri has been debated for more than a century but no quantitative investigation has been made to evaluate the status of this taxon. In this study we show that there is no clear-cut delimitation between the two forms, either morphological or genetic, across an altitudinal gradient in north Scandinavia. Morphological differences between 22 populations were analysed separately for each sex with both thin-plate splines relative warp analysis and ,classical-length' morphometries. Genetic variation at five polymorphic enzyme loci was analysed among seven populations. The morphological studies showed gradual variation correlated with altitude, in particular in the character that is traditionally used to separate solieri and bipustulatus, and in both the beetles' morphometric size and the lateral width of the metasternal plate, which is connected to flight capacity. The genetic study indicates that the a-Gpdh enzyme locus, which is involved in the transfer of energy to the flight muscles, is evidently subject to directional selection. Only minor population differences were observed without this system. Subdivision was found in some populations and was probably caused by migration from outside or within the local population. The overall conclusion is that there is no clear-cut species delimitation between A. bipustulatus and A. solieri in north Scandinavia. This indicates that A. solieri is a cold-adapted altitudinal form of the variable A. bipustulatus; additional support for this is the finding of solieri,look alikes' in cold springs in areas normally inhabited by bipustulatus. Variation in fiber number of a male-specific muscle between Drosophila species: a genetic and developmental analysis

SUMMARY We characterize a newly discovered morphological difference between species of the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup. The muscle of Lawrence (MOL) contains about four to five fibers in D. melanogaster and Drosophila simulans and six to seven fibers in Drosophila mauritiana and Drosophila sechellia. The same number of nuclei per fiber is present in these species but their total number of MOL nuclei differs. This suggests that the number of muscle precursor cells has changed during evolution. Our comparison of MOL development indicates that the species difference appears during metamorphosis. We mapped the quantitative trait loci responsible for the change in muscle fiber number between D. sechellia and D. simulans to two genomic regions on chromosome 2. Our data eliminate the possibility of evolving mutations in the fruitless gene and suggest that a change in the twist might be partly responsible for this evolutionary change. [source]


Intrafloral differentiation of stamens in heterantherous flowers

Abstract Flowers that have heteromorphic stamens (heterantherous flowers) have intrigued many researchers ever since the phenomenon was discovered in the 19th century. The morphological differentiation in androecia has been suggested as a reflection of "labor division" in pollination in which one type of stamens attracts pollinators and satisfies their demand for pollen as food and the other satisfies the plant's need for safe gamete dispersal. The extent and patterns of stamen differentiation differ notably among taxa with heterantherous flowers. Seven species with heteromorphic stamens in three genera were sampled from Leguminosae and Melastomataceae, and the morphological difference of androecia, pollen content, pollen histochemistry and viability, pollen micro-morphology, as well as the main pollinators were examined and compared. Pollen number differs significantly between stamen sets of the same flower in most species investigated, and a correlation of pollen number and anther size was substantiated. Higher pollen viabilities were found in the long (pollinating) stamens of Senna alata (L.) Roxb. and S. bicapsularis (L.) Roxb. Dimorphic pollen exine ornamentation is reported here for the first time in Fordiophyton faberi Stapf. The height of stigma and anther tips of the long stamens in natural conditions was proved to be highly correlated, supporting the hypothesis that they contact similar areas of the pollinator's body. Atomic Force Microscopy Characterization and Interpretation of Thin-Film Poly(butylene adipate) Spherulites with Ring Bands

Abstract Atomic force microscopy characterization has been conducted to reveal the morphological difference between single-ring bands in poly(butylene adipate) (PBA). Furthermore, morphological features of the ring-less Maltese-cross spherulites are compared to the ring-band spherulites. Periodic changes in height seem to be common for either the ring-band or ring-less (Maltese-cross) crystal domains; however, the steepness in height change is greater for the ring-band crystal, while height change in the ring-less crystal exhibits a terrace-like layer pattern. In the ring-band crystal region, the lamellar stalks, which taper off to pointed needle-like stalks, monotonously protrude out of the layers of softer materials, with no signs of twisting, bending, or turning. In contrast, all lamellae in the ring-less (Maltese-cross) crystal region are uniform platelets arranged like flower petals in a layered pattern. [source]


A study of candidate marine target impact craters in Arabia Terra, Mars

Arabia Terra is a region on Mars that straddles the crustal dichotomy, and several proposed shorelines are located in the area. Shallow marine impact craters on Mars likely would exhibit features like those on Earth, including characteristic morphological features that are distinctly different from that of craters formed on land. Common attributes of terrestrial marine impact craters include features of wet mass movement such as gravity slumps and debris flows; radial gullies leading into the crater depression; resurge deposits and blocks of dislocated materials; crater rim collapse or breaching of the crater wall; a central peak terrace or peak ring terrace; and subdued topography (an indicator of both age and possible flood inundation immediately following impact). In this article, these features have been used to evaluate craters on Mars as to a possible marine origin. This study used a simple quantification system to approximately judge and rank shallow marine impact crater candidates based on features observed in terrestrial analogs. Based on the quantification system, 77 potential shallow marine impact craters were found within an area bounded by 20°N and 40°N as well as 20°W and 20°E. Nine exemplary candidates were ranked with total scores of 70% or more. In a second, smaller study area, impact craters of approximately similar size and age were evaluated as a comparison and average total scores are 35%, indicating that there is some morphological difference between craters inside and outside the proposed shorelines. Results of this type of study are useful in helping to develop a general means of classification and characterization of potential marine craters. [source]


The promise of geometric morphometrics

Abstract Nontraditional or geometric morphometric methods have found wide application in the biological sciences, especially in anthropology, a field with a strong history of measurement of biological form. Controversy has arisen over which method is the "best" for quantifying the morphological difference between forms and for making proper statistical statements about the detected differences. This paper explains that many of these arguments are superfluous to the real issues that need to be understood by those wishing to apply morphometric methods to biological data. Validity, the ability of a method to find the correct answer, is rarely discussed and often ignored. We explain why demonstration of validity is a necessary step in the evaluation of methods used in morphometrics. Focusing specifically on landmark data, we discuss the concepts of size and shape, and reiterate that since no unique definition of size exists, shape can only be recognized with reference to a chosen surrogate for size. We explain why only a limited class of information related to the morphology of an object can be known when landmark data are used. This observation has genuine consequences, as certain morphometric methods are based on models that require specific assumptions, some of which exceed what can be known from landmark data. We show that orientation of an object with reference to other objects in a sample can never be known, because this information is not included in landmark data. Consequently, a descriptor of form difference that contains information on orientation is flawed because that information does not arise from evidence within the data, but instead is a product of a chosen orientation scheme. To illustrate these points, we apply superimposition, deformation, and linear distance-based morphometric methods to the analysis of a simulated data set for which the true differences are known. This analysis demonstrates the relative efficacy of various methods to reveal the true difference between forms. Our discussion is intended to be fair, but it will be obvious to the reader that we favor a particular approach. Our bias comes from the realization that morphometric methods should operate with a definition of form and form difference consistent with the limited class of information that can be known from landmark data. New Insight on the Anatomy and Architecture of the Avian Neurocranium

Abstract This study aims to disentangle the main features of the avian neurocranium at high taxonomic scales using geometric morphometric tools. When surveying the variation across 60% of avian orders (sampled among 72 individuals), our results verify that the central nervous system has an important influence upon the architecture of the avian neurocranium, as in other very encephalized vertebrates such as mammals. When the avian brain expands relative to the cranial base it causes more "reptilian-like" neurocranial configurations to shape into rounder ones. This rounder appearance is achieved because the cranial base becomes relatively shorter and turns its flexure from concave to convex, at the same time forcing the foramen magnum to reorient ventrally instead of caudally. However, our analyses have also revealed that an important morphological difference between birds resides between the occiput and the cranial roof. This variation was unexpected since it had not been reported thus far, and entertains two plausible interpretations. Although it could be due to a trade-off between the relative sizes of the supraoccipital and the parietal bones, the presence of an additional bone (the intra- or post-parietal) between the latter two bones could also explain the variation congruently. This descriptive insight stresses the need for further developmental studies focused in understanding the evolutionary disparity of the avian neurocranium. Differentiation among disjunct populations of agamospermous species of Hieracium section Cernua (Asteraceae) in Central European subalpine habitats

A morphological survey and assessment of genetic diversity using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were applied to study the variability of two agamospermous species of Hieracium section Cernua R. Uechtr. characterized by disjunct, subalpine distributions: H. silesiacum (Western Carpathians and Eastern Sudetes) and H. vierhapperi (Western Carpathians and Eastern Alps). Contrasting patterns were revealed. In H. silesiacum, no genetic or morphological differences were found between its remote populations from the Sudetes and the Tatry mountains, suggesting a recent dispersal. In contrast, distinct morphological differentiation of population in the Nízke Tatry mountains was confirmed by high genetic differentiation; the analysis indicated independent origin of this population and gave grounds for taxonomic separation and description of a new species, H. austrotatricum. In H. vierhapperi, genetic differentiation and slight morphological difference (colour of achenes) was observed between disjunct populations from the Carpathians and the Alps. The data suggest long-term isolation of these populations resulting in pronounced independent history. High number of markers monomorphic for all populations supports the existing hypothesis of common sexual ancestors from H. section Cernua involved in the origin of these polyploid taxa. Actin and myosin in Gregarina polymorpha

Abstract Actin and two class XIV unconventional myosins have been cloned from Gregarina polymorpha, a large protozoan parasite inhabiting the gut of the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. These proteins were most similar to their homologues expressed in the coccidian and haemosporidian Apicomplexa such as Toxoplasma and Plasmodium despite the significant morphological differences among these parasites. Both actin and G. polymorpha myosin A (GpMyoA), a 92.6-kDa protein characterized by a canonical myosin head domain and short, highly basic tail, localized to both the longitudinally-disposed surface membrane folds (epicytic folds) of the parasite as well as to the subjacent rib-like myonemes that gird the parasite cortex. G. polymorpha myosin B (GpMyoB), a 96.3-kDa myosin, localized exclusively to the epicytic folds of the parasite. Both myosins were tightly associated with the cortical cytoskeleton and were solubilized only with a combination of high salt and detergent. Both GpMyoA and GpMyoB could bind to actin in an ATP-sensitive fashion. The distribution of actin and the unconventional myosins in G. polymorpha was consistent with their proposed participation in both the rapid (1,10 ,m/sec) gliding motility exhibited by the gregarines as well as the myoneme-mediated bending motions that have been observed in these parasites. Effects of hind limb denervation on the development of appendicular ossicles in the Dwarf African Clawed Frog, Hymenochirus boettgeri (Anura: Pipidae)

Abstract Sesamoids and other appendicular ossicles are common in other classes of vertebrates but comparatively rare in amphibians. The pipid frog Hymenochirus boettgeri (Boulenger, G. A. 1899. On Hymenochirus, a new type of aglossal batrachians. , Annals of the Magazine of Natural History Series 7: 122,125) is unusual among anurans in having seven (or more) appendicular ossicles in each hind limb. Sesamoids are often associated with muscles and tendons, and their development is usually regarded as mediated by or correlated with function. This study investigated the effects of paralysis (loss of function) on development of ossicles in the hind limb of Hymenochirus. Complete denervation of the right sciatic nerve was performed at developmental stages 63 and 66, and the animals maintained for a further 6,7 or 12,13 weeks. Specimens were cleared and double stained for cartilage and bone. There were no gross morphological differences between control and sham operated groups. The lunulae were not affected by paralysis, whereas the fabella arose later and/or regressed in some specimens. The distal os sesamoides tarsalia (OST) was shorter in paralysed individuals, and both the distal OST and cartilagines plantares showed delayed maturation. Denervation of the hind limb thus affected the timing of appearance, maintenance and rate of maturation of some sesamoid bones in Hymenochirus, but had no effect on others. [source]


Morphometry and sexual dimorphism of the coastal spotted dolphin, Stenella attenuata graffmani, from Bahía de Banderas, Mexico

Abstract External measurements and size differences between the sexes were examined in the coastal spotted dolphin, Stenella attenuata graffmani, in Bahía de Banderas, on the Mexican Pacific coast. The dolphins were collected by local fishermen and 29 external characteristics were measured by members of the Marine Mammals Laboratory, University of Mexico. The length of each characteristic with respect to total length was analysed through adjustment of the data to a power equation. A stepwise discriminant analysis was applied to the absolute values and to those expressed as proportions to analyse the differences between the sexes. Results indicate that growth in these dolphins is generally negatively allometric, and most of the characteristics measured were, in both absolute and proportional terms, greater in male dolphins than in female dolphins. As found in many species of odontocetes, the discriminant analysis showed that the main differences between the sexes for this coastal subspecies include the relative positions of the umbilicus, the genital aperture and the anus. The morphometric data provided by this study, corresponding to 29 specimens of S. a. graffmani collected in a restricted locality of the Mexican Pacific coast, are particularly interesting to studies documenting latitudinal morphological differences in the coastal spotted dolphin. Population structure and migratory directions of Scandinavian bluethroats Luscinia svecica, a molecular, morphological and stable isotope analysis

Many species of birds show evidence of secondary contact zones and subspeciation in their Scandinavian distribution range, presumably resulting from different post-glacial recolonization routes. We investigated whether this is the case also in the Scandinavian bluethroat Luscinia svecica, a species that has been suggested to consist of two separate populations: one SW-migrating and long-winged (L. s. gaetkei) breeding in southern Norway, and one shorter-winged ESE-migrating (L. s. svecica) in northern Scandinavia. We sampled males at eleven breeding sites from southern Norway to northernmost Sweden. There were no morphological differences or latitudinal trends within the sample, neither were there any genetic differences or latitudinal trends as measured by variation in AFLP and microsatellite markers. Stable isotope ratios of throat feathers moulted on the wintering grounds showed no, or possibly marginal differences between birds from southern Norway and northern Sweden. We also re-measured old museum skins that in previous studies were classified as L. s.gaetkei, and found marginally longer wings in birds from the southern part of the Scandinavian breeding range. The difference, however, was much smaller than proposed in earlier studies. We conclude that there is no evidence of a genetic population structure among Scandinavian bluethroats that would suggest the presence of a zone of secondary contact. Finally we discuss whether the presumed subspecies gaetkei ever existed. [source]


Correlated morphological and colour differences among females of the damselfly Ischnura elegans

Abstract 1.,The female-limited colour polymorphic damselfly Ischnura elegans has proven to be an interesting study organism both as an example of female sexual polymorphism, and in the context of the evolution of colour polymorphism, as a model of speciation processes. 2.,Previous research suggests the existence of correlations between colour morph and other phenotypic traits, and the different female morphs in I. elegans may be pursuing alternative phenotypically integrated strategies. However, previous research on morphological differences in southern Swedish individuals of this species was only carried out on laboratory-raised offspring from a single population, leaving open the question of how widespread such differences are. 3.,The present study therefore analysed multi-generational data from 12 populations, investigating morphological differences between the female morphs in the field, differences in the pattern of phenotypic integration between morphs, and quantified selection on morphological traits. 4.,It was found that consistent morphological differences indeed existed between the morphs across populations, confirming that the previously observed differences were not simply a laboratory artefact. It was also found, somewhat surprisingly, that despite the existence of sexual dimorphism in body size and shape, patterns of phenotypic integration differed most between the morphs and not between the sexes. Finally, linear selection gradients showed that female morphology affected fecundity differently between the morphs. 5.,We discuss the relevance of these results to the male mimicry hypothesis and to the existence of potential ecological differences between the morphs. In the present study we examined morphological differences between young-of-the-year perch from two lake populations with differences in size-specific predation risk. A common garden setup was used to examine the genetic and environmental components of the morphological variation. We found differences in head and jaw length and slight differences in body depth between the wild young-of-the-year perch from Lake Ängersjön and Lake Fisksjön. The differences found between the wild fish from the two lakes were not maintained under common garden rearing. The observed morphological divergence between the wild young-of-the-year perch from Lake Ängersjön and Lake Fisksjön seems to stem mainly from a plastic response to different environmental conditions in the two lakes. It is clear that the morphological traits are not influenced by direct reaction to the size-specific risk of cannibalism, but probably stem from a combination of different environment characteristics, including resource and habitat use, and the density of other piscivores, such as pike. Interpopulation differences in the mandible size of the coastal tiger beetle Lophyridia angulata associated with different sympatric species

Abstract The coastal tiger beetle Lophyridia angulata (Fabricius) co-occurs with one or two tiger beetle species at any one locality (in a sandy beach habitat) along the Japan Sea coast of Honshu, from eastern to southern Kyushu, and on Tanega-shima, an island south of Kyushu, in Japan. Lophyridia angulata displays sexual dimorphism in mandible length (the mandible is longer in females), and shows large interpopulation differences in mandible size. We analyzed variation in mandible length between L. angulata populations associated with three different sympatric species, and examined morphological differences that may have resulted from interaction with these other species. Lophyridia angulata showed a significant size shift towards larger mandibles in a population that co-occurred with Cicindela lewisii, which has a similar mandible length to that of L. angulata, as compared to a neighboring population of L. angulata that co-occurred with another species. This pattern may be interpreted as a type of character displacement associated with food resource competition. Males in L. angulata populations co-occurring with Chaetodera laetescripta showed little variation in mandible length, as compared to other populations. These males may experience some pressure from C. laetescripta and from conspecific females. We found no significant changes in mandible length or in size variation of L. angulata before and 20 years after the extinction of Abroscelis anchoralis at one site historically co-inhabited by both species; that is, we did not detect a character release over the 20 years. Can Morphology Reduce the Cost of Subordination?
This paper studies the magnitude of the behavioural shift, from forage standing to forage hanging, of subordinate great tits (Parus major) in two different social contexts: feeding solitarily vs. feeding with a dominant conspecific. The aim is to test the hypothesis that differences in morphological design provide subordinates with varying abilities to reduce the presumed costs of subordination. We find that different subordinate individuals change the foraging behaviour, occupying a different niche when an intra-specific competitor is present. Morphology linked to sexual dimorphism, specifically body mass, is the factor responsible for the different magnitudes of change. Lighter subordinates can remain longer than heavier ones at the feeding patch without interrupting their foraging. Thereby, the former reduce the costs of being subordinate more than the latter. Among subordinates, females are lighter than males; they also spend more time feeding in the presence of a dominant conspecific than males do. No differences are found between age categories. We find no relationship between tarsus length and individual ecological plasticity. Our results support the idea that the ecological plasticity due to morphological differences is a mechanism that allows subordinate individuals to overcome costs associated with subordination. The morphological development of neurons derived from EGF- and FGF-2-driven human CNS precursors depends on their site of integration in the neonatal rat brain

Abstract Neural precursor cells derived from the developing human brain were expanded in vitro under the influence of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and epidermal growth hormone (EGF), and were then transplanted into different regions of the neonatal rat brain. Four weeks later neurons were seen to have developed from human embryonic precursors, using a human-specific antibody to tau (htau). There were morphological differences between implanted neurons developing in the hippocampus, striatum and neocortex, which were confirmed by cell volume measurements, although no specific neurochemical phenotypes were identified. Htau-positive fibres were seen to project extensively along fibre pathways appropriate for the site of neuronal integration. This study demonstrates that, following cell division in vitro, neurons differentiating from human precursor cell populations retain the ability to respond appropriately to regional determinants present in the neonatal rat brain. This is important for the application of such cells in CNS repair strategies, in particular neural transplantation. [source]


The Effect of the Anode Loading and Method of MEA Fabrication on DMFC Performance

Abstract The influence of the Pt-Ru anode loading and MEA preparation techniques on direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance is studied. Two different anode catalyst layer preparation techniques are employed. One is the direct coating of anode catalyst ink on a membrane to form a catalyst coated membrane, CCManode, and the other is the coating of the ink on the diffusion layers, which generates a catalyst coated substrate, CCSanode. The power density of a combined CCManode/CCScathode MEA is higher than for a CCSanode/CCScathode MEA. The main difference in the performance is observed in the high current density region, where two-phase flow is present and mass transfer processes govern the performance. The CCManode and CCSanode have different macroscopic structures, while showing the same microscopic morphology. Based on their morphological differences, it is expected that the combination of the CCManode and carbon paper provides the more homogeneous removal of CO2 at high currents. The authors suggest that the application of the CCManode with an optimal anode loading improves anode mass transfer, reduces methanol crossover, and enhances the electrochemical reactions. [source]


Myofibroblastic differentiation in malignant fibrous histiocytoma (pleomorphic myofibrosarcoma): a clinicopathological study

Myofibroblastic differentiation in malignant fibrous histiocytoma (pleomorphic myofibrosarcoma): a clinicopathological study Aims:,We compared the clinical and pathological features of pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)-like soft tissue sarcomas with and without myofibroblastic differentiation on electron microscopy. Methods and Results:,Fifty-three soft tissue tumours designated as MFH by light and electron microscopy were reassessed. Eighteen were specifically diagnosed and excluded, and follow-up (FU) information obtained for 24 of the other 35 cases. Myofibroblastic ultrastructure was seen in 7/24 (29%). Seventeen of 24 (71%) lacked myofibroblasts on electron microscopy, which showed fibroblastic or undifferentiated cells. Histologically, all tumours but one had storiform-pleomorphic areas; one myofibroblastic neoplasm was fascicular and myxoid. No other morphological differences were seen. In seven myofibroblastic cases, smooth muscle in four cases and muscle-specific actin in two cases, desmin in three cases and S100 in one case were present. In 15 other tumours, smooth muscle in five cases and muscle-specific actin in one case, and desmin in one case were present; none of these cases expressed S100. CD34 was found in the myxoid areas of one myofibrosarcoma and 3/15 other tumours. Positivity for bcl-2 was seen only in non-myofibroblastic sarcomas (4/14). On follow-up (median 41 months), 2/7 (29%) myofibroblastic tumours recurred, 5/7 (71%) metastasized, and 3/7 (43%) patients died of disease. Among the non-myofibroblastic sarcomas, with a median follow-up of 47 months, 6/17 cases (35%) recurred, 10/17 (59%) metastasized, and 7/17 patients (41%) died of disease. Conclusions:,Pleomorphic sarcomas with and without myofibroblastic differentiation on electron microscopy are clinically and histologically similar. The former display myoid immunohistochemical markers more frequently. [source]


The effect of pH on surface hardness and microstructure of mineral trioxide aggregate

Abstract Aim, To evaluate the surface microhardness of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) specimens following exposure of their surface to a range of acidic environments during hydration. In addition, the morphological microstructure features of samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Methodology, White ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Johnson City, TN, USA) was mixed and packed into cylindrical polycarbonate tubes. Four groups, each of 10 specimens, were formed using a pressure of 3.22 MPa and exposed to pH 4.4, 5.4, 6.4 and 7.4, respectively, for 4 days. Vickers microhardness of the surface of each specimen was measured after exposure. Four groups of two specimens were prepared and treated in the same way prior to qualitative examination by SEM. Data were subjected to one-way anova and post hoc Tukey's test. Result, The greatest mean surface hardness values (53.19 ± 4.124) were observed following exposure to pH 7.4 with the values decreasing to 14.34 ± 6.477 following exposure to pH 4.4. The difference between these values at the 95% CI (33.39,44.30) was statistically significant (P < 0.0001). There were no distinct morphological differences between groups in terms of the internal microstructure. However, a trend was observed that the more acidic the solution, the more extensive the porosity of the specimens. Conclusion, Under the conditions of this study, surface hardness of MTA was impaired in an acidic environment. [source]


Morphological changes in the shape of the non-pathological bony knee joint with age: a morphometric analysis of the distal femur and proximal tibia in three populations of known age at death

Abstract This study examines possible morphological variation in the knee joint of Homo sapiens with increasing age in ostensively healthy and non-pathological distal femora and proximal tibiae. Throughout the lifetime of each individual, the hard tissue of the knee undergoes considerable remodelling as a response to biomechanical stresses, changes in bone microarchitecture and reduction of bone mineral content as a concomitant of ageing. The knee is also subject to greater levels of degenerative joint disease than any other joint. If death occurs whilst such diseases are in the earliest stages, initial bone changes may not be visually obvious in museum specimens. If such specimens are used for comparative analyses, it is hypothesised that changes might render it problematic if all ages are conglomerated into discrete samples. This study therefore investigates the degree to which the distal femur and proximal tibia change shape during ageing and, if changes are present, whether they are expressed similarly in males and females. It also examines whether changes are of greater magnitude than those morphological differences which might exist between populations. In an example population of African-Americans, results indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in shape between age groups and those differences become progressively greater between the youngest and oldest adults. Results also show that although morphological variation caused by ageing is apparent, those shape differences attributable to sexual dimorphism are more powerful. When two additional populations are analysed jointly with the African-Americans (Caucasian Americans and the European Spitalfields sample), results indicate that inter-population shape differences are considerably greater than differences caused by increasing age. A comparative study of the egg morphology in four species of Eubothrium (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) with comments on their early development

Abstract. Freshly released eggs from four species of the cestode Eubothrium (Eubothrium crassum, Eubothrium fragile, Eubothrium rugosum, and Eubothrium salvelini) were subjected to morphological and morphometric analysis. The eggs of the two freshwater species, E. rugosum and E. salvelini, were ovoid with a lobed embryophore whereas the eggs of the two marine species, E. crassum and E. fragile, were more circular with a smooth embryophore. However, the morphological differences between species were not readily evident to permit their clear distinction from one another. To discriminate species, a forward stepwise linear discriminant analysis, using six of the seven measured metric characters made on the eggs, was used, which gave 100% correct classification of two species, E. rugosum and E. salvelini, and a high proportion of correct classification for E. crassum (98%) and E. fragile (83%). Of the latter two species, one specimen of E. crassum and five specimens of E. fragile were misclassified between the respective groups. The principal characters used in the classification of the species were the width of the egg, the length of the mediolateral hooks, and the width of the oncosphere. To provide more information on the life cycle of each species, the eggs were used in a series of infection trials to identify appropriate intermediate hosts. Experimental infections with freshwater copepods were successful when exposed to the eggs of E. salvelini, partially successful when exposed to the eggs of marine E. crassum with 10% of the copepods becoming infected, but no infections were obtained when the eggs of E. fragile were used. Dynamic morphological changes in the skulls of mice mimicking human Apert syndrome resulting from gain-of-function mutation of FGFR2 (P253R)

Abstract Apert syndrome is caused mainly by gain-of-function mutations of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2. We have generated a mouse model (Fgfr2+/P253R) mimicking human Apert syndrome resulting from fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 Pro253Arg mutation using the knock-in approach. This mouse model in general has the characteristic skull morphology similar to that in humans with Apert syndrome. To characterize the detailed changes of form in the overall skull and its major anatomic structures, euclidean distance matrix analysis was used to quantitatively compare the form and growth difference between the skulls of mutants and their wild-type controls. There were substantial morphological differences between the skulls of mutants and their controls at 4 and 8 weeks of age (P < 0.01). The mutants showed shortened skull dimensions along the rostrocaudal axis, especially in their face. The width of the frontal bone and the distance between the two orbits were broadened mediolaterally. The neurocrania were significantly increased along the dorsoventral axis and slightly increased along the mediolateral axis, and also had anteriorly displayed opisthion along the rostrocaudal axis. Compared with wild-type, the mutant mandible had an anteriorly displaced coronoid process and mandibular condyle along the rostrocaudal axis. We further found that there was catch-up growth in the nasal bone, maxilla, zygomatic bone and some regions of the mandible of the mutant skulls during the 4,8-week interval. The above-mentioned findings further validate the Fgfr2+/P253R mouse strain as a good model for human Apert syndrome. The changes in form characterized in this study will help to elucidate the mechanisms through which the Pro253Arg mutation in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 affects craniofacial development and causes Apert syndrome.
