Selected AbstractsFatty acid composition in some selected marine fish species living in Turkish watersJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 1 2006Abdulkadir Bay Abstract The muscle fatty acid (FA) composition of 12 selected marine fish species living in Turkish waters was determined. FA profiles of muscle were compared in terms of total and individual saturated (SFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids. Total SFA, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-6 PUFA) contents as well as n-3/n-6 FA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ratios differed (P < 0.01) in all fish species. Palmitic acid (16:0) among total SFAs, oleic acid (18:1n-9) among MUFAs, DHA (22:6n-3) among n-3 PUFAs and 18:2n-6 and 20:4n-6 among n-6 PUFAs were the most abundant FAs. The ratio of n-3/n-6 PUFA contents, indicating the availability of n-3 PUFAs that are beneficial for human health, ranged from 2.67 to 12.61. The EPA/DHA ratio was between 0.17 and 0.83 in the marine fish species studied. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Effects of GH gene polymorphism and sex on carcass traits and fatty acid compositions in Japanese Black cattleANIMAL SCIENCE JOURNAL, Issue 1 2009Astrid ARDIYANTI ABSTRACT To investigate the effects of bovine growth hormone (bGH) gene polymorphism on carcass traits and fatty acid compositions in Japanese Black cattle caused by nucleotide substitution of CTG (allele A)/GTG (allele B) at codon 127 and of ACG (allele A and B)/ATG (allele C) at codon 172 of bGH, GH genotypes of 135 cattle were determined using allele specific-multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Allele A gave greater rib thickness and lower melting point of fat (MP) while allele B gave higher C18:1% (P < 0.05). Allele C gave higher C18:1, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), unsaturated fatty acid (USFA) percentages (P < 0.05). It also gave lower saturated fatty acid (SFA) percentages, higher MUFA/SFA and USFA/SFA ratios, and lower MP (P < 0.05). Interactions of sex and GH alleles were analyzed. In heifers, allele A gave higher carcass weight, daily carcass gain, rib eye area, rib thickness, subcutaneous fat thickness, and BMS while allele B gave greater rib eye area and rib thickness (P < 0.05). Allele C gave higher C18:1 (P < 0.01), MUFA (P < 0.01), USFA percentages (P < 0.05) and MUFA/SFA and USFA/SFA ratios (P < 0.01), and lower C16:0 and SFA percentages (P < 0.05) and MP (P < 0.01). GH gene polymorphism affected carcass traits and fatty acid compositions although the effects were more pronounced in heifers. [source] LIPID, CHOLESTEROL AND FATTY ACID PROFILE OF SOME COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT FISH SPECIES FROM SOUTH CASPIAN SEAJOURNAL OF FOOD BIOCHEMISTRY, Issue 4 2010S. PIRESTANI ABSTRACT The fatty acid, lipid, cholesterol and energy contents in five commercially important fish species from South Caspian Sea (common kilka, Caspian kutum, golden gray mullet, common carp and pike perch) were evaluated. The fatty acid compositions of these five fish species ranged from 28.99 to 41.05% saturated fatty acids, 40.99,56.25% monounsaturated fatty acids and 14.22,23.03% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Among these, those occurring in the highest proportions were palmitic acid (20.42,27.9%), palmitoleic acid (11.09,26.26%), oleic acid (16.1,36.94%), eicosapentaenoic acid (3.22,7.53%) and docosahexaenoic acid (3.86,11.36%). The lipid, cholesterol and energy contents ranged from 1.97% to 10.23%, 57,302 mg/100 g and 4365.4,5544.2 cal g/dm, respectively. The obtained Statistical results showed that in these fishes, many of the above mentioned indices had significant differences (P , 0.01) and the cluster analysis results of fatty acid compositions showed that common carp and pike perch had good similarity, followed by the Caspian kutum and golden gray mullet. However, common kilka did not show any similarity to others. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Fish consumption has been linked to health benefits such as reduced risk of coronary heart disease. This is largely attributed to the lipid, cholesterol, energy contents, fatty acid compositions and the polyunsaturated fatty acids present in fish oils. The ,-3 : ,-6, polyunsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid and eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid/C16 ratios are considered to be useful criteria for comparing relative nutritional and oxidation values of fish oils. [source] A nutrition and health perspective on almondsJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 14 2006Chung-Yen Chen Almonds provide a nutrient-dense source of vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, fibre, riboflavin, monounsaturated fatty acids and protein. Although almost 50% of almond weight is fat, incremental intakes of 7 g day,1 of this tree nut reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration by 1%, especially within the context of diets recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program. Habitual almond consumption does not lead to weight gain, and their inclusion in low-calorie diets appears to promote more weight loss than a comparable carbohydrate-based low-calorie diet. Also, almonds have a low glycemic index and do not adversely impact insulin sensitivity. Almonds are an excellent source of bioavailable ,-tocopherol, and increasing their intake enhances the resistance of LDL against oxidation. In addition, the polyphenolic constituents of almonds have been characterised recently and found to possess antioxidant actions. While benefits of almonds for cardiovascular health and obesity-related diseases appear promising, the potential allergenic reaction among susceptible individuals can present a risk. Further research is required to achieve a better understanding of the role that the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of almond constituents and the synergy between them play in their associated health outcomes. Nicklas Dr.P.H. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that dietary monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) may have a beneficial health effect. Twenty-four-hour dietary intake data collected on 10-year-olds from 1978 to 1994 and on children and adults (ages 0,30 years) were examined for time, age, gender, ethnic, and geographic location differences in MUFA intake. Children's percent energy from MUFA decreased significantly from 1978 (14.1%) to 1994 (11.9%) with intake of oleic acid decreasing from 33.9 g/day (1973) to 25.7 g/day (1994). In 1994,96, percent energy from MUFA was 13% for children and adults aged 12 to 30 years, with 5% from palmitoleic acid and 93% from oleic acid. Males and blacks had significantly higher MUFA intake across all age groups than females and whites. Intakes of MUFA increased from 0 to 11 years of age to young adulthood (12,19 years), with no further increase at 20 to 30 years of age. Intakes of MUFA were lowest in the Northeast and highest in the Midwest. There were differences in food sources of MUFA by age group. For children 0 to 5 years of age, major sources were whole milk, peanut butter, 2% milk, and French fries; for children 6 to 11 years of age, major sources were whole milk, peanut butter, French fries, and 2% milk; for children 12 to 19 years of age, French fries, salty snacks, whole milk, and meat pizza were the major sources; for adults, French fries, whole milk, potato chips, and ground beef were the most common sources of MUFA. U.S. children and adults displayed temporal trends and demographic differences in intakes and food sources of MUFA. The implications of these changes and differences on biologic risk factors for specific chronic diseases warrant further investigation. [source] Studies on the Effect of Supplementing Boar Semen Cryopreservation Media with Different Avian Egg Yolk Types on in Vitro Post-thaw Sperm QualityREPRODUCTION IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS, Issue 1 2006R Bathgate Contents Fertility after insemination of cryopreserved boar semen is currently below that of fresh semen. In an attempt to improve the post-thaw motility and acrosome integrity of boar sperm, semen was frozen using an adapted Westendorf method in which the chicken egg yolk was replaced by either duck or quail egg yolk. The different composition of the yolk types, particularly the amount of cholesterol, fatty acids and phospholipids, were thought to potentially afford a greater level of protection to sperm against damage during freezing and thawing. Sperm frozen in medium containing chicken egg yolk displayed higher motility immediately after thawing, but there was no difference in the motility of sperm frozen with different types of egg yolk 3 or 6 h after thawing and maintenance at 37°C. Sperm frozen in media containing chicken or duck egg yolk had a higher proportion of intact acrosomes immediately after thawing than sperm frozen in medium containing quail egg yolk, but 6 h after thawing and maintenance at 37°C the sperm that had been frozen in medium containing chicken egg yolk had a higher proportion of intact acrosomes than the sperm frozen in media containing duck or quail egg yolk. Analysis of the composition of the different yolk types showed that the basic components of the yolks were similar, but the ratios of fatty acids and phospholipid classes differed. Duck egg yolk had more monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) than chicken egg yolk, which had more MUFA than quail egg yolk. Duck egg yolk contained more phosphotidylinositol (PI) than chicken or quail egg yolks and quail egg yolk contained more phosphotidylserine than either chicken or duck egg yolks. The differences in post-thaw motility and acrosome integrity of boar sperm when frozen in media containing the different types of egg yolk may be due to the variation in composition. Kgwatalala Summary Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the coding region of the bovine stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 gene have been predicted to result in p.293A (alanine at amino acid 293) and p.293V (valine at amino acid 293) alleles at the stearoyl-CoA desaturase1 locus. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the extent to which genotypes at the stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 locus and stage of lactation influence milk fatty acid composition in Canadian Holstein cows. Cows with the p.293AA genotype had higher C10 index, C12 index and C14 index and higher concentrations of C10:1 (10 carbon fatty acid with one double bond), C12:1 (12 carbon fatty acid with one double bond) and myristoleic acid (C14:1) compared with the p.293AV or p.293VV cows. Cows had higher C18 index and total index, and lower C10 index, C12 index, C14 index and CLA index during early lactation compared with the subsequent lactation stages. Early lactation was also characterized by higher concentrations of oleic acid (C18:1 cis -9), vaccenic acid (C18:1 trans -11), linoleic acid (C18:2), monounsaturated fatty acids and total polyunsaturated fatty acids, and lower concentrations of capric acid (C10:0), C10:1, lauric acid (C12:0), C12:1, myristic acid (C14:0), myristoleic acid (C14:1), palmitic acid (C16:0) and total saturated fatty acids compared with the subsequent lactation stages. Neither the stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 genotype nor the stage of lactation had an influence on conjugated linoleic acid concentrations in milk. [source] |
