    Bacteriological study of shrimp, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, hatcheries in India

    Shrimp hatcheries often face problems of mortality caused by diseases. To understand the bacteriological status of shrimp, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, hatcheries in India, a study of hatchery water at different points was conducted in several hatcheries located along the east and west coast of India. The species composition of the bacterial flora was also determined. The total plate counts of raw sea water on tryptic soya agar ranged from 102 to 104 ml,1, whereas it ranged from 104 to 106 ml,1 in larval tanks. In the larval tanks, the proportion of Vibrio species ranged from 50% to 73%, as compared to 31% in raw sea water. A mixed bacterial flora was observed in hatchery water; however, in the larval tanks, the flora in the larvae was predominantly made up of Vibrio species. A few of the tested Vibrio isolates were non-virulent to shrimp larvae under experimental conditions. Over 90% of the strains were resistant to amoxycillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, cephazolin, cloxacillin and sulphafurazole. Most strains showed sensitivity to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and quinolones such as norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin. [source]


    Fusarium incarnatum isolated from black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, with black gill disease cultured in Vietnam

    Abstract Fusarium incarnatum was isolated from gill lesions of cultured black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, in every crop during 2000,2002 in Nghe An province, Vietnam. Infected shrimps showed typical signs of black gill disease and mortalities about a month prior to harvest. Detailed morphological examinations, as well as molecular phylogenic analyses based on partial nucleotide sequences of ribosomal DNA, were made on the isolates. An artificial infection of kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus, using two selected isolates was also conducted and their pathogenicity determined. [source]


    Histological alterations in the hepatopancreas of Penaeus monodon Fabricius (1798) given aflatoxin B1 -incorporated diets

    Abstract Aflatoxin is a toxic contaminant produced by toxigenic fungi of the genus Aspergillus during the processing and storage of feeds and feed ingredients. Aflatoxins can cause abnormalities such as poor growth, physiological imbalances and histological changes that result in a reduction in the yield and profitability of shrimp culture. Histological changes in Penaeus monodon sub-adults fed different doses of aflatoxin B1 were studied. The doses of aflatoxin B1 administered in the diets were 50, 100, 150, 500, 1000 and 2000 ppb. At the end of the fourth and the eighth weeks of the experiment, the shrimps were sampled and the cephalothorax was observed for histological changes. Significant changes were observed in the different treatment groups at the fourth and eighth weeks. The severity of pathological changes was proportional to the increase in the concentration of aflatoxin fed to the shrimps. Histological changes in the hepatopancreas were loss of structure of the cells and tubules, nodule formation, cell elongation, desquamation, rounding of cells, fibrosis, necrosis, haemocytic infiltration and cellular inflammation.
