Selected AbstractsThe buckling mode extracted from the LDLT -decomposed large-order stiffness matrixINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, Issue 7 2002Fumio Fujii Abstract The present study proposes an innovated eigenanalysis-free idea to extract the buckling mode only from the LDLT -decomposed stiffness matrix in large-scale bifurcation analysis. The computational cost for extracting the critical eigenvector is negligible, because the decomposition of the stiffness matrix will continually be repeated during path-tracing to solve the stiffness equations. A numerical example is computed to illustrate that the proposed idea is tough enough even for multiple bifurcation. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Dynamic model of one-cycle control for converters operating in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes,INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CIRCUIT THEORY AND APPLICATIONS, Issue 5 2009N. Femia Abstract In this paper a new dynamic model of one-cycle-controlled converters operating either in continuous or in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is introduced. The static and dynamic behaviour is analysed by using sampled-data modelling combined with the small-signal linearization of the average model of the converter's power stage. The proposed model is valid for frequencies up to half the switching frequency and, while the other dynamic models presented in the literature cover continuous conduction mode only, it also gives an accurate prediction of the system's dynamic behaviour in the DCM. The model allows to determine the closed-form expression of the reference-to-output transfer function G of the system, which is a fundamental prerequisite for the design of a conventional output feedback control circuit aimed at improving the dynamic behaviour of the system in response to load variations. In this paper it is also shown that one-cycle control does not work properly in switching converters operating in deep DCM if some specific design constraints are not fulfilled. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by the results of suitable numerical simulations and laboratory experiments on a one-cycle-controlled buck-switching converter. We assume the matrix-valued coefficients are analytic in the space variable, and we further suppose that the corresponding dispersion relation admits real-valued modes only with one-dimensional polarization subspaces. Hence a BKW-type analysis of the solutions is possible. We typically consider time-dependent solutions to the PDE that are carried asymptotically in the past and as x , ,, along one mode only and determine the piece of the solution that is carried for x , +, along some other mode in the future. Because of the assumed nondegeneracy of the modes, such transitions between modes are exponentially small in the semiclassical parameter; this is an expression of the Landau-Zener mechanism. We completely elucidate the spacetime properties of the leading term of this exponentially small wave, when the semiclassical parameter is small, for large values of x and t, when some avoided crossing of finite width takes place between the involved modes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first one is a design method based on , control theory and the second one is a parameter determination method for a standard PSS by using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In order to deal with large-scale systems, a reduced model is developed to get the target system which preserves major oscillation modes only. The major oscillation modes are selected by using the residue concept, and the PSS is designed based on the target system. In order to verify effectiveness, the proposed methods are compared with the other previously proposed method based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) through many numerical simulations. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Godart ABSTRACT Thanks to their past history on the main-sequence phase, supergiant massive stars develop a convective shell around the helium core. This intermediate convective zone (ICZ) plays an essential role in governing which g-modes are excited. Indeed, a strong radiative damping occurs in the high-density radiative core but the ICZ acts as a barrier preventing the propagation of some g-modes into the core. These g-modes can thus be excited in supergiant stars by the ,-mechanism in the superficial layers due to the opacity bump of iron, at log T= 5.2. However, massive stars are submitted to various complex phenomena such as rotation, magnetic fields, semiconvection, mass loss, overshooting. Each of these phenomena exerts a significant effect on the evolution and some of them could prevent the onset of the convective zone. We develop a numerical method which allows us to select the reflected, thus the potentially excited, modes only. We study different cases in order to show that mass loss and overshooting, in a large enough amount, reduce the extent of the ICZ and are unfavourable to the excitation of g-modes.
