Selected AbstractsSalivary bacteria and oral health status in children with disabilities fed through gastrostomyINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, Issue 3 2010ARIELA HIDAS International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2010; 20: 179,185 Objectives., This study examined caries level, amount of calculus, and oral microbial environment in gastrostomy tube (GT)-fed children compared with healthy children and children with disabilities orally fed (PO). Study design., The study group consisted of 12 GT-fed children and the two control groups consisted of 16 children with disabilities orally fed and 17 healthy children. DMF-T/dmf-t index, calculus index, Mutans Streptococci (MS), Lactobacilli (LB) levels and salivary buffer capacity were examined. Results., DMF-T/dmf-t index was significantly lower in the tube-fed group. Calculus index was highest in the tube-fed group. MS and LB levels were the lowest in the tube-fed children. Correlation was found between MS and DMF-T/dmf-t. Conclusions., Tube-fed children demonstrated significantly higher calculus levels and less caries, MS, and LB levels then healthy children or children with disabilities eating PO. [source] Determinants of endotoxin levels in living environments of farmers' children and their peers from rural areasCLINICAL & EXPERIMENTAL ALLERGY, Issue 3 2004M. Waser Summary Background Lower frequencies of asthma and hayfever have been observed in children with contact to livestock. At school age, the amount of endotoxin measured in the dust of children's mattresses is inversely related to the occurrence of atopic asthma, hayfever and atopic sensitization both in children from farming and non-farming households. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate which home and lifestyle characteristics of farm and non-farm families contribute to endotoxin levels measured in different indoor home environments. Methods In the framework of the Allergy and Endotoxin (ALEX) Study, endotoxin was measured in dust samples from the living room floor and the child's mattress of 319 farmers' families and 493 non-farming families, and in settled dust from stables. Endotoxin content of all dust samples was determined by a kinetic Limulus assay (Limulus - Amebocyte -Lysate test). Information about the child's activities on farms, home characteristics and cleaning behaviours was obtained from parental questionnaires. Results Endotoxin levels in stables did not predict the amount of endotoxin measured in floors or mattresses. However, a dose-dependent association between the child's activity on the farm and indoor home endotoxin levels was observed, both in farm and non-farm children. In non-farm children pet keeping and the frequency of floor cleaning were additionally associated with endotoxin levels, whereas in farm children parental farm activities, study area, time since last cleaning, the mattress type as well as younger age of the children contributed to increased microbial exposure. Conclusion These results demonstrate that regular contact to farm animals increases indoor home endotoxin concentrations, both in farm and non-farm children, and might thus explain the protective effect of contact to livestock on atopic outcomes. To assess children's individual exposure to a microbial environment, measures of mattress dust exposure are needed as stable endotoxin concentrations were not associated with indoor home levels. [source] Clinical and Microbiological Determinants of Ailing Dental ImplantsCLINICAL IMPLANT DENTISTRY AND RELATED RESEARCH, Issue 1 2009Giorgio Tabanella DDS ABSTRACT Background: The failure of the host tissue to establish or maintain osseointegration around dental implants is due to either occlusal or parafunctional forces, premature loading, ill-directed stress, or microbial infection. The long-term failure rate of dental implants is generally 5,10%. Although a variety of etiologies of early peri-implant bone loss (from implant placement to 1-year post-loading) have been proposed, factors associated with late implant failures are less well understood but are probably related to both the peri-implant microbial environment and host factors. Discriminating between causes of implant failure is of importance for instituting a successful implant therapy. Purpose: The objective of this cross-sectional split-mouth study was to identify clinical, radiographic, and bacterial characteristics of peri-implant disease sites. Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with bilateral implants (Brånemark®, Nobel Biocare AB, Göteborg, Sweden; and 3iÔ implant systems, Implant Innovations Inc., Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA) participated in the study. Sites with peri-implantitis (radiographic bone loss beyond the third implant thread) and peri-implant healthy tissues (radiographic bone level above the first implant thread) were identified in periapical radiographs using a long-cone paralleling projection technique. Microbiological identification was carried out using established anaerobic culture techniques. A descriptive statistics based on means and standard deviations was reported. Results: Peri-implant bone loss was associated with the absence of radiographic crestal lamina dura, peri-implant pocket depth, pain on chewing, and the submucosal presence of the putative periodontopathogens Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter species, and Peptostreptococcus micros. Pain was associated with P. micros, Fusobacterium species, and Eubacterium species. Discussion and Conclusion: The absence of radiographic crestal lamina dura and the presence of suspected major periodontal pathogens seem to be associated to peri-implantitis. [source] In vitro new dialysis protocol to assay the antiseptic properties of a quaternary ammonium compound polymerized with denture acrylic resinLETTERS IN APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 3 2004C. Pesci-Bardon Abstract Aims:, To develop an in vitro protocol in order to assess the antiseptic properties of a quaternary ammonium compound polymerized with acrylic denture resin base, using experimental resin discs and dialysis membranes. Methods and Results:, Experimental acrylic resin discs were polymerized with Poly 202063A, an ammonium compound (2,50%). Antiseptic properties were assayed against two reference strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus) and a laboratory strain (Candida albicans), using three different conditions (test A, B and C). In test A, according to classical protocols the resin discs were first soaked in large volumes of microbial inoculum (45 ml). An original dialysis protocol was then designed to recreate the small biofilm volume on the prosthetic surface. In test B, discs and bacterial inoculum (600 ,l) were introduced in a dialysis bag and dialysed against a sterile buffer. A bactericidal effect was observed against E. coli and Staph. aureus (<0·1% viable cells in initial bacterial suspension). A dose-dependent fungistatic effect was observed against C. albicans. Finally, in test C discs and sterile buffer (600 ,l) were introduced in a dialysis bag and dialysed against microbial inoculum. Reduced activity was found outside the dialysis bag, demonstrating that free ammonium was able to diffuse through the dialysis membrane, displaying antiseptic properties. Conclusions:, The present protocol demonstrated that a quaternary ammonium compound remains efficient after heat polymerization with an acrylic denture base resin, both in immediate and distant microbial environments. Significance and Impact of the Study:, Such removable prosthetic devices with intrinsic antiseptic properties would contribute to improve the long-term management of denture stomatitis. [source] |
