Selected AbstractsObserving freeway ramp merging phenomena in congested trafficJOURNAL OF ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION, Issue 2 2007Majid Sarvi This work conducts a comprehensive investigation of traffic behavior and characteristics during freeway ramp merging under congested traffic conditions. On the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway, traffic congestion frequently occurs at merging bottleneck sections, especially during heavy traffic demand. The Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway public corporation, generally applies different empirical strategies to increase the flow rate and decrease the accident rate at the merging sections. However, these strategies do not rely either on any behavioral characteristics of the merging traffic or on the geometric design of the merging segments. There have been only a few research publications concerned with traffic behavior and characteristics in these situations. Therefore, a three-year study is undertaken to investigate traffic behavior and characteristics during the merging process under congested situations. Extensive traffic data capturing a wide range of traffic and geometric information were collected using detectors, videotaping, and surveys at eight interchanges in Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway. Maximum discharged flow rate from the head of the queue at merging sections in conjunction with traffic and geometric characteristics were analyzed. In addition, lane changing maneuver with respect to the freeway and ramp traffic behaviors were examined. It is believed that this study provides a thorough understanding of the freeway ramp merging dynamics. In addition, it forms a comprehensive database for the development and implementation of congestion management techniques at merging sections utilizing Intelligent Transportation System. González-García ABSTRACT We have carried out computer simulations to study the effect of merging on the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation. Initially, systems are spherical Jaffe models following a simple scaling relation (M/R2e= constant). They have been put on the FP by imposing different M/L values. Various orbital characteristics have been considered. Our results show that the merger remnants lie very close to the FP of the progenitors. Although non-homology is introduced by the merging process, mergers among homologous galaxies leave a pre-existing FP-relation intact. As a side result we find that variations in the point of view lead to non-negligible scatter about the FP. Quintana Abstract We propose that some high relative velocity dumbbell galaxies are the centers of poor clusters or groups that are coming into a merging process. The components of these galaxies closely follow the incoming velocity of the merging groups, as revealed by the bimodality of the velocity histograms. Only mergers in a direction with a small angle to the line of sight can show the large velocity difference of the components and the velocity separation of incoming subgroups in the histograms. In this case the simple interpretation would be that the dumbbells components are also in an early phase of their merger, as they still keep the information of the incoming orbits, but analysis of a numerous sample is needed to prove this suggestion (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Serous cutaneous glands in the South American horned frog Ceratophrys ornata (Leptodactylformes, Chthonobatrachia, Ceratophrydae): Ultrastructural expression of poison biosynthesis and maturationJOURNAL OF MORPHOLOGY, Issue 8 2007Irina Arifulova Abstract Serous cutaneous glands are described in newly metamorphosed and juvenile specimens of the horned frog Ceratophrys ornata using light and transmission electron microscopy. We report patterns of biosynthesis and maturation of the specific product of the gland secretory unit. The syncytial, secretory compartment possesses a complex of endoplasmic reticulum (predominantly smooth endoplasmic reticulum after metamorphosis) and Golgi stacks. The serous product is weak in density and is contained in vesicles involved in repeating merging processes. During this maturation activity, secondary lysosomes are observed, which derive from autophagic processes (crinophagy) involving the secretory materials. Ceratophrys ornata, a species representative of the type genus of the family Ceratophrydae, belongs to the heterogeneous group of anurans that, possibly as the result of convergence, all produce cutaneous poisons consisting of vesicles or faint density granules. [source] Forming supermassive black holes by accreting dark and baryon matterMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 1 2006Jian Hu ABSTRACT Given a large-scale mixture of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) particles and baryon matter distributed in the early Universe, we advance here a two-phase accretion scenario for forming supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses around ,109 M, at high redshifts z(,6). The first phase is conceived to involve a rapid quasi-spherical and quasi-steady Bondi accretion of mainly SIDM particles embedded with baryon matter on to seed black holes (BHs) created at redshifts z, 30 by the first generation of massive Population III stars; this earlier phase rapidly gives birth to significantly enlarged seed BH masses of during z, 20,15, where ,0 is the cross-section per unit mass of SIDM particles and Cs is the velocity dispersion in the SIDM halo referred to as an effective ,sound speed'. The second phase of BH mass growth is envisaged to proceed primarily via baryon accretion, eventually leading to SMBH masses of MBH, 109 M,; such SMBHs may form either by z, 6 for a sustained accretion at the Eddington limit or later at lower z for sub-Eddington mean accretion rates. In between these two phases, there is a transitional yet sustained diffusively limited accretion of SIDM particles which in an eventual steady state would be much lower than the accretion rates of the two main phases. We intend to account for the reported detections of a few SMBHs at early epochs, e.g. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 1148+5251 and so forth, without necessarily resorting to either super-Eddington baryon accretion or very frequent BH merging processes. Only extremely massive dark SIDM haloes associated with rare peaks of density fluctuations in the early Universe may harbour such early SMBHs or quasars. Observational consequences are discussed. During the final stage of accumulating a SMBH mass, violent feedback in circumnuclear environs of a galactic nucleus leads to the central bulge formation and gives rise to the familiar empirical MBH,,b correlation inferred for nearby normal galaxies with ,b being the stellar velocity dispersion in the galactic bulge; in our scenario, the central SMBH formation precedes that of the galactic bulge.
