Frébourg A laterally continuous, 3m thick oolitic grainstone has been studied in cores from two wells from the South Pars field (offshore Iran). This high porosity but low permeability interval occurs at the top of the gas-bearing succession in the Permian Upper Dalan Member, and is equivalent to the informally-defined K4 unit of the Khuff Formation. This interval can easily be traced between the wells and overlies high-energy marine deposits. It is composed of oomouldic, fine-grained azooic grainstones with cm-thick coarser-grained layers. Horizontal to oblique lamination or steep foresets were observed together with pinstripe lamination. Petrographic observations indicate a clean oomouldic grainstone with very thin chitonic rims associated with pedogenetic imprints as first-generation cements. Later cements include early vadose meniscus and pendant cements in coarser-grained layers and pseudophreatic cements in the finer-grained material with a tighter pore network, prior to ooid dissolution. Rhizoliths were observed in cores and thin-sections. The pedogenic imprints and the early vadose cementation, both related to emergence, as well as the presence of pinstripe lamination, suggest an aeolian depositional setting. This interval is the first aeolianite recorded within the Khuff Formation or equivalent units, and the first hydrocarbon-bearing carbonate aeolianite described in a hydrocarbon-producing unit. The discovery of aeolianites has important implications for regional sequence-stratigraphic interpretations and reservoir volume calculations. These deposits do not conform to classic subaqueous sequence stratigraphy and do not record eustatic variations in the associated marine basin. Their recognition is crucial for well-to-well correlations. [source] DISPUTES INVOLVING YOUTH STREET GANG MEMBERS: MICRO-SOCIAL CONTEXTS,CRIMINOLOGY, Issue 1 2005LORINE A. HUGHES This paper examines microsocial contexts of violent and nonviolent dispute-related incidents involving gang members. Data consist of reports of field observations of twelve black and eight white youth street gangs in Chicago between 1959 and 1962. Dispute-related incidents (N = 2,637) were classified according to three primary pretexts: normative or order violations, identity attacks and retaliation. Findings show that disputes associated with each of these generally unfolded consistently with expectations based on the extent to which status concerns were likely to be outweighed by such situational constraints as a close relationship between disputants and audience intervention. We suggest that understanding violence in the gang context will be enhanced greatly by further consideration of the microsocial level of explanation and linkages to its macro- and individual-level counterparts. Cimino The genus Coleochaete Bréb. is a relatively small group of freshwater microscopic green algae with about 15 recognized species. Although Coleochaete has long been considered to be a close relative of embryophytes, a comprehensive study of the genus has not been published since Pringsheim's 1860 monograph. As part of a systematic study of Coleochaete, we investigated four accessions of the genus that are morphologically similar to the endophytic species C. nitellarum Jost. Each of the four cultures was determined to be capable of endophytic growth in Nitella C. A. Agardh, a member of the closely related order Charales. Maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses were performed on nucleotide data from the chloroplast genes atpB and rbcL that were sequenced from 16 members of the Coleochaetales and from other members of the Charophyceae, embryophytes, and outgroup taxa. These analyses indicate that the Coleochaetales are monophyletic and that the endophytic accessions are members of the scutata group of species. In addition, cell size and nucleotide data suggest that at least three different endophytic species may be represented. Herbivory, nutritional benefits, and substrate competition are three hypotheses that could explain the evolution and maintenance of the endophytic habit in Coleochaete. These data also imply that diversity in the genus may be markedly underestimated. Preservation of linguloid soft-part anatomy, however, is extremely rare, and restricted to a few species in Lower Cambrian Konservat Lagerstätten. Such remarkable occurrences provide unique insights into the biology and ecology of early linguloids that are not available from the study of shells alone. Based on its shells, Lingulella waptaensis Walcott, was originally described in 1924 from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale but despite the widespread occurrence of soft-part preservation associated with fossils from the same levels, no preserved soft parts have been reported. Lingulella waptaensis is restudied herein based on 396 specimens collected by Royal Ontario Museum field parties from the Greater Phyllopod Bed (Walcott Quarry Shale Member, British Columbia). The new specimens, including three with exceptional preservation of the pedicle, were collected in situ in discrete obrution beds. Census counts show that L. waptaensis is rare but recurrent in the Greater Phyllopod Bed, suggesting that this species might have been generalist. The wrinkled pedicle protruded posteriorly between the valves, was composed of a central coelomic space, and was slender and flexible enough to be tightly folded, suggesting a thin chitinous cuticle and underlying muscular layers. The nearly circular shell and the long, slender and highly flexible pedicle suggest that L. waptaensis lived epifaunally, probably attached to the substrate. Vertical cross-sections of the shells show that L. waptaensis possessed a virgose secondary layer, which has previously only been known from Devonian to Recent members of the Family Lingulidae. [source] The Tendaguru Formation (Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, southern Tanzania): definition, palaeoenvironments, and sequence stratigraphyFOSSIL RECORD-MITTEILUNGEN AUS DEM MUSEUM FUER NATURKUNDE, Issue 2 2009Robert Bussert Abstract The well-known Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Tendaguru Beds of southern Tanzania have yielded fossil plant remains, invertebrates and vertebrates, notably dinosaurs, of exceptional scientific importance. Based on data of the German-Tanzanian Tendaguru Expedition 2000 and previous studies, and in accordance with the international stratigraphic guide, we raise the Tendaguru Beds to formational rank and recognise six members (from bottom to top): Lower Dinosaur Member, Nerinella Member, Middle Dinosaur Member, Indotrigonia africana Member, Upper Dinosaur Member, and Rutitrigonia bornhardti-schwarzi Member. We characterise and discuss each member in detail in terms of derivation of name, definition of a type section, distribution, thickness, lithofacies, boundaries, palaeontology, and age. The age of the whole formation apparently ranges at least from the middle Oxfordian to the Valanginian through Hauterivian or possibly Aptian. The Tendaguru Formation constitutes a cyclic sedimentary succession, consisting of three marginal marine, sandstone-dominated depositional units and three predominantly coastal to tidal plain, fine-grained depositional units with dinosaur remains. It represents four third-order sequences, which are composed of transgressive and highstand systems tracts. Sequence boundaries are represented by transgressive ravinement surfaces and maximum flooding surfaces. In a more simple way, the depositional sequences can be subdivided into transgressive and regressive sequences/systems tracts. Whereas the transgressive systems tracts are mainly represented by shallow marine shoreface, tidal channel and sand bar sandstones, the regressive systems tracts predominantly consist of shallow tidal channel, tidal flat, and marginal lagoonal to supratidal deposits. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] FxJj43: A window into a 1.5-million-year-old palaeolandscape in the Okote Member of the Koobi Fora Formation, northern KenyaGEOARCHAEOLOGY: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL, Issue 4 2002Nicola Stern FxJj43 differs from most other archaeological sites preserved in the Okote Member of the Koobi Fora Formation in ways that make it especially suited to the problem of clarifying the behavioral information encapsulated in fine time-lines. At this site in northern Kenya, a continuous strip of outcrops, preserving a set of interlocking landforms, can be traced around the modern erosion front for more than half a kilometer. The characteristics and three-dimensional geometries of the beds making up these outcrops show that they have preserved the southern bank, levee, and floodplain of a westerly flowing sandy channel. Both stone tools and animal bones are strewn across the eroding surfaces of these outcrops, and excavations show that they are derived from a narrow stratigraphic horizon immediately overlying the volcanic ash at the base of the sequence. The blue tuff, and the archaeological horizon that overlies it, have been dated using the 40Ar- 39Ar method on single crystals of alkali feldspar. Although there is no direct measure of how long it took the archaeological horizon to accumulate, it probably accumulated over a time span of 102,103 years. [source] Sedimentary and faunal events revealed by a revised correlation of post-glacial Hirnantian (Late Ordovician) strata in the Welsh Basin, UKGEOLOGICAL JOURNAL, Issue 3 2009Jeremy R. Davies Abstract The discovery of a previously unrecognized unconformity and of new faunas in the type Llandovery area underpins a revised correlation of Hirnantian strata in mid Wales. This has revealed the sedimentary and faunal events which affected the Lower Palaeozoic Welsh Basin during the global rise in sea level that followed the end-Ordovician glacial maximum and has allowed their interpretation in the context of local and global influences. In peri-basinal shelfal settings the onset of post-glacial deepening is recorded by an unfossiliferous, transgressive shoreface sequence (Cwm Clyd Sandstone and Garth House formations) which rests unconformably on Rawtheyan rocks, deformed during an episode of pre-Hirnantian tectonism. In the deep water facies of the basin centre, this same sequence boundary is now recognized as the contact between fine-grained, re-sedimented mudstones and an underlying regressive sequence of turbidite sandstones and conglomerates; it is at a level lower than previously cited and calls into question the established lithostratigraphy. In younger Hirnantian strata, graptolites associated with the newly recognized Ystradwalter Member (Chwefri Formation) demonstrate that this distal shelf unit correlates with the persculptus graptolite-bearing Mottled Mudstone Member of the basinal succession. Together these members record an important macrofaunal recolonization of the Welsh Basin and mark a key event in the post-glacial transgression. Further deepening saw the establishment of a stratified water column and the imposition of anoxic bottom water conditions across the basin floor. These post-glacial Hirnantian events are consistent with the re-establishment of connections between a silled Welsh Basin and the open Iapetus Ocean. However, a comparison with other areas suggests that each event records a separate deepening episode within a pulsed glacio-eustatic transgression, while also reflecting changes in post-glacial climate and patterns of oceanic circulation and associated biotic flux. [source] The advent of mineralized skeletons in Neoproterozoic Metazoa,new fossil evidence from the Gaojiashan FaunaGEOLOGICAL JOURNAL, Issue 3-4 2007Hua Hong Abstract The terminal Neoproterozoic (Ediacaran) Dengying Formation in southern Shaanxi, China, hosts two types of conical fossils: one is the so-called Conotubus, found in siliciclastic rocks in the lower and middle part of the Gaojiashan Member; the other is the renowned Cloudina in carbonate rocks of the upper Gaojiashan Member and succeeding Beiwan Member. Conotubus are conical and gently curved tubular fossils, with a variable rate of expansion. They are built of multiple thin, steep, eccentrically nested funnels set one within the next. A detailed comparison of the two conical fossils suggests that the organic tubes of Conotubus may be the precursor of the mineralized Cloudina tubes; this inference is consistent with their similarities in both wall structure and life style. Our research thus suggests that the organic skeleton preceded the rise of the mineralized skeleton in Cloudina -like fossils. Sophisticated hypotheses have been advocated, some linking the skeletal genesis to increasing levels of Ca2+ in the seas, others to the enlargement of body sizes of animals. [source] Early Cretaceous bivalves of the Neuquén Basin, west-central Argentina: notes on taxonomy, palaeobiogeography and palaeoecologyGEOLOGICAL JOURNAL, Issue 2 2007Dario G. Lazo Abstract This paper provides an updated taxonomic inventory of the bivalve fauna collected in the Pilmatué Member of the Agrio Formation of the Neuquén Basin, west-central Argentina, places the fauna in its palaeobiogeographic setting, and addresses its palaeoecological significance. Thirty-one Late Valanginian to Early Hauterivian bivalve species within 24 genera were identified. A large part (32%) of the identified bivalve species occur over a wide geographical area: from the Pacific coast of South America to Europe, North Africa, Central Asia and East and South Africa; some are also recorded in Japan. A relatively high degree of endemism (26%) is shown, suggesting that some of the bivalve species had barriers to their dispersal; larval strategy and length of larval development were probably important. A significant number (42%) of the bivalve taxa are left in open nomenclature as they are probably new species. Bivalve guilds are described to interpret palaeoecology, in particular the ecospace utilization. Guilds are based on tiering, life habit, and feeding category. Eight guilds are recognized: free-lying epifaunal, cemented epifaunal, epibyssate, boring, endobyssate, shallow burrowing, deep burrowing and deep burrowing with symbiotic bacteria. The fauna is composed only of suspension-feeders indicating that food resources were dominantly in suspension, in agreement with the predominantly shallow-water aspect of the study deposits. The ecospace utilization in the shoreface is broader than in the offshore shelf, suggesting more favourable living conditions and/or a wider range of different habitat types represented. Williams Abstract Sandstone bodies within the Lower Old Red Sandstone (ORS) in southern Pembrokeshire exhibit variability in architecture, sediment grade and composition both spatially and temporally. Four architectural styles are observed, namely decimetre- to metre-thick sheets, metre-thick multi-storey amalgamations, inclined-heterolithic units and ribbon geometries. Sandstone bodies in the Freshwater East Formation are sheet-like, heterolithic units several metres thick. An association with lingulids and wave ripples alludes to a marine influence, possibly estuarine tidal flats or storm washovers. Within the Moor Cliffs Formation, the most common sandstone bodies are centimetre- to metre-thick sheets with high width-to-depth ratios. Fine-grained sandstones represent sheet-flood deposition on unconfined, planar surfaces, whereas coarser-grained sandstones constitute distinctive amalgamations of discrete flood events, reflecting either a change in provenance or tectonic influence. Clear incision of coarse-grained, multi-storey units within the Inter-Tuff Moor Cliffs Formation reflects a change in relative sea-level, possibly tectonically induced. The base of the Conigar Pit Sandstone Member (CPSM) is marked by a distinctive, exotic-clast conglomerate defining the base to heterolithic, lateral-accretion bedsets and sandstone sheets. This association defines a significant influx of coarse-grained sediment post-Chapel Point Calcrete formation, an interval of presumed topographic stability across the Anglo-Welsh Basin. This influx must reflect rejuvenation of source regions, with changes in base-level reflecting either eustatic or tectonic influences. Commonly observed in the CPSM are fine-grained, inclined-heterolithic bedsets recording deposition by highly sinuous rivers with flashy discharge. Up-sequence within the CPSM are metre-thick, multi-storey amalgamations of predominatly trough cross-stratified medium- to coarse-grained sandstone. It is likely that these units are genetically related to contemporaneous decimetre-thick sandstone sheets, the latter being ,splay' events marginal to the main channel axis. The interbedding of multi-storey sandstones and fine-grained laterally accreted units reflects changes in provenance, slope and/or climate. Thickness variations within the Lower ORS detail significant thickening of all units northward into the Benton Fault. It seems likely that this thickening reflects variable accommodation space development associated with active growth along this and other WNW,ESE-trending faults, and migration of channel belts toward the footwall. R. Pickering Abstract Recently, Alcántara García et al. (in press) presented a new method and criteria for distinguishing between fractures imparted by hominid hammerstone percussion and carnivores chewing on ,green' limb bones of ungulates. The method uses a combination of fracture plane and fracture angle data that are useful for elucidating the relative role of hominids in the accumulation of prehistoric archaeofaunas, especially when employed in concert with other classes of taphonomic data. We briefly summarise the method and apply it to the ungulate limb bone subassemblage from Swartkrans Member 3, a c. 1.0 million year old site from South Africa that preserves Early Stone Age lithic artefacts, hominid fossils, and an abundant mammalian fauna with cutmarked, hammerstone-percussed and burned bone specimens. Results of the fracture pattern analysis corroborate indications from other lines of taphonomic data that there was minimal carnivore,hominid interdependence in the formation of the fauna, and that carnivores were probably responsible for the majority of the bone collection in Member 3. However, we also document a significant hominid influence on assemblage formation, a finding that expands and refines our understanding of large animal carcass foraging by hominids in southern Africa during the early Pleistocene. The NBC4 gene was mapped to chromosome 2p13 and is a new candidate gene for Alstrom syndrome. Two variants of the transporter have been isolated from human testis and heart, which differ in their C termini. NBC4a encodes a 1137-residue polypeptide and is widely expressed in various tissues, including liver, testis, and spleen. NBC4b is identical to NBC4a except that it has a 16-nucleotide insert, creating a C-terminal frame shift. NBC4b encodes a 1074-residue polypeptide and is highly expressed in heart. Amino acids 1-1046 are common to both NBC4 variants. NBC4a has two protein-interacting domains that are lacking in NBC4b: a proline-rich sequence, PPPSVIKIP (amino acids 1102-1110), and a consensus PDZ-interacting domain, SYSL (1134-1137). NBC4b lacks the stretch of charged residues present in the C terminus of NBC4a and other members of the NBC family.Unlike other members of the NBC family, both NBC4a and NBC4b have a unique glycine-rich region (amino acids 440- 469). Ehrenberg Eight samples of brachiopod shell material have been analyzed for their strontium isotope composition in order to more accurately date Lower to Upper Permian siliceous biogenic strata of Spitsbergen (Kapp Starostin Formation) and the southern Barents Sea (Røye Formation). The results are interpreted as showing a mid-Artinskian age for the basal Vøringen Member of the Kapp Starostin Formation and a range of late Artinskian to Roadian for the overlying part of this unit. The upper part of the Røye Formation yields ages in the range Roadian to Wuchiapingian. These results are consistent with available biostratigraphic data and confirm the potential of strontium isotope stratigraphy for developing a more accurate chronology of the widespread spiculite deposits that characterize the northern margin of Pangea in late-Early Permian to Late Permian time and which constitute a potential target for petroleum exploration. [source] RESERVOIR POTENTIAL OF A LACUSTRINE MIXED CARBONATE / SILICICLASTIC GAS RESERVOIR: THE LOWER TRIASSIC ROGENSTEIN IN THE NETHERLANDSJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2008D. Palermo The Lower Triassic Rogenstein Member of the Buntsandstein Formation produces gas at the De Wijk and Wanneperveen fields, NE Netherlands and consists mainly of claystones with intercalated oolitic limestone beds. The excellent reservoir properties of the oolites (,= 20-30%; k = 5-4000 mD) are predominantly controlled by depositional facies. Oolitic limestones are interpreted as the storm and wave deposits of a shallow, desert lake located in the Central European Buntsandstein Basin. The vertical sequence of lithofacies in the Rogenstein Member indicates cyclic changes of relative lake level. The reservoir rock is vertically arranged in a three-fold hierarchy of cycles, recognised both in cores and wireline logs. These cycles are a key to understanding the distribution of reservoir facies, and are used as the basis for a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic correlation of the reservoir units. Slight regional-scale thickness variations of the Rogenstein Member (in the order of tens of metres) are interpreted as the effects of differential subsidence associated with the inherited Palaeozoic structural framework. The depositional basin can be subdivided into subtle palaeo-highs and -lows which controlled facies distribution during Rogenstein deposition. Oolitic limestones show their greatest lateral extent and thickest development in the Middle Rogenstein during large-scale maximum flooding. Potential reservoir rocks (decimetre to metres thick) are present in the NE Netherlands, in particular in the Lauwerszee Trough and the Lower Saxony Basin, where abundant gas shows of 200 - 4000 ppm CH4 have been recorded. Preserved primary porosity is interpreted to be a result of rapid burial in subtle depositional palaeo-lows in this area. The thickest, amalgamated oolite intervals (tens of metres thick) occur in the eastern part of the Central Netherlands Basin. Because of poor reservoir properties, other areas appear to be less promising in terms of Rogenstein exploration potential. [source] THE LACUSTRINE LIANGJIALOU FAN IN THE DONGYING DEPRESSION, EASTERN CHINA: DEEP-WATER RESERVOIR SANDSTONES IN A NON-MARINE RIFT BASINJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 4 2005Jin Qiang A lacustrine fan covering an area of about 175sq. km has been identified in the Liangjialou area in the SW of the Dongying Depression, a Tertiary non-marine rift basin in eastern China. Fluvial and deltaic sandstones are established reservoir rocks in the basin, and the deep-water sandstones of the fan succession, which are assigned to Member 3 of the lower Tertiary Shahejie Formation, are also thought to have important reservoir potential. Available data for this study included some 800m of core from 16 wells, well-log data from 426 wells, and 220 sq.km of 3D surveys together with well-test and other production data. From geomorphological reconstructions of the fan, we distinguish first-order (major) fan channels from second-order branched and more distal tip channels. Crevasse splays and overbank shales occur between channels, and sandstone lobes were deposited at channel mouths. Conglomeratic sandstones deposited in major channels are probably the most promising reservoir facies (average porosity c. 20%; average permeability > 1D). Fan construction took place during a single complete cycle of lake level variation which was composed of several sub-cycles. During initial highstand conditions, the fan was dominated by small-scale branched and tip channels and intervening sandy lobes. Fan size increased rapidly during the following lowstand, and then decreased during the ensuing highstand. [source] THE HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL OF LEBANON: NEW INSIGHTS FROM REGIONAL CORRELATIONS AND STUDIES OF JURASSIC DOLOMITIZATIONJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 3 2004F. H. Nader This paper presents an updated review of the petroleum prospects of Lebanon. We briefly describe the known hydrocarbon shows in Lebanon and compare them with adjacent countries, leading to the construction of a model for hydrocarbon migration which takes into account regional facies and reservoir correlations. The oldest exposed rocks in Lebanon are the Jurassic carbonates of the Kesrouane Formation (over 1,000m thick). This formation can be divided into a basal unit dominated by seepage-reflux stratabound dolostones (the Chouane Member,) and an overlying limestone-prone unit (the Nahr Ibrahim Member). A two-stage dolomitisation model for the Jurassic carbonates in Lebanon has recently been proposed by the authors. According to this model, second-stage Late Jurassic hydrothermal dolomitisation is believed to have occurred as a result of the circulation of mixed dolomitising fluids along faults. Hence, the resulting dolostones are fault-controlled and strata-discordant, and may occur at any level within the Kesrouane Formation, locally redolomitising the Chouane Member dolostones and replacing the Nahr Ibrahim Member limestones. In this paper, we discuss the implications of diagenesis (especially dolomitisation) on the petroleum prospects of the Kesrouane Formation in Lebanon. The hydrothermal fault-related dolostones possess porosities of up to 20%, which result from intercrystalline and mouldic porosity enhancement. Porosities in the stratabound reflux dolostones (Early Jurassic) and limestones are much lower. The fact that most of the Jurassic system in onshore Lebanon was affected by meteoric diagenesis during the Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous and the Cenozoic may downgrade hydrocarbon prospectivity. However, offshore areas far from the meteoric realm may have been less (or not at all) affected by meteoric invasion. If effective seals are present there, these areas may host promising Jurassic reservoir units. We also review the prospectivity of unexposed Triassic potential reservoir units in onshore Lebanon (e. g. the "Qartaba" structure). By analogy with the Syrian portion of the Palmyride Basin, Triassic strata here may include both reservoir units and evaporite seals. [source] Biostratigraphic and aminostratigraphic constraints on the age of the Middle Pleistocene glacial succession in north Norfolk, UK,JOURNAL OF QUATERNARY SCIENCE, Issue 6 2009Richard C. Preece Abstract Considerable debate surrounds the age of the Middle Pleistocene glacial succession in East Anglia following some recent stratigraphical reinterpretations. Resolution of the stratigraphy here is important since it not only concerns the glacial history of the region but also has a bearing on our understanding of the earliest human occupation of north-western Europe. The orthodox consensus that all the tills were emplaced during the Anglian (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12) has recently been challenged by a view assigning each major till to a different glacial stage, before, during and after MIS 12. Between Trimingham and Sidestrand on the north Norfolk coast, datable organic sediments occur immediately below and above the glacial succession. The oldest glacial deposit (Happisburgh Till) directly overlies the ,Sidestrand Unio -bed', here defined as the Sidestrand Hall Member of the Cromer Forest-bed Formation. Dating of these sediments therefore has a bearing on the maximum age of the glacial sequence. This paper reviews the palaeobotany and describes the faunal assemblages recovered from the Sidestrand Unio -bed, which accumulated in a fluvial environment in a fully temperate climate with regional deciduous woodland. There are indications from the ostracods for weakly brackish conditions. Significant differences are apparent between the Sidestrand assemblages and those from West Runton, the type site of the Cromerian Stage. These differences do not result from contrasting facies or taphonomy but reflect warmer palaeotemperatures at Sidestrand and a much younger age. This conclusion is suggested by the higher proportion of thermophiles at Sidestrand and the occurrence of a water vole with unrooted molars (Arvicola) rather than its ancestor Mimomyssavini with rooted molars. Amino acid racemisation data also indicate that Sidestrand is significantly younger than West Runton. These data further highlight the stratigraphical complexity of the ,Cromerian Complex' and support the conventional view that the Happisburgh Till was emplaced during the Anglian rather than the recently advanced view that it dates from MIS 16. Moreover, new evidence from the Trimingham lake bed (Sidestrand Cliff Formation) above the youngest glacial outwash sediments (Briton's Lane Formation) indicates that they also accumulated during a Middle Pleistocene interglacial , probably MIS 11. All of this evidence is consistent with a short chronology placing the glacial deposits within MIS 12, rather than invoking multiple episodes of glaciation envisaged in the ,new glacial stratigraphy' during MIS 16, 12, 10 and 6. We showed that the tetragonal polymorph across the entire homogeneity range is isostructural to the Bi3NbO7 end member. The kinetics of the transformation from the cubic incommensurate to the tetragonal commensurate phase decreases with an increase in Ta concentration within the Bi3Nb1,xTaxO7 system. The formation studies indicate that the tetragonal Bi3TaO7 is thermodynamically stable; however, its formation via the metastable incommensurate-cubic phase is suppressed. [source] Controls on trace fossil diversity in an Early Cambrian epeiric sea: new perspectives from northwest ScotlandLETHAIA, Issue 1 2009NEIL S. DAVIES The Lower Cambrian Eriboll Formation of northwest Scotland is renowned for the high density, low diversity trace fossils (Skolithos ichnofacies) found in its upper Pipe Rock Member. Ichnofabric analysis of the member indicates that relatively small examples of Skolithos terminating at the same foreset boundary were formed during a brief colonization window after a single depositional event, that particularly long Skolithos specimens are equilibrichnia, and that palimpsests of Skolithos represent the marginal, slightly deeper water fringes of the Pipe Rock Member depositional environment. Nearest neighbour analysis, however, suggests that such palimpsests were uncommon. A much more diverse trace fossil assemblage is present in the overlying Fucoid Member (An t-Sròn Formation), comprising Cruziana barbata, Dactylophycus, Didymaulichnus, Halopoa imbricata, ?Margaritichnus, Monocraterion, Monomorphichnus, Palaeophycus striatus, P. tubularis, ?Phycodes, Planolites montanus, ?Polarichnus, Rusophycus ramellensis, ?Psammichnites, Skolithos and various unidentified traces, and represents the Cruziana ichnofacies. Above the Fucoid Member, the Salterella Grit Member ichnofauna is more impoverished, yielding only Cruziana, Monocraterion, Rusophycus, Skolithos and ?Spirophyton. The ichnological variations between the Pipe Rock, Fucoid and Salterella Grit members are interpreted as being driven by changes in sea level. The low trace fossil diversity in the Pipe Rock Member indicates opportunistic colonization of laterally extensive, shoreface sediments deposited by regular influxes of terrigenous material, which were overlain by more distal, ichnologically diverse sediments (Fucoid Member) as sea level rose. A minor regression then caused an increase in terrigenous sediment input, producing an impoverished, proximal Cruziana ichnofacies (Salterella Grit Member). [source] Precambrian animal life: Taphonomy of phosphatized metazoan embryos from southwest ChinaLETHAIA, Issue 2 2005DORNBOS STEPHEN Phosphatized fossils from the Neoproterozoic Doushantuo Formation have provided valuable insight into the early evolution of metazoans, but the preservation of these spectacular fossils is not yet fully understood. This research begins to address this issue by performing a detailed specimen-based taphonomic analysis of the Doushantuo Formation phosphatized metazoan embryos. A total of 206 embryos in 65 thin sections from the Weng'an Phosphorite Member of the Doushantuo Formation were examined and their levels of pre-phosphatization decay estimated. The data produced from this examination reveal a strong taphonomic bias toward earlier (2-cell and 4-cell) cleavage stages, which tend to be well-preserved, and away from later (8-cell and 16-cell) cleavage stages, which tend to exhibit evidence for slight to intense levels of organic decay. In addition, the natural abundances of these embryos tend to decrease with advancement in cleavage stage, and no evidence of more advanced (beyond 16-cell) cleavage stages or eventual adult forms were found in this study. One possible explanation for this taphonomic bias toward early cleavage stages is that later cleavage stages and adult forms were more physically delicate, allowing them to be more easily damaged during burial and reworking, allowing for more rapid decay. The spectacular preservation of these embryos was probably aided by their likely internal enrichment in phosphate-rich yolk, which would have caused their internal dissolved phosphate levels to reach critical levels with only miniscule organic decay, thereby hastening phosphatization. If internal sources of phosphate did indeed play a role in the phosphatization of these embryos, it may explain their prolific abundance in these rocks compared to other phosphatized fossils as well as indicating that metazoans lacking such internal phosphate sources were likely much more difficult to preserve. The phosphatic fossils of the Doushantuo Formation, therefore, provide an indispensable, yet restricted, window into Neoproterozoic life and metazoan origins. [source] Geochemistry and shock petrography of the Crow Creek Member, South Dakota, USA: Ejecta from the 74-Ma Manson impact structureMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 1 2004Crispin KATONGO The shocked minerals represent impact ejecta from the 74-Ma Manson impact structure (MIS). This study was aimed at determining the bulk chemical compositions and analysis of planar deformation features (PDFs) of shocked quartz; for the basal and marly units of the Crow Creek Member. We studied samples from the Gregory 84-21 core, Iroquois core and Wakonda lime quarry. Contents of siderophile elements are generally high, but due to uncertainties in the determination of Ir and uncertainties in compositional sources for Cr, Co, and Ni, we could not confirm an extraterrestrial component in the Crow Creek Member. We recovered several shocked quartz grains from basal-unit samples, mainly from the Gregory 84-21 core, and results of PDF measurements indicate shock pressures of at least 15 GPa. All the samples are composed chiefly of SiO2 (29,58 wt%), Al2O3 (6,14 wt%), and CaO (7,30 wt%). When compared to the composition of North American Shale Composite, the samples are significantly enriched in CaO, P2O5, Mn, Sr, Y, U, Cr, and Ni. The contents of rare earth elements (REE), high field strength elements (HFSE), Cr, Co, Sc, and their ratios and chemical weathering trends, reflect both felsic and basic sources for the Crow Creek Member, an inference, which is consistent with the lithological compositions in the environs of the MIS. The high chemical indices of alteration and weathering (CIA' and CIW': 75,99), coupled with the Al2O3 -(CaO*+Na2O)-K2O (A-CN'-K) ratios, indicate that the Crow Creek Member and source rocks had undergone high degrees of chemical weathering. The expected ejecta thicknesses at the sampled locations (409 to 219 km from Manson) were calculated to range from about 1.9 to 12.2 cm (for the present-day crater radius of Manson), or 0.4 to 2.4 cm (for the estimated transient cavity radius). The trend agrees with the observed thicknesses of the basal unit of the Crow Creek Member, but the actually observed thicknesses are larger than the calculated ones, indicating that not all of the basal unit comprises impact ejecta. Even when self-assertion offers immediate rewards, it is viewed by collectivists as risky from the long-term perspective because it impairs group membership and future rewards associated with it. Instead, collectivists are concerned with being accepted by peers as "a good member (agreeable person)." We assume that avoidance in organizational conflicts is an identity strategy, by which collectivists seek to form an interdependent identity and secure future rewards. We asked 341 Japanese business employees to rate their conflicts with supervisors in terms of coping strategies and goal achievements. Consistent with our predictions, the results indicated that avoidance contributed to group harmony and interdependent identity while it hampered personal interests and fairness. The theory of the functionality of avoidance was validated, at least with collectivists, although this long-range strategy seems to depend on an individual's belief that the organization is properly managed.
