Selected AbstractsAn immune-complex glomerulonephritis of Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum)JOURNAL OF FISH DISEASES, Issue 12 2008J S Lumsden Abstract Chinook salmon from New Zealand were shown to have a generalized membranous glomerulonephritis that was most severe in large fish. Marked thickening of the glomerular basement membrane was the most consistent lesion, with the presence of an electron-dense deposit beneath the capillary endothelium. Severely affected glomeruli also had expansion of the mesangium and loss of capillaries, synechiae of the visceral and parietal epithelium and mild fibrosis of Bowman's capsule. Chinook salmon from British Columbia, Canada with bacterial kidney disease caused by Renibacterium salmoninarum had similar histological lesions. They also had thickened glomerular basement membranes that were recognized by rabbit antiserum to rainbow trout immunoglobulin. This was true only when frozen sections of kidney were used and not formalin-fixed tissue. An attempt to experimentally produce a glomerulopathy in rainbow trout by repeated immunization with killed R. salmoninarum was not successful. Case records from the Fish Pathology Laboratory at the University of Guelph over a 10-year period revealed that a range of species were diagnosed with glomerulopathies similar to those seen in Chinook salmon. The majority of these cases were determined to have chronic inflammatory disease. This report has identified the presence of immunoglobulin within thickened basement membranes of Chinook salmon with glomerulonephritis and supports the existence of type III hypersensitivity in fish. [source] Recurrent lupus nephritis in a rejected renal allograftNEPHROLOGY, Issue 5 2002Michael MENGEL SUMMARY: The case of a 48-year-old female patient who underwent renal transplantation because of an end-stage renal disease after membranous glomerulonephritis (WHO class V) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is presented. the patient lost one cadaveric allograft immediately after transplantation because of renal vein thrombosis, presumably caused by anti-Cardiolipin antibodies. A second cadaveric allograft showed a stable function for several years before slowly deteriorating. an abrupt increase of serum creatinine led to the suspicion of a final episode of acute rejection. A biopsy was performed, which showed an overlap of rejection and recurrent iupus nephritis in an advanced chronically damaged allograft. the lupus nephritis recurred as the same WHO class V as in the native kidney, but without significant predictive clinical or serological signs of SLE activity. the case presented and a review of the literature indicate that the frequency of recurrent lupus nephritis might be underestimated, and earlier surveillance biopsies in transplanted SLE patients should be considered. Neuhoff The discovery of biomarkers is currently attracting much interest as it harbors great potential for the diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Here we have used two advanced mass spectroscopy based technologies, surface enhanced laser desorption ionization (SELDI-MS) and capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry (CE/MS), to obtain proteomic patterns of urine samples from patients suffering from membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) and healthy volunteers. The results indicate that CE/MS analysis is able to display a rich and complex pattern of polypeptides with high resolution and high mass accuracy. In order to analyze these patterns, the MosaiqueVisu software was developed for peak identification, deconvolution and the display of refined maps in a three-dimensional format. The polypeptide profiles obtained with SELDI-MS from the same samples are much sparser and show lower resolution and mass accuracy. The SELDI-MS profiles are further heavily dependent on analyte concentration. SELDI-MS analysis identified three differentially expressed polypeptides, which are potential biomarkers that can distinguish healthy donors from patients with MGN. In contrast, approximately 200 potential biomarkers could be identified by CE/MS. Thus, while SELDI-MS is easy to use and requires very little sample, CE/MS generates much richer data sets that enable an in-depth analysis. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presenting with nephrotic syndrome and membranous glomerulopathy in a 10-year-old girlACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 10 2005Vānia Machado Abstract The authors report the case of a 10-y-old girl with clinical diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), made at the age of 6 y, based upon arthritis, serositis, haematological disorder and positive antinuclear antibody. The first manifestation of disease,Raynaud's phenomenon,appeared at the age of 4 y. Seven months after the diagnosis, she developed nephrotic proteinuria with haematuria. Percutaneous renal biopsy showed membranous glomerulonephritis, the least common form of lupus nephritis. Conclusion: Intravenous cyclophosphamide therapy associated with oral prednisolone proved effective in inducing complete remission of nephrotic syndrome. [source] |
