Selected AbstractsMasticatory performance in patients with anterior disk displacement without reduction in comparison with symptom-free volunteersEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORAL SCIENCES, Issue 5 2002Ingrid Peroz Masticatory function can be impaired by craniomandibular disorders. The aim of this study was to assess masticatory performance in patients with an anterior disc displacement (ADD) without reduction. In the experiments, 29 patients and 33 age- and gender-matched volunteers chewed artificial test food for 60 chewing strokes. The collected remains of the test food were filtered, dried, fractionated by a sieving procedure, and weighed. The particle size distribution was then described using a cumulative distribution function. Patients and controls were clinically examined, and patients were asked to complete a pain questionnaire. Comparison with controls, patients showed significantly reduced masticatory performance. Patients that had had a disorder longer than 3 yr tended to display less reduction of their masticatory performance. Neither the treatment methods used, nor restriction of daily life activities or pain intensity were significantly correlated with masticatory performance. Jaw mobility was significantly reduced in patients. More than half of the patients and none of the controls had joint noises and trigger points in the masticatory muscles. Pain was present, in particular, during chewing and maximal opening of the mouth. It was concluded that patients with ADD without reduction have a significantly reduced masticatory performance. ASAKAWA summary, The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity of the Mixing Ability Test to detect improvement of masticatory function in subjects on transition from old to new removable partial dentures. Thirty-two subjects (seven males, 25 females, mean age 65·0 years) with distal extension partially edentulous area in mandible and/or maxilla participated in the study. The following reasons were presented for replacing the old removable partial dentures with new ones: fracture and/or poor fitness of retainers, extraction of abutment teeth, poor fitness of denture base, severe wear of artificial teeth and request for metal base dentures. Masticatory function with old and new removable partial dentures after an adaptation period (mean 27·4 weeks) was evaluated by the Mixing Ability Test. Subjects were asked to masticate five two-coloured wax cubes with each removable partial denture. Mixing Ability Index was obtained from the colour mixture and shape of the masticated cubes. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to test the difference of Mixing Ability Indexes between old and new removable partial dentures. The mixing ability indexes with new removable partial dentures (mean ± s.d.: 0·70 ± 0·68) was significantly higher (P < 0·001) than those with old removable partial dentures (,0·11 ± 1·13). The results suggest that the Mixing Ability Test was capable of detecting improvement in masticatory function with new removable partial dentures. Hirano summary, In order to investigate the relationship between oral sensorimotor ability and masticatory function, an oral stereognosis ability (OSA) test, masticatory performance and efficiency was employed for 15 dentate subjects. Subjects were instructed to orally identify OSA test pieces blindly. The response score and sum of the duration time for identification were used for analysis as OSA score and OSA response time. Masticatory function was evaluated using a sieving method with 3 g of peanuts. Masticatory performance was calculated with the weight percentage of portions finer than 1700 ,m by the total volume after 20 chewing strokes. Masticatory efficiency was calculated by the declination rate of median particle size which is defined by the Rosin,Rammler equation. To analyse the relationship between OSA variables and masticatory ability, the correlation coefficient was calculated. The results summarized as a significant correlation was found only between OSA score and masticatory efficiency. However, a significant correlation could not be found between other OAS variables and masticatory ability. It was revealed that positive correlation existed between oral stereognosis ability and masticatory ability. It was suggested that the role of oral sensorimotor function might affect the masticatory function. This discussion introduces the Human Genome databases as novel and powerful resources to re-examine the core problems experienced by frail and edentulous patients. Background:, Recent studies demonstrated that mandibular implant overdentures do not necessarily increase masticatory function, perception and satisfaction in denture wearers with adequate edentulous residual ridges. It has been demonstrated that the rate of edentulous residual ridge resorption significantly varies among individuals. The prognosis and cost-effectiveness of denture treatment, with or without implants, may largely depend on how the edentulous ridge is maintained. However, reliable clinical methods permitting dentists to predict the long-term health of the edentulous residual ridge are lacking. Materials and methods:, With the completion of the Human Genome Project, the genomic sequence database from this multinational consortium will provide a unique resource to determine the genetic basis of similarity and diversity of humans. Results:, One base pair in every 100 to 300 base pairs of the genome sequence varies among humans, suggesting that genetic diagnosis using the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may provide a novel opportunity to differentiate our edentulous patients. Conclusions:, Future dental service for the elderly will require a personalized care paradigm, using highly sensitive diagnostic technology such as SNP genomic analysis, for recommending the treatment with greatest potential benefit. [source] Analysis of nutritive sucking function in very low and extremely low birthweight infants in Japan: A pilot studyJAPAN JOURNAL OF NURSING SCIENCE, Issue 1 2005Manami MATSUBARA Abstract Aim:, The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences in nutritive sucking patterns between very low, extremely low birth-weight infants (LBWI) and full-term infants (FTI) and to examine the change in those sucking patterns within 5 months after birth. Methods:, Sucking patterns of eight LBWI and seven FTI were compared. In addition, sucking patterns were measured in four of the LBWI and seven of the FTI until 5 months of age to determine change in sucking wave patterns over time. Results:, During the first month after birth, there was a significant difference in the sucking wave between the LBWI and FTI. The sucking cycle time was significantly shorter and the intensity of the sucking pressure was significantly smaller in the LBWI than that in the FTI. By 5 months, significant correlations were noted between the actual age or the modified age and the sucking pressure in both LBWI and FTI. Conclusions:, The findings suggest that the weakness of oral muscular function and less sucking skill can bring about the weakness of intensity of sucking pressure, decreased time of the sucking stage in a sucking cycle, and unstable intensity of sucking pressure and time of the sucking stage in LBWI infants, causing low efficiency of milk intake and smaller amounts of milk swallowing during each sucking period as they obstructs the development of oral muscular function itself. These problems last for a longer period of time in LBWI than in FTI, leading to a deficit in the development of masticatory function in LBWI. The results of the current pilot study will serve as a foundation to investigate the development of masticatory function in LBWI as they grow into early childhood. To expand in jaws, ameloblastoma must have a mechanism of resorbing the surrounding bone. Our objective was to explore the bone-resorption mechanism of ameloblastoma by observing the role of Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in the bone-resorption process. Methods:, In the study, the expression of RANKL and MMP-9 in ameloblastoma was detected using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RT-PCR. Then, co-culture system of ameloblastoma cells and bone marrow cells from neonatal rabbit was erected to observe the potential of ameloblastoma cells to induce osteoclastogenesis. Finally, the induced osteoclasts were used for in vitro bone-resorption assay. In the co-culture system and the bone-resorption assay, the selective inhibitor of RANKL and MMP-9, osteoprotegerin (OPG) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) were, respectively, used for observing the role of RANKL and MMP-9. Results:, The expression of RANKL and MMP-9 in ameloblastoma was confirmed. Ameloblastoma cells were found to induce bone marrow cells from neonatal rabbit differentiate into osteoclasts with bone-resorption activity. In addition, OPG was found to, respectively, have markedly inhibitory effect on osteoclastogenesis (P < 0.01), and slightly inhibitory action on bone resorption (P < 0.05). Conclusions:, Ameloblastoma cells had the potential to induce osteoclastogenesis. Moreover, RANKL played an essential role in the in vitro osteoclast formation and bone resorption induced by ameloblastoma cells. [source] Measurement of jerk-cost using a triaxial piezoelectric accelerometer for the evaluation of jaw movement smoothnessJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 8 2010I. MINAMI Summary, Jerk-cost as a measure of jaw movement smoothness has been used to evaluate the masticatory function of patients with tooth loss and malocclusion. Jerk-cost measuring systems have thus far been unable to determine the jerk-cost of each chewing phase over time. The purposes of this study were (i) to develop a new method for measuring momentary jerk-cost of the jaw movement using a small triaxial piezoelectric accelerometer and (ii) to test the hypothesis that the lowest smoothness is seen during jaw-opening phase. The accelerometer was attached to the skin of the mentum of each subject. Vertical jaw displacement, acceleration, the jerk, and the time differential of jerk-cost during gum chewing were analysed as a function of time in five normal dentate subjects (n = 5). The system revealed intra-class correlation coefficients of intra-examiner, inter-examiner, and test,retest consistency of substantially high values (0·80,0·88). In all subjects, the highest jerk-cost was observed in the opening phase of each chewing cycle when the gum was parting from the teeth; the lowest jerk-cost was observed in the intercuspal phase throughout the chewing cycle, thus confirming the hypothesis. Significant differences were observed between the opening, closing, and intercuspal chewing phases (N = 5, P = 0·007). The smoothness measurement system used in this study evaluated the momentary smoothness of each chewing phase in the masticatory cycle. The system may serve as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the smoothness of the jaw movement in general dental practice. SUGIURA Summary, A variety of chewing tests and test items have been utilized to evaluate masticatory function. The purpose of this study was to compare a mixing ability test with masticatory performance tests using peanuts or gummy jelly as test foods. Thirty-two completely dentate subjects (Dentate group, mean age: 25·1 years) and 40 removable partial denture wearers (RPD group, mean age: 65·5 years) participated in this study. The subjects were asked to chew a two-coloured paraffin wax cube as a test item for 10 strokes. Mixing Ability Index (MAI) was determined from the colour mixture and shape of the chewed cube. Subjects were asked to chew 3 g portions of peanuts and a piece of gummy jelly for 20 strokes, respectively. Median particle size of chewed peanuts was determined using a multiple-sieving method. Concentration of dissolved glucose from the surface of the chewed gummy jelly was measured using a blood glucose meter. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to test the relationships between the MAI, median particle size and the concentration of dissolved glucose. Mixing Ability Index was significantly related to median particle size (Dentate group: r = ,0·56, P < 0·001, RPD group: r = ,0·70, P < 0·001), but not significantly related to glucose concentration (Dentate group: r = 0·12, RPD group: r = 0·21, P > 0·05). It seems that ability of mixing the bolus is more strongly related to the ability of comminuting brittle food than elastic food. [source] Subjective food intake ability in relation to maximal bite force among Korean adultsJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 3 2009B. I. KIM Summary, This study examined the relationship between the subjective food intake of 30 food types and their objective bite force to identify the key food items within the 30 food types to achieve a greater depth of masticatory function in Korean adults. A sample of 308 (112 males and 196 females) adults over the age of 20 (average age, 48·6) was selected among patients who visited four dental hospitals in Seoul, Korea. The subjective masticatory ability was evaluated through an interview with food intake ability questionnaires consisting of 30 food types ranging from hard to soft using a five-step Likert scale. The objective maximal bite force was measured using pressure-sensitive films. The relationship between the food intake ability and bite force was analysed and stratified according to age, gender, number of post-canine teeth lost and several clinical oral health indicators. The key foods were selected using correlation and factor analysis. The subjective food intake ability between the 30 foods and key foods were tested by cluster and one-way anova analysis. The Pearson's correlation coefficient between food intake ability and bite force was 0·45 (P < 0·01). The five key food items selected were dried cuttlefish, raw carrot, dried peanut, cubed white radish kimchi and caramel. The correlation coefficient between the food intake ability and bite force of these items was 0·51 (P < 0·01). These results suggest that the subjective food intake ability using the 30 and five key foods can be used to evaluate the masticatory function in Korean adults. KADOTA Summary, Many papers have been published on surgical mandibulectomy and reconstruction. However, only a few reports refer to masticatory function after prosthodontic treatment in mandibulectomy patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the masticatory function of mandibulectomy patients. Twenty-three subjects (10 males and 13 females, with an average age of 63 years) participated in this study: 11 subjects who had undergone unilateral marginal mandibulectomy, six subjects with unilateral segmental mandibulectomy with reconstruction and six subjects with hemimandibulectomy without reconstruction. Mixing Ability Index (MAI) was used to measure masticatory function on the non-defect side and on the defect side with a prosthesis installed. Comparisons were carried out among the marginal, segmental and hemimandibular groups and between the non-defect side and the defect side. Consequently, our study indicates these results. On the non-defect side, a significant difference was found between the marginal and the segmental groups, and between the marginal and the hemimandibular groups. In the marginal and the segmental groups, a significant difference was found between the non-defect and the defect sides. In conclusion, our study suggests that MAI is an adequate tool to study the masticatory function in mandibulectomy patients, the masticatory function of the mandibulectomy patients is more impaired than that of the ordinary removable partial denture patients, and that surgical intervention affects the masticatory function on not only the defect side but also the non-defect side in mandibulectomy patients. [source] Influence of occlusal vertical dimension on the masticatory performance during chewing with maxillary splintsJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 8 2007L. W. OLTHOFF summary, Changing the occlusal vertical dimension is a common procedure in restorative dentistry, during treatment of patients with cranio-mandibular disorders, and during orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. The treatment may alter the length of the main jaw elevator muscles and the position of the mandibular head in the fossa temporalis. These changes may influence the bite forces that are generated during chewing and thus may affect the masticatory function. We measured the objective masticatory function, defined as masticatory performance, by determining an individual's capacity to pulverize a test food. The immediate influence of the increase in the occlusal vertical dimension on the masticatory performance was determined using three anatomical maxillary splints in a group of seven dentate subjects. The splints gave an increase in the occlusal vertical dimension of 2, 4 and 6 mm, respectively. Before we started the experiments the subjects practiced chewing with the splints during about 5 min. No significant differences were observed in masticatory performance among the conditions without and with the three splints. Thus, an increase in the occlusal vertical dimension up to 6 mm did not have a significant effect on the masticatory performance. Maxillary splints may be used to study the effect of occlusal factors on the chewing process by manipulating tooth shape and occlusal area of the splint. KOSHINO summary, Successful prosthodontic treatments for a patient with removable partial dentures including maxillofacial prostheses hopefully brings about psychological wellbeing as well as improved health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and the various aspects of denture function. At first, a questionnaire with a visual analog scale with 16 question items concerning denture and/or eating problems, the present state of health, psychological and physical wellbeing, life satisfaction, and QOL was developed. To discuss the validity and reliability of the questionnaire, 48 outpatients who wore a denture were asked to fill it out. Next, to discuss the difference in QOL of the patient with various kinds of dentures and conditions, 103 outpatients were asked to complete the newly developed questionnaire. The questionnaire which contained four factor areas with eight questions for denture patients was developed by factor analysis with Varimax rotation. The reliability of the QOL scale was confirmed by reliability analysis (Cronbach's ,=0·784). The QOL score of edentulous patients with a complete denture having some trouble chewing was significantly lower than that of other denture patients. It was suggested that the wearing of a denture significantly affected the QOL of elderly persons. KOYAMA summary, The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the masticatory function and the maxillary defect configuration, size, and remaining teeth in post-maxillectomy patients restored with an obturator prosthesis. Fifty consecutive post-maxillectomy patients (mean age 67·0) participated in this study. The subjects consisted of 26 dentate and 24 edentulous patients. Data were collected from the patients' clinical records, diagnostic casts, and a questionnaire on masticatory function to evaluate the defect configuration, size, and the masticatory function scores associated with wearing obturator prostheses. The defect size was evaluated by the ratio of defect area to the horizontal impression area. The defect configuration was assessed according to Aramany's classification and separated into unilateral and bilateral defects. The multiple regression analysis and the Mann,Whitney U -test (P < 0·05) were used to assess statistical significance. The Spearman's correlation coefficient by rank test was also used to detect correlation. The following conclusions were made: (i) The presence of teeth in the maxillary dentition and the different type of the defect configuration had significant correlation with the masticatory function score (r = 0·616). (ii) The masticatory function scores of the subjects differed significantly with the presence of teeth in the maxillary dentition and the different types of defect configurations (P = 0·005, P = 0·002, respectively). (iii) There was significant correlation between the masticatory function score and the size of the defect area in the edentulous group (r = ,0·648, P = 0·001). The presence of teeth, the size and configuration of the defect influenced the masticatory function of post-maxillectomy patients with obturator prostheses. Ishijima summary, In order to elucidate the relationship between the salivary secretion rate and masticatory efficiency, experimental hypo- and hyper-salivation were produced by the administration of atropine sulphate presenting an anticholinergic effect and pilocarpine hydrochloride having a muscarine effect orally in 10 healthy fully dentates. To confirm the pharmaceutical effect of these drugs, the unstimulated whole salivary secretion rate during 10 min, and masticatory efficiency using the sieve method were measured before and after medication. The unstimulated whole salivary secretion rate during 10 min decreased significantly by the administration of atropine sulphate (P < 0·05), and increased significantly by pilocarpine hydrochloride (P < 0·01). The masticatory efficiency after atropine sulphate medication was significantly lower than that before (P < 0·01). The increase in salivary secretion by pilocarpine hydrochloride did not lead to a higher masticatory efficiency. The evidence supports the understanding that saliva plays an important role in masticatory function. [source] Influence of working side contacts on masticatory function for mandibular distal extension removable partial denturesJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 3 2003S. Sueda summary The aim of this study was to clarify the influence of working side contacts for masticatory function for a distal extension removable partial denture. Five subjects who had edentulous arches from second premolar to second molar opposing natural teeth participated. Working side contacts were altered by using three types of artificial teeth attached to the denture base. A-form teeth made contact with opposite teeth while acting as the working side in a lateral excursion. The cusp angles of B- and C-form teeth were decreased by 10° and 20°, respectively compared with A-form teeth. B-and C-form teeth discluded with opposite teeth on the working side. Subjects were asked to perform two kinds of masticatory performance test. Obtained data were evaluated by the repeated-measures anova and the Tukey test for multiple comparisons. Results revealed that there was a significant difference (P=0·001) in the three types of teeth in the mixing ability test and the value of A-form teeth was statistically less value than those of the other teeth. However, there was no significant difference in the comminuting ability test. These results suggested that working side contacts between artificial teeth and opposite natural teeth influenced mixing ability, but not comminuting ability. Mastication results from rhythmic mandibular movements. The teeth and masticatory muscles together form the mechanism whereby the food particles are fragmented. Masticatory performance and efficiency are defined as the capacity to reduce natural or artificial test materials during mastication, or by counting the number of strokes required to reduce food, respectively. Foods eaten for nourishment are very different from the industrial test materials used to quantify masticatory performance, thus, divergences could arise if the chewable material can or cannot be swallowed. This study presents a synopsis of masticatory performance methods, which is also related to muscle force, number of teeth and test chewing substance diversity. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The attributes of food, such as appearance, flavor and texture, as well as its interaction with saliva, number of teeth and conditions of the biomechanical system, influence the chewing process. In addition, reflex control and cognition can influence food perception and breakdown in the mouth. Food acceptability and choice depend on sensory properties of the food, which are perceived during chewing and swallowing. Masticatory performance and maximal occlusal force measurement may provide essential information that could lead to an appropriate diagnosis as regards masticatory function. Masticatory efficiency and performance can be measured to determine the individual's capacity to comminute a natural or a chewable test material. A material with uniform properties that can be reliably reproduced is essential to provide an ideal test bolus for the scientific study of masticatory effectiveness. Armfield Abstract Jaw-joint height (JJH) above the occlusal plane is thought to be influenced by cranial base angle (CBA) and facial angulation during growth. To better understand how JJH relates to midline craniofacial form, we test the hypothesis that relative increases in JJH are correlated with increasing CBA flexion and facial kyphosis (i.e., ventral bending) across primates. We compared JJH above the occlusal plane to CBA and the angle of facial kyphosis (AFK) across adults from 82 species. JJH scales with positive allometry relative to a skull geometric mean in anthropoids and most likely strepsirrhines. Anthropoid regressions for JJH are elevated above strepsirrhines, whereas catarrhines exhibit a higher slope than platyrrhines. Semipartial correlations between relative JJH and both CBA and AFK show no association across a small strepsirrhine sample, limited associations among catarrhines and anthropoids, but strong correlations in platyrrhines. Contrary to our hypothesis, however, increases in relative JJH are correlated with relatively less flexed basicrania and more airorhynch faces (i.e., reduced ventral bending) in platyrrhines. The mosaic pattern of relationships involving JJH across primate clades points to multiple influences on JJH across primates. In clades showing little association with basicranial and facial angles, such as strepsirrhines, the potential morphological independence of JJH may facilitate a relative freedom for evolutionary changes related to masticatory function. Finally, failure to associate relative JJH and basicranial flexion in most clades suggests that the relatively taller JJH and more flexed basicrania of anthropoids compared to strepsirrhines may have evolved as an isolated event during the origin of anthropoids. Kupczik Abstract Research on the evolution and adaptive significance of primate craniofacial morphologies has focused on adult, fully developed individuals. Here, we investigate the possible relationship between the local stress environment arising from masticatory loadings and the emergence of the supraorbital torus in the developing face of the crab-eating macaque Macaca fascicularis. By using finite element analysis (FEA), we are able to evaluate the hypothesis that strain energy density (SED) magnitudes are high in subadult individuals with resulting bone growth in the supraorbital torus. We developed three micro-CT-based FEA models of M. fascicularis skulls ranging in dental age from deciduous to permanent dentitions and validated them against published experimental data. Applied masticatory muscle forces were estimated from physiological cross-sectional areas of macaque cadaveric specimens. The models were sequentially constrained at each working side tooth to simulate the variation of the bite point applied during masticatory function. Custom FEA software was used to solve the voxel-based models and SED and principal strains were computed. A physiological superposition SED map throughout the face was created by allocating to each element the maximum SED value from each of the load cases. SED values were found to be low in the supraorbital torus region throughout ontogeny, while they were consistently high in the zygomatic arch and infraorbital region. Thus, if the supraorbital torus arises to resist masticatory loads, it is either already adapted in each of our subadult models so that we do not observe high SED or a lower site-specific bone deposition threshold must apply. Balshi DOS ABSTRACT Background: A growing body of evidence indicates that successful osseointegration of dental implants can take place in the wake of immediate loading, providing that bone quality and quantity are adequate, and patients follow postsurgical instructions carefully. Purpose: The goal of this report is to demonstrate the efficient treatment protocol based on immediate loading for both the maxilla and mandible, including extraction site locations. Materials and Methods: Following extraction of the remaining anterior mandibular teeth, 18 Brånemark implants (Nobel Biocare AB, Gothenburg, Sweden), including two zygoma and two pterygoid implants, were installed in both arches in accordance with the Teeth in a Day protocol developed by the authors 9 years ago. This protocol uses an acrylic screw-retained prosthesis, with steel prosthetic copings embedded, supported by full-size Brånemark implants to prevent micromotion at the bone-to-implant interface. Results: Only 1 of the 18 immediately loaded implants failed to osseointegrate. Three years after completion of treatment, the patient reported functioning well with no complications. Conclusions: When appropriate subjects are selected, the Teeth in a Day protocol offers patients a number of significant advantages, including condensed treatment time, reduced postsurgical discomfort, and almost instantaneous improvement in speech and masticatory function, esthetics, and patient self-image. [source] Attrition, occlusion, (dys)function, and intervention: a systematic reviewCLINICAL ORAL IMPLANTS RESEARCH, Issue 2007Arie Van 't Spijker Abstract Objectives: Attrition and occlusal factors and masticatory function or dysfunction are thought to be related. This study aims to systematically review the literature on this topic with the emphasis to find evidence for occlusion-based treatment protocols for attrition. Materials and methods: Literature was searched using PubMed (1980 to 2/2006) and the Cochrane Library of Clinical Trials with the keywords ,tooth' and ,wear'. Five steps were followed. Exclusion was based on the following: (1) reviews, case-reports, studies on non-human tooth material, and studies not published in English and (2) historical or forensic studies. Included were (3) in vivo studies. Next, studies on (4) occlusal factors, function or dysfunction [temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism], or intervention, and (5) attrition were included. Two investigators independently assessed the abstracts; measure of agreement was calculated using Cohen's ,; disagreement was resolved by discussion. Full-text articles were obtained and correlation between outcomes on occlusal factors, (dys)function, treatment, and attrition were retrieved. References in the papers included in the final analysis were cross-matched with the original list of references to add references that met the inclusion criteria. Results: The search procedure revealed 1289 references on tooth wear. The numbers of included studies after each step were (1) 345 (,=0.8), (2) 287 (,=0.87), (3) 174 (,=0.99), (4) 81 (,=0.71), and (5) 27 (,=0.68). Hand searches through the reference lists revealed six additional papers to be included. Analysis of the 33 included papers failed to find sound evidence for recommending a certain occlusion-based treatment protocol above another in the management of attrition. Conclusion: Some studies reported correlations between attrition and anterior spatial relationships. No studies were found suggesting that absent posterior support necessarily leads to increased attrition, though one study found that fewer number of teeth resulted in higher tooth wear index (on the remaining teeth). Attrition seems to be co-existent with self-reported bruxism. Reports on attrition and TMD signs and symptoms provide little understanding of the relationship between the two. [source] |
