Selected AbstractsDevelopmental coordination disorder in children with attention-deficit,hyperactivity disorder and physical therapy interventionDEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE & CHILD NEUROLOGY, Issue 12 2007Nathan Watemberg MD Although physical therapy (PT) is effective in improving motor function in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), insufficient data are available on the impact of this intervention in children with combined attention-deficit,hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and DCD. This prospective study aimed to establish the prevalence of DCD among a cohort of patients with ADHD, characterize the motor impairment, identify additional comorbidities, and determine the role of PT intervention on these patients. DCD was detected in 55.2% of 96 consecutive children with ADHD (81 males, 15 females), mostly among patients with the inattentive type (64.3% compared with 11% of those with the hyperactive/impulsive type, p<0.05). Mean age was 8 years 4 months (SD 2y). Individuals with both ADHD and DCD more often had specific learning disabilities (p=0.05) and expressive language deficits (p=0.03) than children with ADHD only. Twenty-eight patients with ADHD and DCD randomly received either intensive group PT (group A, mean age 9y 3mo, SD 2y 3mo) or no intervention (group B, mean age 9y 3mo, SD 2y 2mo). PT significantly improved motor performance (assessed by the Movement Assessment Battery for Children; p=0.001). In conclusion, DCD is common in children with ADHD, particularly of the inattentive type. Patients with both ADHD and DCD are more likely to exhibit specific learning disabilities and phonological (pronunciation) deficits. Intensive PT intervention has a marked impact on the motor performance of these children. [source] Genotype differences in cognitive functioning in Noonan syndromeGENES, BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR, Issue 3 2009E. I. Pierpont Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal-dominant genetic disorder associated with highly variable features, including heart disease, short stature, minor facial anomalies and learning disabilities. Recent gene discoveries have laid the groundwork for exploring whether variability in the NS phenotype is related to differences at the genetic level. In this study, we examine the influence of both genotype and nongenotypic factors on cognitive functioning. Data are presented from 65 individuals with NS (ages 4,18) who were evaluated using standardized measures of intellectual functioning. The cohort included 33 individuals with PTPN11 mutations, 6 individuals with SOS1 mutations, 1 individual with a BRAF mutation and 25 participants with negative, incomplete or no genetic testing. Results indicate that genotype differences may account for some of the variation in cognitive ability in NS. Whereas cognitive impairments were common among individuals with PTPN11 mutations and those with unknown mutations, all of the individuals with SOS1 mutations exhibited verbal and nonverbal cognitive skills in the average range or higher. Participants with N308D and N308S mutations in PTPN11 also showed no (or mild) cognitive delays. Additional influences such as hearing loss, motor dexterity and parental education levels accounted for significant variability in cognitive outcomes. Severity of cardiac disease was not related to cognitive functioning. Our results suggest that some NS-causing mutations have a more marked impact on cognitive skills than others. [source] Size matters sometimes: wall height and the structure of subtidal benthic invertebrate assemblages in south-eastern Australia and Mediterranean SpainJOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY, Issue 12 2003A. R. Davis Abstract Aim, Variation in the structure of shallow subtidal invertebrate assemblages was examined over three spatial scales; within reef, between reef and between continents. We sought to provide a context from which to examine and interpret ecological processes between continents. In addition, we predicted that variation in pattern would increase as the scale of examination increased. Location, Reefs near Wollongong and within Jervis Bay in south-eastern Australia and Mediterranean reefs on the Costa Brava (Catalonia), north-eastern Spain. Methods, We compared assemblages on vertical rock walls of two heights , short (< 2 m) and tall (> 3 m) in two temperate regions over the same depth range. Specifically we examined the diversity and cover of invertebrates, the cover and biomass of foliose and crustose algae, the size of invertebrate colonies and the biomass of urchins on short and tall walls (n = 3) at each of two locations in each country. Results, Foliose algae dominated rock walls in Spain and although invertebrate cover was high, colonies were generally very small. Two urchin species were commonly encountered on rock walls in Spain, Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus; their biomass was relatively low and did not differ significantly between short and tall walls. These findings contrasted strongly with south-eastern Australia, where foliose algae were almost completely absent. A single urchin species, Centrostephanus rodgersii occurred with extremely high biomass on short walls, which were dominated by grazer-resistant crustose calcareous algae. In contrast, the biomass of this urchin was low on tall walls, which were dominated by invertebrates, usually exceeding 95% in cover. Invertebrate colonies were significantly larger on both short and tall walls in south-eastern Australia relative to the Mediterranean. Findings within a country were consistent between the replicate rock walls and between locations. In contrast to our prediction, however, there was significant variation among walls within a location, but not among locations within a continent. Temporal variation in the structure of these assemblages was not examined, but appears limited. Main conclusions, We conclude that submarine topography, i.e. the presence of short or tall rock walls, as a function of rock type and structure, has a marked impact on community structure in south-eastern Australia, but made little difference to the structure of the assemblage in Mediterranean Spain. The differences in structure we observed between walls of different heights in Australia were correlated with differences in the biomass of urchins and they appear to be major determinants of assemblage structure. Interactions among species are often reported from disparate parts of the globe with little or no reference to the structure of the assemblage of which they are a part; we contend that this will hinder interpretation. Our data are consistent with the organisms in these two regions experiencing distinct selection pressures; for example high levels of urchin grazing activity in south-eastern Australia, and shading and whiplash associated with an algal canopy in the Mediterranean. It may not be appropriate to contrast processes operating at very large (intercontinental) scales unless context can be established with a clear understanding of ecological pattern. Nuestro objetivo era proveer un contexto para examinar y interpretar procesos ecológicos entre continentes. Además, realizamos la predicción de que el modelo de variación aumentaría conforme aumentaba la escala de observación. Localidad, Arrecifes rocosos cerca de Wollongong y en Jarvis Bay en la zona sudeste de Australia y arrecifes rocosos mediterráneos en la Costa Brava (Cataluña), en el nordeste de España. Metodos, Comparamos comunidades en paredes rocosas verticales de dos alturas , bajas (< 2 m) y altas (> 3 m) en dos regiones templadas y dentro del mismo rango de profundidades. Específicamente, examinamos la diversidad y el recubrimiento de invertebrados, el recubrimiento y la biomasa de algas foliosas e incrustantes, la medida de las colonias de invertebrados y la biomasa de erizos en paredes bajas y altas (n = 3) en dos localidades de cada país. Resultados, Las algas foliosas dominaban las paredes rocosas en España y, aunque el recubrimiento de invertebrados era alto, las colonias eran generalmente muy pequeñas. [source] Patterns of elephant impact on woody plants in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park, Kwazulu-Natal, South AfricaAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 1 2010Roger Patrick Boundja Abstract This study identifies patterns of elephant Loxodonta africana africana impacts upon tree species and woody plant communities in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, a South African savannahs/woodlands area. Elephants were reintroduced there from 1981, following more than 80 years of absence. Data were collected in 2003 on elephant impact on woodland in the Park. Different vegetation types were susceptible to different types and levels of damage by elephants, suggesting that elephants will not homogenize the vegetation. Elephants targeted larger stems for all types of damage, with a strong preference for some of the less abundant species such as Albizia versicolor (breaking and toppling) and Cordia caffra and Schotia brachypetala (debarking). Elephant impacts tended to be distributed evenly across the park landscape, irrespective of stem density or proximity to permanent water. Overall, elephants have little impact on slowing or reversing the spread of undesirable woody species, but are having a marked impact on certain less common tree species and larger tree size-classes in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. Résumé Cette étude identifie le schéma des impacts des éléphants Loxodonta africana africana sur des espèces d'arbres et sur des communautés végétales du Parc de Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, une zone de forêts et de savanes d'Afrique du Sud. Des éléphants y furent réintroduits à partir de 1981, après une absence de plus de 80 ans. En 2003, on a récolté des données sur l'impact des éléphants sur les forêts du parc. ON a vu que les différents types de végétation étaient sensibles à des types et à des niveaux différents de dommages causés par les éléphants, ce qui laisse entendre que les éléphants ne vont pas uniformiser la végétation. Les éléphants visaient les plus gros troncs pour tous les types de dommages, avec une préférence marquée pour certaines des espèces les moins abondantes, comme Albizia versicolor (cassés et renversés) et Cordia caffra and Schotia brachypetala (écorcés). Les impacts des éléphants avaient tendance àêtre répartis également dans tout le paysage du parc, quelles que soient la densité des troncs ou la proximité de points d'eau permanents. This article argues that changes in the roles and functions of local authorities have had a marked impact on the nature of local political leadership. Three phases (operational, transitional and collaborative) are identified and leadership roles are related to changes in the political context of local government. The fundamental tasks of leadership have not changed but what has changed is the balance or relative emphasis between them and the way they have been interpreted. While elected local authorities cannot ignore the implications of the changed external agenda , notably the advent of new forms of executive leadership , the way they respond still bears the mark of the local political culture. METHODS Seventy-two patients with localized PCa were prospectively studied based on their blood samples before and after ADT for 6 months. Serum androgens and related values were measured. RESULTS Before ADT, there was no correlation between the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and androgen levels. After ADT, the serum PSA levels were correlated with each level of serum testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), and 3alpha-diol G (P,<,0.010 in all). Before ADT, patients with Gleason score of ,8 were likely to have lower serum testosterone levels than those with Gleason score of ,6 (P,=,0.058). After ADT, conversely, the testosterone levels in patients with Gleason score of ,8 appeared to be higher than in those with Gleason score of ,6 (P,=,0.060). The serum DHEA-S level was correlated with Gleason score before and after ADT (P,=,0.050 and P,=,0.040, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The serum PSA levels well reflect the androgen milieu in localized PCa patients receiving ADT, which can be explained by the Saturation Model and disease control. The androgen milieu in men with high Gleason score PCa is probably less affected by conventional ADT than that in men with low score cancer, which was suggested to be associated with adrenal androgen levels. Given that cytokines are dysregulated in many diseases, the purpose of this work was to assess the impact of cytokines on the expression of CYPs, transporters and chemokine receptors in PBMC. Experimental approach:, Human PBMC were incubated with cytokines for 48 h. ATP-binding cassette (ABC)B1, ABCC1, ABCC2, CYP2B6, CYP3A4, CXCR4 and CCR5 expression were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and flow cytometry at 0, 4, 8, 24 and 48 h. Enzyme activity was assessed using fluorescent probes. Key results:, We show here functional activity of CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 in PBMC. Furthermore, cytokines had a significant impact on the mRNA and protein expression of all proteins. For example, interleukin-2 (IL-2) had a marked impact on ABCB1 mRNA (% control 4745 ± 11961) and protein (% control 200 ± 57). Increases in drug efflux transporter expression, in response to cytokines, resulted in reduced cellular accumulation of digoxin [decrease of 17% and 26% for IL-2 and interferon-, (IFN,) respectively] and saquinavir (decrease of 28% and 30% for IL-2 and IFN, respectively). The degree to which drug transporter and chemokine receptor expression changed in response to cytokines was positively correlated (e.g. ABCB1 and CXCR4, r2 = 0.545). Conclusions and implications:, These data have important implications for diseases in which cytokines are dysregulated and for which pharmacological intervention targets immune cells. Palosuo Summary Background Hevea brasiliensis (Hev b) 2 and Hev b 13 have recently been identified as major latex allergens by detecting specific IgE antibodies in >50% of sera from Hev b latex-allergic individuals. Objective We assessed the prevalence rates for sensitization to extensively purified latex allergens in patients from three diverse geographical areas. Methods Native Hev b 2, Hev b 5, Hev b 6.01 and Hev b 13 were purified by non-denaturating chromatography and were used in ELISAs to assess sera from 215 latex-allergic patients and 172 atopic non-sensitized controls from Finland, Spain and the United States to detect allergen-specific IgE antibodies. Results Unexpectedly, even highly purified Hev b 13 contained epitope(s) to which Hev b 6-specific human IgE antibodies bound effectively. Further purification, however, reduced the prevalence of IgE antibody reactivity to low levels: 15%, 5% and 11% for Hev b 2, and 18%, 30% and 27% for Hev b 13 among latex-allergic Finnish, Spanish and American patients, respectively. Interestingly, Finnish patients had a lower prevalence of Hev b 5-specific IgE antibody (28%) as compared with Spanish (49%) and American (71%) patients. The prevalence of Hev b 6.01-specific IgE reactivity was uniformly >50% in all three populations. Conclusion Neither Hev b 2 nor Hev b 13 appear to be major latex allergens when evaluated in serological assays using highly purified allergens. The reason(s) for the observed differences in published sensitization rates in various geographic regions requires further study. The purity of the allergen preparations has a marked impact on the accuracy of latex-specific IgE antibody detection in epidemiological studies and in the serological diagnosis of latex allergy.
