Selected AbstractsStrategic orientation and performance of internet-based businessesINFORMATION SYSTEMS JOURNAL, Issue 1 2004Varun Grover Abstract., Many of the pure internet-based businesses that proliferated over the past 5 years have encountered serious problems as their lofty valuations have plunged. Industry observers have attributed this phenomenon to a variety of factors, generally framed in terms of poor conceptualization or implementation of the ,business model'. This study explores an often-used concept in strategic management called ,strategic orientation' and applies it to internet-based businesses. Based on an analysis of over 100 public businesses, firms that cluster together with similar strategic orientation are observed. These strategic groups are then analysed for performance differences. The results are discussed with the intent of learning from the dot-burn effects as we evolve to the next generation of internet-based business. [source] ,The geriatric hospital felt like a backwater': aspects of older people's nursing in Britain, 1955,1980JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 19 2009Jane Brooks Aims and objectives., The aim of this article is to examine the experiences of ward-level nurses who cared for older people in general hospitals between 1955,1980. Background., There is very little published on the history of older adult nursing and no recent material from the United Kingdom. There are, however, the works of Cecily Hunter in Australia and Erica Roberts in Canada. It is the intention of this study to contribute to this important area of research. Design., This is an oral history project in which 20 nurses who had worked on older adults ward between 1955,1980 were interviewed. Methods., All the interviews were taped, transcribed and data-themed. Ethical clearance for the project was obtained from the University Ethics Committee and all participants were anonymised. Results., Many of the nurses found the experience very difficult, though there were exceptions. Several participants had worked on older adults ward during their training and then had never wanted to return. Most described a paucity of resources and longevity of staff on the wards. Conclusions., Using the sociological theory of Erving Goffman, this article introduces a novel method of understanding nursing history, although his ideas have been used in medical history. The value of his theories for this study is in the identification of nurses as being part of the same system as the patients themselves. Implications for contemporary policy, research and/or practice., For nurses to care effectively for their patients, nurses themselves must be valued. Subordination and regimentation tend to dehumanise the carers which, in turn, dehumanises the cared for. O'Brien Summary., Many of the major advances in treating patients for chronic hepatitis C have been made based on the results of randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trials. However, given the large number of hepatitis C medications in development, physicians need to understand the unique elements and types of clinical trials in order to make accurate comparisons of differing drug efficacy claims. Clinicians also need to be aware of the various factors that can influence the outcomes and interpretations of these trials, irrespective of the intervention under study. For example, similar trials conducted in the United States and Europe may have different outcomes simply because the study populations differ. Thus, both trial design and patient population are important considerations in the design and analysis of clinical trials for patients with chronic hepatitis C. Van Driel PhD ABSTRACT Introduction., As specialists in male genital problems, urologists and sexologists will most likely to be involved in the treatment of males presenting with sleep-related painful erections (SRPEs). This means that this phenomenon needs to be recognized by urologists and sexologists, and that they should have knowledge of the current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Aim., To review the literature on SRPE and to find the best pharmacological treatment. Methods., Four personal clinical observations from two clinics and 29 other cases with SRPE found in PubMed were analyzed, especially regarding the results of pharmacological treatment. Main Outcome Measures., The results of pharmacological treatment. Results., Many of the various treatments proved to be ineffective and only a few showed efficacy for a few weeks or months. The only effective drugs in the long term were baclofen, clonazepam, and clozapine. Conclusions., Until now, the phenomenon of SRPE is not well understood. The rarity of the published cases undoubtedly does not reflect the actual occurrence of SRPE.
