Phenotypic plasticity in number of glomeruli and sensory innervation of the antennal lobe in leaf-cutting ant workers (A. vollenweideri)

Abstract In the leaf-cutting ant Atta vollenweideri, the worker caste exhibits a pronounced size-polymorphism, and division of labor is dependent on worker size (alloethism). Behavior is largely guided by olfaction, and the olfactory system is highly developed. In a recent study, two different phenotypes of the antennal lobe of Atta vollenweideri workers were found: MG- and RG-phenotype (with/without a macroglomerulus). Here we ask whether the glomerular numbers are related to worker size. We found that the antennal lobes of small workers contain ,390 glomeruli (low-number; LN-phenotype), and in large workers we found a substantially higher number of ,440 glomeruli (high-number; HN-phenotype). All LN-phenotype workers and some small HN-phenotype workers do not possess an MG (LN-RG-phenotype and HN-RG-phenotype), and the remaining majority of HN-phenotype workers do possess an MG (HN-MG-phenotype). Using mass-staining of antennal olfactory receptor neurons we found that the sensory tracts divide the antennal lobe into six clusters of glomeruli (T1,T6). In LN-phenotype workers, ,50 glomeruli are missing in the T4-cluster. Selective staining of single sensilla and their associated receptor neurons revealed that T4-glomeruli are innervated by receptor neurons from the main type of olfactory sensilla, the Sensilla trichodea curvata. The other type of olfactory sensilla (Sensilla basiconica) exclusively innervates T6-glomeruli. Quantitative analyses of differently sized workers revealed that the volume of T6 glomeruli scales with the power of 2.54 to the number of Sensilla basiconica. The results suggest that developmental plasticity leading to antennal-lobe phenotypes promotes differences in olfactory-guided behavior and may underlie task specialization within ant colonies. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. CD303 (BDCA-2) signals in plasmacytoid dendritic cells via a BCR-like signalosome involving Syk, Slp65 and PLC,2

Abstract Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) are the main type,I interferon (IFN-I) producers and play a central role in innate and adaptive immunity. CD303 (BDCA-2) is a type,II c-type lectin specifically expressed by human PDC. CD303 signaling induces tyrosine phosphorylation and Src kinase dependent calcium influx. Cross-linking CD303 results in the inhibition of IFN-I production in stimulated PDC. Here, we demonstrate that PDC express a signalosome similar to the BCR signalosome, consisting of Lyn, Syk, Btk, Slp65 (Blnk) and PLC,2. CD303 associates with the signaling adapter FcR ,-chain. Triggering CD303 leads to tyrosine phosphorylation of Syk, Slp65, PLC,2 and cytoskeletal proteins. Analogous to BCR signaling, CD303 signaling is likely linked with its internalization by clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Furthermore, CD303 signaling leads to reduced levels of transcripts for IFN-I genes and IFN-I-responsive genes, indicating that the inhibition of IFN-I production by stimulated PDC is at least partially regulated at the transcriptional level. These results support a possible therapeutic value of an anti-CD303 mAb strategy, since the production of IFN-I by PDC is considered to be a major pathophysiological factor in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. Magmatic inclusions and felsic clasts in the Dar al Gani 319 polymict ureilite

Type I ureilite clasts (olivine-pigeonite assemblages with carbon), as well as other lithic and mineral clasts in this meteorite, are described in Ikeda et al.(2000). The magmatic inclusions in the type II ureilite clasts consist mainly of magnesian augite and glass. They metastably crystallized euhedral pyroxenes, resulting in feldspar component-enriched glass. On the other hand, the magmatic inclusions in the large plagioclase clast consist mainly of pyroxene and plagioclase, with a mesostasis. They crystallized with a composition along the cotectic line between the pyroxene and plagioclase liquidus fields. DaG 319 also contains felsic lithic clasts that represent various types of igneous lithologies. These are the rare components not found in the common monomict ureilites. Porphyritic felsic clasts, the main type, contain phenocrysts of plagioclase and pyroxene, and their groundmass consists mainly of plagioclase, pyroxene, and minor phosphate, ilmenite, chromite, and/or glass. Crystallization of these porphyritic clasts took place along the cotectic line between the pyroxene and plagioclase fields. Pilotaxitic felsic clasts crystallized plagioclase laths and minor interstitial pyroxene under metastable conditions, and the mesostasis is extremely enriched in plagioclase component in spite of the ubiquitous crystallization of plagioclase laths in the clasts. We suggest that there are two crystallization trends, pyroxene-metal and pyroxene-plagioclase trends, for the magmatic inclusions and felsic lithic clasts in DaG 319. The pyroxene-metal crystallization trend corresponds to the magmatic inclusions in the type II ureilite clasts and the pilotaxitic felsic clasts, where crystallization took place under reducing and metastable conditions, suppressing precipitation of plagioclase. The pyroxene-plagioclase crystallization trend corresponds to the magmatic inclusions in the isolated plagioclase clast and the porphyritic felsic clasts. This trend developed under oxidizing conditions in magma chambers within the ureilite parent body. The felsic clasts may have formed mainly from albite component-rich silicate melts produced by fractional partial melting of chondritic precursors. The common monomict ureilites, type I ureilites, may have formed by the fractional partial melting of alkali-bearing chondritic precursors. However, type II ureilites may have formed as cumulates from a basaltic melt. [source]


Ordovician Carbonate Reservoir Bed Characteristics and Reservoir-Forming Conditions in the Lungudong Region of the Tarim Basin

Abstract: Basic characteristics of Ordovician carbonate reservoir beds in the Lungudong region of northeastern part of the Tarim Basin are described in detail and the reservoir-forming conditions of oil and gas are preliminarily discussed in this paper by collecting and sorting out a large amount of data. The carbonate reservoir beds are mainly developed in open-platform and platform marginal facies; the reservoir beds have large changes in and low average values of physical property; the main type is fractured reservoir beds with the fracture-porous type second. The reservoir bed development is chiefly controlled by the distribution of sedimentary facies, tectonic activity and karstification. Whereas the accumulation and distribution of hydrocarbons in the region are controlled by an advantageous structural location, a good reservoir-caprock combination and a favorable transporting system, with the distribution characterized by zones horizontally and belts vertically, the oil and gas are mainly concentrated in areas with structural uplift, densely developed fractures, and surface karst, a vertical vadose zone, and a horizontal undercurrent belt of palaeokarst. Degeneration of germ line cells in amphibian ovary. ,Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91: 319,327 We studied the morphology of degenerating ovarian follicles in juvenile and adult frogs Rana temporaria, Rana lessonae and Rana ridibunda. Degeneration of primordial germ cells was never observed and was extremely rare in oogonia and early oocytes in a cyst phase in juveniles. Previtellogenic oocytes were rarely affected. Three main types of atresia were identified. In type I (subdivided into stages A,D), vitellogenic oocytes are digested by proliferating follicle cells that hypertrophy and become phagocytic. A , germinal vesicle shrinks, nucleoli fuse, oocyte envelope interrupts, and follicular cells hypertrophy; B , follicular cells multiply and invade the oocyte; C , entire vesicle is filled by phagocytic cells; D , degenerating phagocytes accumulate black pigment. Type II is rare and resembles breakdown of follicles and release of ooplasm. In type III, observed in previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes, ooplasm and germinal vesicle shrink, follicle cells do not invade the vesicle, and condensed ooplasm becomes fragmented. The residual oogonia in adult ovaries (germ patches) multiply, but soon degenerate. [source]


MIOR: an individual-based model for simulating the spatial patterns of soil organic matter microbial decomposition

Summary An individual-based model, called MIOR, was designed to assess hypotheses on the effect of the spatial distribution of organic matter and microbial decomposers on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Two main types of object were defined to represent the decomposers and the soil organic substrates. All these objects were positioned in a 3D space. The exchange of carbon and nitrogen between these various entities was simulated. Two scenarios were tested according to the degrees of clustering of organic matter and of microorganisms. The results of simulations highlighted the effect of the ratio of accessible organic carbon to microbial carbon on the dynamics of microbial biomass and CO2 release. This ratio was determined by the number of contacts between one object representing the microbial decomposers and the surrounding objects representing the organic substrates. Diagenesis of the Amposta offshore oil reservoir (Amposta Marino C2 well, Lower Cretaceous, Valencia Trough, Spain)

Abstract Samples from the Amposta Marino C2 well (Amposta oil field) have been investigated in order to understand the origin of fractures and porosity and to reconstruct the fluid flow history of the basin prior, during and after oil migration. Three main types of fracture systems and four types of calcite cements have been identified. Fracture types A and B are totally filled by calcite cement 1 (CC1) and 2 (CC2), respectively; fracture type A corresponds to pre-Alpine structures, while type B is attributed to fractures developed during the Alpine compression (late Eocene-early Oligocene). The oxygen, carbon and strontium isotope compositions of CC2 are close to those of the host-rock, suggesting a high degree of fluid-rock interaction, and therefore a relatively closed palaeohydrogeological system. Fracture type C, developed during the Neogene extension and enlarged by subaerial exposure, tend to be filled with reddish (CS3r) and greenish (CS3g) microspar calcite sediment and blocky calcite cement type 4 (CC4), and postdated by kaolinite, pyrite, barite and oil. The CS3 generation records lower oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions and higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios than the host-limestones. These CS3 karstic infillings recrystallized early within evolved-meteoric waters having very little interaction with the host-rock. Blocky calcite cement type 4 (CC4 generation) has the lowest oxygen isotope ratio and the most radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values, indicating low fluid-rock interaction. The increasingly open palaeohydrogeological system was dominated by migration of hot brines with elevated oxygen isotope ratios into the buried karstic system. The main oil emplacement in the Amposta reservoir occurred after the CC4 event, closely related to the Neogene extensional fractures. Corrosion of CC4 (blocky calcite cement type 4) occurred prior to (or during) petroleum charge, possibly related to kaolinite precipitation from relatively acidic fluids. Barite and pyrite precipitation occurred after this corrosion. Microsatellite allelotyping differentiates chromophobe renal cell carcinomas from renal oncocytomas and identifies new genetic changes

Aims:, The diagnosis of renal oncocytomas (ROs) and chromophobe renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) based on histological features is often uncertain. To assess the value of genetic analysis in their differential diagnosis we analysed 27 ROs and 21 chromophobe RCCs by microsatellite allelotyping. Methods and results:, Markers at the short and long arms of chromosomes specifically involved in the genetic changes of the four main types of renal cancers were selected. Allelic changes were identified by automated sequencing. Allelic changes at chromosome 1p occurred in 8/26 (31%) and at chromosome 14q in 4/27 (15%) ROs. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at chromosomes 1, 2, 6, 10, 13, 17 and 21 were seen in 90%, 90%, 96%, 86%, 85%, 90% and 72% of the chromophobe RCCs, respectively. Alterations of at least three of these chromosomal sites were detected in each chromophobe RCC. In addition, we found recurrent LOH at chromosomes 9p23 (43%), 18q22 (30%), 5q22 (28%) and 8p (28%) in chromophobe RCCs. Conclusions:, Chromophobe RCCs can be differentiated from ROs by analysing specific chromosomal regions with microsatellites. [source]


CD4+ T-regulatory cells: toward therapy for human diseases

Summary T-regulatory cells (Tregs) have a fundamental role in the establishment and maintenance of peripheral tolerance. There is now compelling evidence that deficits in the numbers and/or function of different types of Tregs can lead to autoimmunity, allergy, and graft rejection, whereas an over-abundance of Tregs can inhibit anti-tumor and anti-pathogen immunity. Experimental models in mice have demonstrated that manipulating the numbers and/or function of Tregs can decrease pathology in a wide range of contexts, including transplantation, autoimmunity, and cancer, and it is widely assumed that similar approaches will be possible in humans. Research into how Tregs can be manipulated therapeutically in humans is most advanced for two main types of CD4+ Tregs: forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3)+ Tregs and interleukin-10-producing type 1 Tregs (Tr1 cells). The aim of this review is to highlight current information on the characteristics of human FOXP3+ Tregs and Tr1 cells that make them an attractive therapeutic target. We discuss the progress and limitations that must be overcome to develop methods to enhance Tregs in vivo, expand or induce them in vitro for adoptive transfer, and/or inhibit their function in vivo. Although many technical and theoretical challenges remain, the next decade will see the first clinical trials testing whether Treg-based therapies are effective in humans. [source]


Empirical orthogonal functions and related techniques in atmospheric science: A review

Abstract Climate and weather constitute a typical example where high dimensional and complex phenomena meet. The atmospheric system is the result of highly complex interactions between many degrees of freedom or modes. In order to gain insight in understanding the dynamical/physical behaviour involved it is useful to attempt to understand their interactions in terms of a much smaller number of prominent modes of variability. This has led to the development by atmospheric researchers of methods that give a space display and a time display of large space-time atmospheric data. Empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) were first used in meteorology in the late 1940s. The method, which decomposes a space-time field into spatial patterns and associated time indices, contributed much in advancing our knowledge of the atmosphere. However, since the atmosphere contains all sorts of features, e.g. stationary and propagating, EOFs are unable to provide a full picture. For example, EOFs tend, in general, to be difficult to interpret because of their geometric properties, such as their global feature, and their orthogonality in space and time. To obtain more localised features, modifications, e.g. rotated EOFs (REOFs), have been introduced. At the same time, because these methods cannot deal with propagating features, since they only use spatial correlation of the field, it was necessary to use both spatial and time information in order to identify such features. Extended and complex EOFs were introduced to serve that purpose. Because of the importance of EOFs and closely related methods in atmospheric science, and because the existing reviews of the subject are slightly out of date, there seems to be a need to update our knowledge by including new developments that could not be presented in previous reviews. This review proposes to achieve precisely this goal. The basic theory of the main types of EOFs is reviewed, and a wide range of applications using various data sets are also provided. Performance comparison between fixed length switching and variable length switching

Abstract Fixed length switching (FLS) and variable length switching (VLS) are two main types of switching architecture in high-speed input-queued switches. FLS is based on a cell-by-cell scheduling algorithm, while VLS operates on the variable packet granularity. This paper aims to make a comprehensive comparison between these two switching modes to guide the industrial design and academic research. We use stochastic models, Petri net models, analysis and simulations to investigate various performance measures of interest. Average packet latency, bandwidth utilization, segmentation and reassembly overhead, as well as packet loss are the identified key parameters that influence the outcome of the comparison. The results achieved in this paper are twofold. On one hand, it is shown that FLS enables smaller packet loss and lower packet delay in case of a short packet. On the other hand, VLS favors better bandwidth utilization, reduced implementation complexity and lower average packet delay. We recommend VLS in the conclusion since its disadvantages can be compensated by some methods, while the problems in FLS are difficult to be solved. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Information sources used by older adults for decision making about tourist and travel destinations

Abstract Over the past decade, the older market has emerged as an extremely important one because of its increased purchasing power for most consumer goods and services. The tourism and leisure industry is also targeting people aged 65 years and older, because many possess a relatively large share of discretionary money that they want to spend on travel. This has resulted in increasing attention by the mass media and the advertising industry in particular. This paper discusses the main types of information sources that are used by older adults when they make decisions about tourist and travel destinations, and particularly focuses on the importance of word-of-mouth sources and personal experiences. It also explores the influence of the mass media on trip decision making for older adults, and discusses the importance of brochures, magazines and television as information sources for older adults. Finally, it critiques the lack of senior models in advertising campaigns for travel products that are aimed at the older market. [source]


The riddle of genuine skin microrelief and wrinkles

Synopsis Wrinkles result from distinct structural changes occurring in specific parts of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. There is a need for evidenced-based cosmetology identifying and quantifying the different aspects of wrinkling. Histology allows to detect specific changes associated with particular types of wrinkles. Four main types of wrinkles can thus be recognized, including the atrophic crinkling rhytids, the permanent elastotic creases, the dynamic expression lines, and the gravitational folds. Each type usually develops on specific skin regions exhibiting distinct microanatomical characteristics. Whereas skin microrelief, expression lines and skin folds appear clearly marked at the histological level, only little dermal changes are identified under other reducible or permanent wrinkles compared with the skin immediately adjacent to them. Distinguishing different types of wrinkles brings more precision to the clinical practice. This is of importance because the different types of wrinkles respond differently to cosmetic, dermatological and surgical treatments. Résumé Les rides résultent de modifications distinctes de la structure de portions spécifiques du derme et du tissu sous-cutané. Il y a un besoin à développer encore la cosmétologie factuelle identifiant et quantifiant les différents aspects des rides. L'histologie permet de détecter des aspects spécifiques à chaque type de rides. Quatre types principaux peuvent être reconnus incluant les fines rhytides atrophiques, les rides élastosiques permanents, les rides d'expression dynamiques et les plis gravitationnels. Chaque type de ride a une propension à se développer sur des régions cutanées spécifiques caractéristiques par leur microanatomie. Alors que le microrelief cutané, les rides d'expression et les plis cutanés sont nettement visibles sous le microscope, peu d'altérations dermiques sont identifiées sous les autres rides réductibles ou permanentes. La distinction entre les différents types de rides apporte plus de précision à la pratique clinique. Ceci est important parce que les différentes rides répondent de manière distincte aux traitements cosmétiques, dermatologiques et chirurgicaux. [source]

Field evaluation of ultrasonic flowmeters for measuring water discharge in irrigation canals,

New commercial flowmeters based on acoustic technology have become popular for measuring water discharge in open channels of irrigation schemes in Spain and various other countries. There are two main types of acoustic flowmeter: transit-time and Doppler. We tested a commercial instrument of each type (a Risonic 2000 and an Argonaut-SW, respectively) in the field throughout an entire irrigation season. The instruments were installed in rectangular cross-sections of one of the secondary canals in the B-XII irrigation scheme, Spain. The discharges tested varied from 0.1 to 4,m3,s,1. To obtain reference data, we used a propeller current meter to measure the flow velocity across the test canal sections. Both the Risonic 2000 and Argonaut-SW instruments provided measurements that were highly consistent with those obtained from the propeller meter. The Argonaut-SW, mounted at the bottom of the canal, had to be reinstalled twice during the irrigation season since it was displaced by debris dragged by the flowing water. The Risonic 2000, mounted on the canal walls, operated without interruption during the entire season. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Les nouveaux débitmètres commerciaux basés sur la technologie acoustique sont désormais bien connus pour mesurer les débits dans les canaux des périmètres irrigués en Espagne et divers autres pays. Il y a deux types principaux de débitmètres acoustiques: temps de transit et Doppler. Nous avons examiné au champ pendant toute une campagne d'irrigation un instrument commercial de chaque type (un Risonic 2000 et un Argonaut-SW). Les instruments ont été installés dans des sections transversales rectangulaires d'un des canaux secondaires du périmètre irrigué B-XII en Espagne. Les débits analysés ont varié de 0.1 à 4,m3,s,1. Pour obtenir des données de référence, nous avons utilisé un moulinet courant mesurant la vitesse d'écoulement à travers les sections du canal testé. Les deux instruments Argonaut-SW et Risonic 2000 ont fourni des mesures tout à fait conformes à celles obtenues avec le moulinet. L'Argonaut-SW, monté au fond du canal, a dû être réinstallé deux fois pendant la campagne d'irrigation car il a été déplacé par des déchets transportés par l'eau. Morphological study of the lingual papillae of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) by scanning electron microscopy

Abstract Due to the scarcity of giant pandas, there are few descriptions of their morphology and even fewer of their microscopic anatomy and the ultrastructure of their organs. In this study of the complete tongue of an adult male giant panda, we describe the morphology of its lingual surface, the different types of papillae, their characteristics and topographic distribution. It was seen that there are four main types of lingual papillae: filiform, conical, fungiform and vallate. There was no sign of foliate papillae, tuberculum intermolare or sublingua. Papilla distribution was not limited to the dorsum of the tongue, but was also seen on the anterior and ventral surfaces of the tongue. In the anterior third of the midline there is a smooth area with no papillae at all. Morphology of the microgrooves and pores is similar to that observed in other mammals. The papillae share characteristics encountered in Carnivora and herbivorous species of mammals. A narrow bamboo-based diet and specialized manner of eating have together resulted in modification of the tongue of a carnivoran, giving it some characteristics typical of an herbivore. [source]

Abstract The hairs on the wings of Locusta migratoria were observed and mapped using light microscopy, as well as by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Based on their ultrastructure, we can distinguish four main types of hairs on the wings of adult L. migratoria, viz, short, medium and long hairs, and sensilla chaetica. The long hairs are located only on the ventral surface of the hindwing, whereas the other three types are present both on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of forewing and hindwing in both sexes. Medium hairs and sensilla chaetica are significantly more abundant on the dorsal surface of forewings in both females and males, than on the ventral surface, whereas the opposite was observed for short hairs (P < 0.01). No significant difference between males and females was observed in the density of any type of hairs (P > 0.1). Several dendritic branches, enveloped by a dendrite sheath, are situated in the lymph cavity of sensilla chaetica. Instead, no dendritic structure was observed in the cavity of the other three types of hairs. Immunocytochemical localization of chemosensory proteins (CSPs) was performed on ultrathin sections of hairs on wings. The antiserum against chemosensory proteins from L. migratoria (LmigCSP-II) strongly labelled sensilla chaetica, with gold granules only found in the outer sensillum lymph. In addition, the epidermal cell membrane of the wing was stained by the antiserum against LmigCSP-II. The other three types of hairs were never labelled. The results indicate that the wings might involve in contact chemoreception process. [source]


Effectiveness of maternity support belts in reducing low back pain during pregnancy: a review

Aims., This article aims to review the literature published to date on the types, current use, the biomechanical effects and adverse effects of maternity support belts for low back pain during pregnancy, to identify future research directions. Background., Lumbar/pelvic support belts are frequently recommended for the prevention and treatment of low back pain during pregnancy. Design., Systematic review. Methods., MEDLINE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and patents databases were electronically searched. Results., Maternity support belts belong to one of the four main types of maternity support garments, which are widely commercially-available. Current research showed limited evidence in support of the commercial maternity products regarding the effectiveness in the prevention and/or treatment of low back pain during pregnancy, other than that from the manufacturers. However, potential stabilisation effect of maternity support belt was demonstrated in some studies. Adverse effects reported include increased pain, fetal heart rate changes, skin irritation and discomfort. Conclusions., There is insufficient scientific evidence to conclude that wearing maternity support belts reduces pregnancy-related low back pain and/or pelvic girdle pain. Future research directions in the area of biomechanics and physiology are recommended. Relevance to clinical practice., This review provides comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of maternity support belts for the relief of low back pain during pregnancy which will facilitate healthcare professionals in providing evidence-based advice to their patients. Abstract This paper examines the issue of help devices for students in hypermedia environments according to the learning context and, more precisely, according to the cognitive processes involved in that situation. The argument is based on a criticism of the level of generality of traditional help systems which are mostly concerned with user,system interaction. Three main types of learning situations are described: learning-by-doing, learning-by-instruction, learning-by-exploring and the main cognitive processes involved in these three situations are explored. Summary Ultraviolet sun radiation can cause several deleterious effects on the skin, including photoaging and carcinogenesis. Physical protection and sunscreens are currently the two main types of photoprotection. Overall, people seem informed about the dangers of sun exposure, but sometimes they are not willing to implement the right sun-protection measures. Sunscreens are reported to be the most frequently used method worldwide, but they cannot substitute physical protection and a proportion of people do not apply them correctly. Public campaigns, together with fashion and the right role models, can still offer a lot in persuading people to change their habits towards a more sun-protected life. [source]

Fish communities in two environmentally different estuarine systems of Mexico

Mexico has two main types of coasts, an Amero-trailing-edge coast along the Gulf of Mexico and a collision coast along the Pacific, each of which determine the characteristics of their coastal lagoons. The lagoons along the Gulf of Mexico are extensive, tropical and rich in seagrass beds and mangroves, and among these Laguna Madre has 84 species of fishes. In contrast, the lagoons along the Pacific are small, closed, mostly oligohaline and usually lack seagrass beds, and among these Laguna Salinas del Padre has 19 species of fishes. This marked difference in species richness, in turn, has a direct effect on the size and value of the fisheries, as these are regional in the first case and local and seasonal in the second. Comparative morphology of male reproductive systems in Mediterranean blennies (Blenniidae)

The male reproductive organs of 16 species of Mediterranean Blenniidae (Aidablennius sphynx, Blennius ocellaris, Coryphoblennius galerita, Lipophrys adriaticus, L. canevae, L. dalmatinus, L. nigriceps, Parablennius gattorugine, P. incognitus, P. sanguinolentus, P. rouxi, P. tentacularis, P. zvonimiri, Paralipophrys trigloides, Salaria pavo and Scartella cristata) consist of pairs of testes, testicular glands, spermatic ducts, and blind pouches. Three main types of accessory sex organs were found by comparing the external morphology of the male gonads. Differences between species were observed in the volume of the testicular gland in relation to the volume of the testis and in the size and length of the spermatic ducts, and blind pouches. The anatomy of the testicular glands of all species investigated do not differ. Each gland consists of ducts that appear to be tubules which terminate at the testis periphery on one side and at the spermatic duct on the other side. Contrary to previous claims, A. sphynx has no fat body in place of the testicular gland; the gland of this species was not distinguishable from that of the other species investigated. In the Lipophrys species, in P. trigloides, and in B. ocellaris, a transition zone between testis and testicular gland is present. The testicular blind pouches empty into the spermatic ducts, into the ureter, or separately on the genital papilla. In most species, the epithelium has no or low folds, while in S. pavo it possesses high folds that nearly fill the lumen of the blind pouches. The morphological results are discussed in connection with taxonomy, ecology, and behaviour of the fishes. [source]


Histopathology, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure of the intestine of Leuciscus cephalus (L.) naturally infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala)

The histopathology, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure of the alimentary canal of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), from the River Brenta, naturally infected with the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis Müller, 1776, was studied and described. Of 62 chub examined, 54 (87%) were infected with P. laevis; the intensity of infection ranged from five to 130 parasites per host, and a density of 8 P. laevis per cm2 was common. Examination of histological material of infected chub revealed that both male and female acanthocephalans deeply penetrated all layers of the gut wall by means of their slender neck, bulb and proboscis. As a result, a capsule was formed around the bulb and proboscis on the external surface of the host intestine. In parasitized chub, four main types of reaction against the body of the acanthocephalan were recognized. Pomphorhynchus laevis caused local damage to the intestinal wall, eliciting catarrhal-erosive enteritis in the lumen and a fibroblastic-collagenous and fibro-epithelioid encapsulation in its thickness with tissue zonation according to the depth of parasite penetration. Furthermore, eosinophilic granular cells (EGC) within the inflammatory tissue were identified by immunohistochemical methods and transmission electron microscopy. [source]

Abstract Grid-based intermolecular search methods using atom,atom force fields are used to assess the structural nature of potential crystal,crystal interfacial binding associated with the examination of representative pharmaceutical formulation components, viz acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Molecular models of nano-sized molecular clusters for these two compounds, shaped in accordance with an attachment energy model of the respective particle morphologies, are constructed and used together with a grid-based search method to model the likely inter-particle interactions. The most-stable, mutual alignments of the respective nano-clusters based on their interaction energies are identified in the expectation that these are indicative of the most likely inter-particle binding configurations. The stable inter-particle binding configurations identified reveal that the number of interfacial hydrogen bonds formed between the binding particles is, potentially, an important factor in terms of the stability of inter-particle cohesion. All preferred inter-particle alignments are found to involve either the (1,0,0) or the (1,1,0) face of aspirin crystals interacting with a number of the growth forms of ascorbic acid. Four main types of interfacial hydrogen bonds are found to be associated with inter-particle binding and involve acceptor,donor interactions between hydroxyl, carbonyl, ester and lactone acceptor groups and hydroxyl donor groups. This hydrogen bonding network is found to be consistent with the surface chemistry of the interacting habit faces with, in general, the number of hydrogen bonds increasing for the more stable alignments. Development and evolution of a heterogeneous continuous media server: a case study

Abstract Media server software is significantly complicated to develop and maintain, due to the nature of the many interface aspects which must be considered. This paper provides a case study of the design, implementation, and evolution of a continuous media file server. We place emphasis on the evolution of the software and our approach to maintainability. The user interface is a major consideration, even though the server software would appear isolated from that factor. Since continuous media servers must send the raw data to a client application over a network, the protocol considerations, hardware interface, and data storage/retrieval methods are of the paramount importance. In addition, the application programmer's interface to the server facilities has an impact on both the internal design and the performance of such a server. We discuss our experiences and insight into the development of such software products within a small research-based university environment. We experienced two main types of evolutionary change: requirements changes from the limited user community and performance enhancements/corrections. Scholarly studies of the science and religion question tend to take their cue from the subjective attitudes of individual writers. A potentially more useful approach focuses instead on the logical relationship between scientific and religious statements. Such a strategy generates two main types: a compatibilist model concerned only to show that religious and scientific claims are mutually consistent and an integrationist model that posits a strong correlation between theological and scientific language. Investigation of the two models' strengths and weaknesses suggests that a compatibilist approach is more consistent with the way in which Christian language is deployed on the ground. [source]


Enhanced control of porous silicon morphology from macropore to mesopore formation

Abstract Porous silicon (PSi) is a versatile material that possesses a wide range of morphologies. There are two main types of microstructures that are widely used and well studied: branchy mesoporous silicon with pore sizes from 10 nm to 50 nm and classical macroporous silicon with pore sizes from 500 nm to 20 µm. Much less work has been done on structures with intermediate pore sizes from 100 nm to 300 nm. Applications such as immunoassays biosensing can greatly benefit from the intermediate morphology due to the larger pore openings compared to mesopores, and increased internal surface compared to classical macropores. In this work we demonstrate well-defined macropore of 150 nm diameter in average and precise control of the porous silicon morphology transition from smooth macropores to branchy mesopores on one substrate with one electrolyte. Government engagement with non-state providers of water and sanitation services

Abstract Increasingly, governments in developing countries recognise that the public sector alone cannot provide adequate water and sanitation services to all. Non-state providers (NSPs) including both formal and informal private providers, as well as civil society institutions, also have important roles to play. There are clear challenges for governments intending to work with NSPs, not least of which is the institutional compatibility between bureaucratic agencies and informal water and sanitation NSPs. However, positive examples of government agencies working effectively with NSPs are emerging in many countries. Government engagement with water and sanitation NSPs can be split into five main types: recognition, dialogue, facilitation/collaboration, contracting and regulation. In many situations, a lack of formal recognition of water or sanitation NSPs is an impediment to more productive forms of engagement. There are a number of potential intervention options within each of the five types of engagement that government agencies should carefully consider when supporting the development of NSP water and sanitation services.
