Für den Verantwortungsbereich des BMVBS ist das kürzlich eingeführte Lastmodell LM1 für die Verkehrslasten auf Brücken ohne weitere Reduktionen für alle neuen Brückenbauwerke anzusetzen. Dies führt jedoch leider gerade im Bereich der Kommunen zu teilweise konservativen Ergebnissen, da die geometrischen Abmessungen von kommunalen Brücken deutlich von den "üblichen" Abmessungen von Autobahnen und Bundesstraßen abweichen können und die Belastung aus dem LM1 durch den realen Verkehr nicht erzeugt werden kann. Es werden Vorschläge präsentiert, wie bei bestimmten geometrischen Randbedingungen und abhängig vom statischen System eine weitere Abminderung des LM1 möglich ist, ohne das Sicherheitsniveau zu verlassen. Die Arbeit entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Städten Frankfurt/Main, Leipzig und Stuttgart. Adjusted Traffic Load for Bridges under Communal Responsibility Recently the traffic loads of bridges of the EC1 have been introduced in Germany under the responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. Usually the Load Model LM1 has to be used for all new bridge structures with the adjusted values of ,Q1 = 0, 8, ,Q2 = 0, 8, ,Q3 = 0. A further classification has not been defined. This makes sense for the highway bridges and federal road bridges, because usually they have longer spans where a further reduction of the ,-values is not justified. In the sphere of influence of cities and villages the situation is totally different, because many bridges are short and are buildt as single span girder bridges or single frame bridges. In case of those bridges the LM1 leads to conservative results because the geometry and the total weight and the axle weight of the real lorries are limited and cannot develop those high inner forces and moments. The authors developed a proposal for further reduction of the ,-values dependent on the geometry and the statical system of the bridge without leaving the safety level of the Eurocode. Also for strengthening existing bridges these values can be used. The development has been undertaken in colaboration with the civil engineering offices in Frankfurth/Main, Leipzig and Stuttgart. [source] PURY: a database of geometric restraints of hetero compounds for refinement in complexes with macromolecular structuresACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION D, Issue 11 2008Miha Andreja The number and variety of macromolecular structures in complex with `hetero' ligands is growing. The need for rapid delivery of correct geometric parameters for their refinement, which is often crucial for understanding the biological relevance of the structure, is growing correspondingly. The current standard for describing protein structures is the Engh,Huber parameter set. It is an expert data set resulting from selection and analysis of the crystal structures gathered in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Clearly, such a manual approach cannot be applied to the vast and ever-growing number of chemical compounds. Therefore, a database, named PURY, of geometric parameters of chemical compounds has been developed, together with a server that accesses it. PURY is a compilation of the whole CSD. It contains lists of atom classes and bonds connecting them, as well as angle, chirality, planarity and conformation parameters. The current compilation is based on CSD 5.28 and contains 1978 atom classes and 32,702 bonding, 237,068 angle, 201,860 dihedral and 64,193 improper geometric restraints. Analysis has confirmed that the restraints from the PURY database are suitable for use in macromolecular crystal structure refinement and should be of value to the crystallographic community. The database can be accessed through the web server http://pury.ijs.si/, which creates topology and parameter files from deposited coordinates in suitable forms for the refinement programs MAIN, CNS and REFMAC. In the near future, the server will move to the CSD website http://pury.ccdc.cam.ac.uk/. [source] Tracing recent invasions of the Ponto-Caspian mysid shrimp Hemimysis anomala across Europe and to North America with mitochondrial DNADIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTIONS, Issue 2 2008Asta Audzijonyte ABSTRACT The mysid crustacean Hemimysis anomala (,bloody-red shrimp') is one of the most recent participants in the invasion of European inland waters by Ponto-Caspian species. Recently the species also became established in England and the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America. Using information from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene sequences, we traced the invasion pathways of H. anomala; the inferences were enabled by the observed phylogeographical subdivision among the source area populations in the estuaries of the Ponto-Caspian basin. The data distinguish two routes to northern and western Europe used by distinct lineages. One route has been to and through the Baltic Sea and further to the Rhine delta, probably from a population intentionally introduced to a Lithuanian water reservoir from the lower Dnieper River (NW Black Sea area) in 1960. The other lineage is derived from the Danube delta and has spread across the continent up the Danube River and further through the Main,Danube canal down to the Rhine River delta. Only the Danube lineage was found in England and in North America. The two lineages appear to have met secondarily and are now found intermixed at several sites in NW Europe, including the Rhine and waters linked with the man-made Mittellandkanal that interconnects the Rhine and Baltic drainage systems. [source] Die Häufigkeit von Oenothera -Arten im westlichen MitteleuropaFEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 5-6 2003R. Wittig Professor Dr. Auf ausgewählten Industrie- und Verkehrstandorten in drei Ballungsgebieten des westlichen Mitteleuropas (Rhein-Ruhr-Gebiet: Nordrhein-Westfalen/ Deutschland; Frankfurt: Hessen/Deutschland; Oberrheingebiet: Baden-Württemberg/Deutschland und Elsass/ Frankreich) wurde in den Jahren 1999 bis 2002 an ausgewählten, Oenothera -reichen Standorten (Industriegelände, Bahngelände, Hafenanlagen) eine quantitative Bestandsaufnahme der Oenothera -Arten vorgenommen. Hierbei belegten O. biennis und O. fallax nahezu gleichrangig den ersten Platz in der Häufigkeitsliste. Mit teilweise recht deut-lichem Abstand folgen O. pycnocarpa und O. glazioviana auf den Plätzen 3 und 4. Bemerkenswer-terweise ergab eine gleichzeitig in Frankfurt durchgeführte Rasterkartierung der Oenothera -Arten die gleiche Reihenfolge dieser vier Spezies im Hinblick auf die Zahl der von ihnen besiedelten Rasterfelder. Wie der Vergleich mit älteren Arbeiten zeigt, in denen O. biennis stets als die eindeutig häufigste Art genannt wird, hat sich O. fallax offensichtlich erst in jüngster Zeit stark ausgebreitet. Frequency of species of Oenothera in Western Central Europe Between 1999 and 2002 a quantitative inventory of Oenothera species was carried out in three urban agglomeration areas in Western Central Europe [Rhine-Ruhr-Area: North Rhine-Westfalia/Germany; Frankfurt (Main) Hessen/Germany; Upper Rhine Area-Baden-Wurttemberg/Germany and Elsace/ France] in areas with a rich abundance of Oenothera (manufacturing plants, stations, docks) at selected industrial sites and locations with high volumes of traffic. Results revealed that Oenotherabiennis and O. fallax occur most frequently followed after a wide margin by Oenothera pycnocarpa and O. glazioviana in third and fourth position. It is noteworthy that a grid mapping of Oenothera species undertaken simultanously in Frankfurt revealed the same order of frequency for the four species with respect to the number of grid cells they occupy. A comparison with previous studies, which all name Oenothera biennis as the most frequently occurring species, demonstrates clearly that the high frequency of Oenothera fallax is the result of a recent development. [source] A comparison of catchment based salmonid habitat survey techniques in three river systems in Northern IrelandFISHERIES MANAGEMENT & ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2002W. C. K. O'CONNOR Three survey techniques, a fully quantitative, multivariate study; a shorter or truncated fully quantitative method and a Geographical Information System (GIS) based, semi-quantitative, survey technique, were developed to assess in-river salmonid habitats on a catchment wide basis. These methods were tested and compared on three river systems in Northern Ireland: the Blackwater, the Bush and the Main. The research indicated that the fully quantitative method generated an accurate habitat database but required a high investment in time and resources to complete. The truncated survey approach often produced an inaccurate habitat database. The semi-quantitative technique generated a more accurate habitat dataset with greater productivity and efficiency for the resources invested in the survey. [source] Influences of Aquifer Properties on Flow Dimensions in DolomitesGROUND WATER, Issue 5 2009Timotej Verbov The paper focuses on analyses and correlations of flow dimensions in different dolomite aquifers in Slovenia. Flow dimensions are obtained through the reinterpretation of 72 pumping tests with the generalized radial flow model, based on the fractional flow dimension. The average value of flow dimensions is 2.16 for all dolomites. A study of flow dimensions in individual aquifers categorized according to their lithological properties shows that higher dimensions occur in massive late-diagenetic Cordevolian and Anisian dolomites compared with bedded Main, Ba,a, and especially Lower Triassic dolomites, which contain a greater proportion of noncarbonate minerals. Partially penetrating wells have higher flow dimensions than fully penetrating wells. Flow dimensions are poorly correlated with hydraulic conductivities of fractures. When comparing the quantities of major dissolved minerals, obtained by hydrogeochemical inverse modeling, with the values of flow dimensions, the Cordevolian and Anisian dolomites are found to exhibit the highest values of both dissolved dolomite and flow dimensions, indicating that greater dissolution occurs at higher flow dimensions. For other aquifers, data points are more scattered and the correlation is mostly poor. When compared with three-dimensional fractal dimensions of fracture networks, there is no correlation with flow dimensions. However, almost all the values of flow dimensions are lower than the corresponding fractal dimensions in dolomites (average D= 2.77), possibly indicating the channeling of flow within the available space of the fracture networks, consequently reducing the flow dimensions. [source] Clinical use of the adult attachment interview in parent,infant psychotherapyINFANT MENTAL HEALTH JOURNAL, Issue 4 2004Miriam Steele This article provides an illustration of how the use of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI; George, Kaplan, & Main, 1985) can be extended beyond the research arena to its use as a clinical instrument in parent,infant psychotherapy. The article is based on the ongoing work of the Parent,Infant Project team at the Anna Freud Centre, London, where psychoanalytically trained therapists routinely administer the AAI early in the therapeutic process. In the first part of the article, we introduce the thinking behind the use of the AAI as a clinical tool and its particular relevance to the field of parent,infant psychotherapy. In the second part, we track the accruing clinical picture built up from a case example of the initial clinical sessions with a father who attended the Parent,Infant Project with his partner and two young children, and from the father's AAI. The discussion of the AAI material illustrates the distinct, yet related, interpretations of the parent,infant psychotherapist and the independent AAI coder as each made sense of the father's interview transcript. The resulting dialogue, between the psychodynamic-clinical and the attachment-research based approaches to the AAI, aims to highlight the added value the interview provides to the clinical understanding and process in parent,infant psychotherapy, which may ultimately help bridge the gap between the research and clinical domains. [source] Insights into the processing of carbon in the South Florida Cypress Wetlands: a whole-ecosystem approach using network analysisJOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY, Issue 3 2000Cristina Bondavalli Abstract Aim The aim of this research was to investigate the potential of the South Florida Cypress Wetlands as a carbon-accumulating system. Location This ecosystem is part of the Big Cypress Natural Preserve, located in the south-west part of Florida (USA) between the Mangrove Swamps that border the Gulf of Mexico and the Everglades. Methods This investigation was carried out by constructing networks of carbon exchange between the living and nonliving components that comprise this ecosystem. By means of these networks potential for carbon accumulation has been assessed by identifying and quantifying pathways for the transfer of carbon, assessing the efficiency between trophic levels, and evaluating the importance of material cycling. These analyses are commonly referred to as network analysis. Results Results obtained show that dependency on detritus by higher trophic levels is rather low and so is the trophic efficiency. Yet, less than 10% of the carbon that flows through the system is recycled and the magnitude of internal ascendency reaches only 40% of the total system ascendency. Main,conclusions All these results support the hypothesis that the South Florida Cypress Wetlands are predominately flow-through in nature and that carbon accumulation in this environment is noticeable. [source] Analysis of plant species diversity with respect to island characteristics on the Channel Islands, CaliforniaJOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY, Issue 3 2000Aaron Moody Abstract Aim Species richness of native, endemic, and exotic plant groups is examined relative to island area, disturbance history, geological history, and other physical characteristics. Of particular interest are the biogeographic factors that underlie (a) differences in species-area and species-isolation relationships between plant groups; and (b) adherence or departure of individual islands and/or plant groups from expected patterns. Location The eight Channel Islands lie along the continental margin between the U.S./Mexico border and Point Conception, CA. They range in size from 2.6 to 249 km2, and are located from 20 to 100 km off the coast. The islands are known for their high degree of plant endemism, and they have undergone a long history of human occupation by indigenous peoples, followed by over a century of intensive grazing and other biotic disturbances. Methods The study is based on linear regression and residual analysis. Cases where individual islands and/or specific plant groups do not adhere to patterns expected under species-area and species-isolation paradigms, are evaluated with respect to other island characteristics that are not captured by considering only island size and isolation. Results All three plant groups exhibit strong, positive relationships between species richness and island size. For native species, the variance that remains after consideration of island size is largely explained by island isolation. For exotic species, residuals from the species-area relationship are unrelated to isolation. For endemic species, residuals from the species-area relationship are negatively related to isolation. Several islands are outliers for endemic and exotic species, for which richness values are not explained by either island area or isolation. Main,conclusions Species-area and species-isolation relationships for native, endemic, and exotic plant groups differ in accordance with hypothesized differences in the biogeographic factors that govern species diversity for these three groups. Most notably, endemic richness increases with isolation, suggesting the influence of this variable on processes of speciation and relictualism. These general relationships persist despite a long and varied history of human activity on the islands. Analysis of residuals suggests that deviations from expected patterns correspond to island-specific biogeographic factors. It is hypothesized that primary among these factors are land-use history, island environmental characteristics, and community-type richness. Ahmad-Zaluki Abstract:, This paper investigates the long run share price performance of 454 Malaysian IPOs during the period 1990 to 2000. In contrast with developed markets, significant overperformance is found for equally-weighted event time CARs and buy-and-hold returns using two market benchmarks, though not for value-weighted returns or using a matched company benchmark. The significant abnormal performance also disappears under the calendar-time approach using the Fama-French (1993) three factor model. While the long run performance of Main and Second Board IPOs does not differ, the year of listing, issue proceeds and initial returns are found to be performance-related. [source] Seasonal inventory and status of flying insects, in Kihansi Gorge, TanzaniaAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2009Edward K. Msyani Abstract Sampling of flying insects in Kihansi Gorge was conducted in six micro-habitats namely Lower, Upper, Main, Mid-Gorge and Mhalala Spray Wetlands and adjacent forest. The four traps used were, malaise, pitfall, light and artificial substrate sampler, besides sweep netting and beating. In the wet season, 65,549 flying insects (65.13%) were recorded when compared to 35,633 flying insects (34.87%) in dry season. At its peak, 29,783 flying insects (29.15%) were recorded at the start of wet season (December 2004). The abundance value was significant (,2 = 1794.98, d.f. = 5, P , 0.001). The favourable weather condition at the beginning of the wet season might have triggered emergence of high numbers of winged insects like ants, to facilitate migration through dispersal and reproduction, and some aquatic insects (Plecoptera, Odonata and Trichoptera) moulted and entered into terrestrial life to raise terrestrial abundance. No association was recorded between abundance of flying insects and amphibians (Kihansi Spray Toad; Nectophynoides asperginis), for Mid-Gorge and Main Spray Wetlands (r = ,0.71, n = 4, P = 0.147 and r = ,0.69, n = 5, P = 0.201) respectively. Résumé On a récolté des échantillons d'insectes volants dans la Kihansi Gorge, dans six micro-habitats à savoir les Lower, Upper, Main, et Mid-Gorge et les Mhalala Spray Wetlands ainsi que dans les forêts voisines. Les quatre pièges utilisés étaient le piège malaise, le piège-fosse ou Barber, le piège lumineux et l'échantillonnage sur substrat artificiel, auxquels s'ajoutaient le filet et la frappe. En saison des pluies, 65.549 insectes volants (65,13%) ont été rapportés, comparéà 35.633 (34,87%) en saison sèche. Le maximum a été atteint avec 29.783 insectes volants (29,15%) capturés au début de la saison des pluies, en décembre 2004. L'abondance avait une valeur significative (,2 = 1 794,98, d.f. = 5, P , 0.001). [source] Sodium Bicarbonate versus Sodium Chloride and Oral N-Acetylcysteine for the Prevention of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in Advanced Chronic Kidney DiseaseJOURNAL OF INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY, Issue 6 2009LINDA SHAVIT M.D. Introduction: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired acute kidney injury. Multiple clinical studies have proposed several preventive strategies. Aims: To examine the efficacy of sodium bicarbonate compared with sodium chloride and oral N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for preventive hydration after cardiac catheterization. Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-center trial. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage III,IV undergoing cardiac catheterization were allocated to receive either an infusion of 0.9% sodium chloride and oral NAC or 154 mEq/L sodium bicarbonate. Main: Outcome measure CI-AKI, defined as an increase of 25% or 0.3 mg/dL or more in plasma creatinine within 2 days of contrast administration. Results: Ninety-three patients were allocated to one of the two groups: 42 patients in the saline plus NAC group and 51 patients in the bicarbonate group. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the most important clinical and procedural characteristics. Baseline plasma creatinine levels, estimated glomerular filtration rate, incidence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and contrast medium volume were similar. Mean plasma creatinine concentration was 1.76 ± 0.54 mg/dL in the saline and NAC group and 1.9 ± 1 mg/dL in the bicarbonate group (P = 0.23). The rate of CI-AKI was 9.8% in the bicarbonate group and 8.4% in the saline plus NAC group. No patient required renal replacement therapy. Conclusion: Hydration with sodium bicarbonate is not more effective than hydration with sodium chloride and oral NAC for prophylaxis of CI-AKI in patients with CKD stage III,IV undergoing cardiac catheterization. [source] A Customizable Instrument for Measuring the Mechanical Properties of Thin Biomedical MembranesMACROMOLECULAR MATERIALS & ENGINEERING, Issue 10 2005Gracián Triviño Abstract Summary: A customized instrument has been developed as part of multidisciplinary research work relating to the development of a biodegradable vascular scaffold. This instrument aims to measure the mechanical properties of elastic and viscoelastic thin membranes with tissue engineering applications. Uniform and omni-directional pressure is applied on the whole membrane which is uniformly clamped and submerged into a liquid medium. The mechanical testing described in this study is focused on the stress-strain curves of polycaprolactone (PCL) films after different treatments. The influence of Dulbecco's modified Eagle's culture medium, L929 fibroblast culture, NaOH treatment and film thickness on the mechanical properties of PCL films was evaluated after different times. These studies show that the PCL degradation process is influenced by immersion in the culture medium, inducing an increment in the slope of the pressure-dilation curve which is indicative of an increase in the polymer stiffness. On the other hand, long NaOH treatments make PCL films have more flexible behavior. [source] Hybridization and Rorippa austriaca (Brassicaceae) invasion in GermanyMOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 7 2003W. Bleeker Abstract Introgressive hybridization between the invasive Rorippa austriaca and the native R. sylvestris in Germany has been studied using chloroplast DNA (trnL intron) and amplified fragment length polymorphism. Three hybrid zones between the invasive and native species were located in the Ruhr Valley (Mülheim) and at the River Main near Würzburg (Randersacker, Winterhausen). In each hybrid zone hybridization was indicated by additivity of region-specific amplified fragment length polymorphism markers proving independent hybridization events. The hybrids were either morphologically intermediate (R. × armoracioides) or were close to R. sylvestris. The trnL intron of R. austriaca is characterized by a species-specific deletion. This diagnostic chloroplast marker of R. austriaca was detected in three individuals of R. sylvestris providing evidence for introgression of the invasive chloroplast into the native species. Bidirectional introgression of R. austriaca markers into R. sylvestris and of R. sylvestris markers into R. austriaca was detected in the amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis. Some of the invasive R. austriaca populations showed high within-population variation. A possible association among introgression, within-population variation and invasion success is discussed. The morphologically intermediate hybrid R. × armoracioides is currently spreading in northern Germany. It forms large populations without its parent species R. austriaca and R. sylvestris. It is concluded that hybridization between invasive R. austriaca and native R. sylvestris may lead to the evolution of a new invasive species R. × armoracioides. [source] Interventions for preventing obesity in childhood.OBESITY REVIEWS, Issue 3 2001A systematic review Abstract Background The prevalence of obesity and overweight is increasing worldwide. Obesity in children impacts on their health in both short- and long-term. Obesity prevention strategies are poorly understood. Objective To assess the effectiveness of interventions designed to prevent obesity in childhood. Search strategy Electronic databases were searched from January 1985 to October 1999. Selection criteria Data from randomized control trials and non-randomized trials with concurrent control group were included. A priori, studies with follow up of 1 year minimum were selected however, this was subsequently amended to include studies with a minimum follow up of three months. Data collection & analysis Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed study quality. Main results Seven studies were included, three long-term (>1 years) and four short-term (>3 months and <1 years). The studies included were diverse in terms of study design and quality, target population, theoretical underpinning of intervention approach, and outcome measures. As such, it was not appropriate to combine study findings using statistical methods. Conclusions Two of the long-term studies (one focused on dietary education and physical activity vs. control, and the other only on dietary education vs. control), resulted in a reduction in the prevalence on obesity, but the third, which focused on dietary education and physical activity, found no effect. Of the four short-term studies, three focused simply on physical activity/reduction of sedentary behavious vs. control. Two of these studies resulted in a reduction in the prevalence of obesity in intervention groups compared with control groups, and another study found a non-significant reduction. The fourth study focused on dietary education and physical activity, and did not find an effect on obesity, but did report a reduction in fat intake. Overall, the findings of the review suggest that currently there is limited quality data on the effectiveness of obesity prevention programmes and as such no generalizable conclusions can be drawn. The need for well-designed studies that examine a range of interventions remains a priority. [source] Horizontal Strain Rate in Relation to Vein Formation of the Hishikari Gold Deposits, Southern Kyushu, JapanRESOURCE GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2001Tadakazu UTO Abstract: The Hishikari deposits comprise the Honko (Main), Yamada, and Sanjin deposits. The horizontal strain in the direction (approx. N40°W normal to the general NE-SW strike of the Hishikari vein system was calculated, based on the measured total vein widths to the distance along three crosscuts. Veins were assumed to accompany no significant fault displacement in the calculation. Veins in the eastern and the middle parts of the Honko-Sanjin deposits spatially occupy 3. 2% and 1. 3%, respectively, and veins in the Yamada deposit occupy 6. 7%. Significant local variation of strain is observed in some areas. Reported K-Ar ages on adularia-quartz veins indicate the duration of vein opening to be 2. 6 × 105 yr in the Honko-Sanjin deposits and 5. 9 × 105 yr in the Yamada deposit. Horizontal strain rates were calculated to be 5. 0,12 × 10 -8 yr -1through the Hishikari deposits. The calculated strain rates at the Hishikari deposits are roughly comparable to the regional horizontal strain rate in the Recent. Widespread extensional movement in southern Kyushu seems to have been able to provide sufficient strain for the formation of the Hishikari deposits, rather than contribution of local movements. Beijersbergen The current study examined whether adolescents' attachment representations were associated with differences in emotion regulation during the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI; C. George, N. Kaplan, & M. Main, 1996) and during a mother,adolescent conflict interaction task (Family Interaction Task [FIT]; J. P. Allen et al., 2003). Participants were one hundred and fifty-six 14-year-old adolescents. Dismissing adolescents showed less interbeat interval (IBI) reactivity (indicating less stress) during the AAI than secure adolescents. However, during the FIT, dismissing adolescents showed more IBI reactivity. No differences in physiological reactivity were found between individuals with resolved or unresolved loss or trauma during the AAI or FIT. The results indicate that dismissing adolescents may effectively use a defensive strategy during the AAI but less so in direct conflict interaction with their attachment figure. [source] Attachment from Infancy to Early Adulthood in a High-Risk Sample: Continuity, Discontinuity, and Their CorrelatesCHILD DEVELOPMENT, Issue 3 2000Nancy S. Weinfield This study explores the stability of attachment security and representations from infancy to early adulthood in a sample chosen originally for poverty and high risk for poor developmental outcomes. Participants for this study were 57 young adults who are part of an ongoing prospective study of development and adaptation in a high-risk sample. Attachment was assessed during infancy by using the Ainsworth Strange Situation (Ainsworth & Wittig) and at age 19 by using the Berkeley Adult Attachment Interview (George, Kaplan, & Main). Possible correlates of continuity and discontinuity in attachment were drawn from assessments of the participants and their mothers over the course of the study. Results provided no evidence for significant continuity between infant and adult attachment in this sample, with many participants transitioning to insecurity. The evidence, however, indicated that there might be lawful discontinuity. Analyses of correlates of continuity and discontinuity in attachment classification from infancy to adulthood indicated that the continuous and discontinuous groups were differentiated on the basis of child maltreatment, maternal depression, and family functioning in early adolescence. These results provide evidence that although attachment has been found to be stable over time in other samples, attachment representations are vulnerable to difficult and chaotic life experiences. Similarities and differences between these disorders, however, remain unclear. This study compares processes of emotion regulation in adolescents and young adults (15 to 25 years old) with substance dependence (SD) or eating disorders (ED). One hundred and thirteen SD, 50 ED and 86 non-clinical subjects (NC), recruited in four French and Swiss locations, completed a self-report questionnaire of emotion regulation strategies. This questionnaire addresses the subjects' relationships, concerning past and present family, and refers to Main's (1990) concept of primary strategy (balanced activation and deactivation of attachment behaviours), and of secondary strategies (hyperactivation or excessive deactivation of the attachment system). Participants were also questioned in structured interviews, about life events and DSM-IV classification criteria. SD reported more adverse events than ED and NC. SD and ED reported using fewer primary strategies than NC, and SD had secondary strategies that were different from those of ED. Patients with eating disorders reported more hyperactivation, and SD reported more deactivation of the attachment system. It is hypothesized that while subjects with SD and ED have in common poorly regulated strategies, they differ in the way they process emotion or relationship-related information. Drüe Abstract AMDAR (Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay) automated weather reports from commercial aircraft provide an increasing amount of input data for numerical weather prediction models. Previous studies have investigated the quality of AMDAR data. Few of these studies, however, have revealed indications of systematic errors dependent upon the aircraft type. Since different airlines use different algorithms to generate AMDAR reports, it has remained unclear whether a dependency on the aircraft type is caused by physical properties of the aircraft or by different data processing algorithms. In the present study, a special AMDAR dataset was used to investigate the physical type-dependent errors of AMDAR reports. This dataset consists of AMDAR measurements by Lufthansa aircraft performing over 300 landings overall at Frankfurt Rhein/Main (EDDF/FRA) on 22 days in 2004. All of this data has been processed by the same software, implying that influences from different processing algorithms should not be expected. From the comparison of single descents to hourly averaged vertical profiles, it is shown that temperature measurements by different aircraft types can have systematic differences of up to 1 K. In contrast, random temperature errors of most types are estimated to be less than 0.3 K. It is demonstrated that systematic deviations in AMDAR wind measurements can be regarded as an error vector, which is fixed to the aircraft reference system. The largest systematic deviations in wind measurements from different aircraft types (more than 0.5 m s,1) were found to exist in the longitudinal direction (i.e. parallel to the flight direction). In such heterogeneous and distributed environments, selecting the best resource to run a job is a complex task. The solutions currently employed still present numerous challenges and one of them is how to let users know when a job will finish. Consequently, reserve in advance remains unavailable. This article presents a new approach, which makes predictions for job execution time in Grid by applying the case-based reasoning paradigm. The work includes the development of a new case retrieval algorithm involving relevance sequence and similarity degree calculations. The prediction model is part of a multi-agent system that selects the best resource of a computational Grid to run a job. Agents representing candidate resources for job execution make predictions in a distributed and parallel manner. The technique presented here can be used in Grid environments at operation time to assist users with batch job submissions. Abstract This article reports about the ion sheath thickness variation occurring in front of a negatively biased plate immersed in the target plasma region of a double plasma device. The target plasma is produced due to the local ionization of neutral gas by the high energetic electrons coming from the source region (main discharge region). It is observed that for an increase in cathode voltage (filament bias voltage) in the source region, the ion flux into the plate increases. As a result, the sheath at the plate contracts. Again, for an increase in source anode voltage (magnetic cage bias), the ion flux to the plate decreases. As a result, the sheath expands at the plate. The ion sheath formed at the separation grid of the device is found to expand for an increase in cathode voltage and it contracts for an increase in the anode voltage of the main discharge region. One important observation is that the applied anode bias can control the Bohm speed of the ions towards the separation grid. Furthermore, it is observed that the ion current collected by the separation grid is independent of changes in plasma density in the diffusion region but is highly dependent on the source plasma parameters. Leichtweis The efficacy of glutathione (GSH) in protecting ischaemia-reperfusion (I-R) induced cardiac dysfunction and myocardial oxidative stress was studied in open-chest, stunned rat heart model. Female Sprague,Dawley rats were randomly divided into three experimental groups: (1) GSH-depletion, by injection of buthionine sulphoxamine (BSO, 4 mmol kg,1, i.p.) 24 h prior to I-R, (2) BSO injection (4 mmol kg,1, i.p.) in conjunction with acivicin (AT125, 0.05 mmol kg,1, i.v.) infusion 1 h prior to I-R, and (3) control (C), receiving saline treatment. Each group was further divided into I-R, with surgical occlusion of the main left coronary artery (LCA) for 30 min followed by 20 min reperfusion, and sham. Myocardial GSH content and GSH : glutathione disulphide (GSSG) ratio were decreased by ,50% (P < 0.01) in both BSO and BSO + AT125 vs. C. Ischaemia-reperfusion suppressed GSH in both left and right ventricles of C (P < 0.01) and left ventricles of BSO and BSO + AT125 (P < 0.05). Contractility (+dP/dt and ,dP/dt) in C heart decreased 55% (P < 0.01) after I and recovered 90% after I-R, whereas ±dP/dt in BSO decreased 57% (P < 0.01) with ischaemia and recovered 76 and 84% (P < 0.05), respectively, after I-R. For BSO + AT125, ±dP/dt were 64 and 76% (P < 0.01) lower after ischaemia, and recovered only 67 and 61% (P < 0.01) after I-R. Left ventricular systolic pressure in C, BSO and BSO + AT125 reached 95 (P > 0.05) 87 and 82% (P < 0.05) of their respective sham values after I-R. Rate-pressure double product was 11% (P > 0.05) and 25% (P < 0.05) lower in BSO and BSO + AT125, compared with Saline, respectively. BSO and BSO + AT125 rats demonstrated significantly lower liver GSH and heart Mn superoxide dismutase activity than C rats after I-R. These data indicate that GSH depletion by inhibition of its synthesis and transport can exacerbate cardiac dysfunction inflicted by in vivo I-R. Part of the aetiology may involve impaired myocardial antioxidant defenses and whole-body GSH homeostasis. [source] |
