Hypoadrenocorticism in a cat

Primary hypoadrenocorticism was diagnosed in an eight-year-old neutered male cat. The predominant presenting complaint was dysphagia. Other historical signs included lethargy, weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, muscle weakness and occasional vomiting. The signs had waxed and waned over the two months before presentation and had improved when the cat was treated with enrofloxacin and prednisolone by the referring veterinarian. On referral, dehydration, depression and poor bodily condition were found on physical examination. Results of initial laboratory tests revealed mild anaemia, hyperkalaemia, hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia and elevations in serum creatinine and creatine kinase. The diagnosis of primary adrenocortical insufficiency was established on the basis of results of an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test and endogenous plasma ACTH determination. Initial therapy for hypoadrenocorticism included intravenous administration of 0,9 per cent saline and dexamethasone, and oral fludrocortisone acetate. Within one week the cat was clinically normal and two years later was still alive and well on fludrocortisone acetate treatment only. [source]


Preemptive effect of nucleus of the solitary tract stimulation on amygdaloid kindling in freely moving cats

Summary Purpose:, The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) is a primary site where vagal afferents terminate. The aim of this study was to analyze the preemptive effect of NTS electrical stimulation on daily amygdaloid kindling (AK) in freely moving cats. Methods:, Seven adult male cats were used. Bipolar electrodes were stereotaxically implanted into both amygdalae, lateral geniculate bodies, hippocampi, and prefrontal cortices. In addition, a bipolar stainless steel electrode was implanted in the left NTS. Cats were recorded under the following experimental conditions: The NTS was stimulated for 6 days before the initiation of AK (1 min on/5 min off, 1 h total). AK was performed by stimulating the amygdala every 24 h (1 s, 60 Hz, 1 ms) until behavioral stage VI was reached. Results:, The number of stimulations to reach stage VI in control animals was 23.4 ± 3.7, in lateral tegmental field (LTF) animals was 17.0 ± 2.1 days. Animals subjected to preemptive NTS stimulation showed a significant increase (53.8 ± 5.9). In addition, behavioral development was retarded, with an increase in the number of stimulations required to reach stage III. In this group, overall kindling development was delayed, and amygdaloid afterdischarge duration did not show a progressive increase as was observed in the control group. Discussion:, Our results indicate that preemptive NTS electrical stimulation interferes with epileptogenesis. This anticonvulsive effect could be related to the activation of certain structures that inhibit seizure development. Therefore, results suggest that NTS mediates the anticonvulsive effect of vagus nerve stimulation. [source]


The Effect of CO2 and KTP laser on the cat saccule and utricle

Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis: To assess the potential carbon dioxide (CO2) and potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser-related trauma to the saccule and utricle in a cat model. Study Design: Basic science experiment utilizing cat model. Methods: Twelve adult male cats were divided into two groups,CO2 and KTP,to assess the potential saccule and/or utricle trauma with direct discharge of laser energy into the vestibule after the stapes was removed. Both groups were subdivided to assess the effects with acute sacrifice and three-month survival. Bone conduction auditory brain-stem response thresholds were used to monitor auditory function. Clinical observation was used to monitor vestibular function. The temporal bones were harvested, processed, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) in all animals with the uninvolved side serving as the control. Results: None of the animals demonstrated changes in bone conduction auditory brain-stem responses. None of the animals in the survival group demonstrated clinical vestibular dysfunction. Saccular and utricular wall rupture was observed in all animals sacrificed acutely. None of the saccular and utricular wall ruptures were of a size and location that could be attributed to laser trauma, and none of the saccular and utricular wall ruptures were associated with neuroepithelial trauma. Conclusions: There is no evidence of a difference between the CO2 and KTP laser in potential laser-related trauma. Using bone-conducting auditory brain-stem response threshold and clinical monitoring of vestibular function, there was no evidence of clinical auditory or vestibular dysfunction. Localizing the X-linked orange colour phenotype using feline resource families

Summary Many genes influencing mammalian coat colours are well conserved. While genes responsible for pelage phenotypes in one species provide strong evidence for a candidate gene in a different species, the X-linked orange phenotype of the domestic cat is unique within mammals. The orange locus (O) undergoes X-inactivation, producing females that express both wildtype black (wt) and orange (variant) phenotypes when heterozygous (tortoiseshell). The orange locus has not yet been localized on the X chromosome. Tortoiseshell male cats have been identified but have been shown to be sex chromosome trisomies (XXY). To localize the cat orange locus, 10 feline-derived X-linked microsatellites were analysed in two extended cat pedigrees consisting of 79 and 55 individuals, respectively, segregating for the orange phenotype. Linkage analyses excluded close association of orange in the vicinity of the nine informative X-linked microsatellites. One marker was not polymorphic within either family. Several markers suggested exclusion (Z < ,2.0) at distances of 7.5,33 cM. Exclusion analyses suggested a possible location for orange a 14 cM region near Xcen. Recombination distances of markers in the segregating feline pedigrees were reduced as compared with the feline interspecies backcross family. Thus, the presented pedigrees may be useful as reference families for the domestic cat because more accurate recombination rates for domestic cats can be determined. [source]
