In this work, we observed a humidity-induced reversible change between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in a new type of a cobalt octacyanoniobate based magnet in the high-humidity region. This humidity response is caused by the adsorption and desorption of non-coordinated water (so-called zeolitic water) molecules in the interstitial site. Such a phenomenon is achieved by the structural flexibility of an octacyanometalate-based magnet. [source] Apocrustacyanin C1 crystals grown in space and on earth using vapour-diffusion geometry: protein structure refinements and electron-density map comparisonsACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION D, Issue 7 2003Jarjis Habash Models of apocrustacyanin C1 were refined against X-ray data recorded on Bending Magnet 14 at the ESRF to resolutions of 1.85 and 2,Å from a space-grown and an earth-grown crystal, respectively, both using vapour-diffusion crystal-growth geometry. The space crystals were grown in the APCF on the NASA Space Shuttle. The microgravity crystal growth showed a cyclic nature attributed to Marangoni convection, thus reducing the benefits of the microgravity environment, as reported previously [Chayen et al. (1996), Q. Rev. Biophys.29, 227,278]. A subsequent mosaicity evaluation, also reported previously, showed only a partial improvement in the space-grown crystals over the earth-grown crystals [Snell et al. (1997), Acta Cryst. D53, 231,239], contrary to the case for lysozyme crystals grown in space with liquid,liquid diffusion, i.e. without any major motion during growth [Snell et al. (1995), Acta Cryst. D52, 1099,1102]. In this paper, apocrustacyanin C1 electron-density maps from the two refined models are now compared. It is concluded that the electron-density maps of the protein and the bound waters are found to be better overall for the structures of apocrustacyanin C1 studied from the space-grown crystal compared with those from the earth-grown crystal, even though both crystals were grown using vapour-diffusion crystal-growth geometry. The improved residues are on the surface of the protein, with two involved in or nearby crystal lattice-forming interactions, thus linking an improved crystal-growth mechanism to the molecular level. The structural comparison procedures developed should themselves be valuable for evaluating crystal-growth procedures in the future. [source] Microbiological and clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction for two treatment options in the edentulous lower jaw after 10 years of functionCLINICAL ORAL IMPLANTS RESEARCH, Issue 3 2005Marc Quirynen Abstract Background: Long-term data on microbiological and clinical outcome as well as on patient satisfaction after implant therapy in the edentulous mandible are limited. Especially comparisons between fixed full prostheses (FFPs) and overdentures (ODs), or between anchoring systems for the latter are scarce. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate both of these parameters at the 10-year follow-up in a group of fully edentulous patients rehabilitated via an OD or a FFP (the latter to allow inter-group comparison). Material and methods: A total of 37 fully edentulous patients (25 ODs, 12 FFPs, age at implant installation ranged from 36 to 85 years) participated in this study. All subjects received their implants (Brånemark System®, Nobel Biocare AB, Gothenburg, Sweden) 10 years previously. For the ODs different attachment systems (bar, magnets, ball) had been applied that allowed a further intra-group comparison. At the follow-up visit, 10 years after the abutment insertion, a series of periodontal parameters were recorded, long-cone radiographs were taken and subgingival plaque samples were collected for analysis using checkerboard DNA,DNA hybridization. The clinical and radiographic data were recorded at abutment connection and after 1 and 10 years. Results: After 10 years of loading, mean plaque and bleeding indices and changes in attachment or marginal bone level were not significantly different, neither between the OD and FFP group, nor within the OD group. The marginal bone loss between abutment connection and year 10 was 0.86 and 0.73 mm for OD and FFP groups, respectively. The subgingival microbiota at implant sites from all (sub)-groups was comparable, with low numbers of DNA counts (±10 × 105) but high detection frequencies of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (>90%), Porphyromonas gingivalis (>85%) and Tannerella forsythensis (30%). The composition of the subgingival microbiota was influenced by probing depth and bleeding tendency. Patient satisfaction was very high for both types of prosthetic rehabilitation. The FFP group scored only slightly better for chewing comfort and general satisfaction. Conclusion: These data indicate that from the clinical and microbiological standpoint, as well as patient satisfaction, both an OD and a FFP offer a favourable long-term outcome. Résumé Les données à long terme de la guérison clinique et microbiologique ainsi que la satisfaction du patient après un traitement par implants dans la mandibule édentée sont limitées. Essentiellement des comparaisons entre les prothèses fixées complètes et les prothèses fixées amovibles ou entre les systèmes d'ancrage pour ces derniers sont rares. Cette étude a eu pour but d'évaluer ces paramètres après dix ans dans un groupe de patients complètement édentés qui avaient été soignés par une prothèse amovible ou fixée (cette dernière pour permettre la comparaison intergroupes). Trente-sept patients édentés [25 prothèses amovibles (OD), douze prothèses fixées (FFP), l'âge au moment du placement des implants était de 36 à 85 ans] ont participéà cette étude. Tous les sujets avaient reçu des implants Brånemark® 10 ans auparavant. Pour les prothèses amovibles, différents types d'attache (balle, aimant) avaient été utilisés, ce qui permettaient une comparaison intragroupe supplémentaire. Lors de la visite du suivi, dix ans après l'insertion des implants, une série de paramètres parodontaux ont été enregistrés, des radiographies par long cône prises et des échantillons de plaque sous-gingivale prélevés pour l'analyse utilisant l'hybridisation ADN-ADN échiquier. Les données cliniques et radiographiques ont été enregistrées au moment de la connexion de l'implant et après une et dix années. Dix années après la mise en charge, les indices de plaque et de saignement et les variations dans l'attache ou les niveaux osseux marginaux n'étaient pas significativement différents ni entre les groupes OD et FFP ni à l'intérieur du groupe OD. La perte osseuse marginale entre les connexions des piliers et dix ans après étaient respectivement de 0,86 et 0,73 mm pour les groupes OD et FFP. La flore sous-gingivale au niveau des implants pour tous les groupes et sous-groupes étaient semblables avec de faibles comptages ADN (±10 × 105) mais des fréquences de détection importantes de A. actinomycetemcomitans (>90%), P. gingivalis (>85%) et T.forsythensis (30%). La composition de la flore sous-gingivale a été influencée par la profondeur de la poche et la tendance au saignement. La satisfaction du patient était très élevée pour les deux types de prothèses. Le groupe FFP n'était qu'un petit peu meilleur pour le confort à la mastication et la satisfaction générale. Ces données indiquent que d'un point de vue clinique et microbiologique autant que d'un point de vue de satisfaction du patient les prothèses amovibles et fixées sont favorables à long terme. Zusammenfassung Hintergrund: Die Langzeitresultate über den mikrobiologischen und klinischen Verlauf und über die Zufriedenheit der Patienten nach Implantatversorgung im zahnlosen Unterkiefer sind limitiert. Im Speziellen sind Vergleiche zwischen festsitzenden totalen Brücken und Hybridprothesen und den verschiedenen Befestigungssystemen für Hybridprothesen selten. Ziel: Das Ziel der Studie war, beide Parameter anlässlich der Nachuntersuchung nach 10 Jahren bei einer Gruppe von zahnlosen Patienten, welche mit einer Hybridprothese oder mit einer festsitzenden Brücke wiederhergestellt worden waren, auszuwerten (bei den Hybridprothesen sollten auch Vergleiche innerhalb der Gruppe durchgeführt werden). Material und Methoden: Insgesamt nahmen 37 zahnlose Patienten an der Studie teil (25 Hybridprothesen (OD), 12 festsitzende Prothesen (FFP), Alter zum Zeitpunkt der Implantation 36 bis 85 Jahre). Alle Subjekte hatte vor 10 Jahren ihre Implantate erhalten (Brånemark System®, Nobel Biocare, Schweden). Bei den Hybridprothesen waren verschiedene Befestigungssysteme verwendet worden (Steg, Magnet, Kugeln). Dies erlaubte Vergleiche innerhalb der Gruppe. Bei der Nachuntersuchung 10 Jahre nach Einsetzten der Prothetikteile wurden parodontale Parameter aufgenommen, Röntgenbilder mit der Langkonustechnik angefertigt und subgingivale Plaqueproben zur Analyse mittels Ceckerboard DNA,DNA Hybridisierung entnommen. Die klinischen und radiologischen Daten wurden beim Einsetzten der Prothetikteile und nach 1 und 10 Jahren aufgenommen. Resultate: Nach 10 Jahren Belastung bestanden weder zwischen der OD und FFP Gruppe, noch innerhalb der OD Gruppe statistisch signifikante Unterschiede im mittleren Plaque- und Blutungsindex und in der Attachment- und marginalen Knochenhöhe. Der Verlust an marginalem Knochen zwischen der Montage der Prothetikteile und nach 10 Jahren betrug 0.86 mm für die OD Gruppe und 0.73 mm für die FFP Gruppe. Die subgingivale Flora war bei allen Implantatstellen der (Sub-) Gruppen vergleichbar. Es bestand eine geringe Anzahl an DNA Zählungen (±10 × 105) aber eine hohe Entdeckungsfrequenz für A. actinomycetemcomitans (>90%), P. gingivalis (>85%) und T. forsythensis (30%). Die Zusammensetzung der subgingivalen Mirkoflora wurde durch die Sondierungstiefe und die Blutungstendenz beeinflusst. Die Zufriedenheit der Patienten war für beide Arten der prothetischen Wiederherstellung sehr hoch. Die FFP Gruppe erreichte nur geringfügig bessere Werte bezüglich Kaukomfort und genereller Zufriedenheit. Schlussfolgerung: Diese Daten zeigen, dass sowohl vom klinischen und mikrobiologischen Standpunkt aus als auch seitens der Patientenzufriedenheit die Hybridprothese und die festsitzende totale Brücke gute Langzeitresultate zeigen. Resumen Antecedentes: Los datos a largo plazo sobre los resultados microbiológicos y clínicos al igual que la satisfacción del paciente tras la terapia de implantes en la mandíbula edéntula son limitados. Son especialmente escasas las comparaciones entre prótesis fija completa y sobredentaduras, o entre sistemas de anclaje. Intención: Este estudio se intentó para evaluar ambos parámetros en el control de seguimiento de los 10 años en un grupo de pacientes totalmente edéntulos rehabilitados por medio de una sobredentadura o una prótesis completa fija (la última para permitir comparaciones intergrupo). Material y métodos: Un total de 37 pacientes totalmente edéntulos (25 sobredentaduras (OD), 12 prótesis completas fijas (FFP), la edad en el momento de la implantación varió entre 36 a 85 años) participaron en este estudio. Todos los sujetos recibieron sus implantes (Brånemark System®, Nobel Biocare, Suecia) 10 años antes. Para las sobredentaduras se aplicaron diferentes sistemas de anclaje (barras, imanes, bolas) lo que permitieron una ulterior comparación intragrupo. En la visita de seguimiento, 10 años tras la colocación de los pilares, se recogieron una serie de parámetros periodontales, se tomaron radiografías de cono largo y se recogieron muestras de la placa subgingival para análisis usando la cuadrícula de DNA-DNA hibridación. Los datos clínicos y radiográficos se recogieron al conectar los pilares y tras 1 y 10 años. Resultados: Tras 10 años de carga, los índices medios de placa y sangrado y los cambios en el nivel óseo marginal y de inserción no fueron significativos, ni entre los grupos OD y FFP, ni dentro del grupo OD. La pérdida de hueso marginal entre la conexión de los pilares y el año 10 fue de 0.86 y 0.73 mm para los grupos OD y FFP, respectivamente. La microflora subgingival en los lugares de implantes fue comparable entre todos los (sub)-grupos, con un bajo recuento de DNA (±10 × 105) pero una alta detección de A. actinomycetemcomitans (>90%), P. gingivalis (>85%) y T. forsythensis (30%). La composición de la microflora subgingival fue influida por la profundidad de sondaje y la tendencia al sangrado. La satisfacción de los pacientes fue muy alta para ambos grupos de rehabilitación protésica. El grupo FFP puntuó solo un poco mejor para la satisfacción masticatoria y satisfacción general. Conclusión: Estos datos indican que desde el punto de vista clínico y microbiológico al igual que la satisfacción del paciente, tanto la sobredentadura como la prótesis completa fija ofrecen unos resultados favorables a largo plazo. Heroux Abstract Two new mixed-valent [Mn4] single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have been synthesized by using N -alkylated diethanolamine ligands and ferrocenecarboxylic acid. Both complexes exhibit weak ferromagnetic exchange and appreciable axial zero-field splitting as evidenced by DC magnetic susceptibility and field-dependent magnetization measurements. A significant frequency-dependent out-of-phase signal in the AC susceptibility is also observed for both complexes, a feature that is characteristic of SMMs. The ground-state spin of each complex was determined from the DC data and extrapolation of the low-frequency AC data, giving a value of S = 8. [source] The Quest for Nanoscale Magnets: The example of [Mn12] Single Molecule MagnetsADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 43 2009Guillaume Rogez Abstract Recent advances on the organization and characterization of [Mn12] single molecule magnets (SMMs) on a surface or in 3D are reviewed. By using nonconventional techniques such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), it is shown that [Mn12]-based SMMs deposited on a surface lose their SMM behavior, even though the molecules seem to be structurally undamaged. A new approach is reported to get high-density information-storage devices, based on the 3D assembling of SMMs in a liquid crystalline phase. The 3D nanostructure exhibits the anisotropic character of the SMMs, thus opening the way to address micrometric volumes by two photon absorption using the pump-probe technique. We present recent developments such as µ-SQUID, magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), or magneto-optical circular dichroism (MOCD), which enable the characterization of SMM nanostructures with exceptional sensitivity. Further, the spin-polarized version of the STM under ultrahigh vacuum is shown to be the key tool for addressing not only single molecule magnets, but also magnetic nano-objects. [source] Monitoring local fiber volume fraction in preform lap joints using Hall-effect sensorsPOLYMER COMPOSITES, Issue 2 2010Reza Samadi This article describes the use of Hall-effect sensors for monitoring local values of the fiber volume fraction in vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding. Nonintrusive sensors mounted on the vacuum bag enable monitoring at a large number of points, under molding inserts and around geometrical features. Magnets can be mounted on the outer face of nonmetallic moulds. Low-cost sensors can be discarded if damaged and the signal is unaffected by ambient conditions. The technique is demonstrated for lap-jointed preforms made from two different reinforcements. All results presented in the article are validated using linear variable differential transducers. Although preform thickness is higher at superimposed lap joints, the fiber volume fraction is significantly larger in the joints. Interlaid continuous plies lead to a more reproducible behavior. [source] Design of an MR-compatible piezoelectric actuator for MR elastographyCONCEPTS IN MAGNETIC RESONANCE, Issue 4 2002Kai Uffmann Abstract Magnetic Resonance (MR) elastography is a method for measuring tissue elasticity via phase images acquired with an MR scanner. The propagation of periodic mechanical waves through the tissue can be captured by means of a modified phase contrast sequence. These waves are generated with a mechanical oscillator (actuator) and coupled into the tissue through the skin. The actuator must be capable of generating a sinusoidal excitation with excellent phase and amplitude stability, while not disturbing the MR imaging process. In this work, an actuator based on a piezoelectric principle was developed. Based on the imaging evaluation of several material samples, the housing for the piezoelectric ceramic was constructed of aluminum. Smaller parts of the housing were manufactured from brass and titanium to fulfill the mechanical constraints. A lever was used to transfer the oscillation generated by the piezoelectric ceramic to the point of excitation. The lever amplifies the piezoelectric motion, allowing for a more compact design. Three different lever designs were characterized by an acceleration sensor both outside and inside the magnet. It was shown that the rigidity of the lever, as determined by its material and form, was decisive in determining the resonant frequency of the system and therefore the maximum practical frequency of operation. It was also shown that the motion of the oscillator is unaffected by the electromagnetic fields of the MR imager. The final design can be placed directly in the magnet bore within a few centimeters of the tissue volume to be imaged without generating significant artifacts. An amplitude range of 0,1 mm in the frequency range from 0 to over 300 Hz was achieved, sufficient for performing most MR elastography applications. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This is an extended inverse method in which the entire potential solution space for the superconductors has been considered, rather than single current density layers. The solution provides an insight into the required superconducting coil pattern for a desired magnet configuration. This information is then used as an initial set of parameters for the magnet structure, and a previously developed hybrid numerical optimization technique is used to obtain the final geometry of the magnet. The CDM scheme is applied to the design of compact symmetric, asymmetric, and open architecture 1.0,1.5 T MRI magnet systems of novel geometry and utility. A new symmetric 1.0-T system that is just 1 m in length with a full 50-cm diameter of the active, or sensitive, volume (DSV) is detailed, as well as an asymmetric system in which a 50-cm DSV begins just 14 cm from the end of the coil structure. Finally a 1.0-T open magnet system with a full 50-cm DSV is presented. These new designs provide clinically useful homogeneous regions and have appropriately restricted stray fields but, in some of the designs, the DSV is much closer to the end of the magnet system than in conventional designs. CRP is a plasma protein and is among the most expressed proteins in acute phase inflammation cases, being a known biomarker for inflammatory states. The assay was based on a sandwich format in which a RNA aptamer was coupled to a monoclonal antibody and alkaline phosphatase (AP) was used as enzymatic label. After the sandwich assay, the modified magnetic beads were captured by a magnet on the surface of a graphite working electrode and the electrochemical detection was thus achieved through the addition of the AP substrate (,-naphthyl-phosphate) and ,-naphthol produced during the enzymatic reaction was detected using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The parameters influencing the different steps of the assay were optimized in order to reach the best sensitivity and specificity. With the optimized conditions, the assay was applied to the analysis of CRP free serum and serum samples. [source] Effect of Ti addition on magnetic properties of TbCu7 -type Sm-Fe-Co-Mn system nitridesELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN, Issue 7 2008Hiroshi Yamamoto Abstract To support the development of high-performance isotropic bonded magnets, experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of Ti addition on the magnetic properties of Sm-Fe-Co-Mn system nitride compounds with TbCu7 -type structure. Sm10(Fe0.9Co0.1)89.5,xMn0.5Tix (x=0 to 1.0) alloy ribbons were prepared by the single-roller rapid-quenching method. The effects of alloy composition and of heat treatment and nitriding conditions on the magnetic properties were examined. The optimum preparation conditions of the compounds were as follows. Composition: {Sm10(F0.9Co0.1)89Mn0.5Ti0.5}86.8N13.2; roller speed: 50 m/s; heat treatment: 700°C×60 min in high-purity Ar gas; nitriding conditions: 420°C×15 h in high-purity N2 gas. Typical magnetic properties of the obtained compound powders were Jr = 0.97 T, HcJ = 730.8 kA/m,(BH)max = 140.0 kJ/m3 (17.6 MGOe), Tc=500°C. XRD, TEM photographs, and recoil loops of the hysteresis curve demonstrated that this sample had the characteristics of an exchange spring magnet. The value of (BH)max for the isotropic compression molding bonded magnet prepared from the {Sm10(F0.9Co0.1)89Mn0.5Ti0.5}86.8N13.2 powder was 94.8 kJ/m3 (11.9 MGOe) at a bonded magnet density of 6.07 Mg/m3. A permanent magnet with a magnetic field of 1.2 T is installed for size separation of large cluster ions. Trace formations at HOPG surface by the irradiation with size-selected Ar-cluster ions under an acceleration energy of 30 keV were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Generation behavior of the craterlike traces is strongly affected by the number of constituent atoms (cluster size) of the irradiating cluster ion. When the incident cluster ion is composed of 100 to 3000 atoms, craterlike traces are observed on the irradiated surfaces. In contrast, such traces are not observed at all with the irradiation of the cluster ions composed of over 5000 atoms. Such behavior is discussed on the basis of the kinetic energy per constituent atom of the cluster ion. To study GCIB irradiation effects on macromolecules, GCIB was irradiated on DNA molecules absorbed on graphite surface. Mueller Summary Purpose:, The thalamus plays an important role in seizure propagation in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). This study investigated how structural abnormalities in the focus, ipsilateral thalamus and extrafocal cortical structures relate to each other in TLE with mesiotemporal sclerosis (TLE-MTS) and without hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-no). Methods:, T1 and high-resolution T2 images were acquired on a 4T magnet in 29 controls, 15 TLE-MTS cases, and 14 TLE-no. Thalamus volumes were obtained by warping a labeled atlas onto each subject's brain. Deformation-based morphometry was used to identify regions of thalamic volume loss and FreeSurfer for cortical thickness measurements. CA1 volumes were obtained from high-resolution T2 images. Multiple regression analysis and correlation analyses for voxel- and vertex-based analyses were performed in SPM2 and FreeSurfer. Results:, TLE-MTS had bilateral volume loss in the anterior thalamus, which was correlated with CA1 volume and cortical thinning in the mesiotemporal lobe. TLE-no had less severe volume loss in the dorsal lateral nucleus, which was correlated with thinning in the mesiotemporal region but not with extratemporal thinning. Discussion:, The findings suggest that seizure propagation from the presumed epileptogenic focus or regions close to it into the thalamus occurs in TLE-MTS and TLE-no and results in circumscribed neuronal loss in the thalamus. However, seizure spread beyond the thalamus seems not to be responsible for the extensive extratemporal cortical abnormalities in TLE. This humidity response is caused by the adsorption and desorption of non-coordinated water (so-called zeolitic water) molecules in the interstitial site. [source] The future of magnetic resonance-based techniques in neurologyEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY, Issue 1 2001European Federation of Neurological Societies Task Force Magnetic resonance techniques have become increasingly important in neurology for defining: 1,brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerve or muscle structure; 2,pathological changes in tissue structures and properties; and 3,dynamic patterns of functional activation of the brain. New applications have been driven in part by advances in hardware, particularly improvements in magnet and gradient coil design. New imaging strategies allow novel approaches to contrast with, for example, diffusion imaging, magnetization transfer imaging, perfusion imaging and functional magnetic resonance imaging. In parallel with developments in hardware and image acquisition have been new approaches to image analysis. These have allowed quantitative descriptions of the image changes to be used for a precise, non-invasive definition of pathology. With the increasing capabilities and specificity of magnetic resonance techniques it is becoming more important that the neurologist is intimately involved in both the selection of magnetic resonance studies for patients and their interpretation. There is a need for considerably improved access to magnetic resonance technology, particularly in the acute or intensive care ward and in the neurosurgical theatre. This report illustrates several key developments. The task force concludes that magnetic resonance imaging is a major clinical tool of growing significance and offers recommendations for maximizing the potential future for magnetic resonance techniques in neurology. [source] Novel Magnetic Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles as Non-Viral Vectors for the Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor GeneADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 1 2010Hsi-Chin Wu Abstract Nanoparticles (NPs) of synthetic hydroxyapatite (Hap) and natural bone mineral (NBM) are rendered magnetic by treatment with iron ions using a wet-chemical process. The magnetic NPs (mNPs), which are about 300,nm in diameter, display superparamagnetic properties in a superconducting quantum interference device, with a saturation magnetization of about 30,emu g,1. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the magnetic properties of the NPs are the result of the hetero-epitaxial growth of magnetite on the Hap and NBM crystallites. The mNPs display a high binding affinity for plasmid DNA in contrast to magnetite NPs which do not bind the plasmid well. The mHap and mNBM NPs result in substantial increases in the transfection of rat marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with the gene for glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), with magnetofection compared to transfection in the absence of a magnet. The amount of GDNF recovered in the medium approaches therapeutic levels despite the small amount of plasmid delivered by the NPs. Willner Abstract Machinelike operations are common functions in biological systems, and substantial recent research efforts are directed to mimic such processes at the molecular or nanoscale dimensions. The present Feature Article presents three complementary approaches to design machinelike operations: by the signal-triggered mechanical shuttling of molecular components; by the signal-triggering of chemical processes on surfaces, resulting in mechanical motion of micro/nanoscale objects; and by the fuel-triggered motility of biomolecule,metal nanowire hybrid systems. The shuttling of molecular components on molecular wires assembled on surfaces in semirotaxane configurations using electrical or optical triggering signals is described. The control of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface properties through molecular shuttling or by molecular bending/stretching processes is presented. Stress generated on microelements, such as cantilevers, results in the mechanical deflection of the cantilever. The deposition of a redox-active polyaniline film on a cantilever allows the reversible electrochemically induced deflection and retraction of the cantilever by the electrochemical oxidation or reduction of the polymer film, respectively. A micro-robot consisting of the polypyrrole (PPy) polymer deposited on a multi-addressable configuration of electrodes is described. Au magnetic core/shell nanoparticles are incorporated into a polyaniline film, and the conductivity of the composite polymer is controlled by an external magnet. Finally, the synthesis of a hybrid nanostructure consisting of two actin filaments tethered to the two ends of a Au nanowire is described. The adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-fueled motility of the hybrid nanostructure on a myosin monolayer associated with a solid support is demonstrated. [source] Simultaneously recorded EEG,fMRI: Removal of gradient artifacts by subtraction of head movement related average artifact waveformsHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 10 2009Limin Sun Abstract Electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded simultaneously with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are corrupted by large repetitive artifacts generated by the switched MR gradients. Several methods have been proposed to remove these distortions by subtraction of averaged artifact templates from the ongoing EEG. Here, we present a modification of this approach which accounts for head movements to improve the extracted template. Using the fMRI analysis package statistical parametric mapping (SPM; FIL London) the head displacement is determined at each half fMRI-volume. The basic idea is to apply a moving average algorithm for template extraction but to include only epochs that were obtained at the same head position as the artefact to be removed. This approach was derived from phantom EEG measurements demonstrating substantial variations of the artefact waveform in response to movements of the phantom in the MRI magnet. To further reduce the residual noise, we applied a resampling algorithm which aligns the EEG samples in a strict adaptive manner to the fMRI timing. Finally, we propose a new algorithm to suppress residual artifacts such as those occasionally observed in case of brief strong movements, which are not reflected by the movement indicator because of the limited temporal resolution of the fMRI sequence. On the basis of EEG recordings of six subjects these measures combined reduce the residual artefact activity quantified in terms of the spectral power at the gradient repetition rate and its harmonics by roughly 20 to 50% (depending on the amount of movement) predominantly in frequencies beyond 30 Hz.
