Selected AbstractsSimultaneously improving the toughness, flexural modulus and thermal performance of isotactic polypropylene by ,-, crystalline transition and inorganic whisker reinforcementPOLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, Issue 2 2010Yewen Cao Magnesium salt (M-HOS) whisker and ,-nucleating agent were introduced into polypropylene and their effects on the crystalline structures, morphologies, mechanical properties, and thermal resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The results of wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polar optical microscopy (POM) examinations suggested that the presence of the whisker did not cause any negative effect on the occurrence of ,-modification, and ,-phase became absolutely dominant form in ,-nucleated samples. The mechanical and thermal properties tests demonstrated that there is an excellent synergy between the ,-nucleating agent and the whisker. For PP composite containing 0.1 wt% of the ,-nucleating agent and 10 wt% of the whiskers, the Izod notched impact strength, elongation at break, flexural modulus, and heat deflection temperature were increased by 108, 194, 31, and 40%, respectively, compared with those of neat PP. By combining the toughening effect of ,,, transition with the reinforcing effect of the whisker, simultaneous improvement in toughness, flexural modulus, and thermal performance of PP was successfully achieved. SCI., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers [source] Synthesis and characterization of poly(arylene ether)s derived from 4,4,-bishydroxybiphenyl and 4,4,-bishydroxyterphenylJOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE (IN TWO SECTIONS), Issue 1 2002Arun Kashinath Salunke Abstract A series of poly(arylene ether)s were successfully prepared by aromatic, nucleophilic substitution reactions with various perfluoroalkyl-activated bisfluoromonomers with 4,4,-bishydroxybiphenyl and 4,4,-bishydroxyterphenyl. 4,4,-Bishydroxyterphenyl was synthesized through the Grignard coupling reaction of magnesium salt of 4-bromoanisole with dibromobenzene followed by demethylation with pyridine,hydrochloride. The products obtained by the displacement of fluorine atoms exhibited good inherent viscosity, up to 0.77 dL/g, and number-average molecular weights up to 69,300. These poly(arylene ether)s showed very good thermal stability, up to 548 °C for 5% weight loss according to thermogravimetric analysis under synthetic air, and high glass-transition temperatures, up to 259 °C according to differential scanning calorimetry, depending on the exact repeat unit structure. These polymers were soluble in a wide range of organic solvents, such as N -methylpyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and CHCl3, and were insoluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and acetone. Thin films of these poly(arylene ether)s showed good transparency and exhibited tensile strengths up to 132 MPa, moduli up to 3.34 GPa, and elongations at break up to 84%, depending on their exact repeating unit structures. These values are comparable to those of high-performance thermoplastic materials such as poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and Ultem poly(ether imide) (PEI). J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 55,69, 2002 [source] Effect of Water Hardness on the Taste of Alkaline Electrolyzed WaterJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 4 2005Masamichi Koseki ABSTRACT: The effect of water hardness on the taste of alkaline electrolyzed water (AEW) was examined by sensory evaluation. Sensory test 1 of commercial bottled mineral water to which calcium and/or magnesium salts had been added was performed by panelists who evaluated the effect of hardness on the taste of water using a scoring method (hedonic scaling test) and a 1-pair comparison method. The water, in which the calcium concentration and the magnesium concentration was 20 mg/L and 2 mg/L, respectively, was found to taste better than any water containing other concentrations of calcium and magnesium. Sensory test 2 of bottled mineral waters having hardnesses of 30 mg/L to 290 mg/L, of activated carbon filtration water having a hardness of 50 mg/L, and of AEWs was performed by panelists using a scoring method (hedonic scaling test) and a pair test, and their preferences for the taste of AEWs was surveyed. The taste of AEW made by electrolyzing activated carbon filtration water did not differ from that of the water before it was electrolyzed. The same was true of AEW made by electrolyzing bottled mineral water having a hardness of 80 mg/L. However, 3 kinds of AEWs made by electrolyzing bottled mineral waters having hardnesses of 30 mg/L, 170 mg/L, and 290 mg/L were found to taste less pleasant than each bottled mineral water before being electrolyzed. The results of sensory tests 1 and 2 show that good-tasting AEW could be produced by an alkaline water electrolyzed from most tap water of Japan because its hardness varies from approximately 50 mg/L to 80 mg/L. [source] Amelioration of Oxaliplatin Neurotoxicity by Drugs in Humans and Experimental Animals: A MiniReview of Recent LiteratureBASIC AND CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY & TOXICOLOGY, Issue 4 2010Badreldin H. Ali The drug is particularly useful alone and in combination with flurouracil and leucovorin in colorectal cancer, but it is also used for other cancers such as those of the ovary, lung, breast and liver, as well as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The drug is known to cause neurological, gastrointestinal and haematological toxicities. Neurotoxicity occurs in most of the treated patients and is considered to be a serious limitation for the use of the drug. The mechanism of the neurotoxicity is not known with certainty but may involve prolongation of sodium channels opening. Strategies to ameliorate oxaliplatin neurotoxicity include the use of several ,neuroprotective' drugs. This MiniReview attempts to list and comment on the action and use of some of these agents, which include carbamazepine, gabapentin, calcium and magnesium salts, reduced glutathione, N -acetylcysteine and a few others. None of these drugs have been proven to be effective in large, controlled, clinical trials. [source] |
