Patterns of convection in the tropical pacific and their influence on New Zealand weather

Abstract Characteristic patterns of convection in the tropical Pacific Ocean have previously been inferred from analysis of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), and associated with year-to-year variations in El Niño (EN),Southern Oscillation events. This study examines both the effects of these convection patterns on the New Zealand climate, and the more general influence of tropical convection on the New Zealand sector of the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere circulation, as a whole, is found to be most strongly influenced by equatorial convection near the Philippines, and in a broad band over the central Pacific. Where increased convection occurs west of 160°E, La Niña-like (LN) conditions prevail. When the anomalous convective activity is located near the dateline, in ,moderate' EN conditions, SW flow prevails over New Zealand. This gives way to stronger WSW anomalies as the centre of convection is displaced further eastwards and a second centre of reduced convection becomes prominent west of the dateline in strong EN (EN+) events. The changes in wind regimes over the New Zealand region implied by the hemispheric 1000 hPa height fields are supported by mean sea-level pressure differences between a number of New Zealand and adjacent island stations. Indices of the zonal flow show a weak reduction in strength of the westerlies for LN OLR composites, and no apparent effects for EN composites, whereas EN+ conditions strongly favour above-normal westerlies. The meridional flow over New Zealand is skewed towards more frequent southerlies in both the EN and EN+ composites, whereas LN conditions favour northerly flow anomalies. A change is also observed in the frequency of New Zealand-area ,weather regimes'. Enhanced convection centred on 5°S and east of the dateline, as found in the EN+ composites, leads to an increase in zonal regimes and a corresponding decrease in blocking regimes. The direct influence of tropical OLR variations on New Zealand temperature and precipitation has also been assessed. These indicate that the response is not simply one of degree. Different spatial anomaly patterns in the climatic elements result from the varying regional circulation patterns, and these need to be considered if present climate-forecasting schemes are to be improved. Effects of Interspecific Interactions between Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella pyrenoidosa on Their Growth and Physiology

Abstract Interactions between Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella pyrenoidosa were analyzed by flow cytometry and by phytoplankton pulse-amplitude-modulated fluorimetry (Phyto-PAM) in joint cultures as well as in cultures separated by dialysis membranes. Results showed that the growth of C. pyrenoidosa was greater than that of M. aeruginosa, and that the growth of M.aeruginosa but not the growth of C. pyrenoidosa was significantly inhibited by the interactions between M. aeruginosa and C. pyrenoidosa. Culture filtrates of these two algae showed no apparent effects on the growth of the competing species. For M. aeruginosa, decreases in esterase activity, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and maximum quantum yield were observed in joint cultures, indicating that the metabolic activity and photosynthetic capacity of M.aeruginosa were suppressed. Light limitation from the shading effect of C. pyrenoidosa may be the main reason for such inhibition. For C. pyrenoidosa, esterase activity was suppressed in membrane-separated and joint cultures, suggesting that C.pyrenoidosa was probably affected by allelopathic substances secreted by M.aeruginosa. However, no significant difference was observed in the chlorophyll a fluorescence and maximum quantum yield of C. pyrenoidosa in the two cultures. In addition, interspecific interactions induced a reduction in size in both M. aeruginosa and C.pyrenoidosa, which may contribute to the development of C. pyrenoidosa dominance in the present study. Behavioral responses of nesting birds to human disturbance along recreational trails

ABSTRACT The presence of recreational trails can impact breeding birds either indirectly by altering habitat or the movement patterns of predators or directly if the presence of humans disturbs birds. We examined the behavioral responses of nesting female Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) to human disturbance using both experimental and observational approaches. From April to August 2006 and 2007, we monitored Northern Cardinal nests in 18 riparian forests in Ohio, USA. Two experimental trials were conducted at each nest (N= 63), with Flight Initiation Distance (FID, the distance at which a bird flushed from the nest) recorded as we approached nests by walking directly toward them and by walking along trails located variable distances from nests. We also measured flight initiation distance (FID) when nests were approached during routine nest checks (N= 160). Cardinals were six times more likely to flush when nests were approached directly, and females on higher nests were less likely to flush regardless of distance to trail. FID was not significantly influenced by the distance of nests from trails. We found no association between nest survival and the tendency of birds to flush. Rather, nest survival was best explained by nest height. Thus, our findings suggest that the responses of birds to human use of recreational trails have only short-term effects, with no apparent effects of on nest survival. Because the reaction of birds to humans in our study depended on how nests were approached, studies where FID is used as an indicator of sensitivity to human disturbance and is determined by direct approaches may overestimate the potential impact of trails on nesting birds. RESUMEN Los senderos recreativos pueden tener impactos indirectos a las aves reproductoras por la modificación del hábitat o por la alteración de los patrones de movimiento de los depredadores y tambien pueden tener impactos directos por la perturbación de las actividades humanas. Las respuestas del comportamiento de las hembras de la especie Cardinalis cardinalis a la perturbación humana fueron estudiados usando métodos experimentales y observacionales que aplicaron la Distancia del Comienzo de Vuelo (FID por sus siglas en inglés) como una medida de sensibilidad. De Abril , Agosto de los años 2006 y 2007, monitoreamos nidos de Cardinalis cardinalis en 18 sitios de bosque ripario en Ohio, EEUU. Realizamos dos pruebas experimentales para cada nido (N= 63), así que se registró FID para cada nido cuando se hizo un acercamiento al nido o directamente o por el sendero. Adicionalmente, recopilamos la FID para los acercamientos directos durante los chequeos rutinarios de los nidos (N= 160). Era seis veces mas probable que las aves volarían cuando se hizo el acercamiento al nido directamente, que cuando un observador pas' por el sendero. Era menos probable que las aves volarían de los nidos altos, pero la tendencia de volar no era relacionada a la distancia al sendero. La FID no estaba relacionada significativamente a la distancia al sendero ni a la altura del nido. No encontramos ninguna asociación entre sobrevivencia del nido y la tendencia de volar; sino la mejor explicación para el éxito de la anidación fue solo la altura del nido. Por lo tanto, estos resultados sugieren que las respuestas del comportamiento de las aves al uso recreativo de los senderos representan efectos de corto plazo y con pocas consecuencias importantes a la reproducción. Conformational properties of thiophene oligomers

The molecular geometries and the torsional potentials about the inter-ring C-C bond in ,-oligothiophenes (,-nTh, n=2,4) have been calculated by means of conventional ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing the hybrid B3LYP and BH&HLYP functionals. The position and the energetics of the critical points in the potential energy curve generated by rotation about the inter-ring CC bond are shown to be dependent on the computational method. DFT calculations, in comparison with MP2 calculations, favour conjugative interactions, while steric and coulombic interactions are equally treated by both methods. On oligomerization the electron delocalisation increases slightly, the p-charge being preferentially confined within the rings, although it is sufficient to move the molecular structure towards co-planarization and to increase the barrier through the perpendicular conformation. The IR and Raman spectra on the relevant rotamers of ,-2Th have been computed at HF/6,31G* and B3LYP/6,31G* levels. The comparison with the experiment is excellent. It has been found that small twisting from the planar conformation has no apparent effects, while 90° twisting and isomerization to the syn-gauche form produce significant frequency and intensity variations which could be useful probes in conformational studies. The simulated IR and Raman spectra of the ,-2Th rotamers are consistent with a small,-electron delocalisation between the rings. [source]


Diversity, abundance, and size structure of bivalve assemblages in the Sipsey River, Alabama,

Abstract 1.Patterns of mussel diversity and assemblage structure in the Sipsey River, Alabama, are described. Qualitative data were used to describe river-wide patterns of diversity. Quantitative data were used to describe the structure of mussel assemblages at several sites based on whole-substrate sampling that ensured all size classes were detected. 2.Major human impacts to the stream are limited to apparent effects of coal mining in the headwaters and the impoundment of the lower 9,km of the river by a dam on the Tombigbee River. These impacts resulted in a sharp decline in mussel diversity in the headwaters, and extirpation or decline of populations of several large-river species in the lower river that were probably dependent on colonization from the Tombigbee River. 3.Despite localized impacts, mussel assemblages throughout much of the river appear to be mostly intact and self-sustaining. These assemblages have several attributes that differ substantially from those in more degraded streams: (1) high retention of historical species richness; (2) gradual, longitudinal increase in species richness from upstream to downstream, resulting in distinctive headwater and downstream assemblages; (3) ubiquity of most species within particular river segments; (4) low dominance and high evenness with large populations of many species; and (5) frequent recruitment for most species resulting in occurrence of individuals in many size classes. 4.Few detailed and demographically unbiased descriptions of relatively intact mussel assemblages exist. We propose that characteristics described in the Sipsey River can be used as a baseline comparison for assessing relative degree of assemblage alteration in other streams and can serve as goals for restoration efforts. A pilot dose-escalation study of the effects of nordihydroguareacetic acid on hormone and prostate specific antigen levels in patients with relapsed prostate cancer

OBJECTIVE To assess the tolerability of the effects of nordihydroguareacetic acid (NDGA) and its effect on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics in patients with relapsed prostate cancer, as among the many biological effects of NDGA is the inhibition of the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) tyrosine kinase. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eligible patients were those with an increasing PSA level after definitive local therapy, in either the non-castrate (androgen-dependent prostate cancer, ADPC) or the castrate state (castration-resistant prostate cancer, CRPC) with no evidence of metastatic disease by bone scan or computed tomography of the abdomen or pelvis. Treatment consisted of continuous oral daily dosing according to a planned dose escalation of 750, 1250, 1750, 2250 and 2500 mg of NDGA. PSA levels were measured every 28 days. Serial levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, oestradiol and sex hormone-binding globulin were measured at baseline and monthly while on study therapy. RESULTS Fifteen patients were enrolled, including 11 with ADPC and four with CRPC. There were asymptomatic increases in transaminase in six patients, two of which were grade 3, all occurring at ,3 months. The increases in transaminase resolved after stopping NDGA but recurred with repeated dosing. Doses of NDGA up to 2500 mg/day caused no other toxicities. A median (range) of 5.5 (1,13) cycles were delivered. Of the 11 patients with ADPC, one had a decline in PSA level of >50% of the baseline value and one a decline of <50%. Three patients with ADPC had a greater than three-fold increase in PSA doubling time while on therapy, one from 11 to 46 months (750 mg), one from 9.5 to 49.5 months (1750 mg), and one from 5.9 to 46.2 months (2500 mg). There were no reductions in PSA level in patients with CRPC. There were no significant effects on levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, oestradiol or sex hormone-binding globulin. CONCLUSIONS Continuous daily dosing with NDGA is reasonably well tolerated but is associated with transaminitis in some patients, that occurs after several months on therapy. There were apparent effects on the rate of increase in PSA. Further study is required to determine the optimum pharmacokinetics and antitumour effects of this therapy. [source]
