Selected AbstractsMetallocene Combinations in Ethylene Polymerization: A Cyclic and Differential Pulse Voltammetry StudyMACROMOLECULAR REACTION ENGINEERING, Issue 3 2008Fernando Silveira Abstract A series of metallocenes, namely [Cp2ZrCl2], [(MeCp)2ZrCl2], [(nBuCp)2ZrCl2], [(iBuCp)2ZrCl2], [(tBuCp)2ZrCl2], [Cp2TiCl2], [Et(Ind)2ZrCl2], [Et(IndH4)2ZrCl2] and [MeSi2(Ind)2ZrCl2)], were combined in a 1:1 molar ratio within a reactor for ethylene polymerization, with MAO as the cocatalyst. The catalysts were characterized by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. The combined systems that showed the highest and lowest activities were combined in 1:3 and 3:1 molar ratios. The catalyst activity in the ethylene polymerization reaction is discussed in terms of the estimated consumption rate, decomposition rate constant and half-life of the metallocene species formed with MAO in an ethylene atmosphere. Shakouri Summary A study was conducted to investigate the effect of the key cereal grains and a microbial enzyme supplement on broiler chicken performance, gut microflora and intestinal function. Ingestion of the barley-based diet was associated with low 28-day body weight, decreased feed intake and high FCR. The supplemental enzyme increased feed intake and weight gain of the chickens on a wheat-based diet. The pH of the gizzard and caecal contents varied with the grain type. Enzyme supplementation reduced ileal viscosity, particularly in birds that received the diet based on wheat. The birds on the barley-based diet had lower ileal digestibility of dry matter, protein and energy than those given maize and sorghum-based diets. The ileal digestibility of starch was increased by enzyme supplementation. Enzyme supplementation increased the number of total anaerobic bacteria in the gizzard of birds fed on sorghum and increased lactobacilli in the gizzard of those fed both sorghum and wheat. The birds fed the sorghum-based diet had the lowest counts of caecal total anaerobic bacteria and lactobacilli. Jejunal villus height and villus:crypt ratio of birds fed the barley-based diet were the lowest when compared with those fed the other diets. Enzyme application induced an increase in villus height and villus:crypt ratio of birds on wheat, crypt depth on barley and a reduction in crypt depth of chickens on the sorghum-based diets. The highest activity of maltase and the lowest activity of sucrase were observed in tissue from birds fed on maize and sorghum-based diets respectively. The differences in the performance of broilers on cereal grains could be explained by changes in intestinal morphology, enzyme activities and gut microflora as well as nutrient digestibility. The improved performance by supplemental enzyme in wheat-fed chickens was associated with beneficial changes in intestinal morphology and digesta viscosity. [source] Physiological performance of largemouth bass related to local adaptation and interstock hybridization: implications for conservation and managementJOURNAL OF FISH BIOLOGY, Issue 2001S. J. Cooke Four genetically distinct stocks of age 2+ years largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides were produced using adults collected from two regions in the upper midwest (central Illinois, IL and south-eastern Wisconsin, WI, U.S.A.). Two pure stocks (IL × IL and WI × WI), as well as both of their reciprocal F1 interstock hybrids (IL × WI and WI × IL) were produced in research ponds in Champaign, IL. In general, swimming performance, routine oxygen consumption and activity were highest at 18 × C, intermediate at 12 × C, and lowest at 6. C for all stocks. However, performance indicators varied among stocks at each of the temperatures. The pure Illinois stock (IL × IL) had the lowest activity: cost ratio at 18 × C and the highest at 6_ C (based upon swimming strength, routine activity rates and routine metabolic rates). The opposite pattern was observed for the other pure stock (WI × WI). Although differences were less distinct at lower temperatures, the two pure stocks (IL × IL and WI × WI) outperformed both interstock hybrids. These results indicate that not only do non-native stocks appear to have reduced performance relative to locally adapted stocks, but also that interstock hybrids exhibit performance impairments, not hybrid vigour. [source] Effect of section of yam (Dioscorea cayenensis) tuber used in minisett on the biochemical properties of the resultant tuberJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 13 2002Andrew O Wheatley Abstract The effect of the section of yam (Dioscorea cayenensis) tuber used as planting material in minisett on the biochemical properties of the resultant tuber was studied. The biochemical parameters invertase (EC 3.2.1.26), acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2), peroxidase (EC1.11.1.7), polyphenol oxidase (EC 1.10.3.1), total sugars and starch were evaluated in tubers resulting from field-grown and tissue culture-derived setts of the cultivars Roundleaf and Blackwiss yellow yams. No significant differences were observed between tubers resulting from field-grown and tissue culture-derived setts relative to the parameters studied. Invertase activity was found to be highest in tubers from middle-derived setts, while tail-derived setts had the lowest activity for both cultivars. Middle-derived tubers were also found to have significantly higher levels of acid phosphatase activity and starch content. However, middle-derived tubers had the lowest level of total sugars. Polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase were also found to be significantly higher in tubers from middle-derived setts. These results suggest a higher rate of active starch formation in tubers from middle-derived setts. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationship Studies of Pyrazole-based Heterocycles as Antitumor AgentsARCHIV DER PHARMAZIE, Issue 7 2010Ahmad M. Farag Abstract Several 4-cyano-1,5-diphenylpyrazoles attached to different heterocyclic ring systems at position 3 were synthesized starting from ethyl 4-cyano-1,5-diphenyl-1H -pyrazole-3-carboxylate 1. The newly synthesized compounds were tested in vivo for their anti-estrogenic effects and evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxic properties against estrogen-dependent tumors. 3-(5-Mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-yl)-1,5-diphenyl-1H -pyrazole-4-carbonitrile 13 revealed the highest cytotoxic activity with a GI50 value equal to 40 nM against the IGROVI ovarian tumor cell line. It also showed an anti-estrogen activity 1.6 more effective than the reference drug, in addition to a high tolerable dose. 3-(5-(Methylthio)-4-phenyl-4H -1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-1,5-diphenyl-1H -pyrazole-4-carbonitrile 7 was found to have the highest anti-estrogenic activity, while 1,5-diphenyl-3-[5-(phenylamino)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-1H -pyrazole-4-carbonitrile 11 showed the lowest activity. The oral LD50 values revealed that most of the tested compounds are relatively nontoxic. [source] |
