School-Age Adopted Chinese Girls' Behavioral Adjustment, Academic Performance, and Social Skills: Longitudinal Results

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ORTHOPSYCHIATRY, Issue 2 2009
Tony Xing Tan EdD
Longitudinal data on 177 school-age adopted Chinese girls (Time 1: mean age = 8.92 years, SD = 1.76; Time 2: mean age = 11.18 years, SD = 1.79) were analyzed to determine their long-term outcomes in behavioral adjustment, academic performance (measured with the Child Behavior Checklist/6,18), and social skills (measured with the Social Skills Rating System) and how these outcomes were related to preadoption adversity. More than 90% of the girls were adopted at 24 months or younger (M = 19.25, SD = 21.67). Results revealed that over a 2-year period, there was a moderate to strong stability in the children's behavioral adjustment and academic performance. However, there was a significant increase in the number of children with deviant internalizing problems. At both times, higher degrees of preadoption adversity were related to more internalizing problems and poorer academic performance. Children who were adopted at older ages had poorer academic performance. Children who were older had a lower level of assertion and a higher level of responsibility. Children's attention problems at Time 1 mediated the effect of preadoption adversity on academic performance at Time 2. [source]

Transition of Adolescent Political Action Orientations to Voting Behavior in Early Adulthood in View of a Social-Cognitive Action Theory Model of Personality

POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 2 2000
Günter Krampen
The political activity and voting behavior of 136 young German adults in 1994 were predicted by their political action orientations measured 7 years before. Respondents belonging to cohorts born in 1971, 1972, and 1973 were surveyed in 1987, 1988, and 1994. The questionnaires measured variables relevant to the social-cognitive action theory model of personality: self-concept of political competence, beliefs about political locus of control, political knowledge, trust in politics, satisfaction with politics, and political activity in everyday life. The results are interpreted with respect to the correlative and absolute stability versus plasticity of the variables from 1987 to 1994, as well as the predictive value of the action theory personality variables for political activities and for voting behavior measured 7 years later. Longitudinal results indicate a high predictive value of self-concept of political competence and political knowledge for political activity and voting in early adulthood. Because only these two personality variables showed relatively high positional stability coefficients from adolescence to early adulthood, the discussion refers to the necessity of early developmental interventions to prevent extreme types of politically uninterested and passive adults. Therefore, the social-cognitive action theory personality model of political participation is extended to a social-cognitive action theory personality model of political socialization in the life span. Cortisol levels and measures of body composition in middle-aged and older men

CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 1 2007
Thomas G. Travison
Summary Introduction, Similarities in the symptomatic expressions of excess adiposity and hypercortisolaemic conditions suggest that elevated glucocorticoid exposure may influence the pathogenesis of obesity. Circulating cortisol levels are not typically elevated in obese subjects, but data from large prospective samples are rare. We undertook an analysis to determine both cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between body composition and serum cortisol concentrations in a randomly chosen group of 999 community-dwelling men, aged 40,79 years. Methods, Data were obtained from the two follow-up waves of the Massachusetts Male Ageing Study (T2: 1995,97; T3: 2002,04). Partial correlation and multivariate regression analyses were used to estimate cross-sectional (T2) and longitudinal associations between serum cortisol concentrations and a range of measures of subjects' body composition, including weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip girth ratio (WHR), and percentage body fat (measured by bioelectrical impedance at T3); similar analyses were conducted to assess the association between change (T2 to T3) in serum cortisol and simultaneous change in body composition parameters. Results, We observed weak negative associations between cortisol concentrations and all body composition parameters, with the exception of percentage body fat. Longitudinal results demonstrated similar relationships but associations were of lesser magnitude. T2 cortisol concentrations were not associated with change in body composition over time, whereas T2 body size was positively associated with longitudinal changes in cortisol concentrations, providing limited evidence that weight change drives changes in cortisol concentrations, rather than vice versa. Results were unchanged when age and other covariate effects were controlled. Conclusions, Circulating cortisol concentrations are somewhat lower in obese than in nonobese community-dwelling men. There is some evidence that excess adiposity presages increases in cortisol concentrations, rather than the reverse. However, this observation should be greeted with caution, as age-related weight loss , and not gain , was associated with simultaneous increases in serum cortisol concentrations. [source]

Calcium Accretion in Girls and Boys During Puberty: A Longitudinal Analysis

JOURNAL OF BONE AND MINERAL RESEARCH, Issue 11 2000
Donald A. Bailey
Abstract The primary purpose of this study was to estimate the magnitude and variability of peak calcium accretion rates in the skeletons of healthy white adolescents. Total-body bone mineral content (BMC) was measured annually on six occasions by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA; Hologic 2000, array mode), a BMC velocity curve was generated for each child by a cubic spline fit, and peak accretion rates were determined. Anthropometric measures were collected every 6 months and a 24-h dietary recall was recorded two to three times per year. Of the 113 boys and 115 girls initially enrolled in the study, 60 boys and 53 girls who had peak height velocity (PHV) and peak BMC velocity values were used in this longitudinal analysis. When the individual BMC velocity curves were aligned on the age of peak bone mineral velocity, the resulting mean peak bone mineral accrual rate was 407 g/year for boys (SD, 92 g/year; range, 226,651 g/year) and 322 g/year for girls (SD, 66 g/year; range, 194,520 g/year). Using 32.2% as the fraction of calcium in bone mineral, as determined by neutron activation analysis (Ellis et al., J Bone Miner Res 1996;11:843-848), these corresponded to peak calcium accretion rates of 359 mg/day for boys (81 mg/day; 199,574 mg/day) and 284 mg/day for girls (58 mg/day; 171,459 mg/day). These longitudinal results are 27,34% higher than our previous cross-sectional analysis in which we reported mean values of 282 mg/day for boys and 212 mg/day for girls (Martin et al., Am J Clin Nutr 1997;66:611-615). Mean age of peak calcium accretion was 14.0 years for the boys (1.0 years; 12.0-15.9 years), and 12.5 years for the girls (0.9 years; 10.5-14.6 years). Dietary calcium intake, determined as the mean of all assessments up to the age of peak accretion was 1140 mg/day (SD, 392 mg/day) for boys and 1113 mg/day (SD, 378 mg/day) for girls. We estimate that 26% of adult calcium is laid down during the 2 adolescent years of peak skeletal growth. This period of rapid growth requires high accretion rates of calcium, achieved in part by increased retention efficiency of dietary calcium. [source]

Longitudinal changes in peripheral refraction with age

OPHTHALMIC AND PHYSIOLOGICAL OPTICS, Issue 5 2006
W. N. Charman
Abstract The changes in the patterns of refraction (skiagrams) over the central ±35 degrees of the horizontal field of 3 originally near-emmetropic eyes of 2 subjects were determined over a time interval of 26 years. The subjects were aged 32 and 40 years at the time of the first measurements. The central refractions shifted in the expected hyperopic direction, while the radial and tangential image fields in the periphery became more myopic. These longitudinal results agree with recent transverse studies, provided that allowance is made for the change in central refraction: the reported loss with age in peripheral visual performance does not seem to be attributable to markedly increased peripheral astigmatism. Culture and psychiatric symptoms in Puerto Rican children: longitudinal results from one ethnic group in two contexts

THE JOURNAL OF CHILD PSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHIATRY AND ALLIED DISCIPLINES, Issue 5 2008
Cristiane S. Duarte
Background:, The development of youth psychopathology may be associated with direct and continuous contact with a different culture (acculturation) and to distress related to this process (cultural stress). We examine cultural experiences of Puerto Rican families in relation to youth psychiatric symptoms in two different contexts: one in which migrant Puerto Ricans reside on the mainland as an ethnic minority and another in which they reside in their place of origin. Methods:,Sample: Probability samples of 10- to 13-year-old youth of Puerto Rican background living in the South Bronx, New York City (SB) and in the San Juan Metropolitan area in Puerto Rico (PR) (N = 1,271) were followed over time. Measures: Three assessments of internalizing psychiatric symptoms (elicited through the DISC-IV) and of antisocial behaviors (ASB) quantified through a six-point index were carried out. Independent variables included scales of adult and child acculturation and cultural stress, and other putative correlates. Data analysis: Within each study site, multilevel linear regression models were examined. Results:, Parental acculturation was associated with ASB in youth at both sites, but youth acculturation itself was not related to psychiatric symptoms. At both contexts, cultural stress was a more consistent correlate of youth psychiatric symptoms than acculturation after controlling for nativity, maternal education, child gender, stressful life events and parental psychopathology. However, the strength of the youth cultural stress association decreased over time. Conclusion:, The association between cultural factors and child psychiatric symptoms is not restricted to contexts where an ethnic group is a minority. [source]
