[source] Homogeneity analysis of Turkish meteorological data setHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 8 2010Sinan Sahin Abstract The missing value interpolation and homogeneity analysis were performed on the meteorological data of Turkey. The data set has the observations of six variables: the maximum air temperature, the minimum air temperature, the mean air temperature, the total precipitation, the relative humidity and the local pressure of 232 stations for the period 1974,2002. The missing values on the monthly data set were estimated using two methods: the linear regression (LR) and the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Because of higher correlations between test and reference series, EM algorithm results were preferred. The homogeneity analysis was performed on the annual data using a relative test and four absolute homogeneity tests were used for the stations where non-testable series were found due to the low correlation coefficients between the test and the reference series. A comparison was accomplished by the graphics where relative and absolute tests provided different outcomes. Absolute tests failed to detect the inhomogeneities in the precipitation series at the significance level 1%. Interestingly, most of the inhomogeneities detected on the temperature variables existed in the Aegean region of Turkey. It is considered that theseinhomogeneities were mostly caused by non-natural effects such as relocation. Because of changes at topography at short distance in this region intensify non-random characteristics of the temperature series when relocation occurs even in small distances. The marine effect, which causes artifical cooling effect due to sea breezes has important impact on temperature series and the orograhpy allows this impact go through the inner parts in this region. [source] Along-channel mathematical modelling for proton exchange membrane fuel cellsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 12 2005Wenbo Huang Abstract Proper water and thermal management is essential for obtaining high performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). A steady, two-dimensional water and thermal management model was developed, aiming at considering pressure effects (i.e. the effects of local pressure on the cell performance), pressure drop, open circuit voltage variation with stack temperature, water vapour effects on membrane conductivity, which made the model physically more reasonable and more suitable for various operating conditions. The model could predict the distributions of a series of important parameters along the flow channel, and thus the effects of various operating and design parameters on the fuel cell performance could be investigated easily by numerical trial-and-error method. The modelling results compared well with the available experimental results from the literatures. The results also showed that the humidification of both anode and cathode is crucial for the performance of PEMFCs. The model could be a very useful engineering tool for the optimization of PEMFCs. The atomic scale motion that occurs when the two confining surfaces slide past each other induces flow in the lubricant layer that is akin of plastic flow. This results in friction-velocity relationships similar to Coulomb's law of friction. Moreover, the lubricant layer does not necessarily melt, even when the two solids are in stick slip motion. In this paper, atomic-scale details of the plastic flow mechanism are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. [source] Nurse staffing levels revisited: a consideration of key issues in nurse staffing levels and skill mix researchJOURNAL OF NURSING MANAGEMENT, Issue 6 2009BSc (Hons), MARIA FLYNN RGN Aim, This paper revisits the published evidence relating to how nurse staffing levels impact on patient, nurse and service outcomes and considers the implications of this body of research for nurse managers in their quest to determine optimum nursing numbers. Background, Within the context of the recognized global nursing shortage and particular local pressures within international health services, questions of appropriate nurse staffing levels and skill mix are once again becoming increasingly important. It would seem that the determination of optimum nurse staffing levels and skill mix is a central issue in relation to health service governance, service user involvement, as well as in the recruitment, retention and well-being of nursing staff across the service sectors. Methods, A review of published evidence was carried out, applying key principles of the systematic method, in order to facilitate the identification of current factors and issues in nurse staffing levels research. The review did not seek to address a specific research question. The search covered 10 years from 1998 to 2008 and identified more than 500 relevant papers, giving a wide international perspective. Key issues, The majority of research in the field relates to the acute service sector and there are considerable similarities in issues that transcend international boundaries. Much of the research focuses on the impact on patients and nurses of ,poor' nurse staffing levels. More recent studies have explored the impact of nurse staffing levels on the service organization itself. However, while there may be an association between models of nurse staffing and outcomes, there is insufficient evidence to establish a causal relationship between these factors. In this context it is perhaps time to reconsider how nursing outcomes are defined and measured. Implications for nursing management and conclusion, Nurse managers, commissioners of services and workforce planners need to be cognisant of key issues and analyses in the consideration of nurse staffing levels. Not least of these is the need for a healthy degree of caution regarding the supposed objectivity, scientific basis, or evidence base, for rational calculation of optimum nurse staffing levels. [source] Impression pressures against teeth in a partially edentulous model with a mobile tooth: influence of impression tray designJOURNAL OF ORAL REHABILITATION, Issue 5 2000Y. Nishi The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of custom tray designs on local pressures against teeth during the impression procedure. In a previous study, a partially edentulous simulation model with a mobile tooth was used, and the effect of custom tray designs on the displacement of the mobile tooth was examined during the impression procedure. Based on that study's results, we have assumed that the differences in impression pressures between the labial and the lingual sides of a mobile tooth could either cause or affect displacement. The present study was undertaken to determine the local impression pressures against each side of three anterior teeth, including one mobile tooth, using the same simulation model and the same custom trays as in the previous study. It was found that the local pressures exerted against teeth during the impression procedure were affected by the custom tray designs and varied according to the coronal shape, axis inclination and location of the teeth. [source] Political Parties and Governors as Determinants of Legislative Behavior in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies, 1988,2006LATIN AMERICAN POLITICS AND SOCIETY, Issue 1 2009José Antonio Cheibub ABSTRACT This article examines the relative importance of regional and national forces in shaping the behavior of Brazilian legislators at the national level. A widely held view is that national legislators respond to state pressures in making decisions, rather than pressures from the national government. Governors not only can influence national debates but also can determine outcomes by exerting control over their states' legislative delegations. This article examines a dataset of all roll-call votes in the Chamber of Deputies between 1989 and 2006 to isolate and evaluate the impact of local pressures on legislative voting. Spanning the terms of five presidents and five different congresses, the data show that the local influence is weaker than the national on the voting decisions of individual legislators and the voting cohesion of state delegations. Alternative institutional resources allow the central government to counteract the centrifugal pressures of federalism and other institutional influences. [source] |
