Selected AbstractsBlack youth, identity, and ethicsEDUCATIONAL THEORY, Issue 1 2005Garrett Albert Duncan This article examines stage models of racial identity that researchers and educators use to explain the subjective processes that influence how black youth navigate school. Despite the explicit challenge that most models of racial identity have posed to racist discourses in the research literature, the underlying ethics of their developmental trajectories is constrained by a politics of respectability that subverts a larger project of affirming black humanity. I use interview data to propose an alternative model for how black adolescent identity is formed. I conclude with a discussion of the importance of rethinking black adolescence in the context of changes in communication technologies associated with postindustrialism and globalization. [source] The Relationship Between Classroom Motivation and Academic Achievement in Elementary-School-Aged ChildrenFAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES RESEARCH JOURNAL, Issue 2 2004Sheri Coates Broussard The relationship between motivation and academic success has been better established with older children and adults than with younger children. As part of a larger project, the purpose of this study was to examine the relation-ship between classroom motivation and academic achievement in young elementary-school-aged children. The participants were 122 first-grade and 129 third-grade children from a mid-sized city in the southern United States. The findings from the current study were consistent with previous research in that higher levels of mastery motivation and judgment motivation were found to be related to higher math and reading grades in third graders. However, higher levels of mastery motivation, not judgment motivation, were related to higher math and reading grades in first graders. Rodgers MSc BSc RGN The extent of nursing research utilization in general medical and surgical wards There has been extensive speculation about the lack of research utilization in nursing but little attempt to quantify this phenomenon outside of North America. The current demands for evidence-based practice necessitate research utilization as one element of the process. As part of a larger project, this study aimed to describe the extent of research utilization by registered nurses in general medical and surgical wards in the Scottish Health Service. A postal survey was conducted for nurses to self-report their level of utilization of 14 research-based practices. The 14 practices represented examples of direct, indirect and methodological utilization of research. A research utilization score was constructed for each of the 14 practices and a total mean score constructed for all 14 practices. A random two-stage stratified sampling resulted in a total sample of 936 nurses from 25 hospitals. A 73% response rate was achieved. The total mean research utilization score for all nurses across all 14 nursing practices suggests that on average, nurses had heard, believed in and were beginning to use the practices. The sampling technique over-represents nurses in large hospitals and charge nurses, hence a weighting calculation on all scores was completed. There was little difference in weighted and unweighted scores. Scores on individual practices ranged from 60% (405/680) of nurses never having heard of a practice to 85% (574/680) always using a practice. This approach provides a valid and reliable method of assessing the extent of nursing research utilization. In several of the practices, nurses are making significant attempts at research-based practice. The level of research utilization compares favourably with research completed in North America and provides a baseline for United Kingdom and other country studies. [source] ICD: a qualitative study of patient experience the first year after implantationJOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 8 2004Helen CM Kamphuis MSc Background., The experiences of how patients live with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator are still poorly understood. Only a few qualitative studies have investigated this phenomenon. This paper was undertaken as part of a larger project to evaluate quality of life and psychological well-being in those survivors of cardiac arrest who have received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Aims and objectives., The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipients perceive their lives during the first year after implantation of the device. Methods., A sample of 21 patients who received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator was interviewed during three consecutive periods: one, six and 12 months postdischarge from the hospital. The semi-structured interviews were based on insights gained from a literature review. The transcripts were subjected to content analysis. Results., Analysis of the data revealed seven major categories: physical deterioration, cognitive changes, perceived social support, dependency, contact with the doctor, confrontation with mortality and uncertainty surrounding having a shock. Anxiety, uncertainty, disappointment, frustration, unexpected barriers, acceptance of and dependency on the implantable cardioverter defibrillator played a major role in the lives of implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipients. Well-being improved throughout the year. During the first months after discharge from the hospital the focus was on regaining physical health. During the early postimplantation period both the implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipient and family members had adapted to the situation. Reflection on the impact and consequences of the cardiac arrest was reported more often in the late postimplantation period. Conclusions., Content analysis is a resourceful approach giving answers to questions that have hardly been addressed within the domain of cardiology. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipients face a complex first year, especially the first 6 months. Cognitive deterioration and confrontation with mortality are problems that need to be researched further. Relevance to clinical practice., Caregivers are able to explain to future patients what they can expect in the first year after implantation. Caregivers may become more receptive to physical, psychological and social limitations and to emotional and social problems that occur in implantable cardioverter defibrillator recipients, enabling them to act upon them. [source] Professional development in inquiry-based science for elementary teachers of diverse student groupsJOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN SCIENCE TEACHING, Issue 10 2004Okhee Lee As part of a larger project aimed at promoting science and literacy for culturally and linguistically diverse elementary students, this study has two objectives: (a) to describe teachers' initial beliefs and practices about inquiry-based science and (b) to examine the impact of the professional development intervention (primarily through instructional units and teacher workshops) on teachers' beliefs and practices related to inquiry-based science. The research involved 53 third- and fourth-grade teachers at six elementary schools in a large urban school district. At the end of the school year, teachers reported enhanced knowledge of science content and stronger beliefs about the importance of science instruction with diverse student groups, although their actual practices did not change significantly. Based on the results of this first year of implementation as part of a 3-year longitudinal design, implications for professional development and further research are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Res Sci Teach 41: 1021,1043, 2004 [source] Psoralen and ultraviolet A and narrow-band ultraviolet B in inducing stability in vitiligo, assessed by vitiligo disease activity score: an open prospective comparative studyJOURNAL OF THE EUROPEAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY & VENEREOLOGY, Issue 10 2007A Bhatnagar Abstract Background Vitiligo is a common pigmentary disorder with great cosmetic and psychological morbidity and an unpredictable course. No treatment available is a definitive cure. Systemic psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) has been the mainstay of treatment. Narrow-band UVB (NBUVB) was later introduced. In this study, we have compared the phototherapy modalities PUVA and NBUVB in inducing stability in vitiligo, assessed by using vitiligo disease activity score (VIDA), for the first time. Aims To investigate the position of NBUVB vis-à-vis PUVA in terms of stability achieved during therapy as indicated by the VIDA scores. Subjects and methods It was an open, prospective study of 50 patients divided equally in PUVA and NBUVB groups. The study period was from January 2004 to June 2005. This study was done as a part of a larger project to compare the efficacy of mentioned modalities in degree of repigmentation. Results In the NBUVB group, disease activity was present in 40% patients before commencement of therapy, which was reduced to 16% at the end of therapy (statistically significant, P = 0.049). In the PUVA group, similar figures were 20% and 16%, respectively. In the NBUVB group, 50% of patients whose disease was active prior to commencement of therapy had less than 50% repigmentation, whereas an equal number of patients had repigmentation of more than 50%. Almost an equal number of stable patients had less than and more than 50% repigmentation. In the PUVA group, 4 of the 5 (80%) patients who had active disease had less than 50% repigmentation, whereas only 1 patient (20%) with active disease obtained more than 50% repigmentation. The time to attain stability was 3.6 ± 2.1 months in the NBUVB group and 3.22 ± 3.1 months in the PUVA group. Eight of the 10 (80%) patients with unstable disease in the NBUVB group achieved stability, whereas 2 of the 5 (40%) patients of similar pre-treatment status in the PUVA group achieved stability. Conclusion NBUVB was in a more statistically advantageous position vis-à-vis PUVA, in respect to stability achieved and efficacy in both active and stable disease in a comparable time period. [source] Predictors of Success in Individuals with Learning Disabilities: A Qualitative Analysis of a 20-Year Longitudinal StudyLEARNING DISABILITIES RESEARCH & PRACTICE, Issue 4 2003Roberta J. Goldberg The research described here is part of a larger longitudinal project tracing the lives of a group of individuals with learning disabilities who attended the Frostig Center more than 20 years ago. The purpose of the larger project has been to identify variables that predict successful outcomes for adults with learning disabilities. This article focuses on the qualitative findings obtained using an ethnographic approach to analyzing in-depth interviews with participants. Six previously identified "success attributes" (self-awareness, proactivity, perseverance, appropriate goal setting, effective use of social support systems, and emotional stability/emotional coping strategies) were further defined. Using qualitative analysis, significant components of the success attributes that differentiated the successful from unsuccessful groups were identified, and changes over time were revealed. In addition, the following new themes were identified: (1) the learning disability exerted a critical influence across the entire lifespan; (2) there were differences in participants' family functioning; and (3) there were differences in participants' social relationships. Support for the salience of the success attributes and the additional themes to the participants is given in the form of direct quotations from the corpus of interview transcripts. Qualitative methodologies are stressed throughout the study for the purpose of obtaining an "insider's view" of LD. [source] Primary and secondary prevention of behavior difficulties: Developing a data-informed problem-solving model to guide decision making at a school-wide levelPSYCHOLOGY IN THE SCHOOLS, Issue 1 2007Ruth A. Ervin This article focuses on the development and implementation of primary and secondary behavior supports at a schoolwide level. The approach described is consistent with previous efforts to address behavior at a systems level (e.g., G. Sugai, R.H. Horner, & F.M. Gresham, 2002). In this article, we illustrate this process through a school-based example. This example is drawn from a larger project in which area regional school-district consultants and university researchers partnered with four elementary schools in an effort to enhance each school's capacity to implement evidence-based practice and decisions at primary (i.e., universal or school-wide), secondary (i.e., targeted efforts for selected groups of students and/or settings), and tertiary (i.e., individual-student) levels to promote behavioral competence. The project incorporated promising strategies and tools designed to promote and sustain the use of evidence-based practices and data-driven problem solving. Continuous progress monitoring of systemic variables and student behavioral outcomes (e.g., office-referral data) helped to guide systemic reform efforts. Reductions were noted in the number of student discipline problems, and improvements were noted in critical features of school-wide effective behavior support at a systems level. Results are discussed with an emphasis on implications for practice, lessons learned from this project, and directions for additional research. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tvedte The crystal structure of the title compound, C13H15N3O3·C3H7NO, was determined as part of a larger project focusing on creatinine derivatives as potential pharmaceuticals. The molecule is essentially planar, in part because of intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Inversion-related pairs of molecules result from intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The , systems of 2-amino-5-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-1-methylimidazol-4(5H)-one and an inversion-related molecule overlap slightly, indicating a small amount of ,,, stacking. Bond lengths, angles and torsion angles are consistent with similar structures, except in the imidazolone ring near the doubly bonded C atom, where significant differences occur. [source] Colonialism and Health Policy Affecting Workers in Sri Lanka's Plantation SectorANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK REVIEW, Issue 3 2006Ramani Hettiarachchi Abstract One of the major problems that European colonizers faced in Asia was the reluctance of indigenous agricultural societies to respond to their large-scale labor requirement. This article focuses on plantation owners and managers in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) during the height of nineteenth-century coffee plantation production, and the strategies they used to control indentured workers from India in Ceylon. In particular, caste distinctions were perpetuated among the workforce; this legacy has implications for social life on the estates in current Sri Lanka, engaged in an ethnic conflict between the political minority Tamil and political majority Sinhala populations. This article focuses especially on health and sanitation issues for workers during the colonial plantation era, and the need for government intervention,that was not forthcoming,on behalf of the workers. This research is part of a larger project (cf. Hettiarachchi 1989) drawing on the archival methods of history and the ethnographic methods of anthropology to document conditions for plantation workers. Attention to historical strategies of worker control can provide insights into the current relationship between states, low-wage labor forces, and health care policies. Feminist analysis needs to take on the manner in which the history of images is conserved and presented through museum display and the curatorial mode that informs art-historical study by master, image, style and period. To track the political unconscious of the image with all its ambivalence, the essay draws on Freudian aesthetics in the study of a photographic archive of fragments and details of Antonio Canova's Three Graces, which are set against a counter-archive of work by artists who are women exploring bodies, sexuality and time. [source] Phenological patterns in monsoon rainforests in the Northern Territory, AustraliaAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2002Christine Susanne Bach Abstract Monsoon rainforests occur as scattered patches within a landscape dominated by eucalypt savannas across the wet,dry tropics of northern Australia. This study formed part of a larger project that investigated the interactions between frugivores and monsoon rainforest patches in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Phenological patterns in a set of 12 wet monsoon forests (WMF) and four dry monsoon forests (DMF) were examined by monitoring individuals of more than 100 species over 30 months. Phenological patterns of both WMF and DMF were closely related to the strongly seasonal climate. Leaf flush occurred before the onset of the wet season in WMF, and coincided with the onset of the wet in DMF. Major flowering peaks coincided with leaf flush in both forest types. Fruiting was concentrated in the wet season in both forest types, but fruiting peaks of WMF and DMF were separated by 3,4 months. Variations in fruiting patterns among forest types, patches, seasons and groupings of plant species (based on life form and ecological positioning) provide a mosaic of food resources for frugivores. This has important implications for the conservation and maintenance of the frugivore,rainforest system in northern Australia. [source] The personal experience of juvenile Huntington's disease: an interpretative phenomenological analysis of parents' accounts of the primary features of a rare genetic conditionCLINICAL GENETICS, Issue 6 2006Section Editor: Barbara Bowles Biesecker, email: barbarab@mail.nih.gov There has been a paucity of research into the psychosocial impact of juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD) on the child and the family. The study reported here is part of larger project that aimed to address this and investigate the social and health care needs of those affected by JHD. Ten semistructured interviews with the main caregiver(s) were carried out and were analyzed using the qualitative methodology interpretative phenomenological analysis. The main themes arising from the analysis are reported here: first becoming aware something is wrong; physical symptoms; speech and communication difficulties; behavioral problems; a slow but relentless process. These are discussed in relation to extant literature. We hope the article will be helpful to clinicians working with families where a child is affected by JHD and also contribute to the general literature on understanding symptoms in childhood illness.
