    Corporate Governance in Germany: the move to shareholder value

    The paper offers an inside view of the German corporate governance model, based on interviews with over 100 members of supervisory- (Aufsichtsrat) and executive-boards (Vorstand) of major German corporations. The traditional supervisory board with its large size of 20 members, one half elected by the employees, reflects the strong consensus orientation of the German corporate world. This system worked well in times of long innovation cycles and largely separate, national capital markets.     CO2 Laser Treatment of Epidermal Nevi: Long-Term Success

    background. Epidermal nevi have been notoriously difficult to treat due to their large size and often conspicuous location. Variable results have been obtained with different laser treatments, and scarring and/or incomplete removal is typical after excisional or other destructive modalities. objective. To outline the successful use of a short-pulsed CO2 laser in the long-term eradication of epidermal nevi in three patients. methods. Three females (ages 15,19) presented with extensive grouped verrucous papules and plaques on the face, trunk, and extremities. A pulsed CO2 laser was used to vaporize the lesions using a 500 mJ pulse energy, 3 mm spotsize, and 7 watts of power. results. All lesions healed without incident. No lesional recurrence was observed 10 to 13 months after treatment except in one small area on the ankle in one patient. conclusions. Carbon dioxide laser vaporization of epidermal nevi provides good clinical effect and offers unique advantages for the treatment of these lesions, including effective intraoperative hemostasis with excellent lesional visualization. It is also possible to treat widespread areas in one laser treatment session. While the results of this series clearly show the benefit of CO2 laser treatment, epidermal nevi may not always respond so favorably, due in part to the variability in their depths of involvement.     Male-biased size dimorphism in ichneumonine wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) , the role of sexual selection for large male size

    Abstract., 1.,Sexual differences in body size are expected to evolve when selection on female and male sizes favours different optima. 2.,Insects have typically female-biased size dimorphism that is usually explained by the strong fecundity advantage of larger size in females. However, numerous exceptions to this general pattern have led to the search for selective pressures favouring larger size in males. 3.,In this study, the benefits of large size were investigated in males of four species of ichneumonine wasps, a species-rich group of parasitoids, many representatives of which exhibit male-biased size dimorphism. 4.,Mating behaviour of all ichneumonine wasps are characterised by pre-copulatory struggles, in the course of which males attempt to override female reluctance to mate. A series of laboratory trials was conducted to study the determinants of male mating success. 5.,A tendency was found for larger males as well as those in better condition to be more successful in achieving copulations. Size dimorphism of the species studied, mostly male-biased in hind tibia length but female-biased in body weight, indicates that sexual selection in males favours longer bodies and appendages rather than larger weight. 6.,The qualitative similarity of the mating patterns suggests that sexual selection cannot completely explain the considerable among-species differences in sexual size dimorphism. 7.,The present study cautions against using various size indices as equivalents for calculating sexual size dimorphism. 8.,It is suggested that female reluctance in ichneumonine wasps functions as a mechanism of female mate assessment.     Movement of two grassland butterflies in the same habitat network: the role of adult resources and size of the study area

    Abstract. 1., Movement patterns of two butterfly species (meadow brown Maniola jurtina L. and scarce copper Lycaenae virgaureae L.) were studied in a 172 ha area within a landscape with a high percentage of suitable habitats for mark,release,recapture experiments. 2., Adult resource density, but not patch size or larval food plant abundance, influenced the numbers and the fractions of residents, emigrants, and immigrants. 3., Differences between species were observed in movement frequency and maximum distances moved but not in mean distances moved. 4., The scarce copper showed much greater movement ability than expected from the results of published studies. This is believed to be a result of the comparatively large size of the study area and the high cover of suitable habitat (>50%). 5., The mean and maximum distances travelled by butterflies reflected differences in the size of the study area.     Fitness and body size in mature odonates

    Summary The relationship between body size and fitness components in odonates was examined using a meta-analysis of 33 published studies. There was a positive and significant overall effect of body size on mating rate and lifetime mating success among males. There was also a weaker but still significant positive effect of body size on survivorship of males. The relationship between body size, mating rate, longevity, and lifetime mating success differed significantly between males of territorial and nonterritorial species. The effect of body size was significant for all fitness components in territorial species but significant only for longevity and lifetime mating success in nonterritorial species. Effect sizes appeared to be strongest on longevity in both sexes, and on male mating rate in territorial species. Other effect sizes, even when significant, were small. Despite a much smaller data set, female fitness also increased significantly with body size. Both clutch size and longevity showed a significant positive relationship with body size. These results suggest that there is a general fitness benefit to large size in odonates. Nevertheless, significant heterogeneity is apparent in this effect, which can be attributed to sex, mating system, and fitness component. Finally, these analyses point to inadequacies in the current data that need further study before the potentially rich patterns in size effects on fitness can be explored more thoroughly. [source]


    Invasion success: does size really matter?

    The recent paper by Roy et al. (2001) presents a compelling relationship between range limit shifts, climatic fluctuations, and body size for marine bivalves in the fossil record. However, their extension of body size as a correlate for contemporary marine bivalve introductions is problematic and requires further scrutiny. Unlike their analysis of the fossil assemblage, the approach used for contemporary invasions does not adequately control for dispersal mechanism (vector) or source region. First, their analysis included mariculture species, intentionally introduced because of their large size, creating a vector-specific bias. Second, successful invaders from multiple source regions (Northern Hemisphere) were compared with potential invaders from a single source region (north-eastern Pacific), leaving both source and vector as uncontrolled variables. We present an analysis of body size for bivalve introductions from a single vector and source region, indicating no correlation between body size and invasion success when eliminating intentional introduction, source region and transport vector as confounding factors.     Evaluation of the effects of catch-and-release angling on the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of the Ponoi River, Kola Peninsula, Russian Federation

    Abstract , We studied the effects of catch-and-release fishing upon the Ponoi River's Atlantic salmon populations. The Ponoi River is located on the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation, and has recently been developed for sports fishing. Angler exploitation rates are estimated to range from 10.4% to 19% of the river's salmon, thus the possibility of significant levels of post-release mortality is of concern. We radio-tracked fish caught and released by anglers in 1995 and 1996. Despite our simple equipment and the large size of the river, we were able to relocate most fish. These fish had high rates of survival, and anglers recaptured about 11% of them per year a second time. This is very similar to the recapture rates observed for Floy-tagged fish released in an angler-based mark-recapture assessment. We also held 62 angled fish for 24 hours in a live cage to evaluate rates of delayed mortality. Only one of the 62 fish died, and it was heavily scarred with gillnet marks. Most fish that are fatally stressed by angling die within 24 h (e.g., Booth et al. 1995). In 1996, up to 10% of our Floy-tagged fish were angled and released twice, and about 0.5% were angled and released three times. No significant biases were detected in the post-angling movement patterns of these fish. The multiple captures and lack of movement bias suggest that fish behavior was little altered by the angling experience. Nine fish Floy tagged prior to spawning have been recovered as typical emaciated kelts. Three were killed, and a post mortem exam showed all had spawned. Parr numbers at all monitored sites have been steadily increasing since the advent of catch-and-release fishing.     NCS-1 differentially regulates growth cone and somata calcium channels in Lymnaea neurons

    Abstract Local voltage-gated calcium channels, which regulate intracellular Ca2+ levels by allowing Ca2+ influx, play an important role in guiding and shaping growth cones, and in regulating the outgrowth and branching of neurites. Therefore, elucidating the mechanisms that regulate the biophysical properties of whole-cell calcium currents in the growth cones and somata of growing neurons is important to improving our understanding of neuronal development and regeneration. In this study, taking advantage of the large size of the pedal A (PeA) neurons in Lymnaea stagnalis, we compared the biophysical properties of somata and growth cone whole-cell calcium channel currents using Ba2+ and Ca2+ as current carriers. We found that somata and growth cone currents exhibit similar high-voltage activation properties. However, Ba2+ and Ca2+ currents in growth cones and somata are differentially affected by a dominant-negative peptide containing the C-terminal amino acid sequence of neuronal calcium sensor-1 (NCS-1). The peptide selectively reduces the peak and sustained components of current densities and the slope conductance in growth cones, and shifts the reversal potential of the growth cone currents to more hyperpolarized voltages. In contrast, the peptide had no significant effect on the somata calcium channels. Thus, we conclude that NCS-1 differentially modulates Ca2+ currents in the somata and growth cones of regenerating neurons, and may serve as a key regulator to facilitate the growth cone calcium channel activity.     RAPID GROWTH RESULTS IN INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO PREDATION IN MENIDIA MENIDIA

    Abstract Several recent studies have demonstrated that rapid growth early in life leads to decreased physiological performance. Nearly all involved experiments over short time periods (<1 day) to control for potentially confounding effects of size. This approach, however, neglects the benefits an individual accrues by growing. The net effect of growth can only be evaluated over a longer interval in which rapidly growing individuals are allowed the time required to attain the expected benefits of large size. We used two populations of Menidia menidia with disparate intrinsic growth rates to address this issue. We compared growth and survivorship among populations subject to predation in mesocosms under ambient light and temperature conditions for a period of up to 30 days to address two questions: Do the growth rates of fish in these populations respond differently to the presence of predators? Is the previously demonstrated survival cost of growth counterbalanced by the benefits of increased size? We found that growth was insensitive to predation risk: neither population appeared to modify growth rates in response to predation levels. Moreover, the fast-growing population suffered significantly higher mortality throughout the trials despite being 40% larger than the slow-growing population at the experiment's end. These results confirm that the costs of rapid growth extend over prolonged intervals and are not ameliorated merely by the attainment of large size. [source]


    Rapid evolution in crop-weed hybrids under artificial selection for divergent life histories

    Abstract When species hybridize, offspring typically exhibit reduced fitness and maladapted phenotypes. This situation has biosafety implications regarding the unintended spread of novel transgenes, and risk assessments of crop-wild hybrids often assume that poorly adapted hybrid progeny will not evolve adaptive phenotypes. We explored the evolutionary potential of early generation hybrids using nontransgenic wild and cultivated radish (Raphanus raphanistrum, Raphanus sativus) as a model system. We imposed four generations of selection for two weedy traits , early flowering or large size , and measured responses in a common garden in Michigan, USA. Under selection for early flowering, hybrids evolved to flower as early as wild lineages, which changed little. These early-flowering hybrids also recovered wild-type pollen fertility, suggesting a genetic correlation that could accelerate the loss of crop traits when a short life cycle is advantageous. Under selection for large size at reproduction, hybrids evolved longer leaves faster than wild lineages, a potentially advantageous phenotype under longer growing seasons. Although early generation hybrid offspring have reduced fitness, our findings provide novel support for rapid adaptation in crop-wild hybrid populations. Biosafety risk assessment programs should consider the possibility of rapid evolution of weedy traits from early generations of seemingly unfit crop-wild hybrids. [source]


    APPLIED ISSUES: Size-dependent mortality of migratory silver eels at a hydropower plant, and implications for escapement to the sea

    Summary 1.,The European eel population has decreased drastically during recent decades, and new EU-legislation calls for measures to change this negative trend. This decline has been attributed to a number of factors, including habitat fragmentation by structural barriers that prevent eels moving between freshwater and the sea. The success of downstream migrating adult silver eels migrating past a hydroelectric plant (HEP) in Sweden was examined by radio-telemetry, and the results were considered in a historical context by analysing catch data from the river for 1957,2006. 2.,The choice of routes and passage success were quantified for three treatment groups and one control group of silver eels. The first treatment, the reservoir group (n = 50), was released into the reservoir upstream of the HEP, and these fish could proceed downstream by passing through the HEP (20 mm rack and turbines) or by entering the spill gates into the former channel, bypassing the HEP. The second treatment group (inside rack, n = 15) was released downstream of the 20-mm rack and had to pass through the turbines to continue migration to the sea. The third treatment group consisted of dead radio-tagged eels (n = 6) that were released into the turbines to study the extent of drifting by dead individuals. Finally, the control group (n = 50) was released downstream of the HEP to test for effects of confounding factors. 3.,Most live individuals displayed migratory behaviour and continued to proceed downstream after release. Only 8% of the fish released in the reservoir or downstream of the HEP (control) did not migrate. The probability of reaching the next HEP, 24 km further downstream, was high for the control group (96%) and the reservoir-released individuals that passed the HEP via the spill gates and the former channel (83%). Survival was low and size-dependent for the individuals that passed the turbines (40%) and even lower for the individuals that had to pass through the rack and the turbines (26%). The overall passage success for eels released in the reservoir was 30%, including both routes. 4.,Annual catch data from 1957 to 2006 showed that the number of eels in the River Ätran has decreased. Despite this decrease, escapement biomass has remained unchanged, because of the fact that the mean size of eels has doubled. Passage data from 2007 show that changes in size and abundance have resulted in a reduction of relative escapement to the sea to values that are 21,24% of what they were in 1957,66. However, this low level of escapement could potentially be rectified if appropriate measures facilitating HEP passage are successfully implemented, since the potential escapement biomass in the river, owing to the large size of the eels, has changed little since the 1950s.     Dynamic models allowing for flexibility in complex life histories accurately predict timing of metamorphosis and antipredator strategies of prey

    Summary 1.,The development of antipredator defences in the larval stage of animals with complex life cycles is likely to be affected by costs associated with creating and maintaining such defences because of their impact on the timing of maturation or metamorphosis. 2.,Various theoretical treatments have suggested that investment in defence should both increase or decrease with increasing resource availability, but a recent model predicts investment in defences should be highest at intermediate resource level and predator density. 3.,Previous models of investment in defence and timing of metamorphosis provide a poor match to empirical data. Here we develop a dynamic state-dependent model of investment in behavioural and morphological defences that enables us to allow flexibility in investment in defences over development, the timing of metamorphosis and the size of the organism at metamorphosis that were absent from previous theory. 4.,We show that the inclusion of this flexibility results in different predictions to those of the fixed investment approach used previously, especially when we allow metamorphosis to occur at the optimal time and state for the organism. 5.,Under these more flexible conditions, we predict that morphological defences should be insensitive to resource level whilst behavioural defences should either increase or decrease with increasing resources depending on the predation risk and the magnitude of the fitness benefits of large size at metamorphosis. 6.,Our work provides a formal framework in which we might progress in the study of how the use of antipredator defences is affected by their costs. Most of the predictions of our model in are in good accord with empirical results, and can be understood in terms of the underlying biological assumptions. The reasons why simpler models failed to match empirical observations can be explained, and our predictions that are a poor match help to target the circumstances which warrant future study.     What limits insect fecundity?

    Body size-, oviposition in a butterfly, temperature-dependent egg maturation
    Summary 1Large female insects usually have high potential fecundity. Therefore selection should favour an increase in body size given that these females get opportunities to realize their potential advantage by maturing and laying more eggs. However, ectotherm physiology is strongly temperature-dependent, and activities are carried out sufficiently only within certain temperature ranges. Thus it remains unclear if the fecundity advantage of a large size is fully realized in natural environments, where thermal conditions are limiting. 2Insect fecundity might be limited by temperature at two levels; first eggs need to mature, and then the female needs time for strategic ovipositing of the egg. Since a female cannot foresee the number of oviposition opportunities that she will encounter on a given day, the optimal rate of egg maturation will be governed by trade-offs associated with egg- and time-limited oviposition. As females of different sizes will have different amounts of body reserves, size-dependent allocation trade-offs between the mother's condition and her egg production might be expected. 3In the temperate butterfly Pararge aegeria, the time and temperature dependence of oviposition and egg maturation, and the interrelatedness of these two processes were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments, allowing a decoupling of the time budgets for the respective processes. 4The results show that realized fecundity of this species can be limited by both the temperature dependence of egg maturation and oviposition under certain thermal regimes. Furthermore, rates of oviposition and egg maturation seemed to have regulatory effects upon each other. Early reproductive output was correlated with short life span, indicating a cost of reproduction. Finally, large females matured more eggs than small females when deprived of oviposition opportunities. Thus, the optimal allocation of resources to egg production seems dependent on female size. 5This study highlights the complexity of processes underlying rates of egg maturation and oviposition in ectotherms under natural conditions. We further discuss the importance of temperature variation for egg- vs. time-limited fecundity and the consequences for the evolution of female body size in insects. [source]


    Studies in Urban Ecology: the First Wave of Biological Invasion by Pistacia chinensis in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia

    Biological invasions by deliberately introduced organisms seriously compromise the integrity of ecosystems, but their early stages have seldom been documented, especially in urban contexts. Since the 1940s, the small Asian tree Pistacia chinensis has been widely planted in streets and gardens in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia, where it makes a major contribution to the autumn colours that are exploited to promote the city. Numerous wild plants are now becoming established in and near Armidale. This ongoing biological invasion may have been accelerated by the large size of the initial (planted) population, and by the presence of efficient avian seed dispersers. It is now at the stage of the first wild generation reaching reproductive maturity. While it is probably still possible to halt the invasion, various human factors appear to make this an unlikely prospect. [source]


    Glial cells promote dendrite formation and the reception of synaptic input in Purkinje cells from postnatal mice

    Abstract Previous studies suggest that glial cells contribute to synaptogenesis in specific neurons from the postnatal CNS. Here, we studied whether this is true for Purkinje cells (PCs), which represent a unique neuronal cell type due to their large size, massive synaptic input, and high vulnerability. Using new glia-free cultures enriched in PCs from postnatal mice we show that these neurons survived and grew, but displayed only low levels of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic activity. Coculture with glial cells strongly enhanced the frequency and size of spontaneous and miniature excitatory synaptic currents as well as neurite growth and branching. Immunocytochemical staining for microtubule-associated protein 2- (MAP2-) positive neurites revealed impaired dendrite formation in PCs under glia-free conditions, which can explain the absence of synaptic activity. Glial signals strongly enhanced dendritogenesis in PCs and thus their ability to receive excitatory synaptic input from granule cells (GCs). The enhancement of dendrite formation was mimicked by glia-conditioned medium (GCM), whereas the increase in synaptic activity required physical presence of glia. This indicated that dendrite development is necessary but not sufficient for PCs to receive excitatory synaptic input and that synaptogenesis requires additional signals. The level of inhibitory synaptic activity was low even in cocultures due to a low incidence of inhibitory interneurons. Taken together, our results reinforce the idea that glial cells promote synaptogenesis in specific neuronal cell types. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]


    Calcium signaling in invertebrate glial cells

    Abstract Calcium signaling studies in invertebrate glial cells have been performed mainly in the nervous systems of the medicinal leech (Hirudo medicinalis) and the sphinx moth Manduca sexta. The main advantages of studing glial cells in invertebrate nervous systems are the large size of invertebrate glial cells and their easy accessibility for optical and electrophysiological recordings. Glial cells in both insects and annelids express voltage-gated calcium channels and, in the case of leech glial cells, calcium-permeable neurotransmitter receptors, which allow calcium influx as one major source for cytosolic calcium transients. Calcium release from intracellular stores can be induced by metabotropic receptor activation in leech glial cells, but appears to play a minor role in calcium signaling. In glial cells of the antennal lobe of Manduca, voltage-gated calcium signaling changes during postembryonic development and is essential for the migration of the glial cells, a key step in axon guidance and in stabilization of the glomerular structures that are characteristic of primary olfactory centers. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     Abstract Straightforward detectable Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene rearrangements, such as deletions or duplications involving an entire exon or more, are involved in about 70% of dystrophinopathies. In the remaining 30% a variety of point mutations or "small" mutations are suspected. Due to their diversity and to the large size and complexity of the DMD gene, these point mutations are difficult to detect. To overcome this diagnostic issue, we developed and optimized a routine muscle biopsy,based diagnostic strategy. The mutation detection rate is almost as high as 100% and mutations were identified in all patients for whom the diagnosis of DMD and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) was clinically suspected and further supported by the detection on Western blot of quantitative and/or qualitative dystrophin protein abnormalities. Here we report a total of 124 small mutations including 11 nonsense and frameshift mutations detected in BMD patients. In addition to a comprehensive assessment of muscular phenotypes that takes into account consequences of mutations on the expression of the dystrophin mRNA and protein, we provide and discuss genomic, mRNA, and protein data that pinpoint molecular mechanisms underlying BMD phenotypes associated with nonsense and frameshift mutations.     ATM mutations on distinct SNP and STR haplotypes in ataxia-telangiectasia patients of differing ethnicities reveal ancestral founder effects,

    Abstract Due to the large size (150 kb) of the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene and the existence of over 400 mutations, identifying mutations in patients with ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is labor intensive. We compared the SNP and STR haplotypes of A-T patients from varying ethnicities who were carrying common ATM mutations. We used SSCP to determine SNP haplotypes. To our surprise, all of the most common ATM mutations in our large multiethnic cohort were associated with specific SNP haplotypes, whereas the STR haplotypes varied, suggesting that ATM mutations predated STR haplotypes but not SNP haplotypes. We conclude that these frequently observed ATM mutations are not hot spots, but have occurred only once and spread with time to different ethnic populations. More generally, a combination of SNP and STR haplotyping could be used as a screening strategy for identifying mutations in other large genes by first determining the ancestral SNP and STR haplotypes in order to identify specific founder mutations.     Controlled Growth Factor Delivery for Tissue Engineering

    Abstract Growth factors play a crucial role in information transfer between cells and their microenvironment in tissue engineering and regeneration. They initiate their action by binding to specific receptors on the surface of target cells and the chemical identity, concentration, duration, and context of these growth factors contain information that dictates cell fate. Hence, the importance of exogenous delivery of these molecules in tissue engineering is unsurprising, considering their importance for tissue regeneration. However, the short half-lives of growth factors, their relatively large size, slow tissue penetration, and their potential toxicity at high systemic levels, suggest that conventional routes of administration are unlikely to be effective. In this review, we provide an overview of the design criteria for growth factor delivery vehicles with respect to the growth factor itself and the microenvironment for delivery.     Ingestion patterns and daily energy intake on a sugary diet: the Red Lory Eos bornea and the Malachite Sunbird Nectarinia famosa

    This study examines whether nectarivorous birds regulate daily energy intake as proposed by Lloyd in 1991. Two Old World nectarivorous species, a large non-passerine, the Red Lory Eos bornea, and a small passerine, the Malachite Sunbird Nectarinia famosa, were fed 0.25 mol/1 sucrose (9%), 0.73 mol/1 sucrose [24%] or 0.73 mol/1 glucose in separate laboratory trials to determine hourly and overall daily rate of sugar intake and consumption. Overall daily energy intake rates of the Malachite Sunbird and the Red Lory support the hypothesis of regulated energy intake for nectarivorous Old World birds. However, the species differ in their ingestion patterns through the day. The Red Lory ingests large volumes initially, regardless of sugar type. This is possibly a consequence of their large size and having a crop in which food can be stored. The Malachite Sunbird showed more regular hourly consumption through the day, and no change in mass during the day. Intake rates of both species were greater on lower sugar concentrations. [source]


    Specific developmental gene silencing in the honey bee using a homeobox motif

    Abstract Manipulating the expression of genes in species that are not currently used as genetic models will provide comparative insights into the evolution of gene functions. However the experimental tools in doing so are limited in species that have not served as models for genetic studies. We have examined the effects of double stranded RNA (dsRNA) in the honey bee, an insect with considerably basic scientific interest. dsRNA derived from a 300 bp stretch of the E30 homeobox motif was injected into honey bee embryos at the anterior pole in the preblastoderm stage. We found that the dsRNA fragment successfully disrupted the protein expression of the target gene throughout the whole embryo. The disruption caused deficient phenotypes similar to known loss of function mutants of Drosophila engrailed, whereas embryos injected with nonsense dsRNA showed no abnormalities. We show that the large size of the honey bee egg (D: 0.3 mm, L: 1.6 mm) and the long preblastoderm stage (11,12 h) can be exploited to generate embryos with partial disruption of gene function, which may provide an elegant alternative to classical chimeric analyses. This is the first report of targeted disruption of gene function in the honey bee, and the results prove that the chosen target gene is a functional ortholog to engrailed in Drosophila. [source]

    This article provides a microfoundation for the rise in optimism that seems to precede market crashes. Small, young markets are more likely to experience stock-price run-ups and crashes. We use a Zeira,Rob type of model in which demand size is uncertain. Optimism then grows rationally if traders' prior distribution over market size has a decreasing hazard. Such prior beliefs are appropriate if most new markets are duds and only a few reach a large size. The crash occurs when capacity outstrips demand. As an illustration, for the period 1971,2001 we fit the model to the Telecom sector. [source]


    Spontaneous rupture of non-parasitic hepatic cyst

    Summary Intrahepatic cysts are generally classified as congenital, traumatic, infectious or neoplastic. Non-parasitic hepatic cysts (NPHCs) include simple cysts and adult polycystic liver disease in which the liver is diffusely occupied by cysts. NPHCs usually reach a large size before causing symptoms, unless a complication such as rupture, bleeding, infection, obstructive jaundice or neoplastic transformation occurs. We report the case of a 67-year-old man with spontaneous rupture of simple liver cyst. The clinical pictures and the unusual ultrasound features of this rare condition are discussed. [source]


    Adding insult to injury: opportunistic treponemal disease in a scalping survivor

    Abstract Although the taking of scalps is arguably a perimortem trophy-taking behaviour, cases of scalping survival are occasionally reported in the historical documents of the American Colonial Period and the 19th century westward expansion. Survival cases are also detected in pre-Columbian bioarchaeological contexts. Although scalp avulsion injuries can heal without complication, often the process is compromised by secondary osteomyelitis, usually attributable to environmentally ever-present Staphylococcal or Streptococcal bacteria. A scalping survivor case from the late prehistoric (AD 1200,1600) Hampton site (40RH41) of East Tennessee unusually displays infectious sequelae in the area denuded by scalp avulsion which are pathognomonic for treponemal disease (caries sicca, stellate scarring). This infection is probably a reflection of the easy opportunity afforded by the large size of the wound bed, poor post-trauma hygiene, and direct inoculation of the diploë by a ubiquitous Treponema.     Life Cycle, Feeding and Production of Isoptena serricornis(Pictet, 1841) (Plecoptera, Chloroperlidae)

    Abstract Some aspects of the biology and ecology (life cycle, feeding and production) of a population of Isoptena serricornis in the Rudava River (Slovakia) are studied, reported and discussed. The life cycle is annual, with slow growth in autumn-winter and fast growth in late summer and spring. The growth decreased two weeks before the Fall Equinox and increased two weeks after the Spring Equinox. The flight period spans from the end of May to the beginning of July. The presence of large sand particles in the gut of all studied nymphs is of note, and indicates that I. serricornis acts as a deposit-collector species. Nymphal food is principally composed of detritus, unicellular organisms and, in nymphs of intermediate or large size, Chironomidae larvae. Adult food is composed fundamentally of different types of pollen grains. Males usually have lower food content than females. Annual production of this species (,694,750 mg · m,2) is very high in relation to other previously studied Chloroperlidae. This is probably largely responsible for I. serricornis being one of the most abundant components of the macroinvertebrate community in its habitat in the Rudava River. A negative correlation between production and temperature was observed. [source]


    A family of thioxanthato ruthenium and osmium aryls

    The title complexes of type M(RL2)(PPh3)2(CO)(S2CSEt) (2a: M = Ru; 2b: M = Os) have been synthesized in excellent yields by reacting M(RL1)(PPh3)2(CO)X (1a: M = Ru, × = Cl; 1b: M = Os, × = Br) with potassium ethyl thioxanthate and have been characterized with the help of spectral and electrochemical data. The RL2 ligand in 2 is the imine-phenol tautomer of N-C6H4R(p)-4-methylsalicylaldimine (R = Me, MeO, Cl) coordinated at the carbanionic-C2 atom only while RL1 in 1 is the iminium-phenolato tautomer chelated via carbanionic-C2 and phenolato-O atoms. The synthetic reaction is thus attended with tautomerization of the Schiff base ligand. It is also associated with a rotation of the ligand by ,180° around the M,C bond in order to exclude steric repulsion. These features have been revealed by structure determination of 2a (R = Me). The metallated aldimine ring is found to be highly noncoplanar (dihedral angle ,40°) with the thioxanthate chelate ring due to steric repulsion originating from the relatively large size of the sulfur atom. This phenomenon, which is absent in both the precursor 1 (R = Me) and in the carboxylate analogue Ru(MeL2)(PPh3)2(CO)(O2CMe), 7, has distinctive effects on bond parameters of 2a (R = Me). Thus the two Ru,P bonds in 2a (R = Me) differ in length by as much as 0.06 Å. The thioxanthate 2 is thermodynamically more stable than the precursor 1 as well as the carboxylate 7. Accordingly, both of these are irreversibly transformed to 2a (R = Me) upon treatment with thioxanthate. [source]


    Size-dependent predation risk in tree-feeding insects with different colouration strategies: a field experiment

    Summary 1. Body size is positively correlated with fecundity in various animals, but the factors that counterbalance the resulting selection pressure towards large size are difficult to establish. Positively size-dependent predation risk has been proposed as a selective factor potentially capable of balancing the fecundity advantage of large size. 2. To construct optimality models of insect body size, realistic estimates of size-dependent predation rates are necessary. Moreover, prey traits such as colouration should be considered, as they may substantially alter the relationship between body size and mortality risk. 3. To quantify mortality patterns, we conducted field experiments in which we exposed cryptic and conspicuous artificial larvae of different sizes to bird predators, and recorded the incidence of bird attacks. 4. The average daily mortality rate was estimated to vary between 4% and 10%. In both cryptic and conspicuous larvae, predation risk increased with prey size, but the increase tended to be steeper in the conspicuous group. No main effect of colour type was found. All the quantitative relationships were reasonably consistent across replicates. 5. Our results suggest that the size dependence of mortality risk in insect prey is primarily determined by the probability of being detected by a predator rather than by a size-dependent warning effect associated with conspicuous colouration. Our results therefore imply that warningly coloured insects do not necessarily benefit more than the cryptic species from large body size, as has been previously suggested. [source]


    Mathematical improvements to maximum likelihood parallel factor analysis: theory and simulations

    Abstract A number of simplified algorithms for carrying out maximum likelihood parallel factor analysis (MLPARAFAC) for three-way data affected by different error structures are described. The MLPARAFAC method was introduced to establish the theoretical basis to treat heteroscedastic and/or correlated noise affecting trilinear data. Unfortunately, the large size of the error covariance matrix employed in the general formulation of this algorithm prevents its application to solve standard three-way problems. The algorithms developed here are based on the principle of alternating least squares, but differ from the generalized MLPARAFAC algorithm in that they do not use equivalent alternatives of the objective function to estimate the loadings for the different modes. Instead, these simplified algorithms tackle the loss of symmetry of the PARAFAC model by using only one representation of the objective function to estimate the loadings of all of the modes. In addition, a compression step is introduced to allow the use of the generalized algorithm. Simulation studies carried out under a variety of measurement error conditions were used for statistical validation of the maximum likelihood properties of the algorithms and to assess the quality of the results and computation time.     Effect of substrate size on immunoinhibition of amylase activity,

    Abstract Immunoinhibition assays are hypothesized to work by antibodies blocking substrate access to enzyme active sites. To test this hypothesis, the inhibition of amylase isoenzymes by monoclonal and polyclonal antisera was assessed using substrates of varying sizes: chromogenic sustrates 3, 5, or 7 glucose units in length, novel synthetic macromolecular substrates, and starch. The synthetic macromolecular substrates consisted of small oligosaccharide substrates linked to an inert polymer that conferred a large size to substrate molecules as determined by gel filtration chromatography. When substrate size increased, amylase activity could be inhibited equivalently by antibody concentrations that are 10‐fold lower. Progressively less polyclonal serum was required to inhibit amylase activity as substrate length increased from 3 to 5 to 7 glucose units and as size was increased by linkage to a polymer. Different effects of substrate size were observed with two monoclonal antibodies. One monoclonal antibody blocked amylase activity independent of substrate size, while another monoclonal antibody had little inhibitory effect except using starch as substrate.     The population of Acacia tree species producing gum arabic in the Karamoja region, Uganda

    Abstract The study aimed at determining the population status of the different Acacia tree species producing gum arabic in the undisturbed, grazed and cultivated habitats in the Karamoja region, Uganda. A total of 135 sample plots each measuring 20 × 20 m2 (0.04 ha) with each habitat having 45 plots were selected and established in the seven counties using a simple random sampling technique. The tree species present, their abundances and sizes were recorded. Twelve Acacia species were identified and a total of 5535 recorded in the sampled area. Out of these, five were gum-producing acacias. Acacia senegal dominated the acacias in all the seven counties and in all habitats of Karamoja with Acacia nilotica (72.3%), Acacia seyal (13.4%), Acacia sieberiana (4%) and Acacia gerrardii (2.6%). Non-gum-producing acacias constituted 7.19% of the total abundance. The tree densities increased with increase in tree size in the undisturbed and grazed habitats but decreased in the cultivated habitat. Most Acacia trees were of large size, an indication of old age and poor regeneration that could affect their future population status. It is recommended that further investigations be carried out into the causes of poor regeneration of Acacia species. Résumé Cette étude visait à déterminer le statut de la population de différentes espèces d'Acacia qui produisent de la gomme arabique dans des habitats non perturbés, pâturés et cultivés de la région de Karamoja, en Ouganda. On a sélectionné un total de 135 plots échantillons mesurant chacun 20 × 20 mètres (0,4 ha), chaque habitat en comptant 45, dans les sept comtés, en utilisant une technique simple d'échantillonnage au hasard. On a rapporté les espèces d'arbres présentes, leur abondance et leur taille. On a identifié douze espèces d'Acacia, pour un total de 5535 dans la zone d'échantillon. Parmi elles, cinq produisent de la gomme. Acacia senegal dominait dans les sept comtés et dans tous les habitats avec Acacia nilotica (72.3%), Acacia seyal (13.4%), Acacia sieberiana (4%) et Acacia gerrardii (2.6%). Les acacias ne produisant pas de gomme représentaient 7.19% de l'abondance totale.
