Lemonsu Abstract A numerical study was conducted on the Rezé suburban catchment (Nantes, France) to evaluate the hydrological component of the town energy balance (TEB) scheme, which simulates in a coupled way the water and energy balances for the urban covers. The catchment is a residential area where hydrological data were continuously collected from 1993 to 1998 by the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC), notably the runoff in the stormwater drainage network. A 6-year simulation with the TEB and interaction soil,biosphere,atmosphere (ISBA) schemes in off-line mode enabled the comparison of modelled and observed runoff. Some weaknesses of the TEB were uncovered and led to improved parameterization of water exchanges: (1) calibration of the maximum capacity of the rainfall interception reservoir on roads and roofs and (2) inclusion of water infiltration through the roads, according to a simple formulation. The calibration of this water flux gives results that are consistent with direct measurements of water infiltration performed on the Rezé site and from the literature. The new parameterization produces better runoff in terms of timing and magnitude, which are comparable to those obtained by the LCPC with other hydrological models. It shows also the impact of the water infiltration through the roads, corresponding to a water transfer from the TEB to ISBA, on the water balance: the water contents of road, roof and soil reservoirs being modified, the evaporation from artificial surfaces decreases, while the evapotranspiration from natural covers increases. Through the evaporative flux, such a modification of the water balance induces large repercussions on the surface energy balance. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Sensitivity analysis of snow patterns in Swiss ski resorts to shifts in temperature, precipitation and humidity under conditions of climate changeINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY, Issue 8 2009Bastienne Uhlmann Abstract The value of snow as a resource has considerably increased in Swiss mountain regions, in particular in the context of winter tourism. In the perspective of a warming climate, it is thus important to quantify the potential changes in snow amount and duration that could have large repercussions on the economy of ski resorts. Because of the fine spatial variability of snow, the use of a Surface Energy Balance Model (SEBM) is adequate to simulate local snow cover evolution. A perturbation method has been developed to generate plausible future meteorological input data required for SEBM simulations in order to assess the changes in snow cover patterns. Current and future snow depths have also been simulated within the ski areas themselves. The results show a large decrease of the snow depths and duration, even at high elevation in a warmer climate and emphasize the sensitivity of snow to topographical characteristics of the resorts. The most vulnerable areas would be the Western regions of Switzerland or the Eastern Prealps whereas the Central Alps or Valais would be less affected. The study highlights the fact that not only the altitude of a domain but also its exposure, localization inland and slope gradients need to be taken into account when evaluating current and future snow depths. However, much progress seems to be achievable when data on vocalisations is included. In a recent paper, Summers et al. (2007) argued that strong assortative mating indicated that parrot crossbill Loxia pytyopsittacus, Scottish crossbill Loxia scotica and common crossbill Loxia curvirostra behave as good species when breeding in sympatry. Here I argue that their data, when placed in the context of other studies, also indicate that three vocally differentiated European populations within the common crossbill are species (following the biological species concept of Mayr (1963): species are groups of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups). If this tentative conclusion remains to be upheld, it might have large repercussions for our understanding of the speciation process as well as for a number of more applied issues such as the discovery and description of biodiversity and the conversation of mobile, cryptic species. [source] Prescribed fire and conservation of a threatened mountain grassland specialist: a capture,recapture study on the Orsini's viper in the French alpsANIMAL CONSERVATION, Issue 3 2009A. Lyet Abstract Burning has traditionally been used in the southern French Alps to maintain open lands for grazing. In the context of land use abandonment, prescribed burning may be the only realistic practical tool available to oppose encroachment by woody plants in numerous mountainous landscapes. Although only recently developed as a modern tool for wildfire prevention and management of pastoral grasslands, this practice is now becoming widespread, which raises the issue of its impact on the fauna in general, and on endangered species in particular. We studied the impact of a prescribed fire on the survival and small-scale movements of one of the rarest snakes in Europe, the Orsini's viper Vipera ursinii, in order to evaluate its potential threat to population sustainability. We evaluated the body condition of snakes and the quality of their habitat, more precisely the abundance of grasshoppers as the main food resource, and the vegetation cover as shelter. About 3.6 ha of a 8.8 ha study site was burnt in autumn 2003. Snake population parameters were estimated using multi-state capture,mark,recapture methods. We demonstrate that burning reduced the survival of the vipers by more than half during the first year following the fire. Contrary to what was expected, there was no evidence of emigration from the burned to the unburned area immediately after the fire. Despite the decrease in grasshopper density and vegetation cover in the burned area, there was no evidence of mid-term mortality in snakes that could result from an increased predation rate or from the reduced body condition of snakes. As such high mortality, mainly or entirely due to the direct effect of fire, is likely to have large repercussions on population sustainability, we suggest several improvements of prescribed fire protocols to minimize their impact and strongly emphasize the need for a prescribed fire policy that takes into account specific recommendations for threatened species like Orsini's viper. The case of the Orsini's viper is very typical of conservation problems in open mountain lands, and we believe that our research will help determine the most suitable approach for long-term conservation of biodiversity in such semi-natural ecosystems.
