Selected AbstractsIdentification of fruit tree phytoplasmas and their vectors in Bosnia and HerzegovinaEPPO BULLETIN, Issue 2 2007D. Delic Surveys were carried out in autumn 2004 and spring 2005 in the traditional areas dedicated to pome and stone fruit cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina to assess the presence, distribution and incidence of phytoplasma diseases in fruit trees. The occurrence of psyllid vectors was also considered. The detection of phytoplasmas in plant and insect samples and their identification were carried out by symptom observations in the field, double antibody sandwich-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA), nested polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses. Laboratory analyses showed the presence of phytoplasmas belonging to: (i) 16SrX group, subgroup A (,Candidatus Phytoplasma mali') in 23 out of 25 apple samples, in 4 groups out of 18 of Cacopsylla picta (synonym Cacopsylla costalis) and in 2 groups out of 9 of Cacopsylla melanoneura; (ii) 16SrX group, subgroup C (,Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri') in 11 out of 30 pears samples and in 2 groups out of 9 of Cacopsylla pyri; (iii) 16SrX group, subgroup B (,Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum') in 4 apricots, 2 peaches out of 42 stone fruit samples and in 1 group out of 14 of Cacopsylla pruni. The presence of different subtypes of Candidatus Phytoplasma mali, both in apple trees and in insects, was proven. [source] Radon (222Rn) in Ground Water of Fractured Rocks: A Diffusion/Ion Exchange ModelGROUND WATER, Issue 4 2004Warren W. Wood Ground waters from fractured igneous and high-grade sialic metamorphic rocks frequently have elevated activity of dissolved radon (222Rn). A chemically based model is proposed whereby radium (226Ra) from the decay of uranium (238U) diffuses through the primary porosity of the rock to the water-transmitting fracture where it is sorbed on weathering products. Sorption of 226Ra on the fracture surface maintains an activity gradient in the rock matrix, ensuring a continuous supply of 226Ra to fracture surfaces. As a result of the relatively long half-life of 226Ra (1601 years), significant activity can accumulate on fracture surfaces. The proximity of this sorbed 226Ra to the active ground water flow system allows its decay progeny 222Rn to enter directly into the water. Laboratory analyses of primary porosity and diffusion coefficients of the rock matrix, radon emanation, and ion exchange at fracture surfaces are consistent with the requirements of a diffusion/ion-exchange model. A dipole-brine injection/withdrawal experiment conducted between bedrock boreholes in the high-grade metamorphic and granite rocks at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States (42°56,N, 71°43,W) shows a large activity of 226Ra exchanged from fracture surfaces by a magnesium brine. The 226Ra activity removed by the exchange process is 34 times greater than that of 238U activity. These observations are consistent with the diffusion/ion-exchange model. Elutriate isotopic ratios of 223Ra/226Ra and 238U/226Ra are also consistent with the proposed chemically based diffusion/ion-exchange model. This process involves a number of genetic, constitutional, hormonal, nutritional, and environmental factors, in addition to the influence of frequently repeated facial movements during laughing, smoking, etc. This article reviews the physiological basis and mechanism of action of the active cosmetic ingredient acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline®). We prepared two formulations: an emulsion with an external aqueous phase for normal to dry skin, and a gel for oily skin. Laboratory analyses, rheology tests and in vitro release assays were used to evaluate the stability of these formulations for cosmetic treatment. The association between the Leu72Met polymorphism of the preproghrelin gene and diabetic complications was examined in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects and methods. A total of 258 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 522 control subjects were screened. Genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction technique. The diagnosis of coronary heart disease was based on clinical and ECG criteria. Laboratory analyses were carried out in the hospital laboratory. Results. No differences in the genotype distributions and allele frequencies of the preproghrelin Leu72Met polymorphism were found between type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and controls. The polymorphism was not associated with macro- or micro-angiopathy or hypertension. However, Leu72Met polymorphism was associated with serum creatinine (P = 0.006) and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels (P = 0.006) with Leu72Leu subjects showing the highest values. This association was observed only amongst diabetic group. Conclusions. The Leu72Met polymorphism of the preproghrelin gene was not related to cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Leu72Met polymorphism was, however, associated with serum creatinine and Lp(a) levels in diabetic patients. The mechanism might be associated with a possible change in ghrelin product and its somatotropic effect. [source] GEOCHEMICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL ANOMALIES AT THE ZDANICE OIL- AND GASFIELD, SE CZECH REPUBLICJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2008M. Matolin Oil at the Zdanice field in the SE Czech Republic is reservoired at a depth of 900 m in weathered Precambrian granitoids and Lower Miocene sandstones and conglomerates. Tertiary claystones, siltstones and sandstones form the top seal. Surface gamma-ray spectrometry carried out along two profiles across the field (6,880 m and 8,335 m in length, respectively) found perceptible decreases of K, U, and Th concentrations relative to background values. This can be explained in terms of enhanced leaching of these radionuclides by groundwater acids derived from hydrocarbons. Observed increases in radon and thoron in soil gas above the oil-producing zone at Zdanice may be caused by enhanced gas emanation from U- and Th-bearing minerals decomposed by groundwater acids. Laboratory analyses of 444 samples collected from 18 shallow boreholes (20 m deep) pointed to a trend of decreasing K, U and Th concentrations above the oil-producing zone at Zdanice. Decreases in rock porosity and organic carbon content were also noted together with an increase in mineralogical density, magnetic susceptibility and sulphur content. Petrophysical analyses of 330 samples from deep boreholes showed lower values of K and U in samples from oil-producing wells. These observations of minor petrophysical alterations in rocks overlying the Zdanice oilfield may be characteristic and may be applicable to hydrocarbon exploration operations elsewhere. [source] Mineralogical Characteristics and Cationic Exchange Properties of a Zeolite Mineral from Romana, NW Sardinia, ItalyRESOURCE GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2009Maria L. Fercia Abstract An investigation was conducted into the Tertiary ignimbrite formations in the Romana area in NW Sardinia. Scanning electron microscopy,energy-dispersive spectrometry indicated the presence of clinoptilolite and subordinate smectite, quartz, mordenite and calcite. Laboratory analyses of representative samples collected from the deposit indicated a cation exchange capacity ranging from 85 to 135 mEq per 100 g. Ion exchange experiments conducted in flasks containing different initial cation concentrations and in columns supplied with solution having constant cation concentration, showed different selectivity towards the cations examined, in the order: NH4+> Pb2+> Cd2+> Cu2+> Zn2+> Mn2+> Ni2+. Compared to the untreated material, under the experimental conditions used and considering the eluate, and the Italian regulatory limits for discharge into surface waters, the zeolite treated with a 1-N NaCl solution yielded a 1.3,5-fold increase in the volume of treated water, depending on the cation examined. The experimental results obtained show that the cationic exchange properties of the zeolite rock from the Romana deposit are comparable with the average quality of zeolites currently imported into Italy from non-European countries. [source] Invasive and Noninvasive Correlations of B-Type Natriuretic Peptide in Patients With Heart Failure Due to Chagas CardiomyopathyCONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE, Issue 3 2008Fábio Vilas-Boas MD Heart failure due to Chagas cardiomyopathy (HFCC) differs from failure with other etiologies because of the occurrence of intense inflammatory infiltrate and right ventricle compromise. This article investigates correlations of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels with parameters of severity in HFCC. Twenty-eight patients and 8 normal controls underwent heart catheterization and clinical and laboratory analyses. BNP levels were higher in patients with HFCC (P<.0001) and correlated with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class; right atrial pressure; wedge pressure; cardiac output; levels of serum sodium, hemoglobin, urea, and tumor necrosis factor-,; and ejection fraction. Interferon-, and transforming growth factor-, did not correlate with BNP level. The authors conclude that BNP levels are elevated in patients experiencing HFCC, irrespective of NYHA class, and that the occurrence of HFCC correlates with severity of disease. [source] Multivariate calibration of hyperspectral ,-ray energy spectra for proximal soil sensingEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2007R. A. Viscarra Rossel Summary The development of proximal soil sensors to collect fine-scale soil information for environmental monitoring, modelling and precision agriculture is vital. Conventional soil sampling and laboratory analyses are time-consuming and expensive. In this paper we look at the possibility of calibrating hyperspectral ,-ray energy spectra to predict various surface and subsurface soil properties. The spectra were collected with a proximal, on-the-go ,-ray spectrometer. We surveyed two geographically and physiographically different fields in New South Wales, Australia, and collected hyperspectral ,-ray data consisting of 256 energy bands at more than 20 000 sites in each field. Bootstrap aggregation with partial least squares regression (or bagging-PLSR) was used to calibrate the ,-ray spectra of each field for predictions of selected soil properties. However, significant amounts of pre-processing were necessary to expose the correlations between the ,-ray spectra and the soil data. We first filtered the spectra spatially using local kriging, then further de-noised, normalized and detrended them. The resulting bagging-PLSR models of each field were tested using leave-one-out cross-validation. Bagging-PLSR provided robust predictions of clay, coarse sand and Fe contents in the 0,15 cm soil layer and pH and coarse sand contents in the 15,50 cm soil layer. Furthermore, bagging-PLSR provided us with a measure of the uncertainty of predictions. This study is apparently the first to use a multivariate calibration technique with on-the-go proximal ,-ray spectrometry. Proximally sensed ,-ray spectrometry proved to be a useful tool for predicting soil properties in different soil landscapes. [source] 3D imaging of a reservoir analogue in point bar deposits in the Ferron Sandstone, Utah, using ground-penetrating radarGEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING, Issue 3 2004Xiaoxian Zeng ABSTRACT Most existing reservoir models are based on 2D outcrop studies; 3D aspects are inferred from correlation between wells, and so are inadequately constrained for reservoir simulations. To overcome these deficiencies, we have initiated a multidimensional characterization of reservoir analogues in the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone in Utah. Detailed sedimentary facies maps of cliff faces define the geometry and distribution of reservoir flow units, barriers and baffles at the outcrop. High-resolution 2D and 3D ground-penetrating radar (GPR) images extend these reservoir characteristics into 3D to allow the development of realistic 3D reservoir models. Models use geometric information from mapping and the GPR data, combined with petrophysical data from surface and cliff-face outcrops, and laboratory analyses of outcrop and core samples. The site of the field work is Corbula Gulch, on the western flank of the San Rafael Swell, in east-central Utah. The outcrop consists of an 8,17 m thick sandstone body which contains various sedimentary structures, such as cross-bedding, inclined stratification and erosional surfaces, which range in scale from less than a metre to hundreds of metres. 3D depth migration of the common-offset GPR data produces data volumes within which the inclined surfaces and erosional surfaces are visible. Correlation between fluid permeability, clay content, instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude of the GPR data provides estimates of the 3D distribution of fluid permeability and clay content. [source] Estimation of nitrogen concentration and in vitro dry matter digestibility of herbage of warm-season grass pastures from canopy hyperspectral reflectance measurementsGRASS & FORAGE SCIENCE, Issue 2 2008P. J. Starks Abstract Remote sensing of nitrogen (N) concentration and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) in herbage can help livestock managers make timely decisions for adjusting stocking rate and managing pastures during the grazing season. Traditional laboratory analyses of N and IVDMD are time-consuming and costly. Non-destructive measurements of canopy hyperspectral reflectance of pasture may provide a rapid and inexpensive means of estimating these measures of nutritive value. Using a portable spectroradiometer, canopy reflectance was measured in eight warm-season grass pastures in the USA in June and July in 2002 and 2003 to develop and validate algorithms for estimating N concentration and IVDMD of herbage. Nitrogen concentration of herbage was linearly correlated (r = 0·82; P < 0·001) with a ratio of reflectance in the 705- and 1685-nm wavebands (R705/R1685) and IVDMD was correlated with R705/R535 (r = 0·74; P < 0·001). Compared with simple linear regressions of N concentration and IVDMD in herbage with two-waveband reflectance ratios, multiple regression, using maximum r2 improvement, band-depth analysis with step-wise regression, and partial least-squares regression enhanced the correlation between N concentration and IVDMD of herbage and canopy reflectance values (0·81 , |r| , 0·90; P < 0·001). Validation of the prediction equations indicated that multiple regression only slightly improved accuracy of a model for predicting N concentration and IVDMD of herbage compared with simple linear regression of reflectance ratios. Results suggest that the N concentration and IVDMD of herbage of warm-season grass pastures can be rapidly and non-destructively estimated during the grazing season using canopy reflectance in a few narrow wavebands. [source] Efficacy and safety of thalidomide in children and young adults with intractable inflammatory bowel disease: long-term resultsALIMENTARY PHARMACOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS, Issue 4 2007M. LAZZERINI Summary Background Anti-tumour necrosis factor- , antibodies are useful for the treatment of refractory Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Thalidomide is another agent with tumour necrosis factor- , suppressive properties. Aim To investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of thalidomide in a group of children and young adults with refractory inflammatory bowel disease. Methods Twenty-eight patients with refractory moderate-severe inflammatory bowel disease (19 Crohn's disease, 9 ulcerative colitis) received thalidomide 1.5,2.5 mg/kg/day. Patients were assessed at baseline, at weeks 2, 4, 8 and 12, and then every 12 weeks by patient's diary, physical examinations, laboratory analyses and scoring on activity indexes. Primary outcomes were: (i) efficacy in inducing remission; and (ii) efficacy in maintaining remission. Results Remission was achieved with thalidomide in 21 of 28 (75%) patients (17 with Crohn's disease, 4 with ulcerative colitis). Mean duration of remission was 34.5 months. Sixteen of 20 (80%) patients suspended steroids. Reversible neuropathy occurred in seven of 28 (25%) patients, but only with cumulative doses over 28 g. Other side effects requiring thalidomide suspension were vertigo/somnolence (one of 28), and agitation/hallucinations (one of 28). Conclusions Thalidomide seems to be effective in inducing long-term remission in children and adolescents with intractable inflammatory bowel disease. Neuropathy is the main adverse effect, but appears to be cumulative dose-dependent, thus allowing long-term remission before drug suspension. [source] Simultaneous Data Reconciliation and Parameter Estimation in Bulk Polypropylene Polymerizations in Real TimeMACROMOLECULAR SYMPOSIA, Issue 1 2006Diego Martinez Prata Abstract This work presents the implementation of a methodology for dynamic data reconciliation and simultaneous estimation of quality and productivity parameters in real time, using data from an industrial bulk Ziegler-Natta propylene polymerization process. A phenomenological model of the real process, based on mass and energy balances, was developed and implemented for interpretation of actual plant data. The resulting nonlinear dynamic optimization problem was solved using a sequential approach on a time window specifically tuned for the studied process. Despite the essentially isothermal operation conditions, obtained results show that inclusion of energy balance constraints allows for increase of information redundancy and, as a consequence, for computation of better parameter estimates than the ones obtained when the energy balance constraints are not considered (Prata et al., 2005). Examples indicate that the proposed technique can be used very effectively for monitoring of polymer quality and identification of process malfunctions in real time even when laboratory analyses are scarce. [source] Detection of cometary amines in samples returned by StardustMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 1-2 2008Daniel P. Glavin A suite of amino acids and amines including glycine, L-alanine, ,-alanine (BALA), ,-amino- n -butyric acid (GABA), ,-amino- n -caproic acid (EACA), ethanolamine (MEA), methylamine (MA), and ethylamine (EA) were identified in acid-hydrolyzed, hot-water extracts of these Stardust materials above background levels. With the exception of MA and EA, all other primary amines detected in comet-exposed aerogel fragments C2054,4 and C2086,1 were also present in the flight aerogel witness tile that was not exposed to the comet, indicating that most amines are terrestrial in origin. The enhanced relative abundances of MA and EA in comet-exposed aerogel compared to controls, coupled with MA to EA ratios (C2054,4: 1.0 ± 0.2; C2086,1: 1.8 ± 0.2) that are distinct from preflight aerogels (E243,13C and E243,13F: 7 ± 3), suggest that these volatile amines were captured from comet Wild 2. MA and EA were present predominantly in an acid-hydrolyzable bound form in the aerogel, rather than as free primary amines, which is consistent with laboratory analyses of cometary ice analog materials. It is possible that Wild 2 MA and EA were formed on energetically processed icy grains containing ammonia and approximately equal abundances of methane and ethane. The presence of cometary amines in Stardust material supports the hypothesis that comets were an important source of prebiotic organic carbon and nitrogen on the early Earth. [source] In situ identification, pairing, and classification of meteorites from Antarctica through magnetic susceptibility measurementsMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 3 2006Luigi Folco Magnetic susceptibility measurements carried out with a pocket meter (SM30) during the 2003/04 PNRA meteorite collection expedition to northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) proved to be a rapid, sensitive, non-destructive means for the in situ identification, pairing, and classification of meteorites. In blue ice fields characterized by the presence of moraines and glacial drifts (e.g., Miller Butte, Roberts Butte, and Frontier Mountain), magnetic susceptibility measurements allowed discrimination of meteorites from abundant terrestrial stones that look like meteorites thanks to the relatively high magnetic susceptibility of the former with respect to terrestrial rocks. Comparative measurements helped identify 16 paired fragments found at Johannessen Nunataks, thereby reducing unnecessary duplication of laboratory analyses and statistical bias. Following classifications schemes developed by us in this and previous works, magnetic susceptibility measurements also helped classify stony meteorites directly in the field, thereby providing a means for selecting samples with higher research priority. A magnetic gradiometer capable of detecting perturbations in the Earth's magnetic field induced by the presence of meteorites was an efficient tool for locating meteorites buried in snow along the downwind margin of the Frontier Mountain blue ice field. Based on these results, we believe that magnetic sensors should constitute an additional payload for robotic search for meteorites on the Antarctic ice sheet and, by extension, on the surface of Mars where meteorite accumulations are predicted by theoretical works. Lastly, magnetic susceptibility data was successfully used to crosscheck the later petrographic classification of the 123 recovered meteorites, allowing the detection of misclassified or peculiar specimens. [source] Optical characterization of concentrated dispersions: applications to laboratory analyses and on-line process monitoring and control,POLYMER INTERNATIONAL, Issue 9 2004H Buron Abstract Light scattering methods are often used to study the stability of suspensions or emulsions and to estimate the dispersed phase properties such as particle size and volume fraction. However, such optical methods often require a previous dilution of the dispersion because of a limited measurement range, and are then unable to give information about the real physical state of dense heterogeneous media. A new technology based on multiple light scattering analysis and called Turbiscan has been recently developed by a French company, Formulaction, to fill this gap and to characterize both diluted and concentrated dispersions. In the first part, we review the physical concepts of multiple light scattering by dispersions. In relation to the optical analyser Turbiscan, we present physical and statistical models for the radiative transfer in dense suspensions. In the second part, we investigate the influence of particle volume fraction and particle size (polystyrene latex bead suspensions) on the backscattered and transmitted light fluxes measured by Turbiscan. The experimental data are compared with results from the physical models. In the last section, we use the optical analyser Turbiscan Lab to detect and characterize various concentrated dispersions destabilization (coalescence, flocculation, creaming and sedimentation), and then the Turbiscan On Line to monitor and characterize an emulsification process under ultrasonic agitation. Pohlmann-Eden The antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) induces subclinical changes in both the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation system. However, fatal bleeding is very rare. This study reports a 39-year-old patient who underwent selective amygdalohippocampectomy because of drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy. Preoperatively, the patient was on a combined therapy with VPA and topiramate, and routine coagulation laboratory parameters were entirely normal. Epilepsy surgery was immediately followed by severe intracranial bleeding events which promped repeated craniectomy. Extensive laboratory analyses revealed a factor XIII activity level of 17%, indicating factor XIII deficiency confirmed by a reduced XIIIA-antigen. After termination of treatment with VPA, factor XIII levels returned to normal. Control examinations after 9 and 24 months showed normal range values for all coagulation parameters, including factor XIII, platelet function, and von Willebrand factor. To our knowledge, this case is the first description of a well-documented, clinically relevant transient factor XIII-deficiency syndrome related to VPA treatment. [source] Interferon beta-1b treatment in patients with relapsing,remitting multiple sclerosis under a standardized protocol in SpainACTA NEUROLOGICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 4 2000T. Arbizu Objective, A protocol system is being used in Spain for the prescription of innovative drugs including interferon beta-1b (IFN,-1b). Petitions for dispensing and reimbursement are based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of pivotal trials, and are reviewed individually for approval by specialist committees. To estimate the performance of IFN,-1b in the clinical setting, data collected by the INSALUD and regional health services of Andalusia and Catalonia, together responsible for the healthcare of nearly 30 million individuals, were compiled in a common database for analysis. Methods, Data comprise demographic and disease characteristics at the time of petition and at follow-up 3 months after treatment initiation and every 6 months thereafter. Efficacy was estimated by mean number of relapses per year, proportion of relapse-free patients, and disease progression as measured by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Safety parameters included adverse events and laboratory analyses. Results, Between September 1995 and database cutoff in mid-1998, petitions of 1419 patients were approved for IFN,-1b treatment. Patients were homogenous across the three databases and in the subgroups of patients completing 1 year (n=940) and 2 years (n=302) of treatment. There was a marked decrease in the mean number of relapses in the first 12 months of IFN,-1b treatment for the 938 patients documented for 12 months, with a mean of 0.4 (±0.7 SD) relapses per patient and year, and a 2-year mean of 0.9 (±1.20 SD) in the 302 patients documented for 24 months. Of the 938 patients followed for ,12 months, 505 (53.8%) were documented as being relapse-free during 12 months of treatment, and 146 (48.3%) of the 302 patients followed for ,24 months, were relapse-free during 24 months of treatment. There were no differences in mean or median EDSS scores between baseline and months 12 and 24. Skin disorders were the most frequent adverse events, reported in over one-third of all patients; there were 159 injection site events, most frequently erythema (115 events). Systemic AEs pointing towards flu-like symptoms were reported in 288 of 1419 patients (20.3%). Leukopenia was the most frequently reported laboratory event. Elevations in liver transaminases were noted for 12 patients (0.8%) with SGOT increase and 7 (0.5%) with SGPT increase. Conclusion, The protocol system has helped make IFN, treatment available to 8,10% of the estimated 15,000,18,000 MS patients in the regions studied. In terms of efficacy, IFN,-1b performed in line with the pivotal study results. The safety profile of IFN,-1b was consistent with the published findings and the drug labelling, and no new side effects or increased incidence of known side effects was observed. Dankers During the production of carbon black monitoring of primary particle size plays an important role since this parameter determines product properties and is specified accordingly. For process control fast information about this size is absolutely necessary. In the work presented here it was investigated whether time-resolved laser-induced incandescence is suitable for on-line measurement of primary particle sizes of carbon black during the production process. The results obtained experimentally in industrial production and test reactors were compared with values for the specific surface area from laboratory analyses of sampled material. [source] Reducing blood transfusion requirements in preterm infants by a new device: a pilot studyACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 2 2009Ami Ballin Abstract Objective: To test a new device designed to salvage red blood cells (RBCs) from blood samples drawn from preterm infants, with the intent of decreasing blood loss and lowering the requirements for RBC transfusions. Design: A case-controlled pilot study was conducted in two Israeli neonatal intensive care units in large municipal hospitals. Twenty low-birthweight preterm infants were randomly and equally divided into the ErythroSaveÔ group or a control group. All blood tests in the study group (except for complete blood count and coagulation parameters) were obtained during the first week of life by the new device in the study group and by ordinary syringes in the control group. The main outcome measure was the total number of units of blood needed. Results: The average volume of blood obtained for laboratory analyses from each infant was 27 mL in the ErythroSave group and 24 mL in controls (not significant). The average volume of transfused packed cells was 6.4 mL for the ErythroSave group and 21.3 mL for the controls (p = 0.008). Conclusion: The use of ErythroSave for sampling blood significantly reduced blood transfusion requirements in premature infants compared to sampling by conventional syringes. [source] Geochemical mapping of carbonate sediments in the Makgadikgadi basin, Botswana using moderate resolution remote sensing dataEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 6 2006Kevin White Abstract This paper maps the carbonate geochemistry of the Makgadikgadi Pans region of northern Botswana from moderate resolution (500 m pixels) remotely sensed data, to assess the impact of various geomorphological processes on surficial carbonate distribution. Previous palaeo-environmental studies have demonstrated that the pans have experienced several highstands during the Quaternary, forming calcretes around shoreline embayments. The pans are also a significant regional source of dust, and some workers have suggested that surficial carbonate distributions may be controlled, in part, by wind regime. Field studies of carbonate deposits in the region have also highlighted the importance of fluvial and groundwater processes in calcrete formation. However, due to the large area involved and problems of accessibility, the carbonate distribution across the entire Makgadikgadi basin remains poorly understood. The MODIS instrument permits mapping of carbonate distribution over large areas; comparison with estimates from Landsat Thematic Mapper data show reasonable agreement, and there is good agreement with estimates from laboratory analysis of field samples. The results suggest that palaeo-lake highstands, reconstructed here using the SRTM 3 arc-second digital elevation model, have left behind surficial carbonate deposits, which can be mapped by the MODIS instrument. [source] Using spatial models and kriging techniques to optimize long-term ground-water monitoring networks: a case studyENVIRONMETRICS, Issue 5-6 2002Kirk Cameron Abstract In a pilot project, a spatial and temporal algorithm (geostatistical temporal,spatial or GTS) was developed for optimizing long-term monitoring (LTM) networks. Data from two monitored ground-water plumes were used to test the algorithm. The primary objective was to determine the degree to which sampling, laboratory analysis, and/or well construction resources could be pared without losing key statistical information concerning the plumes. Optimization of an LTM network requires an accurate assessment of both ground-water quality over time and trends or other changes in individual monitoring wells. Changes in interpolated concentration maps over time indicate whether ground-water quality has improved or declined. GTS separately identifies temporal and spatial redundancies. Temporal redundancy may be reduced by lengthening the time between sample collection. Spatial redundancy may be reduced by removing wells from the network which do not significantly impact assessment of ground-water quality. Part of the temporal algorithm in GTS involves computation of a composite temporal variogram to determine the least redundant overall sampling interval. Under this measure of autocorrelation between sampling events, the lag time at which the variogram reaches a sill is the sampling interval at which same-well measurements lack correlation and are therefore non-redundant. The spatial algorithm assumes that well locations are redundant if nearby wells offer nearly the same statistical information about the underlying plume. A well was considered redundant if its removal did not significantly change: (i) an interpolated map of the plume; (ii) the local kriging variances in that section of the plume; and (iii) the average global kriging variance. To identify well redundancy, local kriging weights were accumulated into global weights and used to gauge each well's relative contribution to the interpolated plume map. By temporarily removing that subset of wells with the lowest global kriging weights and re-mapping the plume, it was possible to determine how many wells could be removed without losing critical information. Test results from the Massachusetts Military Reserve (MMR) indicated that substantial savings in sampling, analysis and operational costs could be realized by utilizing GTS. [source] Organisation of proficiency testing for plant health diagnostic tests: the experience of FAPAS®EPPO BULLETIN, Issue 1 2010A. Reynolds Proficiency testing (PT) is an established quality assurance measure and is based on the comparison of laboratories' results in an inter-laboratory trial. It highlights problems in laboratory analysis and is an educational tool to help improve data quality. This article describes how PT is organised by FAPAS®. FAPAS® is an international PT provider (external quality assessments) for food chemistry, food microbiology, genetically modified material and water/environmental samples. Since 2007, FAPAS® have organized plant health proficiency tests in conjunction with the Plant Pest and Disease Identification Programme at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera). Up until 2009, FAPAS® has organised seven plant health proficiency tests that covered the identification of lyophilised bacteria, viruses in leaves and fungi in agar plugs. In 2009, FAPAS® organized over 10 plant health proficiency tests under the banner of ,PhytoPAS', including Potato spindle tuber viroid, Phytophthora ramorum, Thrips palmi, Erwinia amylovora, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, etc. DNA extracts, cyst nematodes (Globodera pallida) and slides/immunofluorescence (IF) slides have been added to the programme. The organization of the plant health proficiency tests follows a similar pattern. Suitable test materials are prepared and tested for quality before distribution to requesting participants. Laboratories usually have 1,2 months to analyze their samples and return their results. A report is then compiled for issue to laboratories and these contain all results in an anonymous form, so that laboratories can compare their results with those of other participants. If a laboratory's performance is unsatisfactory then it is up to them to investigate the situation. Thus, the primary purpose of PT is the detection of inaccuracy in a laboratory's results, so that they can investigate the problems and initiate corrective procedures. [source] Scaling analysis of water retention curves for unsaturated sandy loam soils by using fractal geometryEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2010C. Fallico Fractal geometry was deployed to analyse water retention curves (WRC). The three models used to estimate the curves were the general pore-solid fractal (PSF) model and two specific cases of the PSF model: the Tyler & Wheatcraft (TW) and the Rieu & Sposito (RS) models. The study was conducted on 30 undisturbed, sandy loam soil samples taken from a field and subjected to laboratory analysis. The fractal dimension, a non-variable scale factor characterizing each water retention model proposed, was estimated by direct scaling. The method for determining the fractal dimension proposed here entails limiting the analysis to the interval between an upper and lower pressure head cut-off on a log-log plot, and defining the dimension itself as the straight regression line that interpolates the points in the interval with the largest coefficient of determination, R2. The scale relative to the cut-off interval used to determine the fractal behaviour in each model used is presented. Furthermore, a second range of pressure head values was analysed to approximate the fractal dimension of the pore surface. The PSF model exhibited greater spatial variation than the TW or RS models for the parameter values typical of a sandy loam soil. An indication of the variability of the fractal dimension across the entire area studied is also provided. [source] Eolian processes, ground cover, and the archaeology of coastal dunes: A taphonomic case study from San Miguel Island, California, U.S.A.GEOARCHAEOLOGY: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL, Issue 8 2002Torben C. Rick Geomorphological evidence and historical wind records indicate that eolian processes have heavily influenced San Miguel Island environments for much of the Late Quaternary. The island is almost constantly bombarded by prevailing northwesterly winds, with peak velocities exceeding 75 km/h and wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h. These strong winds played an important role in the location, formation, and preservation of the island's more than 600 archaeological sites. Excavation and surface collection at a stratified Middle and Late Holocene archaeological site on the island's north coast suggest that wind related disturbances result in significant displacement of light fish bones, produce concentrations of shellfish and heavy mammal bones, and cause significant abrasion, etching, and polishing of bones, shells, and artifacts. These data illustrate that wind not only alters surface materials but can significantly disturb subsurface deposits to a depth of at least 20 cm. Working in concert with a variety of taphonomic processes, wind can play a fundamental role in the preservation of archaeological sites and careful scrutiny during excavation and laboratory analysis is required to delineate its effects. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Etienne Abstract Mapping and laboratory analysis of the sediment,landform associations in the proglacial area of polythermal Storglaciären, Tarfala, northern Sweden, reveal six distinct lithofacies. Sandy gravel, silty gravel, massive sand and silty sand are interpreted as glaciofluvial in origin. A variable, pervasively deformed to massive clast-rich sandy diamicton is interpreted as the product of an actively deforming subglacial till layer. Massive block gravels, comprising two distinctive moraine ridges, reflect supraglacial sedimentation and ice-marginal and subglacial reworking of heterogeneous proglacial sediments during the Little Ice Age and an earlier more extensive advance. Visual estimation of the relative abundance of these lithofacies suggests that the sandy gravel lithofacies is of the most volumetric importance, followed by the diamicton and block gravels. Sedimentological analysis suggests that the role of a deforming basal till layer has been the dominant factor controlling glacier flow throughout the Little Ice Age, punctuated by shorter (warmer and wetter climatic) periods where high water pressures may have played a more important role. These results contribute to the database that facilitates discrimination of past glacier thermal regimes and dynamics in areas that are no longer glacierized, as well as older glaciations in the geological record. [source] A Case Study of Soil-Gas Sampling in Silt and Clay-Rich (Low-Permeability) SoilsGROUND WATER MONITORING & REMEDIATION, Issue 1 2009Todd A. McAlary Soil-gas sampling and analysis is a common tool used in vapor intrusion assessments; however, sample collection becomes more difficult in fine-grained, low-permeability soils because of limitations on the flow rate that can be sustained during purging and sampling. This affects the time required to extract sufficient volume to satisfy purging and sampling requirements. The soil-gas probe tubing or pipe and sandpack around the probe screen should generally be purged prior to sampling. After purging, additional soil gas must be extracted for chemical analysis, which may include field screening, laboratory analysis, occasional duplicate samples, or analysis for more than one analytical method (e.g., volatile organic compounds and semivolatile organic compounds). At present, most regulatory guidance documents do not distinguish between soil-gas sampling methods that are appropriate for high- or low-permeability soils. This paper discusses permeability influences on soil-gas sample collection and reports data from a case study involving soil-gas sampling from silt and clay-rich soils with moderate to extremely low gas permeability to identify a sampling approach that yields reproducible samples with data quality appropriate for vapor intrusion investigations for a wide range of gas-permeability conditions. [source] Chernozem,Soil of the Year 2005JOURNAL OF PLANT NUTRITION AND SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 6 2005Manfred Altermann Abstract The proclamation of the "Soil of the Year" was made for the first time in Germany in 2005 on occasion of the World Soil Day. Chernozems were selected for this purpose. In this paper an overview of these groups of soils is given. Chernozems are concentrated in the drought region of Central Germany. A standard profile from the core area of Chernozems developed from loess is presented with comprehensive laboratory analysis. Chernozems developed primarily upon carbonatic loess substrates under summer-dry climatic conditions in an open park-like landscape with isolated forest stands. The development of Chernozems began as early as the late glacial period, and they were fully developed by the Atlantikum age. The far-reaching, uniformly thick humus horizons indicate substrate differences in the loess cover, which are partly the result of bioturbation. Within Germany, Chernozems and Chernozem-like soils make up approx. 3% of the surface area and 5% (approx. 11,000 km2) of the arable land. The results of the Static Fertilization Experiment in Bad Lauchstädt, founded in 1902, clarify the high value of Chernozem for biomass production and the environment. Each loss due to erosion or decrease in surface area reduces the fulfillment of soil ecological functions of the soils and is comparable to a loss of animal and plant species. Therefore, soil scientists and the results of soil research must be more comprehensively implemented for soil preservation, protection, and politics. For acceptance of these goals among the general public and the political-decision makers, the campaign "Soil of the Year" should give some thought-provoking impulses. Schwarzerde , Boden des Jahres 2005 Anlässlich des Weltbodentages wurde in Deutschland für 2005 mit der Schwarzerde erstmalig ein ,Boden des Jahres" proklamiert. Damit soll in der Bevölkerung und bei politischen Entscheidungsträgern ein stärkeres Bewusstsein für den Boden und ein höheres Engagement für den Bodenschutz angeregt werden. Im Beitrag wird ein Überblick über diese Bodengruppe gegeben und ein Standardprofil aus dem Kerngebiet der Schwarzerden aus Löss (Mitteldeutsches Trockengebiet) mit umfassenden Laboranalysen exemplarisch präsentiert. Schwarzerden entwickelten sich vorwiegend auf kalkreichen Lössen unter sommertrockenen Klimabedingungen in einer offenen parkähnlichen Landschaft mit Waldinseln. Die Entstehung der Schwarzerden setzte bereits im Spätglazial ein, und im Atlantikum waren sie voll entwickelt. Die weiträumig gleiche Mächtigkeit der Humushorizonte zeichnet primäre Substratunterschiede in der Lössdecke nach; sie sind nicht nur das Ergebnis einer Bioturbation. [source] Soil- and plant-based nitrogen-fertilizer recommendations in arable farmingJOURNAL OF PLANT NUTRITION AND SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2005Hans-Werner Olfs Abstract Under- as well as overfertilization with nitrogen (N) will result in economic loss for the farmer due to reduced yields and quality of the products. Also from an ecological perspective, it is important that the grower makes the correct decision on how much and when to apply N for a certain crop to minimize impacts on the environment. To aggravate the situation, N is a substance that is present in many compartments in different forms (nitrate, ammonium, organic N, etc.) in the soil-plant environment and takes part in various processes (e.g., mineralization, immobilization, leaching, denitrification, etc.). Today, many N-recommendation systems are mainly based on yield expectation. However, yields are not stable from year to year for a given field. Also the processes that determine the N supply from other sources than fertilizer are not predictable at the start of the growing season. Different methodological approaches are reviewed that have been introduced to improve N-fertilizer recommendations for arable crops. Many soil-based methods have been developed to measure soil mineral N (SMN) that is available for plants at a given sampling date. Soil sampling at the start of the growing period and analyzing for the amount of NO -N (and NH -N) is a widespread approach in Europe and North America. Based on data from field calibrations, the SMN pool is filled up with fertilizer N to a recommended amount. Depending on pre-crop, use of organic manure, or soil characteristics, the recommendation might be modified (±10,50,kg N ha,1). Another set of soil methods has been established to estimate the amount of N that is mineralized from soil organic matter, plant residues, and/or organic manure. From the huge range of methods proposed so far, simple mild extraction procedures have gained most interest, but introduction into practical recommendation schemes has been rather limited. Plant-analytical procedures cover the whole range from quantitative laboratory analysis to semiquantitative "quick" tests carried out in the field. The main idea is that the plant itself is the best indicator for the N supply from any source within the growth period. In-field methods like the nitrate plant sap/petiole test and chlorophyll measurements with hand-held devices or via remote sensing are regarded as most promising, because with these methods an adequate adjustment of the N-fertilizer application strategy within the season is feasible. Prerequisite is a fertilization strategy that is based on several N applications and not on a one-go approach. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass N in sehr vielen Umweltkompartimenten in verschiedenen Bindungsformen (Nitrat, Ammonium, organisch gebundener N) vorkommt und dass N in verschiedenste Umsetzungsprozesse involviert ist (Mineralisation, Immobilisation, Auswaschung, Denitrifikation). Auch heutzutage orientieren sich viele Systeme, die zur N-Düngebedarfsprognose eingesetzt werden, im Wesentlichen an der Ertragserwartung. Dabei ist jedoch zu bedenken, dass weder der Ertrag als von Jahr zu Jahr stabil angesehen werden kann, noch dass die Prozesse, die das bodenbürtige N-Angebot bestimmen, zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode hinreichend gut vorausgesagt werden können. Daher werden im Folgenden verschiedene methodische Ansätze erläutert, die zur Verbesserung der N-Düngebedarfsprognose für Ackerkulturen geeignet erscheinen. Viele Bodenanalyse-Methoden zielen darauf ab, den mineralischen N-Vorrat des Bodens, der an einem bestimmten Beprobungstermin als pflanzenverfügbarer N vorliegt, zu erfassen. Die Bodenprobeentnahme zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode und die Bestimmung der Menge an Nitrat (und Ammonium) ist ein in Europa und Nord-Amerika weitverbreiteter Ansatz. Anhand der Daten aus Kalibrierversuchen kann dann abgeleitet werden, wie viel Dünger-N zum Auffüllen des N-Vorrats eingesetzt werden soll. Weitere Bodenuntersuchungsmethoden wurden entwickelt, um die Menge des während der Vegetationszeit aus der organischen Bodensubstanz, aus Ernteresten und/oder aus Wirtschaftsdüngern mineralisierten N zu bestimmen. Obwohl aus der Vielzahl der vorgeschlagenen Methoden einfache "milde" Extraktionsverfahren eine gewisse Bedeutung erlangt haben, werden diese in der Praxis bei der Ermittlung des N-Düngebedarfs als zusätzliche Information nur selten berücksichtigt. Verfahren der Pflanzenanalyse umfassen einen weiten Bereich von quantitativen Laboranalysen bis zu halbquantitativen Schnelltests, die direkt auf dem Acker eingesetzt werden können. Die wesentliche Idee beim Einsatz der Pflanzenanalyse ist die Vorstellung, dass die Pflanze an sich der beste Indikator ist, die N-Verfügbarkeit aus den verschiedenen Quellen gewissermaßen kumulativ innerhalb der Wachstumszeit anzuzeigen. ELLEDGE ABSTRACT 1The conservation status of the dingo Canis familiaris dingo is threatened by hybridization with the domestic dog C. familiaris familiaris. A practical method that can estimate the different levels of hybridization in the field is urgently required so that animals below a specific threshold of dingo ancestry (e.g. 1/4 or 1/2 dingoes) can reliably be identified and removed from dingo populations. 2Skull morphology has been traditionally used to assess dingo purity, but this method does not discriminate between the different levels of dingo ancestry in hybrids. Furthermore, measurements can only be reliably taken from the skulls of dead animals. 3Methods based on the analysis of variation in DNA are able to discriminate between the different levels of hybridization, but the validity of this method has been questioned because the materials currently used as a reference for dingoes are from captive animals of unproven genetic purity. The use of pre-European materials would improve the accuracy of this method, but suitable material has not been found in sufficient quantity to develop a reliable reference population. Furthermore, current methods based on DNA are impractical for the field-based discrimination of hybrids because samples require laboratory analysis. 4Coat colour has also been used to estimate the extent of hybridization and is possibly the most practical method to apply in the field. However, this method may not be as powerful as genetic or morphological analyses because some hybrids (e.g. Australian cattle dog × dingo) are similar to dingoes in coat colour and body form. This problem may be alleviated by using additional visual characteristics such as the presence/absence of ticking and white markings. An abnormality of chromosome number is overall the most frequently identified etiology in a patient with HPE. These abnormalities include trisomy 13, trisomy 18, and triploidy, though several others have been reported.
