Selected AbstractsFuture Perspectives on Employee Selection: Key Directions for Future Research and PracticeAPPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 4 2004Neil Anderson Les recherches sur la sélection et l'évaluation sont abordées d'un point de vue tourné vers l'avenir. On recense quatre grand thèmes d'importance majeure dans le développement des futures recherches: la prédiction bimodale, l'adaptation polyvalente, les réactions et décisions pertinentes et les tensions entre la recherche et la pratique dans la sélection professionnelle. Pour chacun de ces thèmes, nous soulevons certains problèmes qui restent à traiter. On discute enfin des conséquences sur la patique et les avancées actuelles dans le domaine de la sélection, traditionnellement l'une des plus actives des disciplines centrales de la psychologie internationales du travail. A future-oriented perspective for selection and assessment research is presented. Four superordinate themes of critical import to the development of future research are identified: (i) bimodal prediction, (ii) multilevel fit, (iii) applicant reactions and decision making, and (iv) tensions between research and practice in employee selection. Under each theme we pose a number of outstanding questions for research. Implications for practice and the ongoing advancement of the sub-field of selection, traditionally one of the most robust core disciplines in international IWO psychology, are discussed. [source] Challenges confronting clinicians in acute careJOURNAL OF NURSING MANAGEMENT, Issue 6 2009VICKI PARKER RN Aim, To engage acute care clinicians in prioritizing professional issues of concern and to help them identify and design change projects. Background, In order to meet and respond to challenges and to ensure safety, efficiency and positive patient and staff outcomes, it is imperative to understand the nature of difficulties faced by health professionals and for clinicians to be included in decision making and change. Method, A three-phase mixed-method design utilizing descriptive and interpretive approaches. Data were collected via survey, focus groups and nominal group workshops. Results, Communication, skill mix and work environments were identified as issues of most concern. Participants were able to identify and prioritize a range of projects to help them better understand and alleviate workplace problems. Conclusion, This study highlights key directions for practice change and confirms previous findings identifying urgent need for research that aims to overcome poor communication and skill shortages. It differs from other studies by providing a platform for participants to design projects leading to solutions and participate in change. Implications for nursing management, Support must be provided for managers in rostering, staffing, and resource procurement and allocation. The results of the present study highlights a need to refocus management styles on staff empowerment, participation and team building. [source] Consumptive emasculation: the ecological and evolutionary consequences of pollen theftBIOLOGICAL REVIEWS, Issue 2 2009Anna L. Hargreaves ABSTRACT Many of the diverse animals that consume floral rewards act as efficient pollinators; however, others ,steal' rewards without ,paying' for them by pollinating. In contrast to the extensive studies of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of nectar theft, pollen theft and its implications remain largely neglected, even though it affects plant reproduction more directly. Here we review existing studies of pollen theft and find that: (1) most pollen thieves pollinate other plant species, suggesting that theft generally arises from a mismatch between the flower and thief that precludes pollen deposition, (2) bees are the most commonly documented pollen thieves, and (3) the floral traits that typically facilitate pollen theft involve either spatial or temporal separation of sex function within flowers (herkogamy and dichogamy, respectively). Given that herkogamy and dichogamy occur commonly and that bees are globally the most important floral visitors, pollen theft is likely a greatly under-appreciated component of floral ecology and influence on floral evolution. We identify the mechanisms by which pollen theft can affect plant fitness, and review the evidence for theft-induced ecological effects, including pollen limitation. We then explore the consequences of pollen theft for the evolution of floral traits and sexual systems, and conclude by identifying key directions for future research. [source] |
