Selected AbstractsIntraoperative cytology of clear cell carcinoma of the ovaryCYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 6 2006D. Vrdoljak-Mozeti Objective:, To describe the cytomorphology of clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the ovary in intraoperative samples of peritoneal fluid, imprint and scraping samples of the tumour tissue. Study design:, Fourteen histologically confirmed cases, stained by standard cytological procedures, were analysed by light microscopy. Results:, In 33.3% of peritoneal fluid samples and 92.9% of imprint and scraping cytological samples, besides variable clear cell cellular morphology, one or both distinct cytological characteristics were observed: eosinophilic, hyaline, extracellular, globular substance with or without formation of a ,raspberry' body and an eosinophilic, intracytoplasmic inclusions. These structures were clearly seen only in samples stained by May-Grünwald,Giemsa. Conclusion:, Using cytological analysis of imprint and scraping samples of ovarian tumours it is possible to make a precise intraoperative cytological diagnosis in most cases of CCC of the ovary. [source] Intraoperative cytology,Role in bone lesionsDIAGNOSTIC CYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 9 2010Khaliqur Rahman M.D. Abstract In spite of becoming an integral part of surgical pathology, very few reports are available regarding the utility of intraoperative cytology (IOC) exclusively for bone lesions. This study was undertaken in a view to fill this lacuna. Sixty bone lesions were evaluated intraoperatively with the help of cytology smears prepared by touch, scrape, or crush technique. The diagnosis made on cytological preparation was compared with histopathological diagnosis taking the latter as gold standard. Different parameters like reasons for Intraoperative consultation, best technique for preparation of smear, average time taken to render a diagnosis, and finally the accuracy of IOC was evaluated. Common reasons for the intraoperative consultation were to make or confirm a diagnosis for proper surgical intervention and to evaluate the surgical resection margin. Scrape was found to be the best method for cytological smear preparation. Average time taken to render a diagnosis was 20 minutes. Sensitivity, specificity, and overall diagnostic accuracy was 96.7, 96.6, and 96.6%, respectively. Cytology can play a valuable role in the intraoperative diagnosis of bone lesions. The method is simple, cheap, quick, and has no complication. It should be undertaken routinely, as a rapid intraoperative diagnosis will expedite timely and proper management of the patients, along with early post operative treatment and thus avoid the aggravating delays. [source] Cytologic feature by squash preparation of pineal parenchyma tumor of intermediate differentiationDIAGNOSTIC CYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 10 2008Keiji Shimada M.D., Ph.D. Abstract Pineal parenchyma tumor of intermediate differentiation (PPTID) is a very rare intracranial tumor, and pathological investigation limited to immunohistological and ultrastructural analyses have been published to date. Although intraoperative cytology is one of the important approaches for initial diagnosis in brain tumors, no or little studies on cellular morphology of PPTID have been demonstrated due to its rarity. We report here cytological features of PPTID obtained from stereotactic surgical specimens in a case of 27-year-old female manifested by dizziness and diplopia. Brain MRI revealed an unhomogeneously enhanced, large-sized tumor (56 × 52 × 60 mm) mainly located in the pineal region expanding from the midbrain to superior portion of the cerebellum and the fourth ventricle. Squash cytology showed increased nucleocytoplasmic ratio, hyperchromatic nuclei, and small rosette-like cell cluster but cellular pleomorphism was mild to moderate and necrotic background was not observed. Histology showed high cellularity, moderate nuclear atypia, and small rosette formation but neither bizarre tumor cells nor necrosis was present. Mitotic counts were very low (less than 1 per 10 high-power fields) and the MIB-1 labeling index was relatively high (10.1%). Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for neural markers such as synaptophysin, neurospecific enolase but not for glial fibrillary acidic protein or S-100. In some parts, cells were strongly reactive for neurofilament protein. Taken together, we made a final diagnosis of PPTID. This is the first presentation of cytological analysis by squash preparation that gives an important clue to accurate diagnosis of pineal parenchymal tumor and to understand its malignant potential.
