Terms modified by Intensive Training Selected AbstractsPeer mediation training and program implementation in elementary schools: Research resultsCONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY, Issue 2 2002Kathy Bickmore This research examines the implementation and effects of a peer mediation program in twenty-eight urban elementary schools. The Center for Conflict Resolution, a program of the Cleveland, Ohio, public schools, provided intensive training and follow-up support for teams of peer mediators and adult advisers at each school. Trainers were youths from the same community. Qualitative and quantitative evidence indicate that this program significantly improved the average eight- to eleven-year-old students understanding of and inclination to use nonviolent conflict resolution and his or her capacity to achieve in school. The study outlines the specific commitments from administrators and other staff members that were required to develop and implement equitable, effective, and sustainable programs. [source] Computer-based training with ortho-phonological units in dyslexic children: new investigationsDYSLEXIA, Issue 3 2009Jean Ecalle Abstract This study aims to show that training using a computer game incorporating an audio-visual phoneme discrimination task with phonological units, presented simultaneously with orthographic units, might improve literacy skills. Two experiments were conducted, one in secondary schools with dyslexic children (Experiment 1) and the other in a speech-therapy clinic with individual case studies (Experiment 2). A classical pre-test, training, post-test design was used. The main findings indicated an improvement in reading scores after short intensive training (10,h) in Experiment 1 and progress in the reading and spelling scores obtained by the dyslexic children (training for 8,h) in Experiment 2. These results are discussed within the frameworks of both the speech-specific deficit theory of dyslexia and the connectionist models of reading development. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Effect of intensive training on heart rate variability in prepubertal swimmersEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION, Issue 10 2005A. Vinet Abstract Background, In children, there is very limited evidence focusing on the beneficial effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) during childhood. Despite the fact that more and more children are engaged in intensive training programs, the question arises if such intensive training involves deleterious effects on the cardiac autonomic nervous system during childhood. Thus the aim of the present study was to compare HRV parameters in highly trained swimmer boys and untrained counterparts. Methods, Twenty prepubertal boys, aged 11,12 years old, took part in the study. The children were divided into 11 highly trained prepubertal swimmers (training sessions of 8,10 h weekly for at least 4 years) and 9 age-matched active boys. HRV analysis was performed on diurnal recordings in the frequency (short-term recordings 6 min the most ,vagal') and time (long-term recordings 4 h centred on the 6 min most ,vagal') domains. Results, No significant differences were obtained between groups for all frequency variables whatever the mode of expression (absolute in ms2, relative in Ln or %). All time-domain components were not significantly different in swimmers and untrained boys. Conclusions, The results of the present study demonstrate that participating intensively in swimming training does not induce in children changes in HRV indices. Neither time nor domain HRV variables were significantly different between untrained and highly trained prepubertal boys. Thus, intensive training in healthy children does not involve deleterious effects on HRV. [source] Assessment and Intervention to Teach Age Recognition Skills: a Suggested Programme Using the Example of a Case Study to IllustrateJOURNAL OF APPLIED RESEARCH IN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES, Issue 3 2000Dorothy M. Bell A 43-year-old man with mild intellectual disabilities was referred after several contacts with the law when he had been seen in the street talking to children who were unknown to him. Some staff members feared that he had a sexual interest in children. Other colleagues considered that the behaviour was innocent, reflecting his friendly nature, but that it was a behaviour which was misinterpreted by others. The present paper charts the assessment of this man's difficulties and abilities over a wide range of relevant areas, and a reassessment following an intensive period of one-to-one training on age-recognition skills. Although the training was unsuccessful, the measures used assisted in making a detailed assessment and providing clear instructions to care staff, all of which was to the subject's long-term benefit. The present paper also illustrates the way in which difficulties of this nature can be assessed and uses allied assessment measures which may be helpful in looking at the whole picture of any person with such problems. It also considers how these areas may then be addressed. Although, in this case, the subject was unable to learn to discriminate specific age groups despite intensive training, he was consequently able to be advised in a manner which should keep him from getting into trouble in the future and the now detailed knowledge of his abilities in all these areas is valuable for his long-term support in the community. [source] Sensitization, asthma and allergic disease in young soccer playersALLERGY, Issue 4 2009M. T. Ventura Background:, The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of allergic disease in young soccer players compared to age-matched students and to evaluate if this prevalence changes as the intensity of training increases. Methods:, A modified ECRHS questionnaire was administered to 194 soccer players divided by age as Beginners (8,11 years), Juniors (12,16 years) and Under 21 (17,20 years) to evaluate the prevalence of allergic diseases and symptoms as well as drug consumption. Subjects with a positive personal history of allergic diseases underwent skin prick and/or patch tests. Age-matched students (n = 136) were used as a control group. Results:, The prevalence of allergic diseases was 34.5% in soccer players and 31.6% in control subjects (n.s.). Skin sensitization to inhalant allergens was detected in 14.4% of symptomatic soccer players and in 19.2% of control students (n.s.). Patch tests were positive in 35.7% of soccer players and 23.0% of controls with allergic dermatitis (n.s.). The prevalence of allergic diseases did not significantly change in relation to the intensity of training. Although the relative prevalence of sensitization to perennial allergens and asthma was less frequent in soccer players than in controls, and the occurrence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction was similar in the two groups, soccer players used twice as many anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic drugs as control students. Conclusions:, An increasingly intensive training programme is not associated with greater risk of allergic disease in soccer players. Therapy regimens of allergic athletes and exercisers should be monitored more closely to guarantee adequate treatment yet avoid inappropriate drug use and doping practices. [source] |
