    Ethical leadership across cultures: a comparative analysis of German and US perspectives

    This paper examines beliefs about four aspects of ethical leadership ,Character/Integrity, Altruism, Collective Motivation and Encouragement, in Germany and the United States using data from Project GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness) and a supplemental analysis. Within the context of a push toward convergence driven by the demands of globalization and the pull toward divergence underpinned by different cultural values and philosophies in the two countries, we focus on two questions: Do middle managers from the United States and Germany differ in their beliefs about ethical leadership? And, do individuals from these two countries attribute different characteristics to ethical leaders? Results provide evidence that while German and US middle managers, on average, differed in the degree of endorsement for each aspect, they each endorsed Character/Integrity, Collective Motivation and Encouragement as important for effective leadership and had a more neutral view of the importance of Altruism. The findings are reviewed within the social-cultural context of each country. [source]

    At the center of the U.S. corporate governance controversy are questions about the integrity of the U.S. financial reporting system. Can investors trust the numbers now being reported in corporate financial statements? And, if not, what steps are being taken to bring about the return of investor trust and confidence? The academics and practitioners who took part in this discussion began by expressing their reluctance to describe the current situation as a "crisis." The consensus was that the recent governance failures are not the reflection of a general decline in corporate moral standards, but rather the work of a handful of opportunists who found ways to exploit some weaknesses in the present system. Part of the discussion focused on the expected benefits (and costs) of the heightened regulatory scrutiny provided by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the newly formed Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. But most of the panelists placed greater emphasis on the role of self-regulation in resolving problems such as the conflicts of interest within auditing and brokerage firms that played a major role in scandals like Enron and WorldCom. And rather than relying on more vigorous SEC oversight of financial statements, a number of panelists argued that top priority should be given to comprehensive reform of U.S. accounting standards, which are said to be a major source of confusion for both managers and investors.     Personality traits and health-risk behaviours in university students

    Abstract Relations between personality and health-risk behaviours in university undergraduates were examined using multiple measures of personality across multiple samples (N,=,1151). Big Five personality variables, at both factor and facet levels, were used to predict three specific health-risk behaviours: (a) tobacco consumption, (b) alcohol consumption and (c) speeding in an automobile. Our findings showed that low Conscientiousness and low Agreeableness were uniformly associated with this cluster of potentially health damaging behaviours. Extraversion was additionally associated with alcohol use. Interaction effects were found between Conscientiousness and Agreeableness on smoking and (for men only) on drinking. Other personality variables not centrally related to the Big Five, such as Risk-Taking (high) and Integrity (low), were also implicated in the present health-risk behaviours.     From European Integration to European Integrity: Should European Law Speak with Just One Voice?

    According to the European integrity principle, all national and European authorities should make sure their decisions cohere with the past decisions of other European and national authorities that create and implement the law of a complex but single European legal order. Only by doing so, it is argued, can the European political and legal community gain true authority and legitimacy in the eyes of the European citizens to whom all these decisions apply. Although European integrity is primarily a product of European integration, it has gradually become one of the requirements of further integration. The article suggests that the principle of European integrity would help dealing with the growing pressure for common European solutions under conditions of increasing diversity. It places disagreement at the centre of European politics, as both an incentive and a means of integration by way of comparison and self-reflectivity. It constitutes therefore the ideal instrument for a pluralist and flexible further constitutionalisation of the European Union. [source]

    The William H. Rehnquist Award is one of the most celebrated judicial honors in the country. It is given each year to a state court judge who demonstrates the "highest level of judicial excellence, integrity, fairness, and professional ethics." The 2008 recipient, Jonathan Lippman, was recently appointed and confirmed as Chief Judge of the State of New York. Chief Judge Lippman was previously the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division of the First Judicial Department of the New York State Supreme Court. He was appointed New York's Chief Administrative Judge by Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye and served from January 1996 to May 2007 and was responsible for the operation of a court system with a $2.4 billion budget, 1300 state-paid judges, 2300 town and village judges, and 16,000 nonjudicial personnel. Among his numerous professional activities, Chief Judge Lippman served as president of the Conference of State Court Administrators from 2005 to 2006 and was the vice-chair of the National Center for State Courts from 2005 to 2006, where he was a member of the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2007. During his tenure, Chief Judge Lippman has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2006 Fund For Modern Courts Cyrus R. Vance Tribute for Vision, Integrity and Dedication to the Fair Administration of Justice Personified by Cyrus R. Vance (November 27, 2006); the New York County Lawyers' Association Conspicuous Service Award in Recognition of Many Years of Outstanding Public Service (September 28, 2006); and the Award for Excellence in Public Service of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Attorneys in Public Service (January 24, 2006). Chief Judge Lippman received a Bachelor of Arts in Government and International Relations from New York University, Washington Square College, where he graduated cum laude in 1965.     Assessing the health of European rivers using functional ecological guilds of fish communities: standardising species classification and approaches to metric selection

    Abstract, The functional ecological guild approach is the cornerstone for the development of Indices of Biotic Integrity and multi-metric indices to assess the ecological status of aquatic systems. These indices combine metrics (unit-specific measures of a functional component of the fish community known to respond to degradation) into a single measure of ecological assessment. The guild approach provides an operational unit linking individual species characteristics with the community as a whole. Species are grouped into guilds based on some degree of overlap in their ecological niches, regardless of taxonomic relationships. Despite European fish species having been classified into ecological guilds, classification has not been standardised Europe-wide or within the context of classifying species into guilds from which metrics can be developed for ecological assessment purposes. This paper examines the approach used by the EU project FAME to classify European fish species into consistent ecological guilds and to identify suitable metrics as basic tools for the development of a standardised ecological assessment method for European rivers to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.     Evaluation of a Dialysis Sampler's Integrity in a Cold Climate

    The use of a diffusion sampler made from regenerated cellulose dialysis membrane was investigated in this study to resolve issues from previous studies on the integrity of the sampler when deployed in the field. The dialysis samplers were deployed in monitoring wells at two upstream oil- and gas-contaminated sites. The average ambient temperature in the monitoring wells was 4 ± 1°C over the 6 month duration of the test. Burst pressure and tensile strength tests were used to determine the integrity of the samplers at two field sites over time. The test results showed no adverse impacts on the samplers' integrity after 6 months. Therefore, diffusion samplers from regenerated cellulose dialysis membrane show promising results when used for long-term monitoring associated with natural attenuation assessment under the conditions tested.     This essay shows that Jean-Luc Nancy's reconceptualization of corporeality in such texts as L'Intrus and Corpus can be an important ally to feminist theories of body. I introduce Nancy's ontology and argue that his rejection of the unified, integrated body of humanist discourses in favor of dis-integrated bodies constituted by multiple alterities and his consequent reinterpretation of body as a "being-exscribed" begin the task of thinking bodies beyond traditional dualisms and their ahistorical and rationalist frameworks. I then address three potential criticisms of Nancy's work and suggest that though there may be reasons to move cautiously in adopting the framework he provides, his work harbors resources directly beneficial to critiques of prevailing forms of gender normativity.     Nursing-Sensitive Outcome Implementation and Reliability Testing in a Tertiary Care Setting

    PURPOSE To describe the NOC outcomes most relevant for specialty nursing practice and in selected field sites representing the continuum of care; to assess the adequacy of measures (reliability, validity, sensitivity, specificity, practicality); and to describe the linkages among nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes in clinical decision making. METHODS Data were collected on 434 patients during the 12-month data collection period at a tertiary care center: cardiac surgery intensive care (n= 76), cardiac transplant unit (n= 153), and medical unit (n= 205). Medical diagnoses of patients on the two cardiac units were related to cardiac disease. Medical diagnoses of patients on the medical unit were extremely varied (ranging from e.g., gout to pneumonia). Data were collected on 65 separate outcome labels for a total of 633 ratings. FINDINGS In the cardiac transplant ICU, data were collected on 42 outcomes: 30 had an average interrater reliability of ,85%, and 16 had an absolute agreement interrater reliability of ,85%. In the cardiac surgery ICU, data were collected on 30 outcomes: 25 had an average interrater reliabilty of ,85%, 6 had an absolute agreement interrater of ,85%. In the medical unit, data were collected on 45 outcomes: 41 had an average interrater reliability of ,85%, 14 had an absolute agreement interrater reliability of ,85%. Four outcomes have been implemented into the documentation system for all patients: Tissue Integrity: Skin and Mucous Membranes, Mobility Level, Knowledge: Disease Process, and Coping. CONCLUSIONS Overall, nursing staff were very positive about having the opportunity to participate in nursing research. Staff were able to think about the relative status of their patient and how nursing care contributes to the patient's recovery. They appreciated the opportunity to discuss this with a colleague during the interrater exercise. Increased familiarity with NOC allows staff members to determine which outcomes comprise core nursing-sensitive outcomes for their clinical setting. [source]

    Capsaicin-Sensitive Sensory Neurons Contribute to the Maintenance of Trabecular Bone Integrity,

    Abstract This investigation used capsaicin to selectively lesion unmyelinated sensory neurons in rats. Neuronal lesioning induced a loss of trabecular integrity, reduced bone mass and strength, and depleted neuropeptides in nerve and bone. These data suggest that capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves contribute to trabecular bone integrity. Introduction: Familial dysautomia is an autosomal recessive disease in which patients suffer from unmyelinated sensory neuron loss, reduced BMD, and frequent fractures. It has been proposed that the loss of neurotransmitters synthesized by unmyelinated neurons adversely affects bone integrity in this hereditary syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine whether small sensory neurons are required for the maintenance of bone integrity in rats. Materials and Methods: Ten-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with either capsaicin or vehicle. In vivo DXA scanning and ,CT scanning, and histomorphometry were used to evaluate BMD, structure, and cellular activity. Bone strength was measured in distal femoral sections. Body weight and gastrocnemius/soleus weights were measured and spontaneous locomotor activity was monitored. Peroneal nerve morphometry was evaluated using light and electron microscopy. Substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) content in the sciatic nerve and proximal tibia were determined by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Substance P signaling was measured using a sciatic nerve stimulation extravasation assay. Results: Four weeks after capsaicin treatment, there was a loss of BMD in the metaphyses of the tibia and femur. In the proximal tibia, the osteoclast number and surface increased, osteoblast activity and bone formation were impaired, and trabecular bone volume and connectivity were diminished. There was also a loss of bone strength in the distal femur. No changes occurred in body weight, 24-h grid-crossing activity, weight bearing, or muscle mass after capsaicin treatment, indicating that skeletal unloading did not contribute to the loss of bone integrity. Capsaicin treatment destroyed 57% of the unmyelinated sensory axons, reduced the substance P and CGRP content in the sciatic nerve and proximal tibia, and inhibited neurogenic extravasation. Conclusion: These results support the hypothesis that capsaicin-sensitive sensory neurons contribute to the maintenance of trabecular bone integrity. Capsaicin-sensitive neurons have efferent functions in the tissues they innervate, effects mediated by transmitters released from the peripheral nerve terminals. We postulate that the deleterious effects of capsaicin treatment on trabecular bone are mediated by reductions in local neurotransmitter content and release. [source]


    Loss of Osteocyte Integrity in Association with Microdamage and Bone Remodeling After Fatigue In Vivo,

    Abstract As a result of fatigue, bone sustains microdamage, which is then repaired by bone-remodeling processes. How osteoclastic activity is targeted at the removal of microdamaged regions of bone matrix is unknown. In the current studies, we tested the hypothesis that changes in osteocyte integrity, through the initiation of regulated cell death (apoptosis), are associated with fatigue-related microdamage and bone resorption. Ulnae of adult rats were fatigue-loaded to produce a known degree of matrix damage. Osteocyte integrity was then assessed histomorphometrically from terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase,mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate,nick end labeling (TUNEL),stained sections to detect cells undergoing DNA fragmentation associated with apoptosis; toluidine blue,stained sections were used for secondary morphological confirmation. Ten days after loading, large numbers of TUNEL-positive osteocytes were found in bone surrounding microcracks and in bone surrounding intracortical resorption spaces (,300% increases over controls, p < 0.005). TUNEL labeling in loaded ulnae at sites distant from microcracks or resorption foci did not differ from that in control bone. Osteocytes in toluidine blue,stained sections showed equivalent trends to TUNEL-stained sections, with significant increases in pyknotic nuclei and empty lacunae associated with microcracks and intracortical resorption spaces. TUNEL-positive osteocytes were observed around bone microdamage by 1 day after loading (p < 0.01 relative to baseline), and their number remained elevated throughout the entire experimental period. Increases in empty lacunae and decreases in normal osteocyte numbers were observed over time as well. These studies show that (1) osteocyte apoptosis is induced by bone fatigue, (2) this apoptosis is localized to regions of bone that contain microcracks, and (3) osteoclastic resorption after fatigue also coincides with regions of osteocyte apoptosis. The strong associations between microdamage, osteocyte apoptosis, and subsequent bone remodeling support the hypothesis that osteocyte apoptosis provides a key part of the activation or signaling mechanisms by which osteoclasts target bone for removal after fatigue-induced matrix injury.     The efficiency of mitochondrial electron transport chain is increased in the long-lived mrg19 Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Summary Integrity of mitochondrial functionality is a key determinant of longevity in several organisms. In particular, reduced mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) production leading to decreased mtDNA damage is believed to be a crucial aspect of longevity. The generation of low mtROS was thought to be due to low mitochondrial oxygen consumption. However, recent studies have shown that higher mitochondrial oxygen consumption could still result in low mtROS and contribute to longevity. This increased mitochondrial efficiency (i.e. low mtROS generated despite high oxygen consumption) was explained as a result of mitochondrial biogenesis, which provides more entry points for the electrons to the electron transport chain (ETC), thereby resulting in low mtROS production. In this study, we provide evidence for the existence of an alternative pathway to explain the observed higher mitochondrial efficiency in the long-lived mrg19 mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Although we observe similar amounts of mitochondria in mrg19 and wild-type (wt) yeast, we find that mrg19 mitochondria have higher expression of ETC components per mitochondria in comparison with the wt. These findings demonstrate that more efficient mitochondria because of increased ETC per mitochondria can also produce less mtROS. Taken together, our findings provide evidence for an alternative explanation for the involvement of higher mitochondrial activity in prolonging lifespan. We anticipate that similar mechanisms might also exist in eukaryotes including human. [source]

This ethics is constituted by the principles of respect for the dignity of persons, and the acceptance of responsibility for the consequences of our moral choices. I show how it offers more than the scant resources of postmodern ethics to educators who seek to enable their students to develop a deeply-founded sense of moral comportment and an authentic identity in the face of the moral complexity of late modernity's globalised and plural society.     59 Utility of the periphyton index of biotic integrity (PIBI) as an indicator of acid mine drainage impacts in southeastern ohio

    In the Appalachian region, numerous streams are polluted with acid mine drainage (AMD). These waters are sulfate-rich with elevated amounts of total acidity, low pH, and high levels of dissolved metals. Biotic multimetric indices, such as the Periphyton Index of Biotic Integrity (PIBI) have been employed to determine water quality across a variety of environmental conditions and may prove useful for AMD impacts. This study was initiated (1) to evaluate the PIBI for distinguishing AMD impact in streams and (2) to examine whether PIBI scores are impacted by seasonal differences. Twelve AMD and three reference streams were sampled for periphyton in June, August, and October. Water chemistry was collected at least once during the sampling period. Preliminary results showed that PIBI scores were significantly different (p<0.05) among the seasons. In addition, the seasonal trends in PIBI scores among streams were not consistent. The PIBI scores were correlated with six water chemistry variables in August and with at least one variable indicative of AMD in each season sampled. PCA and UPGMA analyses of water chemistry data grouped the streams into five categories: (1) moderately impacted AMD streams with lower total dissolved solids, sulfate, total aluminum, and alkalinity, and higher sulfate; (2) AMD streams with higher alkalinity and lower total aluminum; (3) AMD streams with lower alkalinity and higher total aluminum; (4) reference streams and (5) an outlier reference stream affected by nutrients. Relationships between the groups based on water chemistry and the groups derived from the PIBI will be discussed. [source]

    Altered White Matter Integrity in Adolescent Binge Drinkers

    Background:, White matter integrity has been found to be compromised in adult alcoholics, but it is unclear when in the course of alcohol exposure white matter abnormalities become apparent. This study assessed microstructural white matter integrity among adolescent binge drinkers with no history of an alcohol use disorder. Methods:, We used diffusion tensor imaging to examine fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure of directional coherence of white matter tracts, among teens with (n = 14) and without (n = 14) histories of binge drinking but no history of alcohol use disorder, matched on age, gender, and education. Results:, Binge drinkers had lower FA than controls in 18 white matter areas (clusters ,27 contiguous voxels, each with p < 0.01) throughout the brain, including the corpus callosum, superior longitudinal fasciculus, corona radiata, internal and external capsules, and commissural, limbic, brainstem, and cortical projection fibers, while exhibiting no areas of higher FA. Among binge drinkers, lower FA in 6 of these regions was linked to significantly greater lifetime hangover symptoms and/or higher estimated peak blood alcohol concentrations. Conclusions:, Binge drinking adolescents demonstrated widespread reductions of FA in major white matter pathways. Although preliminary, these results could indicate that infrequent exposure to large doses of alcohol during youth may compromise white matter fiber coherence. [source]

    Abstract:, This study evaluated biological integrity expectations of fish assemblages in wadeable streams for the Alabama portion of the Choctawhatchee River watershed using a multimetric approach. Thirty-four randomly selected stream sites were sampled in late spring 2001 to calibrate an index of biotic integrity (IBI). Validation data were collected during the spring 2001, and summer and fall of 2003 from disturbed and least-impacted targeted sites (n = 20). Thirty-five candidate metrics were evaluated for their responsiveness to environmental degradation. Twelve metrics were selected to evaluate wadeable streams and four replacement metrics were selected for headwater streams. Scores that ranged from 58 to 60 were considered to be representative of excellent biotic integrity (none found in this study), scores of 48-52 as good integrity (31% of the sites in this study), 40-44 as fair (43%), 28-34 as poor (21%), and 12-22 as very poor (5%). Of the four stream condition categories (urban, cattle, row crop, and least impacted), the IBI scores for urban and cattle sites differed significantly from least-impacted sites. Row crop sites, although not significantly different from least-impacted, tended to have greater variability than the other categories. Lower IBI scores at both urban and cattle sites suggest that the IBI accurately reflects stream impairment in the Choctawhatchee River drainage. [source]


    Hydrologic Connectivity and the Contribution of Stream Headwaters to Ecological Integrity at Regional Scales,

    Abstract:, Cumulatively, headwater streams contribute to maintaining hydrologic connectivity and ecosystem integrity at regional scales. Hydrologic connectivity is the water-mediated transport of matter, energy and organisms within or between elements of the hydrologic cycle. Headwater streams compose over two-thirds of total stream length in a typical river drainage and directly connect the upland and riparian landscape to the rest of the stream ecosystem. Altering headwater streams, e.g., by channelization, diversion through pipes, impoundment and burial, modifies fluxes between uplands and downstream river segments and eliminates distinctive habitats. The large-scale ecological effects of altering headwaters are amplified by land uses that alter runoff and nutrient loads to streams, and by widespread dam construction on larger rivers (which frequently leaves free-flowing upstream portions of river systems essential to sustaining aquatic biodiversity). We discuss three examples of large-scale consequences of cumulative headwater alteration. Downstream eutrophication and coastal hypoxia result, in part, from agricultural practices that alter headwaters and wetlands while increasing nutrient runoff. Extensive headwater alteration is also expected to lower secondary productivity of river systems by reducing stream-system length and trophic subsidies to downstream river segments, affecting aquatic communities and terrestrial wildlife that utilize aquatic resources. Reduced viability of freshwater biota may occur with cumulative headwater alteration, including for species that occupy a range of stream sizes but for which headwater streams diversify the network of interconnected populations or enhance survival for particular life stages. Developing a more predictive understanding of ecological patterns that may emerge on regional scales as a result of headwater alterations will require studies focused on components and pathways that connect headwaters to river, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems. Linkages between headwaters and downstream ecosystems cannot be discounted when addressing large-scale issues such as hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico and global losses of biodiversity. [source]


    COST EFFECTIVENESS OF VEGETATIVE FILTER STRIPS AND INSTREAM HALF-LOGS FOR ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION,

    ABSTRACT: This paper presents the results of cost effectiveness (CE) analysis of vegetative filter strips (VFS) and instream half-logs as tools for recovering scores on a fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) in the upper Wabash River watershed (UW) in Indiana. Three assumptions were made about recovery time for IBI scores (5,15, and 30 years) and social discount rates (1, 3, and 5 percent), which were tested for sensitivity of the estimated CE ratios. Effectiveness of VFS was estimated using fish IBIs and riparian forest cover from 49 first-order to fifth-order stream reaches. Half-log structures had been installed for approximately two years in the UW prior to the study and provided a basis for estimates of cost and maintenance. Cost effectiveness ratios for VFS decreased from $387 to $277 per 100 m for a 1 percent increase in IBI scores from first-to fifth-order streams with 3 percent discount and 30-year recovery. This cost weighted by proportion of stream orders was $360. The ratio decreased with decreasing time of recovery and discount rate. Based on installation costs and an assumption of equal recovery rates, half-logs were two-thirds to one-half as cost-effective as VFS. Half-logs would be a cost-effective supplement to VFS in low order streams if they can be proven to recover IBI scores faster than VFS do. This study provides baseline data and a framework for planning and determining the cost of stream restoration. [source]

    This article is concerned with the devaluation of the work of public intellectuals within the academic community. The principal reason given for this devaluation is that the work of the public intellectual does not have intellectual integrity as independent thought and original scholarship. I develop three models of public intellectual work: the permanent,critic model, the popularizer model, and the public,theorist model. I then consider each model in relation to the concern with intellectual integrity and conclude that both independent thought and original scholarship are possible within work that is engaged with nonacademic publics.
