Selected AbstractsMaternal and neonatal outcomes following diabetes in pregnancy in Far North Queensland, AustraliaAUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY, Issue 4 2009Bronwyn DAVIS Background: Diabetes in pregnancy (DIP) is increasing and is associated with a number of adverse consequences for both the mother and the child. Aims: To compare local maternal and neonatal outcomes with state and national data. Methods: Chart audit of all DIP delivered during 2004 at a regional teaching hospital and compare outcomes with national benchmark, Queensland and national Indigenous data. Results: The local DIP frequency was 6.7%. The local compared to benchmark and state data demonstrated a higher frequency of Indigenous mothers (43.6% vs 6.8% vs 5.5%), caesarean sections (50.7% vs 26% vs 32.0%), hypoglycaemia (40.7% vs 19.5% vs 2.7%) and respiratory distress (16.6% vs 4.5% vs 2.3%) in infants, fewer normal birthweights (64.8% vs 82.6% vs 80.4%) and full-term deliveries. More local mothers compared to benchmark had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (15.4% vs 8.7%) but fewer used insulin (31.0% vs 46.6%); compared to state data, fewer women had gestational diabetes (79.5% vs 91.2%), however, insulin use was higher (22.8%). Furthermore, Aborigines had fewer pregnancies compared to Torres Strait Islanders (3.0 vs 5.0) and less insulin use (21.9% vs 59.3%) (P = 0.008,0.024). In contrast, non-Indigenous versus Indigenous women showed fewer pregnancies, less T2DM (7.8% vs 23.7%), better glycaemic control, longer babies, more full-term deliveries and less severe neonatal hypoglycaemia. Comparing local and national Indigenous data, local showed poorer outcomes, however, only 11.8% had diabetes or hypertension nationally. Conclusion: The local cohort had poorer outcomes probably reflecting a more disadvantaged. Few differences were found between local Indigenous groups. [source] Trader associations and urban food systems in Ghana: institutionalist approaches to understanding urban collective actionINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF URBAN AND REGIONAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2003Fergus Lyon This article explores the activities and functioning of urban food trader associations in Ghana. These associations are strong indigenous groups of women traders who have been able to sustain cooperation over many years in contrast to many other forms of collective action. They shape urban food systems and link urban consumers with rural producers. The analysis relates the findings to the literature on socio-economics, institutional economics and collective action. Of particular interest are the social relations and networks within associations that allow traders to access informal credit and information with contracts based on trust. The factors that contribute to the ability to sustain collective action are explored. These include leadership structures and acceptance of the authority of market queens by other women traders, as well as the need to have the benefits that come from membership of associations. Cet article porte sur les activités et le fonctionnement d'associations urbaines de commerce alimentaire au Ghana. Il s'agit de puissants groupes autochtones de marchandes qui ont pu préserver une coopération sur de nombreuses années, contrairement à bien d'autres formes d'action collective. Ces associations configurent les systèmes d'approvisionnement des villes, reliant consommateurs urbains et producteurs ruraux. L'analyse rapproche résultats et références documentaires en socio-économie, économie institutionnelle et action collective. On soulignera les relations et réseaux sociaux au sein des associations, lesquels permettent aux commerçantes d'accéder à des sources parallèles d'information et de crédit sur la base de contrats de confiance. [source] Media coverage of ,decades of disparity' in ethnic mortality in AotearoaJOURNAL OF COMMUNITY & APPLIED SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 6 2004Darrin Hodgetts Abstract For some time we have known that factors such as economic prosperity, community cohesion, and social justice bear on health. These societal influences are particularly pertinent to the health of indigenous groups, such as Maori, who are still responding to processes of colonization. In July 2003 the New Zealand Ministry of Health published a report entitled ,Decades of Disparity', which proposed (among other things) that neoliberal policies of the last two decades impacted negatively on mortality rates for Maori and Pacific peoples, when compared with Pakeha. In this article we explore media coverage of this report through analyses of media releases, radio, television and newspaper items. It is argued that as the story evolved media increasingly challenged the importance of societal determinants of health, preferring individual level explanations. As a result coverage failed to give due emphasis to structural health concerns for Maori, which necessitate social change. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Ethnobiology of the Nilgiri Hills, IndiaPHYTOTHERAPY RESEARCH, Issue 2 2002S. Rajan Abstract The Nilgiri is a popular massif towering high in the Western Ghats in South India with an altitude of 2623,m. Nature has been magnanimous in bestowing Nilgiri district with rich evergreen temperate to tropical forests. A high degree of biodiversity, marked by varied flora and fauna of good therapeutic potential as well as the varied number of indigenous groups of people in this area, makes it very popular among herbalists. The district has six anthropologically well defined ethnic groups namely Todas, Kotas, Kurumbas, Irulas, Paniyas and Kattunayakas living here possibly since 1200 B.C. The present review highlights the ethnobiological profile of six indigenous populations and their dependence on ambient flora and fauna for traditional health care needs. It has been observed that about 2700 therapeutically potent plant species are available in this hill station of which almost all have come from local medicine. Some have been explored scientifically. However, about 150 plant species are still to be explored for their therapeutic potential. The ethnography, phytochemical and therapeutic uses as well as the anthropological perspectives of the local medicines have been discussed in this review. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Oil industry, wild meat trade and roads: indirect effects of oil extraction activities in a protected area in north-eastern EcuadorANIMAL CONSERVATION, Issue 4 2009E. Suárez Abstract Starting in 1994, a wholesale wild meat market developed in north-eastern Ecuador, involving Waorani and Kichwa people in the area of influence of a road built to facilitate oil extraction within Yasuní National Park. Between 2005 and 2007, we recorded the trade of 11 717 kg of wild meat in this market, with pacas Cuniculus paca, white-lipped peccaries Tayassu pecari, collared peccaries Pecari tajacu and woolly monkeys Lagothrix poeppiggi accounting for 80% of the total biomass. Almost half of the wild meat brought to the market was transported by dealers for resale at restaurants in Tena, a medium-sized town 234 km west of the market. Prices of wild meat were 1.3,2 times higher than the price of meat of domestic animals, suggesting that it is a different commodity and not a supplementary protein source in the urban areas where it is consumed. The actual price of transportation between the local communities and the market was a significant predictor of the amount of meat sold in Pompeya. Based on this relationship the Waorani hunters sold exceptionally larger amounts of wild meat than would be expected if they would not have the transportation subsidies provided by the oil companies. Although the scale of this wild meat wholesale market is still relatively small, its dynamic reflects the complex interactions that emerge as the overriding influence of oil companies or other private industries modify the culture and subsistence patterns of marginalized indigenous groups, increasing their potential impacts on wildlife and natural ecosystems.
