Distribution and conservation of the Gaur Bos gaurus in the Indian Subcontinent

ABSTRACT The Gaur Bos gaurus ranges from India to peninsular Malaysia. Its distribution, status and conservation in the Indian subcontinent are reviewed here on the basis of available information, both published papers and unpublished census reports of forest departments, and field survey data from north-eastern India and parts of Bhutan and Nepal. The Gaur is found in three disjunct regions, south-western India, central India and north-eastern India (including Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh). Within these regions the distribution is highly fragmented and includes a number of small non-viable isolated populations. The habitat in north-eastern India is still contiguous with that in Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh and to some extent with Nepal. Although the estimated population of the Gaur is 23 000,34 000, it is declining alarmingly. Populations outside the protected areas may not last long. An action plan has been proposed for its conservation. [source]


A NEW SPECIES OF DICERORHINUS (RHINOCEROTIDAE) FROM THE PLIO-PLEISTOCENE OF MYANMAR

Abstract:, A skull and mandible of the new species Dicerorhinus gwebinensis sp. nov. of Rhinocerotidae (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) is described. The material is collected from the upper part of the Irrawaddy sediments (Plio-Pleistocene) in central Myanmar. D. gwebinensis sp. nov. is morphologically more similar to the extant species D. sumatrensis (Sumatran rhinoceros) than to other species of the genus but differs from D. sumatrensis in having the comparatively shorter nasal, the more concave dorsal profile of the skull, the more elevated occiput and presence of molar crista in M3/. This is the first discovery of Dicerorhinus in the upper Miocene to lower Pleistocene of the Indian subcontinent and Mainland Southeast Asia, and fills the chronological and geographical gap of this lineage in Asia. The Dicerorhinus clade probably migrated into Southeast Asia from East Asia by the Pliocene or early Pleistocene. This hypothesis is supported by the scarcity or absence of this clade in the Neogene mammalian fauna of the Indian Subcontinent. [source]

misuse of coastal vegetation bioshields for managing natural disasters
Abstract Vegetated coastal ecosystems provide goods and services to billions of people. In the aftermath of a series of recent natural disasters, including the Indian Ocean Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and Cyclone Nargis, coastal vegetation has been widely promoted for the purpose of reducing the impact of large storm surges and tsunami. In this paper, we review the use of coastal vegetation as a "bioshield" against these extreme events. Our objective is to alter bioshield policy and reduce the long-term negative consequences for biodiversity and human capital. We begin with an overview of the scientific literature, in particular focusing on studies published since the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and discuss the science of wave attenuation by vegetation. We then explore case studies from the Indian subcontinent and evaluate the detrimental impacts bioshield plantations can have upon native ecosystems, drawing a distinction between coastal restoration and the introduction of exotic species in inappropriate locations. Finally, we place bioshield policies into a political context, and outline a new direction for coastal vegetation policy and research. [source]


Diabetes service provision: a qualitative study of the experiences and views of Pakistani and Indian patients with Type 2 diabetes

Abstract Aims To explore Pakistani and Indian patients' experiences of, and views about, diabetes services in order to inform the development of culturally sensitive services. Design Qualitative, interview study involving 23 Pakistani and nine Indian patients with Type 2 diabetes recruited from general practices and the local community in Edinburgh, Scotland. Data collection and analysis occurred concurrently and recruitment continued until no new themes emerged from the interviews. Results Respondents expressed gratitude for the availability of free diabetes services in Britain, as they were used to having to pay to access health care on the Indian subcontinent. Most looked to services for the prompt detection and treatment of complications, rather than the provision of advice about managing their condition. As respondents attached importance to receiving physical examinations, they could be disappointed when these were not offered by health-care professionals. They disliked relying on interpreters and identified a need for bilingual professionals with whom they could discuss their diabetes care directly. Conclusions Gratitude for free services in Britain may instil a sense of indebtedness which makes it difficult for Pakistanis and Indians to be critical of their diabetes care. Health-care professionals may need to describe their roles carefully, and explain how different diabetes services fit together, to avoid Pakistani and Indian patients perceiving treatment as unsatisfactory. Whilst linkworker schemes may meet patients' need to receive culturally sensitive information in their first language, work is needed to assess their effectiveness and sustainability. [source]


High-throughput multiplex microsatellite marker assay for detection and quantification of adulteration in Basmati rice (Oryza sativa)

Abstract Basmati rice is a very special type of aromatic rice known world-wide for its extra long grains and pleasant and distinct aroma. Traditional Basmati rice cultivars, confined to Indo-Gangetic regions of the Indian subcontinent, are often reported to be adulterated with crossbred Basmati varieties and long-grain non-Basmati varieties in the export market. At present, there is no commercial scale technology to reliably detect adulteration. We report here a CE-based multiplex microsatellite marker assay for detection as well as quantification of adulteration in Basmati rice samples. The single-tube assay multiplexes eight microsatellite loci to generate variety-specific allele profiles that can detect adulteration from 1% upwards. The protocol also incorporates a quantitative-competitive PCR-based analysis for quantification of adulteration. Accuracy of quantification has been shown to be ±1.5%. The experiments used to develop and validate the methodology are described. [source]


Immune response to leishmania: paradox rather than paradigm

Abstract The leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. Various Leishmania species can cause human infection, producing a spectrum of clinical manifestations. It is estimated that 350 million people are at risk, with a global yearly incidence of 1,1.5 million for cutaneous and 500 000 for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). VL is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in East Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Coinfection with HIV enhances the risk of the disease. The only control measure currently available in India is case detection and treatment with antimonial drugs, which are expensive, not always available and cannot be self-administered. Newer drugs like oral miltefosine have not become widely available. Vector and reservoir control is difficult due to the elusive nature of the vector and the diversity of the animal reservoir. A detailed knowledge of immune response to the parasite would help in designing prophylactic and therapeutic strategies against this infection. [source]


A deterministic seismic hazard map of India and adjacent areas

SUMMARY A seismic hazard map of the territory of India and adjacent areas has been prepared using a deterministic approach based on the computation of synthetic seismograms complete with all main phases. The input data set consists of structural models, seismogenic zones, focal mechanisms and earthquake catalogues. There are few probabilistic hazard maps available for the Indian subcontinent, however, this is the first study aimed at producing a deterministic seismic hazard map for the Indian region using realistic strong ground motion modelling with the knowledge of the physical process of earthquake generation, the level of seismicity and wave propagation in anelastic media. Synthetic seismograms at a frequency of 1 Hz have been generated at a regular grid of 0.2°× 0.2° by the modal summation technique. The seismic hazard, expressed in terms of maximum displacement (Dmax), maximum velocity (Vmax), and design ground acceleration (DGA), has been extracted from the synthetic signals and mapped on a regular grid over the studied territory. The estimated values of the peak ground acceleration are compared with the observed data available for the Himalayan region and are found to be in agreement. Many parts of the Himalayan region have DGA values exceeding 0.6 g. The epicentral areas of the great Assam earthquakes of 1897 and 1950 in northeast India represent the maximum hazard with DGA values reaching 1.2,1.3 g. The peak velocity and displacement in the same region is estimated as 120,177 cm s,1 and 60,90 cm, respectively. [source]


The Predicament Of Ideas In Culture: Translation And Historiography

Rather than a simple transfer of words or texts from one language to another, on the model of the bilingual dictionary, translation has become understood as a translingual act of transcoding cultural material , a complex act of communication. Much recent work on translation in history grows out of interest in the effects of European colonialism, especially within Asian studies, where interest has been driven by the contrast between the experiences of China and Japan, which were never formally colonized, and the alternative examples of peoples without strong, centralized states , those of the Indian subcontinent and the Tagalog in the Philippines , who were colonized by European powers. This essay reviews several books published in recent years, one group of which share the general interpretation that colonial powers forced their subjects to "translate" their local language, sociality, or culture into the terms of the dominant colonial power: because the colonial power controls representation and forces its subjects to use the colonial language, it is in a position to construct the forms of indigenous and subject identity. The other books under review here are less concerned with power in colonial situations than with the fact of different languages, cultures, or practices and the work of "translating" between the two , particularly the efforts of indigenous agents to introduce European ideas and institutions to their respective peoples. Allelic heterogeneity of molecular events in human coagulation factor IX in Asian Indians,,

Abstract Mutations in Factor IX gene (F9) cause X-linked recessive bleeding disorder hemophilia B. Here, we characterized molecular events in nine North Indian hemophiliac families identifying four missense mutations (three novel), two nonsense mutations, and a deletion. We have also captured the mutational spectrum of this disease in India based on available reports and established their genotype/phenotype relationships. Indian F9 mutations data indicate the absence of an important germline mutagen in the Indian subcontinent over the last century, and are consistent with previously made conclusions that universal, presumably endogenous factors are predominant in the causation of the spontaneous mutations in F9. We also analyzed the distribution of Ala194Thr polymorphism in 1231 Asian Indians and have established that Ala variant is far more frequent and can certainly be exploited for carrier detection, contrary to earlier reports. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc [source]


A to G transitions at 260, 386 and 437 in DAZL gene are not associated with spermatogenic failure in Indian population

Summary The autosomal DAZL (Deleted-in- Azoospermic- Like) gene, mapped to the short arm of the human chromosome 3, is the precursor for the Y-chromosomal DAZ cluster, which encodes for putative RNA-binding proteins. Mutations in the DAZL have been reported to be associated with spermatogenic failure in Taiwanese population but not in Caucasians. As there was no study on Indian populations, we have analysed the entire coding sequences of exons 2 and 3 of DAZL in a total of 1010 men from Indian subcontinent, including 660 infertile men with 598 non-obstructive azoospermia, 62 severe oligozoospermia and 350 normozoospermic fertile control men, to investigate whether mutation(s) in the DAZL is associated with male infertility. Interestingly, none of our samples (1010) showed A386G (T54A) mutation, which was found to be associated with spermatogenic failure in Taiwanese population. In contrast, A260G (T12A) mutation was observed in both infertile and normozoospermic fertile control men, without any significant association with infertile groups (,2 = 0.342; p = 0.556). Similarly, we have found a novel A437G (I71V) mutation, which is also present in both infertile and normozoospermic fertile control men without any significant difference (,2 = 0.476; p = 0.490). Our study clearly demonstrates the complete absence of the A386G (T54A) mutation in Indian subcontinent and the other two mutations , A260G (T12A) and A437G (I71V) , observed are polymorpic. Therefore, we conclude that these mutations in the DAZL gene are not associated with male infertility in Indian subcontinent. [source]


Characteristics, evolution and mechanisms of the summer monsoon onset over Southeast Asia

Abstract Based on the 1979,95 mean pentad reanalysis data from the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction, the climatological characteristics and physical mechanism of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset are investigated. Special focus is given to whether the ASM onset starts earlier over the Indochina Peninsula than over the South China Sea (SCS) and why the ASM is established the earliest over Southeast Asia. An examination of the composite thermodynamic and dynamic quantities confirms that the ASM onset commences earliest over the Indochina Peninsula, as highlighted by active convection and rainfall resulting from the convergence of southwesterly flow from the Bay of Bengal (BOB) vortex and easterly winds associated with the subtropical anticyclone over the SCS. Two other important characteristics not previously noted are also identified: the earliest reversal of meridional temperature gradient throughout the entire troposphere and the corresponding establishment of an easterly vertical wind shear, which are due to upper level warming caused by eddy (convective) transport of latent heat. These changes in the large-scale circulation suggest that, in addition to rainfall, a reversal in the planetary-scale circulation should be included in determining the timing of the ASM onset. With such a consideration, the climatological ASM onset occurs first over southeastern BOB and southwestern Indochina Peninsula in early May, and then advances northeastward to reach the SCS by the fourth pentad of May (16,20 May). The monsoon then covers the entire Southeast Asia region by the end of May. Subsequently, a similar onset process begins over the eastern Arabian Sea, India and western BOB, and the complete establishment of the ASM over India is accomplished in mid June. In the process of the onset of each ASM component, the reversal of the upper level planetary-scale circulation depends strongly on that of the meridional temperature gradient. Over the Indochina Peninsula, the seasonal transition of upper level temperature results from convection-induced diabatic heating, whereas over western Asia it is attributed to subsidence warming induced by the active ascending motion over the former region. The steady increase in surface sensible heating over the Indian subcontinent and the latent heating over the tropical Indian Ocean in April to early May appear to be the major impetus for the development of the cyclonic vortex over the BOB. A similar enhancement over the Arabian Peninsula and the surrounding regions is also identified to be crucial to the development of the so-called onset vortex over the Arabian Sea, and then ultimately to the ASM onset over India. Elevated lipoprotein (a) and apolipoprotein B to AI ratio in South Asian patients with ischaemic stroke,

Summary Background:, Stroke is a continuing cause of excess cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality amongst migrants from the Indian subcontinent (South Asians) living in Britain. However, little is known about the dyslipidaemia associated with stroke in South Asians. In particular, the highly atherogenic lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] and high apolipoprotein (Apo) B to AI ratio are emerging risk factors for CVD. Methods:, Using a case,control study, we investigated features of the dyslipidaemia in South Asian patients with stroke compared with South Asian subjects with no history of clinically detectable stroke. We studied 55 consecutive South Asian patients with ischaemic stroke (confirmed on computerised scan of the brain) and 85 controls. Results:, The stroke patients were significantly older than controls (65.2 vs. 59.8 years, p = 0.001), but were similarly matched for male gender (63.6 vs. 61.2%), smoking habit (20.7 vs. 18.1%) and presence of type 2 diabetes (25.5 vs. 19.3%). There were no differences between serum total cholesterol (p = 0.07) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.08) between the groups, but stroke patients had higher serum triglycerides (p = 0.005). Mean [95% confidence interval (CI)] Apo B to AI ratio was higher amongst stroke patients [1.0 (0.9,1.0) vs. 0.7 (0.7,0.75), p < 0.001]. Similarly, geometric mean serum Lp(a) was significantly higher (p = 0.037) in stroke patients [19.9 mg/dl (14.0,28.5)] vs. controls [15.1 mg/dl (11.4,20.1)]. On logistic regression, stroke was independently associated with age and Apo B to AI ratio (p < 0.01). Conclusion:, The present study suggests that Lp(a) and the Apo B to AI ratio are associated with ischaemic stroke in South Asians. A prospective analysis is needed to elucidate the role of Lp(a), Apo B and AI as risk factors for ischaemic stroke in this population, as well as the effects of intervention. [source]


The level of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in kajal and surma of major Indian brands

Synopsis Kajal and surma are eye cosmetics extensively used in Indian subcontinent. Kajal is prepared by burning of vegetable oil and butter oil while surma by grinding of the stones. High performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography,mass spectrometry instruments were used for quantification and confirmation of 16 polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Significant concentration of PAH was found in all the samples examined. The median concentration of PAH ranged from 0.14 (lowest, anthracene) to 31.18 ,g g,1 [dibenz(a,h)anthracene] in kajal sample and from not detectable concentration (naphthalene) to 197.47 ,g g,1 of benzo(a)pyrene in surma sample. Fifteen PAHs were detected in all the samples. Therefore the use of kajal and surma in eye should be strictly restricted. Résumé Le Kajal et le Surma sont des composés très utilisés sur le sous-continent indien pour le maquillage des yeux. Ils sont préparés par calcination d'huile végétale et d'huile de beurre, puis par broyage des résidus. La chromatographie liquide haute pression et la chromatographie en phase gazeuse couplée à la spectrométrie de masse ont été employées pour quantifier et valider seize hydrocarbures polyaromatiques (PAHs). Des concentrations significatives en PAHs ont été trouvées dans les échantillons examinés. La concentration médiane en PAH classées de la faible à la plus élevée est de 0,14 ,g g,1 (anthracène) à 31,18 ,g g,1 (dibenz (a,h) anthracène) dans l'échantillon de Kajal et d'une présence ND (naphtalène) à 197,47 ,g g,1 (benzo (a) pyrène) dans l'échantillon de Surma. Quinze PAHs ont été détectés dans tous les échantillons. En conséquence, l'utilisation de Kajal et de Surma pour la cosmétique des yeux doit être limitée de façon stricte. [source]


Geology of the summit limestone of Mount Qomolangma (Everest) and cooling history of the Yellow Band under the Qomolangma detachment

Abstract Newly discovered peloidal limestone from the summit of Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest) contains skeletal fragments of trilobites, ostracods and crinoids. They are small pebble-sized debris interbedded in micritic bedded limestone of the Qomolangma Formation, and are interpreted to have been derived from a bank margin and redeposited in peri-platform environments. An exposure of the Qomolangma detachment at the base of the first step (8520 m), on the northern slope of Mount Qomolangma was also found. Non-metamorphosed, strongly fractured Ordovician limestone is separated from underlying metamorphosed Yellow Band by a sharp fault with a breccia zone. The 40Ar,39Ar ages of muscovite from the Yellow Band show two-phase metamorphic events of approximately 33.3 and 24.5 Ma. The older age represents the peak of a Barrovian-type Eo-Himalayan metamorphic event and the younger age records a decompressional high-temperature Neo-Himalayan metamorphic event. A muscovite whole-rock 87Rb,86Sr isochron of the Yellow Band yielded 40.06 ± 0.81 Ma, which suggests a Pre-Himalayan metamorphism, probably caused by tectonic stacking of the Tibetan Tethys sediments in the leading margin of the Indian subcontinent. Zircon and apatite grains, separated from the Yellow Band, gave pooled fission-track ages of 14.4 ± 0.9 and 14.4 ± 1.4 Ma, respectively. These new chronologic data indicate rapid cooling of the hanging wall of the Qomolangma detachment from approximately 350°C to 130°C during a short period (15.5,14.4 Ma). [source]


Genetic and morphometric characterization of a local Vietnamese Swamp Buffalo population

Summary The water buffalo plays a key role in the socio-economy of South-East Asia as it is the main draught power for paddy rice cultivation. While in the Indian subcontinent the water buffalo is the riverine type, in South-East Asia the majority of buffaloes are of the swamp type. In the poor remote northern province of Ha Giang in Vietnam, improvement of the swamp buffalo breed may be one of the best ways to increase sustainability of farming systems. Therefore, analysis of the genetic structure of the province buffalo population is a prerequisite to any conservation or improvement project. A total of 1122 animals were described for 11 body and horn measurements for morphometric characterization. From this sample set, 744 animals were genotyped for 17 microsatellite markers. Also 17 animals from southern provinces of Vietnam were genotyped as a comparative sample. The results showed that genetic diversity as well as inbreeding value in the Ha Giang was high. The FST values within the province and across Vietnam were low indicating that most of the population variation is explained by individual variability. Bayesian clustering analysis did not highlight the presence of subdivided populations. These results are useful for the implementation of a conservation and improvement strategy of the swamp buffalo in order to guarantee the householders' needs for sustainability of the farming system in the Ha Giang province. Predicting General Well-Being From Emotional Intelligence and Three Broad Personality Traits

This paper examined the joint predictive effects of trait emotional intelligence (trait-EI), Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism on 2 facets of general well-being and job satisfaction. An employed community sample of 123 individuals from the Indian subcontinent participated in the study, and completed measures of the five-factor model of personality, trait-EI, job satisfaction, and general well-being facets worn-out and up-tight. Trait-EI was related but distinct from the 3 personality variables. Trait-EI demonstrated the strongest correlation with job satisfaction, but predicted general well-being no better than Neuroticism. In regression analyses, trait-EI predicted between 6% and 9% additional variance in the well-being criteria, beyond the 3 personality traits. It was concluded that trait-EI may be useful in examining dispositional influences on psychological well-being. [source]


Determining woodpecker diversity in the sub-Himalayan forests of northern India using call playbacks

ABSTRACT Tropical forests have exceptional woodpecker diversity, but little is known about the abundance and diversity of woodpeckers in the Indian subcontinent, particularly for the Shorea robusta -dominated moist deciduous forests of northern India. Our objective was to compare the number of woodpecker species and number of individuals detected using playback surveys and visual/aural transect surveys at five sites. Each site was surveyed 5,6 times along a 2000-m transect, with woodpeckers detected using two methods: (1) visual and aural cues, and (2) playing back calls of 13 species at 400-m intervals. Both methods involved similar effort per survey (100,110 min). During surveys, we detected 11 species of woodpeckers. More species and more than twice as many individuals were detected during playback surveys than during visual/aural surveys. In addition, species accumulation curves showed that we detected the species known to be present based on previous work faster with playback surveys than with visual/aural surveys at four of the five sites. During field trials, 97% of targeted individuals (N= 269) of 12 species responded to playback, and 83% of the responses occurred within 1 min of broadcast. The number of species of woodpeckers in our study area (11 species) was typical for a structurally diverse, tropical/subtropical moist broad-leaved forest. Our results demonstrate that playback surveys are more efficient and accurate than visual/aural surveys, and that playback surveys can be useful for assessing and monitoring woodpecker diversity in tropical forests. RESUMEN Los bosques tropicales tienen una diversidad excepcional de pájaros carpinteros, pero se conoce muy poco sobre la abundancia y diversidad de estas aves en la parte norte del sub-continente de la India, particularmente en el bosque deciduo húmedo dominado por Shorea robusta. Nuestro objetivo fue comparar el número de especies y de individuos de carpinteros utilizando grabaciones para censarlos y transectos visuales/auditivos en cinco lugares. Cada lugar fue censado 5,6 veces, cada 400m, a lo largo de un transecto de 2000 m, utilizando pistas visuales y auditivas y grabaciones de 13 especies. Ambos métodos incluyeron un esfuerzo similar por censo (100,110 minutos). Durante los censos, detectamos 11 especies de pájaros carpinteros. Una cantidad mayor de especies y más del doble de los individuos fueron detectados utilizando grabaciones que en los censos visuales/auditivos. Además, las curvas de acumulación de especies mostraron que detectamos las especies que sabíamos estaban presentes (basados en trabajos previos) de forma más rápida utilizando grabaciones que con el método visual/auditivo en cuatro de las cinco localidades. Durante las pruebas de campo el 97% (N= 269) de 12 especies respondieron a las grabaciones, y el 83% de las respuestas se obtuvieron un minuto después de exponerlos a la grabación. El número de especies de pájaros carpinteros en nuestra área de estudio (11) fue el típico para un bosque tropical/subtropical húmedo de hoja ancha y estructura diversificada. Nuestros resultados demuestran que los censos en donde se usan grabaciones son más eficientes y precisos que los censos visuales/auditivos. MOISTURE SORPTION ISOTHERM, PROPERTIES OF SORBED WATER AND HEAT OF SORPTION OF SANDESH, AN INDIAN MILK PRODUCT

ABSTRACT Moisture sorption isotherm of sandesh, one of the most popular milk products in India, was determined in terms of its moisture adsorption isotherms by gravimetrical method at 20 and 30C using various saturated salt solutions in the range of 11.2 to 97.2%. The isotherms obtained were of sigmoid shape and of the Brunauer,Emmett,Teller type. Out of three sorption models fitted to the experimental data, Caurie's model was found superior in interpreting the moisture adsorption characteristics of sandesh. The monolayer moisture content as calculated from the Caurie's model at 20 and 30C were 5.89% (dry basis [d.b.]) and 5.21% (d.b.), respectively. The values of isosteric heat of sorption as calculated from Clausius,Clapeyron equation was found to increase with decreasing moisture content at lower moisture content and approached the value of heat of vaporization of free water above 17.25% (d.b.). PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The present paper describes basically the storage stability of sandesh. The sandesh is a heat,acid coagulated product of milk in Indian subcontinent and forms the part and parcel of social life, ceremonies and festivals. It has an excellent market potential and higher profit margin compared with other milk products like table butter, cheese and milk powder. Although Indian dairy industry has made rapid strides in the last few decades, there is no proper packaging system, developed so far, for storage of sandesh. Keeping pace with the growing consumers' demand for fresh, convenient and microbiologically free foods, design of proper packaging system is the need of the hour. The data presented in the paper will be very much essential for the researchers and research and development institutions for proper designing of packaging system for sandesh. [source]


Autoimmune hepatitis in the Indian subcontinent: 7 years experience

Abstract Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is presumed to be rare in India. The present prospective study was carried out to determine the prevalence, clinical, biochemical and histological profile of patients with AIH in India. Methods: Consecutive patients with chronic liver disease suspected to be AIH, were screened for antinuclear antibodies (ANA), antismooth muscle antibodies (ASMA), antimitochondrial antibody (AMA), and anti-liver kidney microsomal antibodies (anti-LKM-1). Serum protein electrophoresis and liver biopsy were done. Autoimmune hepatitis was diagnosed according to the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group criteria. Results: Fifty of 1358 (3.43%) patients with chronic liver disease were diagnosed as autoimmune liver disease; 39 with AIH, two with overlap syndrome, five with primary sclerosing cholangitis, and four with primary biliary cirrhosis. Twenty-nine patients were categorized as definite AIH and 10 as probable AIH. Autoimmune hepatitis was common in females (males : females 1:3), with a mean age of 31 ± 17 years. Patients often presented with fatigue, jaundice and anorexia. Skin lesions (58%), joint symptoms (30%), and menstrual abnormalities (26%) were not uncommon. Mildly elevated alkaline phosphatase and hyper gamma globulinemia were seen in 78 and 91% patients, respectively. Eighty percent of patients were type I AIH, while 20% of cases remained unclassified. Histopathological changes included piecemeal necrosis (100%), plasma cell infiltration (91%), rosette formation (82%), and cirrhosis (76%). Overall mortality was 25% during a mean follow up of 15.7 ± 17.0 months. Conclusions: Our results clearly demonstrate that: (i) AIH is not uncommon in India; and (ii) while the profile and spectrum of AIH resembles that seen in the West, Indian patients present late, often in a cirrhotic state. Comparison of patch test results among white Europeans and patients from the Indian subcontinent living within the same community

Abstract Background, There are few studies comparing the incidence of allergic contact dermatitis among different racial groups living within the same community. Objectives, The objectives of this study were to compare white European patients with Fitzpatrick's skin phototypes (FSP) I to IV and patients from Indian, Pakistan and Bangladesh with FSP V living within the same community. Referral rates for patch testing, incidence of contact allergies and differences in contact allergens found were assessed. Method, All patients referred to the Contact Dermatitis Unit at Dewsbury and District Hospital between 2004 and 2006, inclusive, were included in the study. All patients were patch tested to the British Contact Dermatitis Society standard series, plus other series according to their clinical history, occupational history and clinical findings. Results, Four hundred and thirty-five consecutive patients from the patch testing clinic were included in the study. Fewer patients from the Indian subcontinent underwent patch testing (11.5%) than would have been expected for the size of the local population (18%). Fewer patients from the Indian subcontinent (44%) had one or more positive reactions compared with the white European patients (56%). No significant differences in the contact allergens responsible were detected between the two racial groups. Conclusion, There is a lower incidence of positive patch test results among patients with racial origins from the Indian subcontinent compared with white Europeans. This modest difference could be explained by a lower average age within the study population, and increased or differing exposure to contact allergens rather than demonstration of variability in the susceptibility to develop contact sensitivities following equal exposure. Six novel mutations including triple heterozygosity for Phe31Ser, 514delT and 516T,G factor X gene mutations are responsible for congenital factor X deficiency in patients of Nepali and Indian origin

Summary., Factor X (FX) deficiency is a rare (1 : 100000) autosomal recessive disorder caused by heterogeneous mutations in FX gene. We have studied the molecular basis this disease in six Indian and one Nepali patients. Diagnosis was confirmed by measuring the FX coagulant activity (FX: C) using a PT based assay. Six of them had a FX: C of < 1% and one patient had 24% coagulant activity. Mutations were identified in all the seven patients. These included eight (88.8%) missense and one frame-shift (11.2%) mutations of which six were novel. Three of the novel mutations, a Phe31Ser affecting ,Gla' domain and 514delT and 516T,G mutations affecting Cys132 in ,connecting region' were identified in a triple compound heterozygous state in a Nepali patient presenting with a severe phenotype. Two other novel mutations, Gly133Arg, may affect the disulphide bridge between Cys132-Cys302 in the connecting region while Gly223Arg may perturb the catalytic triad (His236, Asp282 and Ser379). The other novel mutation, Ser354Arg, involves the replacement of a small-buried residue by a large basic aminoacid and is likely to have steric or electrostatic effects in the pocket involving Lys351-Arg347-Lys414 that contributes to the core epitope of FXa for binding to FVa. Three previously reported mutations, Thr318Met; Gly323Ser; Gly366Ser were also identified. This is the first report of the molecular basis of FX deficiency in patients from the Indian subcontinent. Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever: A 10-Year Retrospective Study of 41 Cases in a Parisian Hospital

Background: Enteric fever remains a major cause of fever in travelers. We evaluated new trends in enteric fever. Methods: We reviewed the epidemiological, clinical, biological, bacteriological data, and outcome of all cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever seen in our department over the last decade. The inclusion criteria were the presence of signs compatible with enteric fever and isolation of Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi A, B, or C from blood or stool cultures or any other site. Results: Among the 41 patients, 38 (93%) had travel-associated enteric fever. The main geographic source of contamination was the Indian subcontinent. One patient had been vaccinated with parenteral Vi vaccine 1 year previously. Fever and headaches were the only signs which were present in more than 80% of patients. The Widal test at inclusion was positive in 27%, and a second serological test was found to be positive in 50% of evaluated cases. Blood cultures and stool cultures were positive in 34 cases and 10 cases, respectively. Salmonellae spp were isolated in both hemocultures and stool cultures in 4 cases and in urine in 1 case. Two strains of S. typhi were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. One strain of S. typhi and one of S. paratyphi B were nalidixic acid resistant. All evaluable patients were cured with the exception of 2 patients (1 failure, 1 relapse). We observed 3 toxic reactions. No patients died. Conclusion: The diagnosis and outcome of enteric fever are hampered by the lack of specificity of clinical and biological signs, the increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance, and the occurrence of toxic reactions during treatment. Distribution and conservation of the Gaur Bos gaurus in the Indian Subcontinent

ABSTRACT The Gaur Bos gaurus ranges from India to peninsular Malaysia. Its distribution, status and conservation in the Indian subcontinent are reviewed here on the basis of available information, both published papers and unpublished census reports of forest departments, and field survey data from north-eastern India and parts of Bhutan and Nepal. The Gaur is found in three disjunct regions, south-western India, central India and north-eastern India (including Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh). Within these regions the distribution is highly fragmented and includes a number of small non-viable isolated populations. The habitat in north-eastern India is still contiguous with that in Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh and to some extent with Nepal. Although the estimated population of the Gaur is 23 000,34 000, it is declining alarmingly. Populations outside the protected areas may not last long. An action plan has been proposed for its conservation. [source]


Indian-subcontinent NBIA: Unusual phenotypes, novel PANK2 mutations, and undetermined genetic forms ,

Abstract Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is etiologically, clinically, and by imaging a heterogeneous group including NBIA types 1 [pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN)] and 2 (PLA2G6 -associated neurodegeneration), neuroferritinopathy, and aceruloplasminaemia. Data on genetically defined Indian-subcontinent NBIA cases are limited. We report 6 patients from the Indian-subcontinent with a movement disorder and MRI basal ganglia iron deposition, compatible with diagnosis of an NBIA syndrome. All patients were screened for abnormalities in serum ceruloplasmin and ferritin levels and mutations in NBIA-associated genes [pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2), PLA2G6 and ferritin light chain (exon 4)]. We present clinical, imaging and genetic data correlating phenotype,genotype relations. Four patients carried PANK2 mutations, two of these were novel. The clinical phenotype was mainly dystonic with generalized dystonia and marked orobulbar features in the 4 adolescent-onset cases. One of the four had a late-onset (age 37) unilateral jerky postural tremor. His mutation, c.1379C>T, appears associated with a milder phenotype. Interestingly, he developed the eye-of-the-tiger sign only 10 years after onset. Two of the six presented with adult-onset levodopa (L -dopa)-responsive asymmetric re-emergent rest tremor, developing L -dopa-induced dyskinesias, and good benefit to deep brain stimulation (in one), thus resembling Parkinson's disease (PD). Both had an eye-of-the-tiger sign on MRI but were negative for known NBIA-associated genes, suggesting the existence of further genetic or sporadic forms of NBIA syndromes. In conclusion, genetically determined NBIA cases from the Indian subcontinent suggest presence of unusual phenotypes of PANK2 and novel mutations. The epidemiology of mouth cancer: a review of global incidence

Mouth cancer (143,145 ICD-9) is a major health problem in many parts of the world. While its incidence is relatively low in most western countries there are some important exceptions to this trend: on the Indian subcontinent and in other parts of Asia it remains one of the most common forms of cancer. This review article summarises the global incidence of mouth cancer using cancer mapS. Data have been compiled from the latest edition of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents and recent studies from various locations around the world. Significant geographic variation is noted in the incidence of mouth cancer, with high rates reported for the Indian subcontinent and parts of Asia (male incidence rates in excess of 10 per 100 000 per annum). It is also noted that as with other forms of oral cancer, the majority of population-based data for mouth cancer comes from the Western world with a paucity of reliable data from the so-called developing countrieS. Mouth cancer remains a serious health problem in many parts of the world with many regions reporting increasing incidence rates particularly in maleS. Ongoing research into the aetiologic risk factors associated with this disease must remain a very high priority if the causes of mouth cancer are to be established and disease control protocols introduced widely. A NEW SPECIES OF DICERORHINUS (RHINOCEROTIDAE) FROM THE PLIO-PLEISTOCENE OF MYANMAR

Abstract:, A skull and mandible of the new species Dicerorhinus gwebinensis sp. nov. of Rhinocerotidae (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) is described. The material is collected from the upper part of the Irrawaddy sediments (Plio-Pleistocene) in central Myanmar. D. gwebinensis sp. nov. is morphologically more similar to the extant species D. sumatrensis (Sumatran rhinoceros) than to other species of the genus but differs from D. sumatrensis in having the comparatively shorter nasal, the more concave dorsal profile of the skull, the more elevated occiput and presence of molar crista in M3/. This is the first discovery of Dicerorhinus in the upper Miocene to lower Pleistocene of the Indian subcontinent and Mainland Southeast Asia, and fills the chronological and geographical gap of this lineage in Asia. The Dicerorhinus clade probably migrated into Southeast Asia from East Asia by the Pliocene or early Pleistocene. This hypothesis is supported by the scarcity or absence of this clade in the Neogene mammalian fauna of the Indian Subcontinent. [source]


Cystic fibrosis in India,

Abstract Cystic fibrosis (CF) was considered to be non-existent in Indian subcontinent. Reports in last one decade have suggested that cystic fibrosis occurs in India but its precise magnitude is not known. Studies on migrant Indian population in United States and United Kingdom estimate frequency of CF as 1:10,000 to 1:40,000. The clinical features are similar to that reported in Caucasian population. CF in Indian children is usually diagnosed late and in advanced stage. Children are more malnourished and may have clinically evident deficiency of fat soluble vitamins. The frequency of clubbing, colonization with Pseudomonas, and laboratory evidence of pseudo-Bartter syndrome is relatively more at the time of diagnosis. Diagnostic facilities in form of sweat chloride estimation and genetic studies are not available readily. Mutation profile is different. The frequency of common mutation F508del in Indian children is between 19% and 34%. Other mutations are heterogeneous. Management of CF in India is difficult due to less number of trained manpower, limited availability, and high cost of pharmacologic agents. The determinants of early death include: severe malnutrition and colonization with Pseudomonas at the time of diagnosis, more than four episodes of lower respiratory infection per year and age of onset of symptoms before 2 months of age. To conclude, CF does occur in India; however, precise magnitude of problem is not known. There is need to create awareness amongst pediatricians, developing diagnostic facilities, and management protocols based on locally available resources. Molecular genetic perspectives on the Indian social structure

In the process of understanding the dynamics and sociocultural complexity of Indian society, anthropologists have come up with a number of hypotheses involving certain social/cultural processes that may modulate evolutionary processes. Autosomal microsatellite variability of the Arrernte people of Australia

The genomic diversity of the Arrernte people of Australia or caterpillar people was investigated utilizing 13 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers. Significant departures from Hardy,Weinberg equilibrium were detected at the D18S51, TPOX and CSF1PO loci, which persisted after applying the Bonferroni correction. Gene diversity values oscillate between 0.6302 (CSF1PO) and 0.8731 (D21S11). Observed heterozygosity (Ho) ranges from 0.2632 (D18S51) to 0.8333 (vWA) and is lower than the expected heterozygosity (He) for 12 of the 13 loci analyzed. The genetic relationships of the Arrernte with Middle Eastern, East Asian, South Asian and Indian populations were analyzed by distance-based methods, including Neighbor-Joining trees and nonmetric multidimensional scaling. In addition, the genetic contribution of the populations included in the analysis to the Arrernte gene pool was estimated utilizing weighted least square coefficients. Although the Arrernte population exhibits a remarkable level of genetic differentiation, results of the phylogeographic analyses based on autosomal microsatellite data suggest a certain degree of genetic relatedness between the Arrernte tribe of Australia and populations from the Indian subcontinent. Introduction of a Nuclear Marker for Phylogenetic Analysis of Nepenthaceae

Abstract: Nepenthaceae, the pitcher plants of the Old World tropics show a remarkable diversity in SE Asia, especially on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. This region is considered as a secondary center of diversity. Sequence analysis of the cpDNA trnK intron supports this hypothesis showing the species of the Malay Archipelago as neighbour group to the isolated species from Sri Lanka, the Seychelles, and Madagascar. Based on phylogenetic reconstructions an origin of recent Nepenthaceae in the Indian subcontinent is assumed. A recent investigation focused on a non-plastid, translocated copy of the trnK intron has revealed an incongruence to tree topology based on the cpDNA trnK intron. Although the translocated copy emerged as insufficient for phylogenetic reconstruction of Nepenthaceae some taxa showed, contrary to the cpDNA dataset, relatively high distances to the rest of the taxa. These results indicated that the phylogeny of the trnK intron could not reflect true phylogenetic relationships. We investigated the peptide transferase 1 (PTR1), to develop a phylogenetic marker that is based on a nuclear low copy gene in Nepenthes. All sequences obtained were probably functional, indicated by the ratio of point mutations of the single codon positions in exon and intron regions. Comparative analysis showed that this locus is of similar variability as the cpDNA trnK intron and, contrary to the translocated copy of trnK, potential useful for phylogenetic reconstruction. While in parts congruent to the plastid trnK intron phylogeny, a higher divergence of some sequences in PRT1 and in the previously reported, non cpDNA dataset indicates that remnants of an older species stock persisted east of Wallace's line and on the Sunda Shelf. This suggests that plastid haplotypes existing today in the main distribution center of the Nepenthaceae could be descendants of more recently dispersed lineages that had been transmitted to an old species stock.
