Selected AbstractsStubborn Reliance on Intuition and Subjectivity in Employee SelectionINDUSTRIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 3 2008SCOTT HIGHHOUSE The focus of this article is on implicit beliefs that inhibit adoption of selection decision aids (e.g., paper-and-pencil tests, structured interviews, mechanical combination of predictors). Understanding these beliefs is just as important as understanding organizational constraints to the adoption of selection technologies and may be more useful for informing the design of successful interventions. One of these is the implicit belief that it is theoretically possible to achieve near-perfect precision in predicting performance on the job. That is, people have an inherent resistance to analytical approaches to selection because they fail to view selection as probabilistic and subject to error. Another is the implicit belief that prediction of human behavior is improved through experience. This myth of expertise results in an overreliance on intuition and a reluctance to undermine one's own credibility by using a selection decision aid. [source] Phenols in spikelets and leaves of field-grown oats (Avena sativa) with different inherent resistance to crown rust (Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae)JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 11 2009Lena H Dimberg Abstract BACKGROUND: Avenanthramides, health-beneficial phenols in oats, are produced in response to incompatible races of the crown rust fungus, Puccinia coronata, in seedlings of greenhouse-grown oats. This study aimed to elucidate whether avenanthramides and/or other phenolic compounds, together with the activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), phenoloxidase (PO) and the avenanthramide biosynthetic enzyme hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:hydroxyanthranilate- N -hydroxycinnamoyl transferase (HHT), are associated with crown rust infection in mature field-grown oats. Nine oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes with wide variation in crown rust resistance were exposed to naturally occurring fungal spores during the growth period. RESULTS: In the spikelets avenanthramides as well as HHT activities were more abundant in the crown rust resistant genotypes, whereas p -coumaric and caffeic acids were more abundant in the susceptible ones. In the leaves avenanthramides were not associated with resistance. Instead two unknown compounds correlated negatively with the rust score. Phenols released by alkaline hydrolysis and PAL and PO activities were not related to rust infection, either in spikelets or in the leaves. CONCLUSION: Because grains of crown rust-resistant oat genotypes seemed to have higher endogenous levels of health-promoting avenanthramides, use of resistant oats may contribute to a food raw material with health-beneficial effects. Kather Background: The nitroimidazole, ronidazole, has been demonstrated to have in vitro and in vivo activity against the protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus in cats. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of feline T foetus isolates obtained from naturally infected cats to 5 antimicrobial agents and to compare the in vitro time kill of ronidazole and metronidazole. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that nitroimidazoles have in vitro activity against T foetus, whereas furazolidone, omeprazole, and paromomycin do not. Animals: Fecal specimens were cultured from 4 naturally infected Bengal cats with a history of T foetus -associated diarrhea. Methods: A 24-hour susceptibility assay was performed on all 4 isolates for the 5 antimicrobial agents. A time-kill microdilution method was performed on 2 isolates for metronidazole and ronidazole. Results: Paromomycin and omeprazole showed no in vitro effect at concentrations ±80 ,g/mL. There was no significant difference in 24-hour susceptibilities among metronidazole, ronidazole, and furazolidone. In addition, only the results of the highest concentration tested (80 ,g/mL) and concentrations of 1.25 and 2.5 ,g/mL revealed significant differences in the rate of trophozoite killing, with ronidazole having a faster reduction in trophozoite survival. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Time-kill assays demonstrated ronidazole had a higher lethal activity compared with metronidazole. These findings contrast with a previously published report and may reflect strain variation, different methodologies, or both. The lack of clinical response seen with metronidazole administration to treat feline trichomoniasis may not reflect inherent resistance but rather in vivo events involving drug distribution and pharmacokinetics. [source] Memory T-Cell Predominance Following T-Cell Depletional Therapy Derives from Homeostatic Expansion of Naive T CellsAMERICAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 11 2009A. Sener T-cell depletion reportedly leads to alterations in the T-cell compartment with predominant survival of memory phenotype CD4 T cells. Here, we asked whether the prevalence of memory T cells postdepletion results from their inherent resistance to depletion and/or to the homeostatic expansion of naive T cells and their phenotypic conversion to memory, which is known to occur in lymphopenic conditions. Using a ,mosaic memory' mouse model with trackable populations of alloreactive memory T cells, we found that treatment with murine antithymocyte globulin (mATG) or antilymphocyte serum (ALS) effectively depleted alloreactive memory CD4 T cells, followed by rapid homeostatic proliferation of endogenous CD4 T cells peaking at 4 days postdepletion, with no homeostatic advantage to the antigen-specific memory population. Interestingly, naive (CD44lo) CD4 T cells exhibited the greatest increase in homeostatic proliferation following mATG treatment, divided more extensively compared to memory (CD44hi) CD4 T cells and converted to a memory phenotype. Our results provide novel evidence that memory CD4 T cells are susceptible to lymphodepletion and that the postdepletional T-cell compartment is repopulated to a significant extent by homeostatically expanded naive T cells in a mouse model, with important important implications for immune alterations triggered by induction therapy. [source] Filling hollowed out spaces with localised meanings, practices and hope: Progressive neoliberal spaces in Te RarawaASIA PACIFIC VIEWPOINT, Issue 2 2009Nick Lewis Abstract The contracting out to private providers of services previously delivered within the state has been framed critically as ,hollowing out' and read for its erosion of social democracy, social justice and welfare, as well as its inefficiencies in practice. It is commonly dismissed as neoliberalism. In this paper, we highlight the gains made through this new contractualism by Te Oranga, the Family, Health and Education division of Te Runanga o Te Rarawa located in the Far North of New Zealand. Our aim is not to narrate the exceptional, but to point to the inherent resistances to totalising projects residing in agency and place. Placed at the service of a deep sense of community being and community good rather than self-interest, delivery contracts have enabled Te Oranga to pursue an alternative form of local development and craft a set of progressive spaces. Although highly contingent upon powerful Maori political projects, we argue that the case suggests that gains may be sought in other settings, albeit partial, temporary, and politically contingent. We thus offer a more nuanced account of neoliberalism by highlighting its agency, fractures, politics, and contradictions, and by demonstrating that actualised neoliberalisms are co-constituted with other political projects.
