Selected AbstractsStandardising and mapping open-source information for crisis regions: the case of post-conflict IraqDISASTERS, Issue 3 2005Sarah Mubareka Abstract Painting an accurate picture of the situation on the ground in countries in crisis is vital for the efficiency of humanitarian aid and reconstruction agencies. This study describes a method for standardising and mapping the plethora of open-source information. The test site for the study is post-conflict Iraq. Important information on aid distribution, reconstruction and security in Iraq can be derived from the reports of humanitarian aid agencies and the media, before being formatted, inserted into a database and mapped. The product is a visual, cartographic structure of otherwise random information, showing which organisations are working in the country, which thematic and geographic areas are being prioritised in the field, and which areas most frequently experience security events. This type of mapping not only highlights the overall working environment within different parts of the country, but it may also serve as a decision-making tool for donors and humanitarian aid agencies planning to deploy personnel. [source] Bayes' Theorem to estimate population prevalence from Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scoresADDICTION, Issue 7 2009David R. Foxcroft ABSTRACT Aim The aim in this methodological paper is to demonstrate, using Bayes' Theorem, an approach to estimating the difference in prevalence of a disorder in two groups whose test scores are obtained, illustrated with data from a college student trial where 12-month outcomes are reported for the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Method Using known population prevalence as a background probability and diagnostic accuracy information for the AUDIT scale, we calculated the post-test probability of alcohol abuse or dependence for study participants. The difference in post-test probability between the study intervention and control groups indicates the effectiveness of the intervention to reduce alcohol use disorder rates. Findings In the illustrative analysis, at 12-month follow-up there was a mean AUDIT score difference of 2.2 points between the intervention and control groups: an effect size of unclear policy relevance. Using Bayes' Theorem, the post-test probability mean difference between the two groups was 9% (95% confidence interval 3,14%). Interpreted as a prevalence reduction, this is evaluated more easily by policy makers and clinicians. Conclusion Important information on the probable differences in real world prevalence and impact of prevention and treatment programmes can be produced by applying Bayes' Theorem to studies where diagnostic outcome measures are used. However, the usefulness of this approach relies upon good information on the accuracy of such diagnostic measures for target conditions. [source] Performance characteristics and modelling of a micro gas turbine for their integration with thermally activated cooling technologiesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 2 2007Adrián Vidal Abstract We have developed a simple model of a micro gas turbine system operating at high ambient temperatures and characterized its performance with a view to integrating this system with thermally activated cooling technologies. To develop and validate this model, we used experimental data from the micro gas turbine test facility of the CREVER research centre. The microturbine components were modelled and the thermodynamic properties of air and combustion gases were estimated using a commercial process simulator. Important information such as net output power, microturbine fuel consumption and exhaust gas mass flow rate can be obtained with the empirical correlations we have developed in this study. Badawi Residual stresses influence most physical properties of thin films and are closely related to their microstructure. Among the most widely used methods, X-ray diffraction is the only one allowing the determination of both the mechanical and microstructural state of each diffracting phase. Diffracting planes are used as a strain gauge to measure elastic strains in one or several directions of the diffraction vector. Important information on the thin-film microstructure may also be extracted from the width of the diffraction peaks: in particular, the deconvolution of these peaks allows values of coherently diffracting domain size and microdistortions to be obtained. The genesis of residual stresses in thin films results from multiple mechanisms. Stresses may be divided into three major types: epitaxic stresses, thermal stresses and intrinsic stresses. Diffraction methods require the knowledge of the thin-film elastic constants, which may differ from the bulk-material values as a result of the particular microstructure. Combining an X-ray diffractometer with a tensile tester, it is possible to determine X-ray elastic constants of each diffracting phase in a thin-film/substrate system, in particular the Poisson ratio and the Young modulus. It is important to notice that numerous difficulties relative to the application of diffraction methods may arise in the case of thin films. [source] Hydrodynamic considerations on optimal design of a three-phase airlift bioreactor with high solids loadingJOURNAL OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY & BIOTECHNOLOGY, Issue 9 2003Jaroslav Klein Abstract The hydrodynamic study of a three-phase airlift (TPAL) bioreactor with an enlarged gas,liquid dual separator was carried out. Different lengths and diameters of the draft tube were tested to show how the design of the separator zone affects the hydrodynamic performance of the TPAL reactor. Ca-alginate beads with entrapped yeast biomass at different loadings (0, 7, 14 and 21% v/v) were used in order to mimic the solid phase of conventional high cell density systems, such as those with cells immobilized on carriers or flocculating cells. Important information on multiphase flow and distribution of gas and solid phases in the internal-loop airlift reactor (ALR) with high solids loading was obtained, which can be used for suggesting optimal hydrodynamic conditions in a TPAL bioreactor with high solids loading. It is finally suggested that the ALR with a dual separator and a downcomer to riser cross-sectional area ratio (AD/AR) ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 can be successfully applied to batch/continuous high cell density systems, where the uniform distribution of solid phase, its efficient separation of particles from the liquid phase, and an improved residence time of air bubbles inside the reactor are desirable. Important information about the density of colour centres in LiF, which depends on , -irradiation doses, impurities and temperatures, has been obtained for small crystal contents of oxygen, hydroxyl and metal ions. A comparison of annealing parameters of the LiF crystals subjected to different doses of irradiation, but to the same thermal bleaching procedures, has been performed and the results are critically discussed. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Hydrogen/deuterium exchange on protein solutions containing nucleic acids: utility of protamine sulfateRAPID COMMUNICATIONS IN MASS SPECTROMETRY, Issue 16 2008Anton Poliakov Obtaining global hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange data on proteins is an important first step in amide proton exchange experiments. Important information such as the mode of exchange, the cooperativity of folding/unfolding reactions, and the effects of ligand binding can be readily obtained in global exchange experiments. Many interesting biological systems are complexes containing both proteins and nucleic acids. The low pH conditions required to quench H/D exchange reactions result in the formation of stable protein/nucleic acid precipitates which interfere with the liquid chromatography step of the experiment and preclude obtaining mass spectrometric data. In this work we show that the precipitation of proteins and nucleic acids is electrostatic in nature and can be prevented by high ionic strength and by removing nucleic acids by protamine sulfate. [source] The Influence of Charge Transport and Recombination on the Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar CellsCHEMPHYSCHEM, Issue 1 2009Mingkui Wang Dr. Abstract Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient voltage decay measurements are applied to compare the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using organic electrolytes, ionic liquids and organic-hole conductors as hole transport materials (HTM). Nano-crystalline titania films sensitized by the same heteroleptic ruthenium complex NaRu(4-carboxylic acid-4,-carboxylate) (4,4,-dinonyl-2,2,-bipyridyl)(NCS)2,, coded Z-907Na are employed as working electrodes. The influence of the nature of the HTM on the photovoltaic figures of merit, that is, the open circuit voltage, short circuit photocurrent and fill factor is evaluated. In order to derive the electron lifetime, as well as the electron diffusion coefficient and charge collection efficiency, EIS measurements are performed in the dark and under illumination corresponding to realistic photovoltaic operating conditions of these mesoscopic solar cells. A theoretical model is established to interpret the frequency response off the impedance under open circuit conditions, which is conceptually similar to photovoltage transient decay measurements. Important information on factors that govern the dynamics of electron transport within the nanocrystalline TiO2 film and charge recombination across the dye sensitized heterojunction is obtained. [source] The effect of substituents on the aggregation and gelation of azo sulphonate dyesCOLORATION TECHNOLOGY, Issue 3 2005Kunihiro Hamada The aggregation and gelation of sodium 1-phenylazo-2-hydroxy-6-naphthalene sulphonate azo dyes containing fluoro, ethyl, n -propyl, iso -propyl, n -butyl, sec -butyl and tert -butyl groups in the para -position to the azo group have been compared with those containing methyl and trifluoromethyl groups. The behaviour of dyes containing a fluoro group was also studied using 19F NMR spectroscopy. Aqueous solutions of sodium 1-(4- sec -butylphenylazo)-2-hydroxy-6-naphthalene sulphonate at concentrations greater than 0.01 mol dm,3 became gelatinous, whereas the other dyes containing alkyl groups did not show this effect. Although the gelation of aqueous dye solutions of fluorinated dyes has been reported previously, it had not been noticed with dyes containing hydrocarbon chains. Aggregation constants have been determined, and the thermodynamic parameters found to be influenced by chain branching and by the number of carbon atoms present. Important information has been established about the spatial arrangement of fluorine in the aromatic ring. [source] PUBLIC PREFERENCES FOR REHABILITATION VERSUS INCARCERATION OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS: EVIDENCE FROM A CONTINGENT VALUATION SURVEY,CRIMINOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY, Issue 4 2006DANIEL S. NAGIN Research Summary: Accurately gauging the public's support for alternative responses to juvenile offending is important, because policy makers often justify expenditures for punitive juvenile justice reforms on the basis of popular demand for tougher policies. In this study, we assess public support for both punitively and nonpunitively oriented juvenile justice policies by measuring respondents' willingness to pay for various policy proposals. We employ a methodology known as "contingent valuation" (CV) that permits the comparison of respondents' willingness to pay (WTP) for competing policy alternatives. Specifically, we compare CV-based estimates for the public's WTP for two distinctively different responses to serious juvenile crime: incarceration and rehabilitation. An additional focus of our analysis is an examination of the public's WTP for an early childhood prevention program. The analysis indicates that the public is at least as willing to pay for rehabilitation as punishment for juvenile offenders and that WTP for early childhood prevention is also substantial. Implications and future research directions are outlined. Policy Implications: The findings suggest that lawmakers should more actively consider policies grounded in rehabilitation, and, perhaps, be slower to advocate for punitive reforms in response to public concern over high-profile juvenile crimes. Additionally, our willingness to pay findings offer encouragement to lawmakers who are uncomfortable with the recent trend toward punitive juvenile justice policies and would like to initiate more moderate reforms. Such lawmakers may be reassured that the public response to such initiatives will not be hostile. Just as importantly, reforms that emphasize leniency and rehabilitation can be justified economically as welfare-enhancing expenditures of public funds. The evidence that the public values rehabilitation more than increased incarceration should be important information to cost-conscious legislators considering how to allocate public funds. Cost-conscious legislatures may become disenchanted with punitive juvenile justice policies on economic grounds and pursue policies that place greater emphasis on rehabilitation. They may be reassured, on the basis of our findings, that the public will support this move. Behr Abstract CuO single crystals have been grown from the melt by a floating zone method with optical heating at elevated oxygen pressures 3.5 to 5.5 MPa and growth rates as high as 10 mm/h. Melting experiments and recalculated Cu-O phase diagram data show that CuO melts incongruently. The melting temperature increases and the concentration difference between the melt and the CuO phase decreases for rising oxygen partial pressure. Accordingly, increasing the oxygen partial pressure improves the growth process by reducing both the significant oxygen loss during melting as well as the composition difference at the growth interface. Wright B.A. Abstract In an effort to confirm the factorial validity of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) across sex, the items from the CTQ for 916 university students were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicated that the factor structure for the CTQ was significantly different for men and women. For women, the items from the Physical Abuse subscale did not create a stable factor and thus appear not to be conceptually valid. Conversely, for men, the five-factor model provided a relatively good fit to the data. This investigation provides important information regarding sex differences in the factorial validity of the CTQ. Implications and future research directions are discussed. A concerted effort among evolutionary and developmental biologists, human geneticists, and tissue engineers has revealed important information on the molecular mechanisms that are crucial for the patterning and formation of craniofacial structures. Here, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of evo,devo as it relates to craniofacial morphogenesis, fate determination of cranial neural crest cells, and specific signaling pathways in regulating tissue,tissue interactions during patterning of craniofacial apparatus and the morphogenesis of tooth, mandible, and palate. [source] The Brøset violence checklist (BVC)ACTA PSYCHIATRICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 2002Phil Woods Objective:, The Brøset violence checklist (BVC) is a short-term violence prediction instrument assessing confusion, irritability, boisterousness, verbal threats, physical threats and attacks on objects as either present or absent. The aim of this paper is to describe the evolution and usefulness of the BVC. Method:, This paper reviews studies on the BVC and discusses implications for further research. Results:, Empirical research has shown that it has moderate sensitivity and high specificity with an adequate inter-rater reliability. Conclusion:, The BVC is a useful instrument for predicting inpatient violence within the next 24-h period. The psychometric properties of the instrument are satisfactory. Results from ongoing studies will give important information on cultural differences, the validity of the BVC in less well staffed wards, the clinical use of the checklist and its ability to predict violence throughout all the hospital stay. [source] Suspended sediment load estimation and the problem of inadequate data sampling: a fractal viewEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 4 2006Bellie Sivakumar Abstract Suspended sediment load estimation at high resolutions is an extremely difficult task, because: (1) it depends on the availability of high-resolution water discharge and suspended sediment concentration measurements, which are often not available; (2) any errors in the measurements of these two components could significantly influence the accuracy of suspended sediment load estimation; and (3) direct measurements are very expensive. The purpose of this study is to approach this sampling problem from a new perspective of fractals (or scaling), which could provide important information on the transformation of suspended sediment load data from one scale to another. This is done by investigating the possible presence of fractal behaviour in the daily suspended sediment load data for the Mississippi River basin (at St. Louis, Missouri). The presence of fractal behaviour is investigated using five different methods, ranging from general to specific and from mono-fractal to multi-fractal: (1) autocorrelation function; (2) power spectrum; (3) probability distribution function; (4) box dimension; and (5) statistical moment scaling function. The results indicate the presence of multi-fractal behaviour in the suspended sediment load data, suggesting the possibility of transformation of data from one scale to another using a multi-dimensional model. [source] Growth and mortality of prairie stream fishes: relations with fish community and instream habitat characteristicsECOLOGY OF FRESHWATER FISH, Issue 2 2001M. C. Quist Abstract , Few studies have been conducted to describe the age structure, growth rates and mortality of fishes in small stream ecosystems. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine age structure, growth rates and mortality (i.e., total annual mortality and, age-specific mortality) of central stonerollers Campostoma anomalum, creek chubs Semotilus atromaculatus, red shiners Cyprinella lutrensis and green sunfish Lepomis cyanellus from 13 streams on Fort Riley Military Reservation, Kansas, using incremental growth analysis. Further, we were interested in determining the influence of fish community and instream habitat characteristics on growth rates. The age structure of central stonerollers, creek chubs, and red shiners was dominated by young individuals (i.e., less than age 2); however, over 60% of the green sunfish were age 2 to age 4. Mean total annual mortality was >60% for cyprinids and averaged approximately 44% for green sunfish. The age-specific mortality of central stonerollers and red shiners was generally less than 45% between age 0 and 1 and increased to over 85% for fishes greater than age 1. Fish community characteristics (e.g., catch per unit effort of trophic guilds) and chemical habitat (e.g., total phosphorous) were not related to growth rates (P>0.05). Growth of central stonerollers was not significantly correlated with physical habitat (P>0.05). However, the growth increments of creek chubs, red shiners, and green sunfish were related to the amount of woody debris (e.g., total woody debris, log complex habitat; r>0.60; P,0.05). The results of this study provide important information on the population dynamic rate functions of cyprinid and green sunfish populations in small prairie streams. Furthermore, these data suggest that woody debris is important habitat influencing growth of stream fishes., [source] Localizing and Lateralizing Value of Behavioral Change in Childhood Partial SeizuresEPILEPSIA, Issue 1 2007András Fogarasi Summary:,Objective: To describe clinical characteristics as well as localizing and lateralizing value of behavioral change (BC) at the onset of childhood seizures. Methods: Five hundred forty-one videotaped seizures of 109 consecutive patients ,12 years with partial epilepsy and postoperatively seizure-free outcome were analyzed. Behavioral change (the first clinical feature of a certain seizure with a sudden change in the child's behavior) was evaluated by two independent investigators. Results: Thirty-three (30%) patients showed BC at least once during their seizures. Behavioral changes appeared in arrestive form in 19 and with affective activities in 18 children; four patients produced both kinds of BCs, separately. Arrest-type BC happened in 16 of 50 children with right- and 3 of 59 patients with left-sided seizure onset zone (p < 0.001). Affective-type BC was observed in 17 of 67 temporal lobe epilepsy patients while it happened in only 1 of 42 children with extratemporal lobe epilepsy (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Arrest-type BC lateralizes to the right hemisphere, while affective-type BC localizes to the temporal lobe in childhood partial seizures. Type of BCs can add important information to the presurgical evaluation of young children with refractory partial epilepsy. [source] The recent breakthroughs in the understanding of host genomics in hepatitis CEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION, Issue 10 2010Andri Rauch Eur J Clin Invest 2010; 40 (10): 950,959 Abstract Background, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is spontaneously resolved in about 30% of acutely infected individuals. In those who progress to chronic hepatitis C, HCV therapy permanently eradicates infection in about 40% of cases. It has long been suspected that host genetic factors are key determinants for the control of HCV infection. Design, We will review in this study four genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and two large candidate gene studies that assessed the role of host genetic variation for the natural and treatment-induced control of HCV infection. Results, The studies consistently identified genetic variation in interleukin 28B (IL28B) as the strongest predictor for the control of HCV infection. Importantly, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL28B strongly predicted both spontaneous and treatment-induced HCV recovery. IL28B is located on chromosome 19 and encodes interferon-,, a type III interferon with antiviral activity, which is mediated through the JAK-STAT pathway by inducing interferon-stimulated genes. The SNPs identified in the GWAS are in high linkage disequilibrium with coding or functional non-coding SNPs that might modulate function and/or expression of IL28B. The role of the different IL28B alleles on gene expression and cytokine function has not yet been established. Conclusions, These findings provide strong genetic evidence for the influence of interferon-, for both the natural and treatment-induced control of HCV infection, and support the further investigation of interferon-, for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Furthermore, genetic testing before HCV therapy could provide important information towards an individualized HCV treatment. [source] Redefining epithelial progenitor potential in the developing thymusEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY, Issue 9 2007Simona Abstract Cortical and medullary epithelium represent specialised cell types that play key roles in thymocyte development, including positive and negative selection of the T cell repertoire. While recent evidence shows that these epithelial lineages share a common embryonic origin, the phenotype and possible persistence of such progenitor cells in the thymus at later stages of development remain controversial. Through use of a panel of reagents including the putative progenitor marker Mts24, we set out to redefine the stages in the development of thymic epithelium. In the early embryonic day (E)12 thymus anlagen we find that almost all epithelial cells are uniformly positive for Mts24 expression. In addition, while the thymus at later stages of development was found to contain distinct Mts24+ and Mts24, epithelial subsets, thymus grafting experiments show that both Mts24+ and Mts24, epithelial subsets share the ability to form organised cortical and medullary thymic microenvironments that support T cell development, a function shown previously to be lost in the Mts24, cells by E15 when lower cell doses were used. Our data help to clarify stages in thymic epithelial development and provide important information in relation to currently used markers of epithelial progenitors. New quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) approaches with increased sensitivity to subtle normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and grey matter changes and increased specificity to the heterogeneous pathological substrates of MS may give information complementary to conventional MRI. Magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have the potential to provide important information on the structural changes occurring within and outside T2-visible lesions. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) adds information on the biochemical nature of such changes. Functional MRI might quantify the efficiency of brain plasticity in response to MS injury and improve our understanding of the link between structural damage and clinical manifestations. The present review summarizes how the application of these MR techniques to the study of MS is dramatically changing our understanding of how MS causes irreversible neurological deficits. [source] The Precipitation Behavior of Superalloy ATI Allvac 718PlusADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS, Issue 3 2010Gerald A. Zickler Abstract ATI Allvac 718Plus is a novel nickel-based superalloy, which was designed for heavy-duty applications in aerospace gas turbines. The precipitation kinetics of the intermetallic , (Ni3Nb) and ,, (Ni3(Al,Ti)) phases in this alloy are of scientific as well as technological interest because of their significant influence on the mechanical properties. Important parameters like grain size are controlled by coarse , precipitates located at grain boundaries, whereas small ,, precipitates are responsible for strengthening by precipitation hardening. In the present study, the microstructure is investigated by three-dimensional atom probe tomography and simulated by computer modeling using the thermo-kinetic software MatCalc. The results of numerical simulations and experimental data are compared and critically discussed. It is shown that the chemical compositions of the phases change during isothermal aging, and the precipitation kinetics of , and ,, phases interact with each other as shown in a time temperature precipitation (TTP) plot. The TTP plot shows C-shaped curves with characteristic discontinuities in the temperature range, where simultaneous and concurrent precipitation of the , and ,, phases occurs. This leads to a competition in the diffusion of Nb and Al, which are partly present in both phases. Thus, the present study gives important information on heat treatments for ATI Allvac 718Plus in order to achieve the desired microstructure and mechanical properties. Failure criteria were formulated using the conventional Palmgren-Miner rule (S-N curve approach) and the fracture mechanics (F-M) principle. The dynamic analysis of double hinged articulated tower under wind and waves is carried out in time domain. The response histories of hinge shear stresses are employed for the reliability analysis. Advanced first-order reliability method and Monte Carlo simulation method were used to estimate the reliability. Various parametric studies were carried out, which yield important information for the reliability based design. The S-N curve approach yields a significantly conservative estimate of probability of failure when compared to the F-M approach. [source] Bioavailability of backbone cyclic PK/PBAN neuropeptide antagonists , inhibition of sex pheromone biosynthesis elicited by the natural mechanism in Heliothis peltigera femalesFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 4 2010Aliza Hariton The bioavailability (i.e. ability to penetrate the insect cuticle, to reach the target organ and to exert bioactivity) of two backbone cyclic (BBC) pyrokinin/pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide (PK/PBAN) antagonistic peptides was tested by applying them topically to Heliothis peltigera females and monitoring the resulting inhibition of sex pheromone production elicited by the natural (endogenous) mechanism during scotophase. Peptides were applied at various time points before the onset of scotophase, in aqueous or organic solvents, and pheromone content was examined at the 5th or 6th hour of scotophase. Both peptides penetrated the cuticle very efficiently and inhibited sex pheromone biosynthesis elicited by the natural mechanism for up to 8 or 9 h after application. The degree of inhibition differed between solvents: those applied in double-distilled water (DDW) were more active than those applied in dimethylsulfoxide (inhibition by 53,73% and 15,38%, respectively, for BBC-25, and 46,67% and 36,40%, respectively for BBC-28). Peptides applied in dimethylsulfoxide and hexane exhibited slightly more persistent inhibitory activity than those applied in DDW. The solvents themselves did not affect sex pheromone production. Multiple applications (at ,2, 0, +2 and +4 h) resulted in almost complete (87%) inhibition of sex pheromone biosynthesis, compared with 52% inhibition following a single application. The present study is the first demonstration of the ability of topically applied PK/PBAN antagonists to inhibit sex pheromone biosynthesis elicited by the natural mechanism in female moths, and provides important information on the bioavailability of BBC peptides and the mechanism responsible for sex pheromone production in these insects. [source] Gene expression profiling of the pH response in Shigella flexneri 2aFEMS MICROBIOLOGY LETTERS, Issue 1 2007Fan Cheng Abstract The pH response of Shigella flexneri 2a 301 was identified by gene expression profiling. Gene expression profiles of cells grown in pH 4.5 or 8.6 were compared with the profiles of cells grown at pH 7.0. Differential expression was observed for 307 genes: 97 were acid up-regulated, 102 were acid down-regulated, 91 were base up-regulated, and 86 were base down-regulated. Twenty-seven genes were found to be both acid and base up-regulated, and 29 genes were both acid and base down-regulated. This study showed that (1) the most pH-dependent genes regulate energy metabolism; (2) the RpoS-dependent acid-resistance system is induced, while the glutamate-dependent acid resistance system is not; (3) high pH up-regulates some virulence genes, while low pH down-regulates them, consistent with Shigella infection of the low gut; and (4) several cross-stress response genes are induced by pH changes. These results also illustrate that many unknown genes are significantly regulated under acid or basic conditions, providing researchers with important information to characterize their function. [source] Activity and energetics of free-swimming fish: insights from electromyogram telemetryFISH AND FISHERIES, Issue 1 2004Steven J Cooke Abstract Electromyogram (EMG) telemetry studies that involve remotely monitoring the locomotory activity and energetics of fish are contributing important information to the conservation and management of fisheries resources. Here, we outline the development of this rapidly evolving field and formulate the studies conducted that utilize this technology. To date, more than 60 studies have been conducted using EMG telemetry that spans 18 species. Several general trends were observed in the methodology of the studies that we have highlighted as standards that should be adopted associated with transmitter customization, electrode placement and surgical technique. Although numerous studies have been methodological, there are still some deficiencies in our basic understanding of issues such as the need for individual calibration and the method of reporting or transforming data. Increasingly, this technology is being applied to address issues in conservation, management and aquaculture production. At present, the technology has been most frequently applied to the study of animal activity or energetics and to migration. Several recent studies have also focused on addressing more basic questions in ecological and evolutionary biology (e.g. parental care dynamics) similar to the large body of literature that has been collected for other taxa (e.g. marine mammals, birds), using activity telemetry. Collectively, studies conducted using EMG telemetry have contributed important information on free-swimming fish that was previously difficult to obtain. EMG telemetry is particularly effective for examining behaviour at temporal and spatial scales that are difficult using other techniques. The development of an ultrasonic transmitter based on the same proven principles as those used in the current radio transmitter technology will permit studies in other environments (i.e. marine, brackish, deep water) and on different species of fish. We encourage the continued development and refinement of devices for monitoring the activity and energetics of free-swimming fish, and also encourage researchers to consider EMG telemetry as a tool for addressing questions that are not effectively answered with other techniques. [source] Vertical distribution and behaviour of shrimp Pandalus borealis larval stages in thermally stratified water columns: laboratory experiment and field observationsFISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 5 2006PATRICK OUELLET Abstract By combining field data and laboratory observations of larvae in a simulated thermal gradient, we described the ontogenetic changes in vertical distribution and behaviour of early stages of shrimp Pandalus borealis in thermally stratified water columns. Both in the laboratory and at stations in the north-western Gulf of St Lawrence, the first two larval stages appear to actively select and maintain a position in the upper layer of warmer temperatures, within the thermocline and above the cold (<1°C) intermediate layer. Stage III larvae were distributed deeper in the water column and in colder waters than the previous two stages. Stage IV and V larvae showed the highest degree of swimming activity in the laboratory and a much wider range (from surface to ,200 m) in vertical distribution in the field. The shift to deeper waters and settlement to the bottom habitat appears to happen after the fifth moult, at stage VI. We propose that the pattern of vertical distribution in the field reflects the adjustment of the different developmental stages to the distribution of preferred prey. The description of the ontogenetic change in the vertical distributions and movements of early stages of P. borealis should be valuable information for future attempts to model larval transport and dispersion, and for detecting settlement/recruitment areas using 3D ocean circulation models. The identification of the thermal habitat of the different larval stages and the timing for settlement at the bottom also provides important information for the development of temperature-dependent growth models up to the first juvenile stages. Contrary to the administration's claim that no one foresaw the difficulties of waging a war in Iraq, many concerns about the challenges the United States would face were raised inside and outside of government. Yet, none of this information had a significant effect on the decision-making process. This paper develops a decision-making model that integrates elements from the individual to the organizational level and explains how important information was marginalized, leading to a poor policy outcome. For inducible defences, cues from damaged prey and cues from predators both have the potential to provide important information, yet we know little about the relative importance of these separate sources of information for behavioural and morphological defences. We also do not know the point during a predation event at which kairomones are produced, i.e. whether they are produced constitutively, during prey attack or during prey digestion. 2.,We exposed leopard frog tadpoles (Rana pipiens) to nine predator cue treatments involving several combinations of cues from damaged conspecifics or heterospecifics, starved predators, predators only chewing prey, predators only digesting prey or predators chewing and digesting prey. 3.,We quantified two behavioural defences. Tadpole hiding behaviour was induced only by cues from crushed tadpoles. Reduced tadpole activity was induced only by cues from predators digesting tadpoles or predators chewing + digesting tadpoles. 4.,We also quantified tadpole mass and two size-adjusted morphological traits that are known to be phenotypically plastic. Mass was unaffected by the cue treatments. Relative body length was affected (i.e. there were differences among some treatments), but none of the treatments significantly differed from the no-predator control. Relative tail depth was affected by the treatments and deeper tails were induced only when tadpoles were exposed to cues from predators digesting tadpoles or cues from predators chewing + digesting tadpoles. 5.,These results demonstrate that some prey species can discriminate among a diverse set of potential cues from heterospecific prey, conspecific prey and predators. Moreover, the results illustrate that the cues responsible for the full suite of behavioural and morphological defences are not induced by tadpole crushing nor can they be induced by generalized digestive chemicals produced when predators digest their prey. Instead, both prey damage and predator digestion of conspecific tissues appear to be important for communicating predatory risk to phenotypically plastic anuran prey. Importantly, the production of chemical cues by predators may be unavoidable and prey have evolved the ability to eavesdrop on these signals. [source] Interpreting analyses of continuous covariates in affected sibling pair linkage studiesGENETIC EPIDEMIOLOGY, Issue 6 2007Silke Schmidt Abstract Datasets collected for linkage analyses of complex human diseases often include a number of clinical or environmental covariates. In this study, we evaluated the performance of three linkage analysis methods when the relationship between continuous covariates and disease risk or linkage heterogeneity was modeled in three different ways: (1) The covariate distribution is determined by a quantitative trait locus (QTL), which contributes indirectly to the disease risk; (2) the covariate is not genetically determined, but influences the disease risk through statistical interaction with a disease susceptibility locus; (3) the covariate distribution differs in families linked or unlinked to a particular disease susceptibility locus. We analyzed simulated datasets with a regression-based QTL analysis, a nonparametric analysis of the binary affection status, and the ordered subset analysis (OSA). We found that a significant OSA result may be due to a gene that influences variability in the population distribution of a continuous disease risk factor. Conversely, a regression-based QTL analysis may detect the presence of gene-environment (G × E) interaction in a sample of primarily affected individuals. The contribution of unaffected siblings and the size of baseline lod scores may help distinguish between QTL and G × E models. As illustrated by a linkage study of multiplex families with age-related macular degeneration, our findings assist in the interpretation of analysis results in real datasets. They suggest that the side-by-side evaluation of OSA and QTL results may provide important information about the relationship of measured covariates with either disease risk or linkage heterogeneity. [source] The geoarchaeological and paleoenvironmental context of Paleoindian sites in western Middle Park, Colorado, USAGEOARCHAEOLOGY: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL, Issue 2 2010James H. Mayer Geoarchaeological investigations in western Middle Park provide important information for understanding the soil-stratigraphic context of Paleoindian components, as well as the latest Quaternary environmental change and landscape evolution in a Southern Rocky Mountain intermontane basin. Paleoindian components are associated with the oldest two of four latest Quaternary stratigraphic units (1,4) recognized in co-alluvial mantles (combined slopewash and colluvium) in uplands and in alluvial valley fills. Limited data suggest accumulation of unit 1 as early as ,12,500 14C yr B.P. in alluvial valleys and by at least ,11,000 14C yr B.P. in uplands was followed by brief stability and soil formation. A relatively widespread disconformity marks earliest Holocene erosion and substantial removal of latest Pleistocene deposits in upland and alluvial settings followed by unit 2 deposition ,10,000,9000 14C yr B.P., perhaps signaling the abrupt onset of an intensified summer monsoon. In situ Paleoindian components in uplands are found in a moderately developed buried soil (the Kremmling soil) formed in units 1 and 2 in thin (,1m) hillslope co-alluvial mantles. The Kremmling soil reflects geomorphic stability in upland and alluvial settings ,9000,4500 14C yr BP, and represents a buried landscape with the potential to contain additional Paleoindian components, although elsewhere in western Middle Park Early Archaic components are documented in morphologically similar soils. Kremmling soil morphology, the relative abundance of charcoal in unit 2 relative to younger units, and charcoal morphology indicate the expansion of forest cover, including Pinus, and grass cover during the early and middle Holocene, suggesting conditions moister than present. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
