Terms modified by Hypothetical Selected AbstractsAn Examination of the Disparity Between Hypothetical and Actual Willingness to Pay Using the Contingent Valuation Method: The Case of Red Kite Conservation in the United KingdomCANADIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, Issue 2 2007Michael Christie This paper reports the findings of a field experiment that explores the criterion validity of the contingent valuation (CV) method. The empirical experiment examined the disparity between hypothetical and actual willingness to pay (WTP) bids for Red Kite conservation in Wales. Hypothetical WTP was elicited using an open-ended CV instrument, while the actual WTP value was determined from actual donations to the Welsh Kite Trust,a charity set up to aid the conservation of Red Kites in Wales. The survey results indicate that hypothetical WTP was three times greater than the mean value of actual donations; this finding is consistent with a number of other criterion validity experiments. However, we also demonstrate equality of hypothetical and actual WTP among those who actually express a payment amount. Further investigations identify that an underlying cause of this disparity stems from the respondents of the CV survey overstating their intention of pay. This observation has potentially significant implication for CV design in that it suggests that the emphasis in design should be placed much more fully on initially determining whether people would actually pay at all. [source] Local 3D real space atomic structure of the simple icosahedral Ho11Mg15Zn74 quasicrystal from PDF dataCRYSTAL RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 12 2003S. Brühne Abstract We present a new complementary strategy to quasicrystalline structure determination: The local atomic structure of simple icosahedral (si) Ho11Mg15Zn74 [a(6D) = 5.144(3)Å in a sphere of up to r = 17Å was refined using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) from in-house X-ray powder diffraction data (MoK,1, Qmax = 13.5Å,1; R = 20.4%). The basic building block is a 105-atom Bergman-Cluster {Ho8Mg12Zn85}. Its center is occupied by a Zn atom , in contrast to a void in face centred icosahedral (fci) Ho9Mg26Zn65. The center is then surrounded by another 12 Zn atoms, forming an icosahedron (1st shell). The 2nd shell is made up of 8 Ho atoms arranged on the vertices of a cube which in turn is completed to a pentagon dodecahedron by 12 Mg atoms, the dodecahedron then being capped by 12 Zn atoms. The 3rd shell is a distorted soccer ball of 60 Zn atoms, reflecting the higher Zn content of the si phase compared to the fci phase. In our model, 7% of all atoms are situated in between the clusters. The model corresponds to a hypothetical 1/1-approximant of the icosahedral (i) phase. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] The Efficacy of Curettage in Delineating Margins of Basal Cell Carcinoma Before Mohs Micrographic SurgeryDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 9 2003Désirée Ratner MD Background. Curettage may be helpful as a preliminary step to outline the gross subclinical extensions of high-risk basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) before the first stage of Mohs micrographic surgery. Although many Mohs surgeons use curettage in the Mohs surgical setting, no prospective studies have as yet been performed that demonstrate the efficacy of curettage in delineating tumor margins before Mohs surgery. Objective. To document the efficacy of curettage in delineating BCC margins before Mohs micrographic surgery. Methods. This was a prospective evaluation of 599 patients with biopsy-proven BCCs treated with Mohs surgery. The preoperative dimensions of each tumor, the curetted dimensions before the first surgical stage, the proposed excisional margins before each surgical stage, and the final defect dimensions after each surgical stage were measured. The maximum curetted margin around each tumor was calculated and compared with typical Mohs excisional margins of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm. A hypothetical 1-, 2-, 3-, or 4-mm excisional margin was added to the preoperative X and Y dimensions of each tumor, and the actual final defect sizes were compared with the hypothetical final defect sizes to determine whether an additional surgical stage would have been needed had curettage not been performed. The amount of tissue stretch occurring after specimen removal was calculated to determine whether tissue stretch falsely elevated the number of instances in which an additional surgical stage would have been needed had curettage not been performed. Results. The curetted margin around the observed extent of each tumor exceeded 1 mm in 87.6% of cases, 2 mm in 47.1% of cases, 3 mm in 19.7% of cases, and 4 mm in 5.7% of cases. The mean curetted margin was 1.7 mm. Taking a 1-mm margin in the first stage of Mohs surgery without first performing curettage would have necessitated an extra surgical stage in 99.2% of cases, whereas taking a 2-, 3-, or 4-mm margin would have necessitated an extra surgical stage in 93.0%, 88.1%, and 49.4% of cases, respectively. After calculating and eliminating the effects of tissue stretch, it was found that a 1-mm excisional margin taken in the first stage of Mohs surgery without first performing curettage would have necessitated an extra surgical stage in 99.0% of the cases. Taking a 2-, 3-, or 4-mm margin would have necessitated an extra surgical stage in 87.5%, 57.9%, and 29.5% of cases, respectively. Conclusion. Careful debulking and palpation with the curette significantly reduce the number of Mohs surgical stages required for BCC clearance. Even after taking the effects of tissue stretch into consideration, a significant proportion of tumors would still require an additional stage for tumor clearance without aggressive presurgical curettage. [source] Phylogenetic diversity and metagenomics of candidate division OP3ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 5 2010Jana Glöckner Summary Except for environmental 16S rRNA gene sequences, no information is available for members of the candidate division OP3. These bacteria appear to thrive in anoxic environments, such as marine sediments, hypersaline deep sea, freshwater lakes, aquifers, flooded paddy soils and methanogenic bioreactors. The 16S rRNA phylogeny suggests that OP3 belongs to the Planctomycetes/Verrucomicrobia/Chlamydiae (PVC) superphylum. Metagenomic fosmid libraries were constructed from flooded paddy soil and screened for 16S rRNA gene-containing fragments affiliated with the PVC superphylum. The screening of 63 000 clones resulted in 23 assay-positive fosmids, of which three clones were affiliated with OP3. The 16S rRNA gene sequence divergence between the fragments OP3/1, OP3/2 and OP3/3 ranges from 18% to 25%, indicating that they belong to different OP3 subdivisions. The 23S rRNA phylogeny confirmed the membership of OP3 in the PVC superphylum. Sequencing the OP3 fragments resulted in a total of 105 kb of genomic information and 90 ORFs, of which 47 could be assigned a putative function and 11 were conserved hypothetical. Using BLASTP searches, a high proportion of ORFs had best matches to homologues from Deltaproteobacteria, rather than to those of members of the PVC superphylum. On the fragment OP3/3, a cluster of nine ORFs was predicted to encode the bacterial NADH dehydrogenase I. Given the high proportion of homologues present in deltaproteobacteria and anoxic conditions in the natural environment of OP3 bacteria, the detection of NADH dehydrogenase I may suggest an anaerobic respiration mode. Oligonucleotide frequencies calculated for OP3/1, OP3/2 and OP/3 show high intraphylum correlations. This novel sequence information could therefore be used to identify OP3-related fragments in large metagenomic data sets using marker gene-independent procedures in the future. In addition to the OP3 fragments, a single metagenomic fragment affiliated with the candidate division BRC1 was obtained and analysed. Bhander Abstract As life-cycle-thinking becomes more integrated into waste management, quantitative tools are needed for assessing waste management systems and technologies. This article presents a decision support model to deal with integrated solid waste management planning problems at a regional or national level. The model is called EASEWASTE (environmental assessment of solid waste systems and technologies). The model consists of a number of modules (submodels), each describing a process in a real waste management system, and these modules may combine to represent a complete waste management system in a scenario. EASEWASTE generates data on emissions (inventory), which are translated and aggregated into different environmental impact categories, e.g. the global warming, acidification, and toxicity. To facilitate a "first level" screening evaluation, default values for process parameters have been provided, wherever possible. The EASEWASTE model for life-cycle-assessment of waste management is described and applied to a case study for illustrative purposes. The case study involving hypothetical but realistic data demonstrates the functionality, usability, and flexibilities of the model. The design and implementation of the software successfully address the substantial challenges in integrating process modeling, life-cycle inventory (LCI), and impact assessment (LCIA) modeling, and optimization into an interactive decision support platform. © 2008 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2008 [source] Structural and Theoretical Insights into Metal,Scorpionate Ligand ComplexesEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 10 2007Matthias Schwalbe Abstract The syntheses of the complexes [M(TmMe)(CO)2(NO)] (M = Mo, W) by reaction of NOBF4 with [M(TmMe)(CO)3], are reported and their spectroscopic characterisation and crystal structures are described. The analogous Cr complex could not be prepared by this methodology. The complexes adopt the expected pseudo-octahedral geometry. Complexes [M(L)(CO)2(NO)] (M = Cr, Mo, W; L = Cp, Tp and TmMe) together with the hypothetical [Mo(CO)2(NO)]+ cation were subjected to DFT calculations. Geometry-optimised structures closely parallel the crystallographic determinations and indicate that the complex [Cr(TmMe)(CO)2(NO)] is not inherently unstable. The DFT calculations allow the assignment of the C,O and N,O stretches in the IR spectrum and give insight into both the M,NO bonding and the metal to tripodal ligand bonding. The electron-donor strengths are confirmed to lie in the order TmMe > Tp > Cp. A side reaction of the B,H moiety of the TmMe anion with NO+ results in the isolation of the dimethylformamide adduct of (trismethimazolyl)borane, providing further evidence that the reaction pathways of the TmR ligands are more varied and less passive than in the chemistry of the nitrogen-based scorpionates.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2007) [source] Hybrid 2D and 3D Frameworks Based on ,-Keggin Polyoxometallates: Experiment and SimulationEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 15 2005Anne Dolbecq Abstract The ,-Keggin polyoxomolybdate {,-PMoV8MoVI4O40,x(OH)xM4} is a versatile building unit, with M being either a ZnII or a LaIII capping ion located at the vertices of a slightly distorted tetrahedron. The charge of the Keggin unit depends on the number of protonated oxo bridging ligands, which has been shown to vary from 0 to 5. The Keggin entity can thus be either an anion (M = Zn, x = 0) or a cation (M = La, x = 3,5). The Zn derivative has been generated in situ by hydrothermal synthesis and forms a 2D material built from the connection of the cations by 4,4'-bipyridine ligands linked to the capping ZnII ions. The reaction of the chloride salt of the La derivative with di-, tri- and tetrasubstituted benzenecarboxylate ligands has allowed us to isolate 2D and 3D materials. The 3D materials seem to be the first examples of hybrid open frameworks based on Keggin building blocks. The 3D framework built from the connection of ,-Keggin units by trimesate ions exhibits tunnels filled only by water molecules, which can be partly removed and reintroduced at room temperature. Besides these experimental results, simulation has allowed us to generate two virtual hybrid structures derived from those of known silicates by replacing the Si ions by hypothetical ,-Keggin cations and the O -bridging ligands by terephthalate ions, thus showing that 3D frameworks with large pores can be envisioned in the chemistry of hybrid organic,inorganic materials based on ,-Keggin units and motivating further experimental investigations. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005) [source] A NOVEL PREFERENCE FOR AN INVASIVE PLANT AS A MECHANISM FOR ANIMAL HYBRID SPECIATIONEVOLUTION, Issue 2 2007Dietmar Schwarz Homoploid hybrid speciation,speciation via hybridization without a change in chromosome number,is rarely documented and poorly understood in animals. In particular, the mechanisms by which animal homoploid hybrid species become ecologically and reproductively isolated from their parents are hypothetical and remain largely untested by experiments. For the many host-specific parasites that mate on their host, choosing the right host is the most important ecological and reproductive barrier between these species. One example of a host-specific parasite is the Lonicera fly, a population of tephritid fruit flies that evolved within the last 250 years likely by hybridization between two native Rhagoletis species following a host shift to invasive honeysuckle. We studied the host preference of the Lonicera fly and its putative parent species in laboratory experiments. The Lonicera fly prefers its new host, introduced honeysuckle, over the hosts of both parental species, demonstrating the rapid acquisition of preference for a new host as a means of behavioral isolation from the parent species. The parent taxa discriminate against each other's native hosts, but both accept honeysuckle fruit, leaving the potential for asymmetric gene flow from the parent species. Importantly, this pattern allows us to formulate hypotheses about the initial formation of the Lonicera fly. As mating partners from the two parent taxa are more likely to meet on invasive honeysuckle than on their respective native hosts, independent acceptance of honeysuckle by both parents likely preceded hybridization. We propose that invasive honeysuckle served as a catalyst for the local breakdown of reproductive isolation between the native parent species, a novel consequence of the introduction of an exotic weed. We describe behavioral mechanisms that explain the initial hybridization and subsequent reproductive isolation of the hybrid Lonicera fly. These results provide experimental support for a combination of host shift and hybridization as a model for hybrid speciation in parasitic animals. [source] Reannotation of hypothetical ORFs in plant pathogen Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica SCRI1043FEBS JOURNAL, Issue 1 2008Ling-Ling Chen Over-annotation of hypothetical ORFs is a common phenomenon in bacterial genomes, which necessitates confirming the coding reliability of hypothetical ORFs and then predicting their functions. The important plant pathogen Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica SCRI1043 (Eca1043) is a typical case because more than a quarter of its annotated ORFs are hypothetical. Our analysis focuses on annotation of Eca1043 hypothetical ORFs, and comprises two efforts: (a) based on the Z-curve method, 49 originally annotated hypothetical ORFs are recognized as noncoding, this is further supported by principal components analysis and other evidence; and (b) using sequence-alignment tools and some functional resources, more than a half of the hypothetical genes were assigned functions. The potential functions of 427 hypothetical genes are summarized according to the cluster of orthologous groups functional category. Moreover, 114 and 86 hypothetical genes are recognized as putative ,membrane proteins' and ,exported proteins', respectively. Reannotation of Eca1043 hypothetical ORFs will benefit research into the lifestyle, metabolism and pathogenicity of the important plant pathogen. Also, our study proffers a model for the reannotation of hypothetical ORFs in microbial genomes. [source] Identification of protein-coding genes in the genome of Vibrio cholerae with more than 98% accuracy using occurrence frequencies of single nucleotidesFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 15 2001Ju Wang The published sequence of the Vibrio cholerae genome indicates that, in addition to the genes that encode proteins of known and unknown function, there are 1577 ORFs identified as conserved hypothetical or hypothetical gene candidates. Because the annotation is not 100% accurate, it is not known which of the 1577 ORFs are true protein-coding genes. In this paper, an algorithm based on the Z curve method, with sensitivity, specificity and accuracy greater than 98%, is used to solve this problem. Twenty-fold cross-validation tests show that the accuracy of the algorithm is 98.8%. A detailed discussion of the mechanism of the algorithm is also presented. It was found that 172 of the 1577 ORFs are unlikely to be protein-coding genes. The number of protein-coding genes in the V. cholerae genome was re-estimated and found to be ,,3716. This result should be of use in microarray analysis of gene expression in the genome, because the cost of preparing chips may be somewhat decreased. A computer program was written to calculate a coding score called VCZ for gene identification in the genome. Coding/noncoding is simply determined by VCZ > 0/VCZ < 0. The program is freely available on request for academic use. [source] Predicting the population consequences of human disturbance for Ringed Plovers Charadrius hiaticula: a game theory approachIBIS, Issue 2007DURWYN LILEY Human disturbance and its potential impacts upon bird populations are currently topical and contentious issues for conservationists. Although many studies have revealed a behavioural impact, or even direct effect on breeding success or survival, these cannot usually be extended to predict the impact on population size. Here we present a population model that allows predictions of the effect that changes in human numbers, visiting a 9-km-long section of the coastline, may have upon the size of a Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula population. Human disturbance affects Ringed Plovers in our study area through birds avoiding areas of high disturbance and, in addition, through the accidental trampling of a small number of nests by people walking on the beach. Using the level of human disturbance and habitat variables (which define territory quality) it is possible to predict which areas of beach are occupied and therefore the sites available to the population. Breeding success, for a given area of beach, can be predicted from habitat data. Incorporating known, density-independent, adult mortality allows the equilibrium population size to be predicted. This provides a model that predicts population size. This model is then used to predict the population that the site would support with different, hypothetical, levels of disturbance. If nest loss from human activity was prevented, for example by fencing nests, we predict the Plover population size would increase by 8%. A complete absence of human disturbance would cause a population increase of 85%. If the numbers of people were to double, we predict the population would decrease by 23%. [source] Theoretical study in [C2H4,Tl]+ and [C2H2,Tl]+ complexesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF QUANTUM CHEMISTRY, Issue 1 2007Fernando Mendizabal Abstract We studied the attraction between [C2Hn] and Tl(I) in the hypothetical [C2Hn,Tl]+ complexes (n = 2,4) using ab initio methodology. We found that the changes around the equilibrium distance C,Tl and in the interaction energies are sensitive to the electron correlation potential. We evaluated these effects using several levels of theory, including Hartree,Fock (HF), second-order Møller,Plesset (MP2), MP4, coupled cluster singles and doubles CCSD(T), and local density approximation augmented by nonlocal corrections for exchange and correlation due to Becke and Perdew (LDA/BP). The obtained interaction energies differences at the equilibrium distance Re (C,Tl) range from 33 and 46 kJ/mol at the different levels used. These results indicate that the interaction between olefinic systems and Tl(I) are a real minimum on the potential energy surfaces (PES). We can predict that these new complexes are viable for synthesizing. At long distances, the behavior of the [C2Hn],Tl+ interaction may be related mainly to charge-induced dipole and dispersion terms, both involving the individual properties of the olefinic ,-system and thallium ion. Int J Quantum Chem, 2007 [source] Escaping homelessness: anticipated and perceived facilitators,JOURNAL OF COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 7 2009Allisha Patterson One study with two distinct sections was conducted to identify factors facilitating escape from homelessness. In Section 1, 58 homeless individuals rated possible facilitators of escape (factors they believed would help them become more independent and self-sufficient). In Section 2, 80 participants who had already exited homelessness rated the same facilitators (factors that would have helped them become more independent and self-sufficient) and the importance of actual factors that facilitated escape. When rating factors in the hypothetical, both groups rated obtaining housing as being particularly important for facilitating movement toward independence. People formerly homeless who reported perceived facilitators of escape, however, also reported that their escape was facilitated by realization of their own abilities and potential to offer something to the world. [source] Bodensystematik und Bodenklassifikation Teil I: GrundbegriffeJOURNAL OF PLANT NUTRITION AND SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2005Christoph Albrecht Abstract Bodenordnungssysteme lassen sich meist nach zwei Prinzipien entwickeln: Entweder werden nur rein bodenkundliche Informationen als kategorisierendes Merkmal verwendet (pedogenetische Faktoren/Prozesse), oder die Kategorienbildung erfolgt problemorientiert anhand ausgewählter Parameter. Die meisten der weltweit verwendeten Bodenordnungssysteme lassen sich nach ihrer Grundausrichtung einem der beiden Typen zuordnen. Diese Betrachtungsweise ist nicht neu und wird in der Literatur mit unterschiedlichen Begriffen und Begriffsinhalten dargestellt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die verschiedenen Definitionen von Systematik, Klassifikation, Taxonomie und Identifizierung zusammengefasst und geordnet. Dabei fällt auf, dass Begriffe mit sehr unterschiedlichen Inhalten oft synonym verwendet werden. Grundgedanke unserer Überlegungen ist die Trennung von Systematik, Klassifikation und Identifizierung. Systematik ist die grundsätzliche wissenschaftlich-deduktive Gliederung von Objekten in systematische Einheiten. Dabei soll das gesamte Wissen eines Fachgebietes in eine überschaubare Form gebracht werden, im Mittelpunkt stehen sowohl die umfassende Beschreibung einzelner Objekte als auch die Beziehungen zwischen den Objekten. Im Gegensatz dazu ist eine Klassifikation die zielorientiert-induktive Gliederung von Objekten. Die entstehenden Klassen werden nur anhand ausgewählter Parameter abgegrenzt, womit ein schneller Überblick bei speziellen Fragestellungen ermöglicht wird. Die Identifizierung ist die Einordnung von neuen Objekten in eine bestehende Systematik oder Klassifikation. Eine zweifelsfreie Identifizierung erfordert die Messbarkeit der kategorisierenden Merkmale. Bei einer genetisch angelegten Bodensystematik sind die Merkmale die Boden bildenden Prozesse und Faktoren. Da sie beim gegenwärtigen Kenntnisstand oft nicht messbar sind, bleiben Versuche, einen Boden in eine Systematik einzuordnen, häufig hypothetisch und dadurch subjektiv. Die Ergebnisse einer Bodensystematisierung sind daher oft anfechtbar, weil sie nicht durch Messwerte verifiziert werden können. Im Gegensatz dazu erlauben Bodenklassifikationen objektive Profilansprachen. Da jedoch die Festlegung der Grenzwerte eher pragmatisch nach Zweckmäßigkeit geschieht und nicht wissenschaftlich anhand von Prozessintensitäten, ist die Verwendung als grundlegendes Ordnungssystem eines Wissenschaftsgebietes nicht möglich. Die Bodenkunde benötigt beide Arten von Ordnungssystemen, um wissenschaftliche und praktische Ansprüche gleichermaßen erfüllen zu können, jedoch erfordern die Vollendung und Verifizierung der Systematik umfangreiche Forschungsarbeiten. Soil systematics and classification systems Part I: Fundamentals Soil-ordering systems are primarily based and developed on one of two underlying principles: They are either categorized according to soil-forming processes, or the formation of categories develops by chosen parameters. This perspective has already been established in the literature, though it is often confusing as many terms are defined and applied differently. In this contribution, the various definitions of systematics, classification, taxonomy, and identification will be clearly differentiated and summarized. The core of our work is to clearly define and contrast three terms: systematics, classification, and identification. Systematics is the fundamental scientific and deductive ordering of objects into systematic units. The purpose of this approach is to organize the entire spectrum of knowledge within a discipline into a transparent and manageable form. Classification, in direct contrast to systematics, is goal-oriented and an inductive ordering of objects. Thus, the ordering scheme consists of classes which are clearly parameterized. Identification is the ordering of new objects into an already existing systematics or classification system. Close attention is paid to both the differences and the similarities between a systematics and a classification system, especially pertaining to their practical applications. The identification requires that the category-forming characteristics can be measured (e.g., for soil systematics, these are the soil-forming processes and factors). Currently, it is unfortunately not feasible to objectively quantify most soil-forming processes. Thus, most attempts at categorizing soils by systematics are hypothetical and highly subjective in nature. The resulting identification derived from the soil systematics approach is open to questions and contestable, since a graded measuring system does not yet exist to verify these determinations. In contrast, a soil-classification system does allow an objective soil-profile identification, although such systems are conceived pragmatically and designed for a practical purpose (e.g., not scientifically based on process intensities). Unfortunately, such a classification system cannot be applied as a universal scientific categorization system due to this method of conception. Both categorization approaches are required in soil science in order to satisfy both the practical and the scientific aspects of the field. However, substantial research must be done to complete and verify systematics. The only viable short-term solution is through the development of a graded classification system where the categories of the system are directly derived from the current systematics approach. In the long run both the exact investigation and the detailed modeling of the soil-forming processes are inevitable. McDonald Abstract Social and cognitive characteristics of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) place them at risk for inappropriate inclusion in or exclusion from research participation. As we grapple with how to include adults with ID in research in order to secure their right to contribute to scientific advancements and be positioned to derive benefit from ensuing knowledge, it is critical to consider scientific gatekeepers' perspectives on risks of and protections for including adults with ID in research. We surveyed 199 Institutional Review Board members and intellectual disability researchers in the United States to identify their perceptions of specific risks and necessary protections in (hypothetical) research studies. The research studies varied as to whether they included adults with ID in the research sample and the level of harm to which research participants were exposed. Results suggest that identification of psychological, social, and legal risks and necessary protections varied by the disability status of the sample, the level of risk, and the role of the person reviewing the study. For example, participants identified more psychological, information control, legal, and social risks in higher harm research studies. Participants reported a need for more protections in high-harm studies as well as studies that included adults with ID. In some instances the nature of identified risks and protections and respondents' characterization of these risks and necessary protections suggested concerns related specifically to adults with ID. Implications for practice, policy, and future research related to access to research participation are discussed. Standard molar enthalpies of formation are derived. The estimated heats of transition between hypothetical and stable structures, lithium niobate and perovskite for NaNbO3 and vice versa for LiNbO3 are ,6 kJ/mol and ,10 kJ/mol, respectively. X-ray diffraction studies at room temperature showed for 0 ,x, 0.14 there are three phases based on different ordering of the perovskite type lattice: orthorhombic with a quadrupled reduced perovskite cell at 0 ,x, 0.02, orthorhombic with a doubled reduced perovskite cell at 0.015 ,x, 0.14, and rhombohedral at 0.08 ,x, 0.13. There are two two-phase (morphotropic) regions with coexistence of the two orthorhombic phases at 0.015 ,x, 0.02 and with the second orthorhombic phase coexisting with the rhombohedral phase at 0.08 ,x, 0.13. A reproducible anomaly in specific heat at ,600 K, not reported previously, has been observed in pure NaNbO3. Heat-capacity measurements confirm a phase transition at 553 K for 0.07 ,x, 0.09. With increasing lithium concentration, a gradual disappearance of high-temperature phase transitions associated with tilting of oxygen octahedra has been observed. HARKINS Clenbuterol, a ,2 agonist/antagonist, is the only bronchodilator approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in horses. The Association of Racing Commissioners International classifies clenbuterol as a class 3 agent, and, as such, its identification in post-race samples may lead to sanctions. Anecdotal reports suggest that clenbuterol may have been administered by intratracheal (IT) injection to obtain beneficial effects and avoid post-race detection. The objectives of this study were (1) to measure the pharmacological efficacy of IT dose of clenbuterol and (2) to determine the analytical findings in urine in the presence and absence of furosemide. When administered intratracheally (90,,g/horse) to horses suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), clenbuterol had effects that were not significantly different from those of saline. In parallel experiments using a behavior chamber, no significant effects of IT clenbuterol on heart rate or spontaneous locomotor activity were observed. Clenbuterol concentrations in the urine were also measured after IT dose in the presence and absence of furosemide. Four horses were administered i.v. furosemide (5,mg/kg), and four horses were administered saline (5,mL). Two hours later, all horses were administrated clenbuterol (IT, 90,,g), and the furosemide-treated horses received a second dose of furosemide (2.5 mg/kg, i.v.). Three hours after clenbuterol dose (1,h after hypothetical ,post-time'), the mean specific gravity of urine samples from furosemide-treated horses was 1.024, well above the 1.010 concentration at which furosemide is considered to interfere with drug detection. There was no interference by furosemide with ,enhanced' ELISA screening of clenbuterol equivalents in extracted and concentrated samples. Similarly, furosemide had no effect on mass spectral identification or quantification of clenbuterol in these samples. These results suggest that the IT dose of clenbuterol (90,,g) is, in pharmacological terms, indistinguishable from the dose of saline, and that, using extracted samples, clenbuterol dose is readily detectable at 3,h after dosing. Furthermore, concomitant dose of furosemide does not interfere with detection or confirmation of clenbuterol. Catanzaro ABSTRACT Papers published in recent years have contributed to resolve the enigma of the hypothetical Be nature of the hot pulsating star , Cephei. This star shows variable emission in the H, line, typical for Be stars, but its projected rotational velocity is very much lower than the critical limit, contrary to what is expected for a typical Be star. The emission has been attributed to the secondary component of the , Cephei spectroscopic binary system. In this paper, using both our and archived spectra, we attempt to recover the H, profile of the secondary component and to analyse its behaviour with time for a long period. To accomplish this task, we first derive the atmospheric parameters of the primary, Teff= 24 000 ± 250 K and log g= 3.91 ± 0.10, and then we use these values to compute its synthetic H, profile, and finally we reconstruct the secondary's profile disentangling the observed one. The secondary's H, profile shows the typical two-peak emission of a Be star with a strong variability. We also analysed the behaviour versus time of some linewidth parameters: equivalent width, ratio of blue to red peak intensities, full width at half-maximum, peak separation and radial velocity of the central depression. The projected rotational velocity (v sin i) of the secondary and the dimension of the equatorial surrounding disc have also been estimated. Cognitive theories of decision-making still dominate professionals' understanding of patient decision-making about how to use genetic information and whether to have testing. I discovered a conceptual model of decision-making while carrying out a phenomenological-hermeneutic descriptive study of a convenience sample of 12 couples who were interviewed while deciding whether to undergo prenatal genetic testing. Thirty-two interviews were conducted with 12 men and 12 women separately. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and all data were analyzed using three levels of coding that were sorted into 30 categories and then abstracted into three emergent meta-themes that described men's and women's attempts to make sense and find meaning in how to best use prenatal genetic technology. Their descriptions of how they thought about, communicated, and coped with their decision were so detailed it was possible to discern nine different types of thinking they engaged in while deciding to accept or decline testing. They believed that decision-making is a process of working through your own personal style of thinking. KLUWER This research addresses couples'reports of their (hypothetical) attempts to maintain or change a gendered division of labor through conflict interactions. Two experiments in which spouses responded to scenarios showed that spouses reported more conflict over the division of housework than conflict over paid work and child care, and that wives more often than husbands desired a change in their spouses'contribution. Spouses reported more wife-demand/husband-withdraw than husband-demand/wife-withdraw interaction during hypothetical conflict over the division of labor, but only when the wife desired a change in her spouse's contribution. Together, the data imply that wife-demand/husband-withdraw interaction is a likely response to the asymmetrically structured conflict situation in which the wife is discontent with her husband's contribution to housework, while her husband wants to maintain the status quo. We further showed that defenders of the status quo were more likely expected to reach their goal than complainants. In the role of complainant, wives were more likely expected to reach their goal than were their husbands, but only when the conflict issue concerned their own gender stereotypical domain (i.e., family work). [source] Electronic structure of TbBa2Cu3O7PHYSICA STATUS SOLIDI (B) BASIC SOLID STATE PHYSICS, Issue 1 2010Maciej, uszczek Abstract The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method was used for spin-polarized electronic structure calculations of stoichiometric TbBa2Cu3O7 (Tb123), not synthesized as a single phase yet. The generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard correction (GGA,+,U) was employed for Tb4f electrons to prevented fractional occupation of states at Fermi level and hybridization with other electrons. The determined band structure is Y123-like with the metallic character as in the other superconducting R123 (R,=,rare earth). The presented results indicate that strong on-site spin moment of Tb could not effectively influence the neighbours and the induced magnetic interactions in the system are weak (CuO planes) or negligible (BaO planes and CuO chains). This appears to be the repercussion of the ,size effect' due to relatively small Tb+3 ionic radius. The predicted weak influence of magnetic moments of Tb on CuO states in the assumed (hypothetical) Fermi liquid phase of TbBa2Cu3O7 could favour the rise of superconductivity in this system. ZOTZ ABSTRACT Two distinct morphological forms characterize the ontogeny of many epiphytic bromeliads. Smaller plants exhibit an atmospheric habit, while larger plants form water-impounding tanks. The study of the functional significance of heteroblasty in epiphytes is severely hampered by considerable size-related variation in morphological, anatomical and physiological parameters. To overcome this problem, plants of varying size of both atmospheric and tank form were included in the present study with Vriesea sanguinolenta. The results show that virtually all morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics vary during ontogeny, but changes were rarely directly related to the step change in gross morphology. Changes were either: (1) gradual from smallest atmospheric to small tank (e.g. leaf divergence angles, reduction in photosystem II efficiency during drought, speed of recovery after drought); (2) there was no change between atmospheric and small tank, but a gradual or step change within the tank form (stomatal density, relationship of leaf N and specific leaf area); or (3) developmental patterns were more complicated with decreases and increases during ontogeny (photosynthetic capacity, carbon isotope ratios, abscisic acid levels during drought). Although the comparisons between ontogenetic phases were always confounded by size differences, a hypothetical small tank plant is expected to suffer higher water loss than a real atmospheric, whereas a hypothetical, large atmospheric plant would show reduced access to resources, such as nutrients, in comparison with the real tank. The present results are consistent with the notion of heteroblasty as an adaptation of early ontogenetic stages to drought, but highlight that size-related variation greatly modifies any difference directly associated with the step change from atmospheric to tank. Gao Abstract A model of stomatal conductance was developed to relate plant transpiration rate to photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), vapour pressure deficit and soil water potential. Parameters of the model include sensitivity of osmotic potential of guard cells to photosynthetic active radiation, elastic modulus of guard cell structure, soil-to-leaf conductance and osmotic potential of guard cells at zero PAR. The model was applied to field observations on three functional types that include 11 species in subtropical southern China. Non-linear statistical regression was used to obtain parameters of the model. The result indicated that the model was capable of predicting stomatal conductance of all the 11 species and three functional types under wide ranges of environmental conditions. Major conclusions included that coniferous trees and shrubs were more tolerant for and resistant to soil water stress than broad-leaf trees due to their lower osmotic potential, lignified guard cell walls, and sunken and suspended guard cell structure under subsidiary epidermal cells. Mid-day depression in transpiration and photosynthesis of pines may be explained by decreased stomatal conductance under a large vapour pressure deficit. Stomatal conductance of pine trees was more strongly affected by vapour pressure deficit than that of other species because of their small soil-to-leaf conductance, which is explainable in terms of xylem tracheids in conifer trees. Tracheids transport water by means of small pit-pairs in their side walls, and are much less efficient than the end-perforated vessel members in broad-leaf xylem systems. These conclusions remain hypothetical until direct measurements of these parameters are available. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. A comparison of proteomic profiles before and during balhimycin production characterized differentially and constitutively expressed protein isoforms, which were associated with 203 ORFs in the A. balhimycina genome. These data, providing insights on the major metabolic pathways/molecular processes operating in this organism, were used to compile 2-DE reference maps covering 3,10, 4,7 and 4.5,5.5 pH gradients available over the World Wide Web as interactive web pages (http://www.unipa.it/ampuglia/Abal-proteome-maps). Functional clustering analysis revealed that differentially expressed proteins belong to functional groups involved in central carbon metabolism, amino acid metabolism and protein biosynthesis, energetic and redox balance, sugar/amino sugar metabolism, balhimycin biosynthesis and transcriptional regulation or with hypothetical and/or unknown function. Interestingly, proteins involved in the biosynthesis of balhimycin precursors, such as amino acids, amino sugars and central carbon metabolism intermediates, were upregulated during antibiotic production. qRT-PCR analysis revealed that 8 out of 14 upregulated genes showed a positive correlation between changes at translational and transcriptional expression level. Furthermore, proteomic analysis of two nonproducing mutants, restricted to a sub-set of differentially expressed proteins, showed that most proteins required for the biosynthesis of balhimycin precursors are downregulated in both mutants. These findings suggest that primary metabolic pathways support anabolic routes leading to balhimycin biosynthesis and the differentially expressed genes are interesting targets for the construction of high-yielding producer strains by rational genetic engineering. To date, however, the proteins that routinely populate this biofluid are largely unknown, in part due to the technical difficulties in processing such mucin-rich samples. To provide a catalogue of sputum proteins, we have surveyed the proteome of human-induced sputum (sputome). A combination of 2-D gel analysis and GeLC-MS/MS allowed a total of 191 human proteins to be confidently assigned. In addition to the expected components, several hitherto unreported proteins were found to be present, including three members of the annexin family, kallikreins 1 and 11, and peroxiredoxins 1, 2 and 5. Other sets of proteins identified included four proteins previously annotated as hypothetical or conserved hypothetical. Taken together, these data represent the first extensive survey of the proteome of induced sputum and provide a platform for future identification of biomarkers of lung disease. To validate the existence of hitherto hypothetical proteins predicted from recent chlamydial genome sequencing projects and to examine the patterns of expression of key components at the protein level, we have surveyed the expressed proteome of Chlamydia trachomatis strain,L2. A combination of two-dimensional gel analysis, multi-dimensional protein identification (MudPIT) and nanocapillary liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry allowed a total of 328,chlamydial proteins to be unambiguously assigned. Proteins identified as being expressed in the metabolically inert form, elementary body, of Chlamydia include the entire set of predicted glycolytic enzymes, indicating that metabolite flux rather than de novo synthesis of this pathway is triggered upon infection of host cells. An enzyme central to cell wall biosynthesis was also detected in the intracellular form, reticulate body, of Chlamydia, suggesting that the peptidoglycan is produced during growth within host cells. Other sets of proteins identified include 17 outer membrane-associated proteins of potential significance in vaccine studies and 67,proteins previously annotated as hypothetical or conserved hypothetical. Taken together, ,35% of the predicted proteome for C.,trachomatis has been experimentally verified, representing the most extensive survey of any chlamydial proteome to date. [source] Food vacuole proteome of the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparumPROTEOMICS - CLINICAL APPLICATIONS, Issue 9 2008Mauld Lamarque Abstract The Plasmodium falciparum food vacuole (FV) is a lysosome-like organelle where erythrocyte hemoglobin digestion occurs. It is a favorite target in the development of antimalarials. We have used a tandem mass spectrometry approach to investigate the proteome of an FV-enriched fraction and identified 116 proteins. The electron microscopy analysis and the Western blot data showed that the major component of the fraction was the FV and, as expected, the majority of previously known FV markers were recovered. Of particular interest, several proteins involved in vesicle-mediated trafficking were identified, which are likely to play a key role in FV biogenesis and/or FV protein trafficking. Recovery of parasite surface proteins lends support to the cytostomal pathway of hemoglobin ingestion as a FV trafficking route. We have identified 32 proteins described as hypothetical in the databases. This insight into FV protein content provides new clues towards understanding the biological function of this organelle in P. falciparum. Soares (1994) demonstrated that masked presentation of phobic pictures produces increased skin conductance responses (SCRs) in phobic subjects. A. Öhman (1993) explained this phenomenon in terms of a hypothetical "feature detector" that identifies physical characteristics of stimuli and activates the arousal system without involving significance evaluation or consciousness. By exposing spider phobics to spider words, general threat words, and neutral words instead of pictures, this explanation was tested. Words were presented both masked and unmasked while electrodermal activity was measured. Under unmasked conditions, SCRs were largest for spider words followed by general threat words, then neutral words. When masked, the difference between spider words and general threat words disappeared but SCRs remained significantly smaller for neutral words. It is concluded that activation of the arousal system by masked threat cues does not necessarily depend on their perceptual characteristics. [source] |
