Quintero The interspecific hybridization of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, females with blue catfish, I. furcatus, males has been identified as a method to further improve production; however, lack of spawning success has affected its commercial application. To facilitate our understanding of the interaction of brood stock nutrition and reproductive performance, we evaluated the interaction of feed quality and feeding frequency. Channel catfish females were classified into two genetic groups, namely, high and low spawning. The treatments were offered during the spring season 70,90 d prior to the start of the spawning season. Induced reproduction was performed using luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analog. Condition of the fish as well as reproductive performance using spawning success, egg production, egg size, and fertilization at 48 h were determined. Changing protein level of the diet from 32 to 42% did not influence spawning, fecundity, or fertilization, but affected egg size and biochemical composition of the eggs. Increasing the feeding frequency from three to six times per week negatively affected spawning in one of the two genetics groups, did not affect egg production and egg fertilization, but had a significant effect on egg size. Older fish performed better than younger fish in terms of spawning success and egg production. DURLAND Abstract Hybrid catfish (channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus × blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus) display characteristics that are favourable to aquaculture production. Low hatch percentages are a principal reason this hybrid is not used widely in the catfish industry. This study was conducted to determine whether additional food source rich in lipids may lead to a higher quality egg production. A 10-week feed trial was conducted in ponds in Auburn, AL. A total of 219 female Kansas Select channel catfish were stocked into nine ponds, 0.04 ha in size. Three dietary treatments were randomly allocated to the ponds. Diet-1 was a standard 60 g kg,1 lipid floating catfish feed. Diet-2 was the same feed supplemented with forage fish at ,28 kg ha,1. The third diet was the aforementioned catfish feed topcoated with 20 g kg,1 lipid [10 g kg,1 menhaden fish oil, 5 g kg,1 high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) oil and 5 g kg,1 high arachidonic acid oil]. Results indicate that brood fish fed the high lipid diet spawned larger egg masses and had larger eggs both in weight and in diameter, with increased complements of fatty acids such as DHA, eicosapentaenoic acid and total n-3 fatty acids. The neutral and polar lipid fractions are also presented. [source] PROTEINASES IN HYBRID CATFISH VISCERA: CHARACTERIZATION AND EFFECT OF EXTRACTION MEDIAJOURNAL OF FOOD BIOCHEMISTRY, Issue 4 2010SAPPASITH KLOMKLAO ABSTRACT Proteolytic activity from viscera extract of hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus × Clarias gariepinus) was investigated. Optimal pH and temperature for casein hydrolysis were 9.0 and 50C, respectively. The enzyme was stable to heat treatment up to 40C and over a pH range of 7,11 for 30,120 min. The proteolytic activity was effectively inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor, benzamidine, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and N -p-tosyl-L-lysine chloromethyl ketone. Activities of the viscera extract continuously decreased as NaCl concentration increased, while activities increased as CaCl2 concentration increased. Based on the proteinase activity of zones separated by electrophoresis, the molecular mass of the major proteinases in hybrid catfish viscera was 23 and 20 kDa. The effect of extraction media on recovery of proteinases was also studied. Extraction of the viscera powder with 50 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.0 containing 0.5 M NaCl and 0.2% (v/v) Brij 35 rendered a higher recovery of proteinase activity than other extractants tested (P < 0.05). The results suggested that major proteinases in hybrid catfish viscera were heat-activated alkaline proteinases, most likely trypsin-like serine proteinases. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Hybrid catfish viscera is an abundant and underutilized resource that can be used as a unique proteinase source. Proteinase from various sources catalyzes the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Thus, it is expected that like other proteinases, hybrid catfish proteinase would be useful in biomedical, food and beverage application. Moreover, the presented extraction media could be adopted to recover the trypsin-like serine proteinase from hybrid catfish viscera, which is currently a solid waste of Pa-duk-ra industry. [source] Comparative growth and yield of channel catfish and channel × blue hybrid catfish fed a full or restricted rationAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 9 2010Bartholomew W Green Abstract Growth and yield (kg ha,1) of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque, 1818) and the channel × blue hybrid catfish [I. punctatus female ×I. furcatus (Lesueur, 1840) male], which shared the Jubilee strain of channel catfish as the maternal parent, were compared in sixteen 0.1 ha earthen ponds (14 852 fish ha,1) during the April to November growing season. Each fish genetic group was fed a commercially formulated 32% protein feed daily to apparent satiation or at 80% of the mean daily satiation ration. Net yield and individual weight were higher for channel × blue hybrid catfish compared with channel catfish and for fish fed a full ration compared with a restricted ration. When fed a full ration, the channel × blue hybrid catfish grew faster from May to September than did the purebred channel catfish because the hybrid catfish consumed a greater percentage of its body weight at each feeding. Net yield within each fish genetic group was lower when feed ration was restricted. The per cent reduction in net yield in response to feed restriction was similar for each fish genetic group.
